Crashing Americans Expectations of Hostels
Almost nightly at Hostel Fish’s bar- The Exchange Rate- I have people tell me incredulously that they had no idea there were even hostels in the United States; that they’d always thought it was simply a European thing.  They also take a look around the bar and lounge areas, go out to the balcony, maybe pass through the restrooms, and when they return say something along the lines of “this place is really beautiful. Such a nice space!” before inquiring more about the hostel; i.e. what it’s like sleeping in a room with other people, how much bunks costs, are we continuously full, etc.  After the exclamations, it’s not uncommon for a seasoned traveler at the bar to enthusiastically back them up by saying “yeah, Hostel Fish is definitely one of the nicest hostels I’ve ever stayed at. It’s great.”  Hostels are a blossoming industry in the United States, and Hostel Fish, in particular, strives to be at the forefront of reinventing Americans notions about hostels. We push always to offer a clean, attractive space at a reasonable rate, where everyone feels comfortable to socialize and rest before continuing on with their respective adventures.  Welcome to Hostel Fish! We hope you enjoy your stay!

From Manchester to Paris and everywhere in between
From Manchester to Paris and everywhere in between
On the 26th September 2017, I said goodbye to my husband at Manchester airport and boarded a flight for Berlin. For those of who don’t already know, I have embarked on a five week solo trip around Europe interrailing, couchsurfing, and hosteling. “Alone? But why?!’ I’ve told many people who have asked me this that it’s because my husband couldn’t get the time off work and that we agreed I should…

Fall is in the Air, and Oktoberfest Down the Block
Tumblr media
Fall is in the air, and Oktoberfest is right down the block!  Enjoy a bratwurst with curry ketchup, while sipping German beer from a stein and tapping your feet to Polka music! That’s right, the annual Oktoberfest shindig that takes over several blocks in Lodo is back!
In addition to the mouthwatering food, thirst-quenching beer, and lively music, there are also a variety of merchant tents and a stage devoted to fun Oktoberfest games and challenges. The stein holding challenge is a fun one to watch...Do you have what it takes to break the record and win a trip to Munich, Germany?? Also, it’s a great time to slip out of the city and into the mountains for some golden-leaf viewing. This is one of our favorite things about the changing seasons in Colorado! Don’t forget to bring along a jacket and some coffee or hot tea; the temperature it is a’changin!

Austin Part One
So Austin was pretty spectacular. When I started this trip I had a list of a few places that I wanted to visit to see if I ever would want to movie there. Aside from the heat, Austin was amazing and is definitely near the top of that list. The only place that I have liked more is Washington D.C. and maybe Chicago in a close second. Austin though, felt a lot like Anchorage if the temperature in Anchorage were about 40° warmer. There was a good mix of both nature and developed land and it was overall just a very beautiful city. I fell in love with the feeing of the city and the friendliness of the people. Here are some of my highlights.
I arrived in Austin after enduring an 11 hour bus ride. It was a super long ride that started early in the morning which luckily meant that I got into Austin in midday as opposed to late at night. I immediately took an Uber to the hostel I wanted to stay at only to discover on arrival that their website was wrong and there were no beds available. Combine this with the 80° heat that was literally making my clothes drenched with sweat and I was not off to a great start. So I did the smart thing and actually booked 3 nights at a different hostel to ensure my spot there. I took another ride over to the new hostel and it appeared like no one was home. I couldn’t get in and got even more upset, especially since now I had actually spent the money for the rooms. I ended up walking away for a bit and exploring around the street that the hostel was on and then coming back. This is where I discovered a second entrance. Thank goodness. I knocked on the door and got greeted by the staff and entered one of the coolest hostels that I have been to so far. It’s a good thing that that other hostel was full or I never would have made it there.
This hostel was a house that is well over 100 years old and has a very southern appearance to it. Big wide halls. Tall staircases. Balconies to sit out on and watch the sunset. You name it. Combine this with a wall with a bunch of records on it and a fantastic living room meeting area that was cozy and it was an awesome experience. The staff as well were amazing and I made some really awesome friends at the hostel. The location was perfect too. Less than a half hour walk from both downtown and the Riverwalk. The perfect place to be. The bathroom even had a king sized tub in it. I haven’t seen a tub anywhere for almost this whole trip.
After admiring the hostel, I headed over to a bar that one of the staff recommended called The White Horse. This bar was as country as it gets. There was love country music, square / line dancing, cheap beer, super friendly people, a food truck in a little closed in outdoor area they had and just a perfect southern environment. I stayed there for a bit and then headed back early to do some laundry but I knew I would be back the next night. Two of the people I met at the bar were also on a road trip and we swapped stories and gave each other different tips and tricks that we had learned while also buying each other beers.
Walking back to the hostel at night wasn’t even that bad. While there are bad parts of Austin (like there are bad parts in any city), for the most part I didn’t feel unsafe at all. The people that passed me would usually say “good evening” or “howdy” and then be on their way. The coolest part about walking home at night though was listening to all of the crickets. I’ve never really heard lots of crickets all at once before and the volume of the chirping was amazing. I also really liked looking up into the sky at the stars. There were few enough lights out that there was almost no light pollution. This allowed me to see more stars than I typically get to see back home and it was super beautiful. Overall, though it started poor, my first night in Austin turned out to be pretty incredible.

Road Trip To Portland Oregon
Road Trip To Portland Oregon
Three homeless fill the doorways adjacent to the police station – Portland Oregon I was less than an hour into my drive from Portland Oregon back home to Bellingham Washington when I pulled off for gas. I was accelerating up the entrance ramp to rejoin I-5 when I noticed a figure standing on the side of the road. The only thing I could see clearly was the guitar case. I pulled over and the…
