━。゜✿ jily fic recommendations ✿ ゜。━
Really, we shouldn’t be surprised by now but I have more amazing jily AU fics to share because the writers of this fandom are incredibly talented and I have my screen report to prove it.
For reference, anything in italics is taken from the summaries on ao3.
serendipity by desperateforsanity (on ao3)
Modern college/uni AU. Dearest Students and Staff, I am pleased to announce Hogwarts University’s fourth annual Pen Pal Program. Upperclassmen and sophomores likely remember and cherish the memories of their previous penpals and are excited to make another friend this year.
TW: for the later chapters for discussions of grief and its effects on one's mental well-being. For the most part, though this is a fun fic full of great banter!
The Frenzied Misadventures of Balcony Man and Window Woman by @clare-with-no-i
prompt: "It's 3am why are you outside my window- are you trying to rob me?"
It feels necessary to preface this entire thing with the fact that, yes, James had good reason to be dangling precariously from a third-floor balcony, and anyone who says differently is simply attempting to smear his good name.
At least, that’s the story he’s sticking to.
Hijinks & Shenanigans

Earl's Court. 24th May, 1975. Led Zeppelin live in concert like you've never seen them before.
FEATURING: prolonged eye contact, deeply metaphoric descriptions of cigarette smoke, painful levels of detail about makeup, and a special one-time performance by Two Teens In Love! OR: the "we made eye contact at a Led Zeppelin concert but my friends pulled me away to mosh before I could come say hello" AU
So when I say that I saw this unfold frame by frame in my head, I mean the writing is on another level. The way that I could almost smell Earl Court ... I regret waiting so long to read it. Also, found out this is written by the same author as one of my favourite jily fics foreigner’s god so that explains it “I'm not a religious person but I do sometimes think God made you for me.” ― Sally Rooney, Normal People

Historical AU. A decade after they met as cadets for The Times, the toll of James chasing stories in war zones is starting to hit home for Lily.

Modern AU. James stops momentarily to give way to a bunch of rambunctious teenagers on the pavement before he regains his step. Lily has come to a halt a bit further, waiting on him.
“Horoscopes?” he asks as they move onwards. He’s relieved that any awkwardness between them is apparently gone. “How so?”
“Marly sent me mine this week because it said I would meet someone from the past again,” she explains. “I’m still not sold on the idea of it, but isn’t this weird?”

Single-mum-lily AU. One day at a time is the mantra Lily uses to keep peace inside her mind, but there are days when it's simply impossible and in the end all she needs is a glass of wine, a cozy hug with her boyfriend, and a serious talk with her son.
Note that you can read this as a stand-alone one shot but it's part of a series that takes place in this AU

Chat fic where a group chat documents the lives of four highly dramatic teenage boys as they navigate their A Levels.
Or, like, die trying.
Okay, I rarely ever read chat fics, they're just not my thing. BUT this one had me wheezing on my way to school. It's crack. Just treat it like crack

Modern college/uni AU. In his defence, James never expected to meet his soulmate at thirteen minutes past eleven on a Sunday morning when he’s aiming a puck at Sirius’ balls.
Or: call me sweetheart again and I'll punch you in the throat.
Not a Clue by PotterandEvans (on ao3)
Modern college/uni Quarantine AU. Lily stood in the doorway of the flat, looking at the boy in front of her. She had spent most of the last two years keeping her distance from the annoying piece of work, staying away from his ego mostly. “Come in.” She said, stepping away from the doorway to let him into the flat that she usually shared with Remus.
"Ah, so kind." James muttered as he walked inside, his heavy bag weighing him down. This really was not the ideal situation, for either of them. But he had nowhere else to go, so staying with Lily Evans it was going to have to be.
they were zoommates (requires an ao3 account) by elanev91 (on ao3)
Modern college/uni Quarantine AU. Lily's on lockdown and, because she can't help herself, signs herself up for a whole bunch of extra (and free) work with her ad agency. Minerva, her boss, assigns a cheeky social media manager to her team to help her. Also, Marlene discovers TikTok (this is nowhere near as important to the narrative as its inclusion here suggests).
And You Heard About Me (Ooh, We’ve Got Some Big Enemies!) by @wearingaberetinparis
Fame AU. Lily Evans is a Grammy-winning singer-songwriter and global superstar, who recently broke up from her latest and long-term actor boyfriend Amos Diggory. James Potter is a professional football player who plays as a forward for Manchester United and has never been quiet about his celebrity crush: Lily Evans. When Lily Evans thus plays at Wembley Stadium - a place he is more than familiar with due to his being part of the England team - he just has to go and see her perform, embracing his inner, besotted fan boy, while the woman on stage is completely oblivious to his presence. Or is she?
The most unrealistic part was man u winning (but it's James so that explains it). Regardless, I started this fic while waiting for my final grades from last year to come through, and while they were disappointing, this sure wasn't. I was crying so hard that I fell asleep. Then I woke up and continued the fic and suddenly I was giggling along with Lilly. Anything and everything Mary writes is a masterpiece. Thank you for sharing this wonderful story.
it continues (the beginning doesn't matter) by whitesunlars (on ao3)
She is the last person he expected at his door at that exact moment, despite feeling unsure about the fact that she managed to track down his address, he agrees to go out to coffee with her. A lot could be said about James Potter, but nobody could claim that he had good self-preservation skills.
They meet in a bar. Mistakes happen. They learn to keep going.

