oh dear my mind got activated
So like, Link (Twilight, but we'd be talking before LU so i'm inclined to call him Link here) would live in the desert in a Gerudo town, right? And his town gets wiped out. Why?
Maybe because there were rumors of the birht of a little boy, a new Gerudo King, a new "Ganondorf". So the Hylian army went in to check the rumors and assas and eliminate the threat. The "king" would still be a child, so maybe the exact orders would've been "capture if possible" rather than "kill on sight", but with the whole 'male Gerudo = bad' they wouldn't be too gentle either.
Link, at that time, is still very young. Four, maybe five years old? He doesn't really understand what's happening. Link is called "Link" after the hero, in attempt to convince the hostile Hylians to not see him as a threath. It (clearly) doesn't really work, which is also why the Gerudo tried to keep his existence a secret.
(It might also be a reaction on his triforce, if he already has it back then. Maybe the Gerudo know their history, their symbolism. They know little Link doesn't have the triforce of power, but rather the triforce of courage. That's why they call him after the Hero rather than their "King". I'm assuming they didn't really like Ganondorf either by then; after all, he almost chased their people to extinction.)
But all of those precoutions (calling the little boy after a Hylian legend, keeping his existence secrit for outsiders, raising him in a calm, peacefull environment) are deemed naught when the Hylian army comes nonetheles. The Gerudo chief refuses to just give the little boy up to the army. She knows they're biased, and she knows Link is a good child. He's nothing like Ganondorf. If the army want to get him, they'll have to come and take him.
So they do.
The Gerudo are a fierce people. They can put up a fight, and they do. But there aren't a lot of them left, and they aren't very well prepared for war. After the last war they've lost, the Gerudo had to give up a lot of their autonomy.
It's just- not a fair fight. They never could've won.
The army invades the town.
Cut to Rusl, who's a soldier in the army at the time! He joined in for the money (of which a lions share he sends back to Ordon) and the travels; Rusl was a bit of an adventurous lad. But he's got a lady back home (yeah, you know her. Our dear Uli). He's planning on quitting soon. This, he knows, will be his last mission in the army. He has said goodbye to his friends (Auru, mostly) he's had his last paycheck, the whole thing. All he has to do is - I don't know. Sign of his contract? Something like that.
Of course, Rusl has heard of the tales of the Gerudo King. This is the biggest operation he's ever seen in the army, but if this man is even a thenth of the threath the stories paint him to be, it makes sense! The King almost destroyed Hyrule. Apparently, he's more monster than man.
Still, the brutality of his fellow soldiers when they conquer the town takes him of guard.
Once they're properly in, it becomes clear the Gerudo have hid their King. The leader (whatever their rang might be) of the army that's effectively in the town gives the order to search for their target. The goal is still to capture him alive, but if he fights back, violence will be tolerated.
Mind, every soldier knows they're looking for what looks like a child, but at that point, none of them reallye believe the infamous Gerudo King will, in fact, be a child. They don't think of him as a child. He's a threath, a danger, something to take out before it's uncontrollable.
Anyway, the soldiers split up to search the town, and they're not gentle about it. They start interrogating their prisoners, brutally. Homes get burned down, ravage is sown. It's a mess.
It's a slaughter.
Rusl... he's still convinced from the danger this King could be, but this is more than a little excessive. He tries to be kind where no one else seems to be. He distracts fellow soldiers when they go too far. He puts out fires where he can. He gives food to forgotten prisoners.
It's not much, but he tries.
Maybe that's why Rusl found him. Maybe the Gerudo hoped he'd be reasonalbe. They knew by then the Hylians wouldn't go away without their child.
So Rusl finds him. Link.
When there's no other soldiers around.
And he knows he's supposed to bring this Gerudo King in, but...
This is-
a child.
Rusl is no idiot. He knows the Hylian royalty doesn't want this child to live. He realises, right then and there, that this child won't survive if he surrenders it to the army.
And Rusl has a wife. Maybe they're trying for a child. Maybe she's already pregnant. And Rusl knows-
If he gives up on this child, he'll never, never forgive himself. He's going to be a father. How can he be a father if he kills this child, directly or indirectly?
He can't. He can't.
So Rusl holds out his hand to this frightened little toddler, and says:
"Hi there, little one. I'm Rusl. Who're you?"
And the child looks at his hand, at his gentle smile, at the sword on his hip. And he looks up with eyes as blue as the desert sky, and says:
"I'm Link."
Rusl leaves the army that night, and takes the child with him to Ordon. He dyes Links hair a dark brown, trying to conceal the bright red that would betray him as Gerudo. They keep of the main roads. They get to Ordon without much trouble.
Rusl writes Auru, later. He knows Auru will understand. Auru makes sure no one looks for him, makes sure no one can link the lost Gerudo King to the boy now growing up in Ordon. Link is safe.
Gerudo town gets destroyed. The Hylian army spends months in that desert, trying to find a child that's long gone by then. The Gerudo get driven to extinction.
(If you wish, Telma's backstory could also tie back to this event. She must've been a young woman back then; maybe she got hurt and met Renado when he was trying to heal her. He was still an apprentice back then, but they fell in love and it developed in a drama romance thing. In the end, they broke up and Telma moved to the Castle Town. It's more familiar than Kakariko. More people. It puts her at ease.
She never stopped loving Renado, though.)
GIVE ME MORE GERUDO TWILIGHT. FRAME TWILIGHT PRINCESS AS THE REDEMPTION OF THE GERUDO KING. GIVE HIM A BACKSTORY BEFORE ORDON VILLAGE OF BEING A TODDLER WHEN HIS TOWN WAS WIPED OUT. PLEEEEEAAAASE I NEED ITTTTTT
