I’ve been thinking about how James stole the show in Journey Beyond Sodor from the beginning. Rob Rackstraw really came through with the vocals and voice acting for this movie and you can really tell he understands James as a character (despite the flanderization in cgi, it’s still entertaining).

When engines see a person they are emotionally bonded to, they make strange clicking and popping sounds as soon as they're in sight. These noises are made with their teeth and throat, but it's often mistaken for their bones. The main man who gets this treatment on the NWR is none other than Sir Topham Hatt. He knows what it means, and he's flattered, but he finds it a little bit freaky.

Currently watching season 2 of TTTE, and like, I don’t get why in some old Internet fan media, Sir Topham hat is portrayed to be rude and careless towards his engines. Like- I’m watching the episode where he has to make a decision to send Douglas or Donald away- and Percy goes up to him nervously to lie about why he shouldn’t send them away. Topham looks so fondly at his engines; you can tell that he loves them, even though he might scold them for things that are out of their control.

A couple episodes before that- it’s the episode where Diesel spreads lies that Duck is talking crap about the steam team. When Gordon said that duck called him “a galloping sausage” and I forgot what James was called; but oh my gosh the fact that Topham had to stop himself from laughing is just pure adorable! He already knew Duck won’t spread those kinds of remarks and he has a sense of humor!

SLoTLT talk

Tbh I kinda disliked STH in this movie. SLoTLT was a fantastic movie, don't get me wrong but STH was the only character who I feel was a bit too mean in it. I understand he's a controller so he has to be strict and bossy, but he didn't even let Thomas explain ANYTHING of what happened.

When Thomas derailed Gordon's coaches, he tried explaining to Sir Topham Hatt what happened and likely due to panicking, he ended up blaming Emily and Gordon. Also, the whole thing wouldn't have happened if Gordon hadn't teased him. Did STH ever think to ask around for what happened?? He could've asked Annie and Clarabel, or even James or the workers!

Also, about Thomas's behaviour; there's people who complain that Thomas is too dickish in the movie, but...isn't that kinda part of his character? Thomas has ALWAYS been a cheeky prick, and if you look at the Unlucky Tug's movie ranking vid, he mentions that SLoTLT is where Thomas's personality is TOTALLY CORRECT. Yeah, he was also in the wrong for the incident at Knapford, but again, Gordon set him off into a cheeky mood. I reckon if Gordon hadn't said anything, Thomas probably wouldn't have done that.

Also, I can I just say that the antagonist, Sailor John is absolutely RUTHLESS?! He blows up Knapford station, he wacks Thomas in the face with an ore and throws live dynamite at him! It's not sugar-coated in any way. I'm also sure he abuses Skiff?? He stomps on his deck, kicks him and threatens him. That's pretty dark, in fact the whole Sailor John part of the movie is dark.

I wish people talked about the movie and this villian more. One more thing; if you've ever looked at the wiki about him, it says he was originally part of the Royal Navy! This guy has lore.

Ttte swearing headcanons

Thomas: swears at least once a day when nobody is around, thinks saying no-no words is funny

Edward: never said a bad word in his life, will remind everyone to watch their language

Henry: would if he could but knows that swear words hurt people.

Gordon: thinks swearing is undignified, despicable, disgraceful, and disgusting.

James: doesn’t swear except for that time he derailed when his brake blocks were on fire.

Percy: learned a new word, uses it, until he’s told that it’s a bad word

Toby: scolds Percy and Thomas for foul language, swear police

Duck: thinks that swearing is not the Great Western Way ™. Swear police no. 2

Donald: swears in his sleep when he’s stressed out.

Douglas: will swear occasionally for fun

Oliver: will swear occasionally when Duck and toad aren’t around

Emily: is a proper lady and thinks swearing isn’t ladylike

Salty: picked up his vocabulary from the sailors. Has quite the sailor mouth

Duncan: if Diesel has a septic tank mouth, then Duncan has an entire sewage treatment plant mouth. He uses words like !!$&#!!, !!$#&!!, and !!$#&!! So liberally that they are now conservative.

Omgg yess that’s what legit sent me into the “he’s definitely in papa mode at this point” and I haven’t found any other episodes where he refers to the other engines like that; he very much has a soft spot for James it seems 🥲💕

I kind of find it funny bc I think in the model series (correct me if I’m wrong) James is referred to as an older engine (not old like Edward but just old) so I find it endearing they either de-aged him or it’s just the way sir Topham hatt refers to them bc they are his young steam children no matter what 🥹

Small JBS rant/hot take;

I'm sorry but there's NO WAY Thomas wasn't traumatised from what Frankie and Hurricane did to him.

I like Frankie and Hurricane as villians or even redeemed villians, but I hate that they got away scot-free with what they did to Thomas because they were "lonely". They literally took advantage of him and took away his freedom. What's worse is that I think the steelworks employees were in on it too, so probably not even Thomas's crew could do anything.
