The year is 2008.

Steve Harrington, bratty popstar who wasn't hugged enough as a child, finds himself in a one-sided rivalry with Eddie Munson's pop punk band, Freak Desmodus.

After trusting his friend and fan Dustin with an MP3 file, Steve is exposed as a bitterly envious person while Eddie rebuttals with humiliating sweetness. His PR manager's solution? Have Steve and Eddie let the paparazzi chase them around L.A. while they pretend to be BFFLs to fool the world that it's just some friendly competition, all a promotional stunt. Steve is begrudging at first, but when he finds out that Eddie's bubbly innocence goes deeper than surface level, how can he not like the guy? It's like not liking a puppy. Suddenly Steve finds himself in too deep, and it's just another overnight scandal waiting to happen.

Meanwhile, magazine columnist Nancy Wheeler tries to shred their careers to pieces while juggling a boyfriend she doesn't really want and a growing crush on a girl who's tangled up in it all and already in love with someone else.
