Remaking Magical America
While making an OC who grew up in America, I remade some parts of magical America and wanted to share cause fuck it also i didn't google for SHIT during this just as a warning-
I think someone years ago once counted the population of wizards in the UK + Republic of Ireland, and it's like, 0.1% of the total population, which puts Hogwarts school numbers in the hundreds, but moving that same percentage to America puts that same age range in the thousands. So, yeah, the idea that one school in America is amazingly stupid. The next question is....if not one, then how many? And the answer is about 50, maybe more.
SO- "Magickind" population vs muggle populations ranges from state to state, which drives some variation in the school count. Most states have one school for that state, but some states have big enough populations to require multiple. Others, however, don't have a large population and pool into a regional school or the next state over.
Alaska and Hawaii have their own because they're so isolated from general America geographically. Yeah, there are teleportation spells, but they're outside the range of what is considered non/less-regulated teleportation, so it's more difficult.
Students who live near state borders could file paperwork to attend the closer school, but also with magic teleportation shit idk if anyone would actually care about distance. I have no headcanons on general magical transportation, though. Um, fuck it- magic school busses?
Some schools are boarding schools, and some are day schools.
In my mind, one example of a regional school could be in the northeast New England area, which could also date back to colonial America and therefore could predate any official state lines.
Salem Academy for Witches is actually canon, so there should be a counterpart for wizards. This example of gender-based segregation is another reason there are multiple schools in America.
I don't want to get too deep into it, but there could also be some racially segregated schools. At least historically. Like real-life HBCUs. There are also schools that historically forced Eurocentric-magic assimilation on Native Americans, but those are now defunct, and new schools are popping up that celebrate and revitalize traditional customs.
Now, where to hide 50+ magical schools across America? I was thinking many could pass off as some boarding school or abandoned building on private property, using the same spells Hogwarts does to keep muggles from thinking about it too hard. But also I love the idea of using State Parks to hide schools, as well as magical settlements for non-human sapient species, and creatures/animals/beasts. Park Rangers being almost exclusively magical people whose main job is to hide magic from muggles is so funny. (btw i'm not calling them no-maj's, that's just a bad name)
I dont remember where Ilvermorny is in canon, but i don't care. Here, Ilvermorny could be the regional school for the New England area, possibly founded in New York. New York added another one when NYC booms in population and they have a shitton of more people, and the melting pot of cultures. Maybe multiple more schools.
So, in my mind, it makes sense that Ilvermorny is Hogwarts 2.0. Like, if it were made by settlers who went to Hogwarts, it makes sense that it is based in that tradition and style. That's what the people founding it know. But it also screams shitty school that never grew past it's knockoff roots. SO-
Yeah, they have houses. Maybe they rename them to "clubs" or some shit, idk. I don't hate the idea that settlers were inspired by the new local fauna or flora they saw, but maybe as the years go by, they change the mascots because it does feel very "culturally appropriating."
New sorting system because all I remember about the canon one is that it's stupid and convoluted. Maybe you pick a club. Regardless, you CAN SWITCH. This is not one-and-one.
Also, because I think this is stupid in canon, there are magical grade schools that are often hyper-local. This gives parents who work a safe place for their children to learn, and if any accidental magic occurs, they will be around magical adults who can help. Maybe there is still are large population who traditionally homeschools, but there should also be a grade school option to operate as daycare.
Conversely, there are a lot of professions that should require more educational training, like law and medicine, so there SHOULD be some university or trade school options. These should function as regular universities, and like how I outlined the other schools above.
There should be liberal use of spells that make the inside-bigger-than-the-outide like what we see with the tent the Weasleys use at the Quidditch World Cup. This means we could clown-car our way into making schools a normal size while actually being able to house a large number of students.
Getting carried away now with my last thing: basic non-wand magic is common in America. Like, being able to move small objects around like a mug, or magically pushing a button far away. This ensures that if wands are taken away, they can get them back more easily.

