Crashing Americans Expectations of Hostels
Almost nightly at Hostel Fish’s bar- The Exchange Rate- I have people tell me incredulously that they had no idea there were even hostels in the United States; that they’d always thought it was simply a European thing.  They also take a look around the bar and lounge areas, go out to the balcony, maybe pass through the restrooms, and when they return say something along the lines of “this place is really beautiful. Such a nice space!” before inquiring more about the hostel; i.e. what it’s like sleeping in a room with other people, how much bunks costs, are we continuously full, etc.  After the exclamations, it’s not uncommon for a seasoned traveler at the bar to enthusiastically back them up by saying “yeah, Hostel Fish is definitely one of the nicest hostels I’ve ever stayed at. It’s great.”  Hostels are a blossoming industry in the United States, and Hostel Fish, in particular, strives to be at the forefront of reinventing Americans notions about hostels. We push always to offer a clean, attractive space at a reasonable rate, where everyone feels comfortable to socialize and rest before continuing on with their respective adventures.  Welcome to Hostel Fish! We hope you enjoy your stay!

Happy New Year!!!
As the end of another year draws near, we at Hostel Fish would like to send out a big thank you to all of our wonderful guests, and exceptional employee-crew! It’s been a hell of a year! We’ve implemented many cool and creative ideas that are all designed to enhance guest experience. Throughout the year, we’ve also renovated most of our dorm rooms in an effort to maximize guest comfort. All in all, it’s been a very busy year, and we’re proud of all the hard work we’ve put into the hostel for our guests. We are very thankful for all of the love and support, and hope everyone enjoys their stay at Hostel Fish. Have a fun and festive night, and be safe! See you in 2020!

Happy Thanksgiving!
Thursday evening was an enjoyable and pleasant time around Hostel Fish! We hosted our 3rd annual Friendsgiving, and invited our hostel guests and neighborhood friends to join us for a potluck-style dinner.  The hostel provided a turkey, which was fantastic, and I brought a honey-glazed ham, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, brussel sprouts, and a couple of pies. A few of the work-stay folks prepared other traditional ethnic dishes, including arroz con gandules. It was a bountiful feast for all!
With warm food in front of us, we went around the bar and each listed a few things we were thankful for.
Among that list were: -- “To have a friend group that is supportive and generally more positive than negative. Probably for the first time ever.”
-- “Creative Expression”
-- “Having a great job opportunity and situation here.”
-- “Being able to travel and explore the world.”
-- “That we were all able to bring food and hang out tonight.”
-- “For having a great friend group here in Denver, and a good relationship with my family back home.”
-- “Being alive. Nothing more or less.” With the hearty food, wine, and friends- and the snow outside- Hostel Fish felt very homey.   Happy Thanksgiving,
Everyone!

Seize the Carpe!
Tumblr media
“Life is a short, warm moment And death is a long cold rest. You get your chance to try in the twinkling of an eye: Eighty years, with luck, or even less.”
                                           --Free Four, Pink Floyd
And so set sail for the American tour!
Travel far, travel wide, and often in between. Live out of a backpack, throw your thumb out over the asphalt, feel the wind in your hair; go see the ocean just to feel the ocean, break trail and camp up high under crazy stars...because why not? You really only have one chance to.
Here at Hostel Fish, we love to travel. We love the adventure of waiting in line at the gate at the airport, hoping they don’t actually check the dimensions of our “personal item” backpack; we dig grabbing the window seat, because the aerial perspective is just too cool; we thrill with the deep breath just before the plane wheels touch down on the runway; we jump at taking public transportation, especially when everything is in a different language because it feels more personal; and we love checking into a travelers hostel in a new place, not knowing exactly what to expect, or who we’ll meet, or what adventure will unfold. It’s what gets the blood flowing, it’s what keeps us happy to strive through the “musts” of daily living.  Our love of travel is why we also love to host like-minded adventurers. We know what it’s like to lug the pack around for miles and miles, and want to roll it off the shoulders at the end of the day and grab a local beer. Therefore, we strive to offer an affordable, comfortable hostel with outstanding amenities to create an unforgettable base-camp experience.  “Come sleep with us!”

