A Writers Guide To: Villains

If theres anything you much know about me, it's that I. LOVE. VILLAINS. They literally give me life. Based on a decent amount of research, I'll provide some of the tips I've learned on writing villains.
But first:
What's A Villain?
A villain is different than an antagonist. Antagonists are just out there to annoy or make life harder for your protagonist.
Villains however, not only make life harder for the protagonist but they also do other things for their own personal gain. Some villains have redemption arcs, others...are far...FAR from redemption.
Traits Of A Villain
Villains in stories are usually likeable, charming, charismatic, etc. They show the good traits of themselves to deceive the protagonist.
Villains are usually manipulative. They use their charms to their advantage in order to get what they want. They're ambitious. Cunning and clever. I don't think I've heard of any "dumb" villains.
But villains weren't always manipulative. They had to learn or develop it from somewhere.
Villain Backstories
Oh this is what I live the most about Villains. Their backstories.
Backstories can give your reader a reason to care about the villain, at least a tiny bit. Their backstories don't excuse their actions. Thats one thing I feel like I need to bring up. BACKSTORIES DONT EXCUSE ACTIONS. It might explain them, but its not an excuse.
Villains can have a wide range of back stories. The most common one is a tragic backstory and it's typically used in most stories.
Redemption Arcs
I will probably do a separate post on this but, REDEMPTION ARCS ARE MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE! It literally shows how the villain wants to be a better person and they're trying. They're trying so hard and its just 🥺
Redemption arcs for a villain, isn't easy for the character, depending on the severity of the things they've done. Some things, are just unforgivable. Other things, well, they can be forgiven over time.
Again, I'll do a separate post on this but, if there's one thing that's key to a redemption arc, its that, your villain should struggle for a bit, but they should also be doing the best they can. They may fall at times, but they also need the support to help them get back on their feet.
What I personally don't care for, is when a villain is killed off right as the end of their redemtion arc *cough* Kylo Ren *cough*. Like seriously, can we talk about that for a second? He shouldn't have been killed. Don't @ me on this.