growing up with dudley's hand-me-downs only allowed for a minimal amount of girly clothing. maybe a dress for events where petunia couldn't escape taking harry. they're always ugly and frilly and petunia's styling and harry hates it. for transfem harry she always lingered on women's magazines and department stores she was dragged across and this is me getting into more girl's trip of harry getting a new wardrobe with skirts, cute dresses, nice tops, etc. not dudley's hand-me-downs.
oh my god the fun dress-shopping shenanigans for the yule ball....
fun headcanon idea or whatever: harry being born a girl or transfem and always wanted her ears pierced, but because the dursley's would absolutely not let harry have any joy, she instead gets her ears pierced while at hogwarts. make it designated girl time with hermione and maybe the other gryffindor girls. it's either a fun girl's trip to a magical parlor shop or a chaotic girl's night at the dorms. magical earrings that change colors! magical animal-style earrings! magical jewelry sounds so cool...

reboots are a plague of the entertainment industry and encourage a lack of imagination and creative risks. The tv show will cover what's already been put to screen through the phenomenal movie series and the show never hold a candle to the movies or have any redeeming qualities because for every side character/moment/scene it shows that the movies didn't, there will be every scene the movies did do, and did infinitely better in every way. There are better ways to use the IP that the fans have been begging for, and I'm sure somebody could write up new and unique storylines. This just screams desperation and "cashgrab" because the author has lost respect over the years and doesn't have any creative bones left in her body since it's been consumed by transphobia and bigotry. It's only been about a decade since the movie series finished, two decades since the books finished, and 3 years since the last prequel movie came out (idk if it's a finished series, but i think so despite rumors.). There is no need to reboot the original series. The tv series will forever be unable to leave the shadow of the movie series. It'll add nothing new or worthwhile. It'll just be compared. The actors will be hated on by the internet for taking a part in it, even the child actors who just want a big break. The core audience largely hates anything that requires giving the author money, so most people would probably try to pirate it, if they even care enough to watch it in the first place. So why make it? Why bother? What's the point?

upon reflection nearly headless nick and harry were bros honestly like not only did harry skip a delicious feast to attend nick鈥檚 deathday party but also when sirius died the first person harry really spoke to about it was nick to ask him about the possibility of sirius becoming a ghost? and like harry always makes a point of speaking to nick at every welcoming feast and in turn nick always looks out for harry when he鈥檚 up to shenanigans and gets really offended anytime anyone tries to question that he鈥檚 harry potter鈥檚 primary ghost friend and ally. a truly iconic friendship

i was watching the sixth movie and realized how fucked up the cave scene was like dumbledore told harry to keep him drinking that poison and force it down his throat if needed and harry had to keep at it even after his mentor and one of the few positive adults in his life yelled at him to "kill me" and even the act of trying to get the elderly man water after everything was done couldn't fucking work out because the only available water was in the lake filled with fuckin' zombie creature things that dragged harry in and almost drowned him. and so harry takes him back and it leads to dumbledore's death and the absolute mindfuck of guilt of THAT scene.

every so often im reminded about how fantastic beasts and where to find them as a concept was WASTED on the battle with gindlewald. like, don't get me wrong- the idea of a trilogy showing the build up and active war and seeing a young dumbledore and all that is super interesting, but i always hated the combination of that and the fantastic beast book series. like, frankly, i didn't need or want newt scamander to be a war hero and confidant of dumbledore, i wanted him to be magical steve irwin. i really wish there was an alternate world where we got a spin-off tv series about how newt wrote his book series and it was just that. it's him, a journal, and a dream of traveling the world and meeting different wizards and muggles for a rotating door of characters from different cultures and sometimes they return for a reunion episode. it'd actually flesh out the wizarding world better than the movie series, too, because i'm kinda super tired of "fleshing out" a world just meaning "america and europe with maybe a mention of someplace else, but mostly america and europe."

i like how as readers we don't know who all the pretty girls are bc harry doesn't always notice but we know who all the hot guys are because harry notices every single time and tells us
like it's not till book 4 that we even find out padma and parvati are considered 2 of the most attractive girls in the year. and even then that's only because another character comments on it to harry.