Where will your travel plans take you next?!  My queue looks like: -San Diego for a quick, 3-day ocean getaway.
-San Francisco for New Years to see Dead and Co’s fun-run shows.
-Mexico City/Acapulco in February for tequila, tacos, and fun in the sun.
You gotta stay eager and hungry for new experiences, and I find that daily living seems more enjoyable when you’re looking forward to specific travel dates.
Also, God bless Denver International Airport’s relatively low priced flights!

As is typical with Denver weather, suddenly the snow seems far away again. In fact, it’s more of a prop-the-door-open-and-invite-the-passersby-up-to-the-bar type of night.... ...Happy Hour happening now! Come check us out.1217 20th St. :)

Ghost Town Shivers
Tumblr media
Anyone who has been to one of our annual Halloween parties knows that we like to do it big, and this year was no exception!  Saturday night saw Hostel Fish transformed into a haunted “ghost town”, with the ghosts of pioneers, gamblers, miners, ladies, madams, and corrupt law-men all rising up from restless sleeps for one last rendezvous. Brad kicked ass with building the decorations- most notably the abandoned, perilous mine shaft- and many of the employees helped string cob webs and place various props. Overall, the hostel looked hauntingly sweet, and everyone dressed their parts quite well. It was a hell of a party, and just before the snow came and blanketed the city and laid everything back to rest!!!  Thank you to all of our hostel guests for enjoying the festivities, and for everyone who worked so hard to make it happen!

There is a really cool new opportunity for you fine folks!  Michelle has organized a badass revitalization of our Final Friday Art Social.  Come by from 6pm-9pm to speak with local artists and browse through their selection of art that is available for purchase. There’s something for everyone!
Also, don’t forget about our wine specials. ($2 off all reds and whites from 6pm-9pm.)  It’s definitely a pleasant environment, and a good way to kick off a Friday evening.

Fall is in the Air, and Oktoberfest Down the Block
Tumblr media
Fall is in the air, and Oktoberfest is right down the block!  Enjoy a bratwurst with curry ketchup, while sipping German beer from a stein and tapping your feet to Polka music! That’s right, the annual Oktoberfest shindig that takes over several blocks in Lodo is back!
In addition to the mouthwatering food, thirst-quenching beer, and lively music, there are also a variety of merchant tents and a stage devoted to fun Oktoberfest games and challenges. The stein holding challenge is a fun one to watch...Do you have what it takes to break the record and win a trip to Munich, Germany?? Also, it’s a great time to slip out of the city and into the mountains for some golden-leaf viewing. This is one of our favorite things about the changing seasons in Colorado! Don’t forget to bring along a jacket and some coffee or hot tea; the temperature it is a’changin!

Aaaand that’s a rap!  Open mic, this last Saturday, was fantastic! There was a great turnout of local, talented musicians, and the bar sales were through the roof! Everyone in the audience had a big night.  By the way...we are really working hard to escalate the open mic. We’re experimenting with different lighting and sound techniques to enhance the overall experience for performers and audience members, alike. Plus, we shot some awesome promotional video, so stay tuned for that to be released! (Pun intended.)
Our objective is to help promote each artists music, and of course to have a lot of fun.  There are even plans to host a showcase at the end of each month with selected musicians from the months’ open mics...  Thanks to everyone who performed, and to everyone who hung out and grabbed drinks throughout the night!

Congratulations to this badass chick who found the Golden Cassette that’s hidden somewhere in Hostel Fish!!! Being the first person to ever legitimately find it, she received a Hostel Fish t-shirt and a full hour of free drinks at our bar- The Exchange Rate. Will you be as lucky? 😉