When Night Comes
Lily Rose Evans is a vampire with experience that almost exceeds three hundred years; wandering through countries, cultures and situations, she plays with other people's hearts, collects souls, and faces eternity as a punishment given to her when she was still young, after a juvenile attitude by her and her best friend. Lily and Marlene return to London in the 19th century, disguising themselves among debutantes who tirelessly search for a husband, while the two have no intention of finding one for themselves. However, Lily ends up having her path crossed by Viscount Potter, said to be the man most wanted by mothers, who hides inside the family bakery. After three centuries with her heart frozen in her chest, Lily is faced with the feeling that made her die: Love.
a simple moodboard with photos that inspired me to write
This was a fanfic created on a random Tuesday, while I was at the gym and talking to my friend about our life as a vampire, what we would be like, what we would do, how we would live, and then I started writing a draft and having fun. with this idea, until I realized that our characters looked like Lily and Marlene. So, When Night Comes was born. I don't expect it to be a long fanfic with many chapters, nor do I expect big plots or things like that, it's just fun and a pastime on my vacation.
(ironically I only needed to change the names of the characters, because without us noticing, my friend and I gave our vampires red and black hair)
Soon I will release what I believe to be the first chapter of 3, I need to start translating and editing :)

"Unfortunately, most of the women didn't know they were oppressed. They were brought up in a particular, very strict society, they had to take care of their families, they had mouths to feed, they had work to do. They couldn't even read. And for most of those women, political activism was simply something out of their reach. This is why seeing overtly feminist characters in movies kind of doesn't always work for me. Because, no, your average Becky the Baker's Daughter will not be delivering a speech to her Seamstress Cousin about how men treat her as an object. She simply wouldn't have time for that. But, that being said, women had their ways. They didn't go around shouting feminist slogans in the 17th century, but a lot of women were able to go for their lives like a badass, fucking battery ram. And I'm not only talking about scientists and queens and famous women. Maybe your average Becky the Baker's Daughter couldn't become a lawyer, but that doesn't mean she didn't come over her dad's baking business when he passed away and become the most successful baker in the neighborhood. And maybe her Seamstress Cousin wouldn't be able to attend the university, but that didn't mean she didn't completely rule her household or teach her husband to respect her for who she is." - Karolina Zebrowska
Inspired by this very long post that is worth reading.

It’s so creepy how people take a completely platonic relationship between two heterosexual male characters WITH WIVES and obsess over how “gay” they are. All it shows is you weirdos have no idea what a best friend is or what genuine friendship is or what healthy platonic relationships are period.

So XLH and DFQC can only switch bodies when they kiss during a lightning strike
And the entire plot point of episodes 11-13 is that they have to wait for a storm to switch back & are stuck
A couple of episodes later we learn that the Moon Tribe has a special lil machine that can summon lightning by drums that they use to punish people with but nevertheless...
...
So DFQC is a clown (affectionate)

It’s not even that DFQC is a 38,000 year old virgin, because of COURSE he is, that makes this so funny, it’s that he is so, so insistent that Xiao Lanhua emphatically knows this. He’s so aghast!
‘I don’t need to prove my innocence to you!’ What in the regency era romance is that line, DFQC.

the whole reason why darcy and elizabeth work as a couple is that they're both haters. they are such petty bitches. all they want to do is stand in the corner at the ball snickering at everybody like statler and waldorf. the fact that the nearly insurmountable barrier of elizabeth being from a slightly lower strata of the landed gentry is overcome by their mutual love of snark is just so beautiful to me

One of my favorite things about Pride and Prejudice is the Bennet family’s complete cluelessness about Darcy and Elizabeth. Like, if this were a tv show about the Bennets, Darcy and Elizabeth are like, the D storyline. The whole family is trying to get Jane and Bingley together, the regiment is stationed in Meryton, Mr. Collins is taking the house, Lydia and Wickham are obviously the climax, these people have a lot going on. And then, once the regiment has left and Jane and Lydia and Mr. Collins are married and everything seems resolved: plot twist! They’ve got random nobility at the door in the middle of the night telling the know-it-all sister who has been home on and off through the year not to marry the rando rich guy they all hate simply because they’re family and loyal to each other damnit and he called the know-it-all sister ugly once.
And then, of course, they all find out Lizzy and Darcy are actually very in love and literally all of the good things that have happened to them this year are a direct consequence of Darcy loving Lizzy lolol.

Maybe the thing that makes Austen the gold standard of romance is her focus on "esteem" as the all-important factor in a relationship. Your partner has to be someone you can respect. They have to have traits you admire. You have to value them, not just for the security they can provide or the feelings they give you, but as a separate, unique person.
This is so different from the bad romances I see in so many other places, where the two people are attracted to each other almost against their will. They'll be like, "I hate him and everything he stands for, but I just can't stop thinking about him," or the girl will obsess over the guy's body or whatever. We're supposed to believe that this attraction overcomes all the obstacles so they'll fall in love. But as a reader, I'm looking on like, "Okay, but do you even like him? What is there that you find admirable about him? Do you respect his judgement, his skills, his values? Why am I supposed to believe he'll be a good partner for you just because you stopped bickering for five minutes?"
Austen doesn't forget that the purpose of a romance is not to find someone who makes you happy now, but someone who'll be a good partner to help you navigate the rest of your adult life. You have to engage your mind as well as your heart to find someone that you can respect as a separate person before you can join hands in marriage.
