That design document predated the decision to exclude gay relationships in the game. Its pages described a web of social interactions, in which every kind of romantic relationship was permitted. That week, Barrett confounded the expectations of his disbelieving boss. He successfully wrote the basic code for social interactions, including same-sex relationships. 

“In hindsight, I probably should have questioned the design,” Barrett, who is gay, said. “But the design felt right, so I just implemented it. Later, Will Wright stopped by my desk,” Barrett said. “He told me that liked the social interactions, and that he was glad to see that same-sex support was back in the game.” Nobody on the team questioned Barrett’s work. “They just pretty much ignored it,” he said. “After a while, everyone was just used to the design being there. It was widely expected that E.A. would just kill it, anyway.”

In early 1999, before E.A. had a chance to kill the design, Barrett was asked to create a demo of the game to be shown at E3. The demo would consist of three scenes from the game. These were to be so-called on-rails scenes—not a true, live simulation but one that was preplanned, and which would shake out the same way each time it was played, in order to show the game in its best light. 

One of the scenes was a wedding between two Sims characters. “I had run out of time before E3, and there were so many Sims attending the wedding that I didn’t have time to put them all on rails,” Barrett said.

On the first day of the show, the game’s producers, Kana Ryan and Chris Trottier, watched in disbelief as two of the female Sims attending the virtual wedding leaned in and began to passionately kiss. They had, during the live simulation, fallen in love.

TIL i learned that the team behind The Sims had originally decided to leave same-sex relationships out of the game until a newbie on the team by the name of Patrick J. Barrett III coded all basic interactions of the game due to one of his senior team members being on vacation, TIL Barrett unknowingly had been given an old design document and everyone just assumed someone else had reversed their previous decision and rolled with it, and TIL that all that plus a rushed demo led to the team’s presentation at that year’s E3 featuring an unplanned lesbian kiss

Homestuck spoilers but the coolest shit Homestuck ever did was in the final showdown of [S] Collide when they had all the god tier kids combine their powers during battles to pull some sick strats/combos like when Dirk died during battle and Terezi/Dave stepped up to the plate to combine their Mind/Time powers to fucking splice Dirks from different timelines into the Dirk from their timline and fucking bring him back to life!? And you can’t just time travel willy nilly in Homestuck because if you do something that wasn’t meant to happen you’ll fuck up everything and create a DOOMED Timeline where everyone is meant to die, but Terezi’s Mind powers charted out the PERFECT path for Dave’s Time powers to do all their time travel shenanigans and fucking CHEAT death without causing a doomed timeline. Do you know how insane that is!? Death is such a powerful construct in Homestuck that even Life players can only use their powers ONCE to bring someone back to life and these two mofos just fucking did it anyways without even BEING Life players. Even the big bad final boss Jack Noir had to back up for a sec after witnessing that like “Dafuq did these kids just do?…”

Oh and also Jane’s Dad pied a mf so hard in the face the resulting impact caused a literal castle spire to crumble.

Classspect Stuff: Failure States

Hey-ho! Two explainy posts in one day! Aren’t I a saint :3

As we all know, Aspects hold both positive and negative connotations, and classes are no different. They have what i like to call “Failure States”, or a state of being in which the person/class is at their absolute lowest, and usually when they do their big pivotal bad moments.

Let’s start with Heirs. An Heirs failure state is completely becoming their aspect. Not just in the sense of being an Heir, but they more become symbols of their aspect or tools of it rather than people. Equius’ own blood was used to hide information (becoming Void, ie mystery), and Mituna made a huge sacrifice that severely altered his state of mind (he became Doomed, through sacrifice). John seems to be exempt from doing this frequently, though it’s likely because he has more prominence and seeing him fail a bunch would be disheartening. 

Now the active counterpart, Witches. Witches are similar to Heirs in that their failure state involves being used as a tool, though because Witches are more active and break the rules of their aspect, this has more volatile effects on others. Heirs affect things passively when they fail, often having to do with them. Witches seem to have a greater impact on the world around them, with it having little to do with themselves. Jade, under Grimbark mode, used Space to basically send people wherever the Condesce wanted. Damara used her Time abilities to do whatever Lord English wanted, and… well Feferi didn’t really have a failure state. I guess serving her lusus kind of counts under Life?

A Seer’s failure state is when they… see too much, possibly. Seers undergo terrible transformations (Rose and Grimdark), terrible thoughts and feelings (Terezi testing timelines out on Dave, one of which he dies in and she is distraught), and Kankri (never shuts up). Their failure state seems to be less intense, given Terezi and Kankri, however this has devestating effects on the person who is likely the team’s strategizer. No one wants to listen to Kankri as he is too far in his failure state and wont stop talking, and Terezi is often crippled by her thoughts (too much Mind) to the point that she has depressive episodes. A Seer’s failure state also tends to push people away from them, hurting them even more.

A Mage’s failure state is completely giving up. Mages are the most likely to suffer from their aspect, and their job is to use their knowledge to help others and defend from it. However, failing to do so and giving up entirely enacts the Mage’s failure state. Sollux, being incredibly nihilistic and not doing much to prevent dying twice, and Meulin…. actually doesn’t seem to be in a failure state like most dancestors are. She’s still very optimistic about romance and Heart! Good for her :3

A Thief’s failure state is them taking so much of their aspect, there’s absolutely none left to take. Obviously seen in Meenah when she takes everyone’s lives, but also seen in Vriska when she manipulates things into being in her favor, but ONLY in HER favor. Of course, this makes the Thief an extremely controversial or even downright disliked person. This can lead to the Thief essentially “paying” for their crime, fitting of real thieves. Meenah dies as well, and Vriska is killed when she has her showdown with Terezi in a battle of luck.

A Rogue’s failure state is giving away their aspect too much. Think the Robin Hood archetype but to the extreme. Rufioh constantly gives his freedom away to his romantic entanglements (Damara takes it from him and Horuss just flat out denies it from him), Nepeta, while a caring soul, never leaves any Heart for herself. She even hides AWAY any shipping things related to herself. Roxy’s aspect is Void, and so she can’t really GIVE anything away, but rather is perpetually empty. She literally doesn’t HAVE anything to give, until she learns to create.
