Safe (Emergency!)
https://archiveofourown.org/works/68577866
Summary: They keep each other safe. It's what they do.
“Hey, Roy, are you okay?”
“Uh, yeah. Yeah.”
Roy hears Johnny chattering, feels his fingers touch his forehead as he patches him up. Even in his daze, Roy feels comforted by Johnny’s touch, the knowledge that Johnny is looking out for him. God knows he’s done the same for Johnny countless times.
They keep each other safe. It’s what they do, part of their unspoken agreement.
“You’ve gotta be careful, Roy,” Johnny chides him in that casual tone, “This is a dangerous job.”
Roy laughs at that. They both know the dangers, but today they’re safe, and today that’s enough.

This is a post with general info about this event. You can find the prompts here:

The Summer of 51′s is a fandom event for the Emergency! (1972) fandom, which runs all throughout August, and is intended to be a yearly affair. It essentially consists of 31 prompts plus a few wildcards, which people can use as inspiration to produce fandom content.
While the original inspirations for this event - whumptober and such - largely revolved around fanfiction, all kinds of content are welcome: fic, art, meta posts, gifsets, video edits… you name it.
Basically none.
You can do as many prompts as you want to, whether that’s one or 31 doesn’t matter.
You can participate in any format you choose - art, writing, poetry, fiber arts, gifs, interpretive dance… whatever you choose!
You can interpret the prompts in any way you like; I didn’t have a “correct” interpretation in mind when I came up with them either.
You can start working on the prompts early if you’d like, though I’d suggest waiting until the day the prompt’s scheduled for to actually post the thing you made.
You can also start working on the prompts late - we appreciate late content all the same.
You can also work on prompts from past years (but if you post them to the AO3 collection, please put them in the collection for the year the prompt was from)
If you’d like, feel free to tag your finished works with “#summer of 51′s” - ideally in addition to any applicable fandom tags.
First and foremost, don’t sweat the details, have fun and share the fandom love!
Pretty much like you’d think - There’s prompts, one for each day of August, in the prompt list linked at the start of this post. You can take the prompts and make something fandom-related that’s inspired by them. If you’re feeling particularly generous, you then share the thing you made with the rest of us, optionally tagging it as “#summer of 51′s” in addition to whatever you’d normally tag it as.
If you’re not in the mood for a particular prompt, you can swap it out for a prompt from the “wildcard” pool at your leisure (or just skip it entirely, but the wildcards are more fun ;P).
There will also be daily posts with the Prompt Of The Day on each day in August, because I spent some serious time coming up with an aesthetic for this event and I fully intend to make that everybody else’s problem.

Hi gang,
over at Discord we discussed the appearance of three E! fellows there. In a particular episode. *grins*
The most known, of course:
Randolph Mantooth as Neil Williams
A little guessing game: Where's Marco? lol
And last but not least. Surprise ...
Barely recognizable but I heard the voice. Definitely Tim Donnelly!! *grins*
Unfortunately, they never had scenes together but would be in less than a year, I guess. Funny.
Enjoy!

jokes to make after failure that aren’t self-deprecating:
I’m the best to ever do it
Nobody saw that (best if said loudly)
No one’s ever done it like me
I could be President/they should make me President
Behold, a mere fraction of my power!
The public wants to be me soooooo bad
I’m an expert in (thing you just failed at)
How could this have happened to god’s favorite princess?
Nothing ibuprofen and a glass of water cant fix
I’m being sabotaged

Weirdly Healing Things to Do When You’re Feeling Creatively Burned Out...
Write a fake 5-star Goodreads review of your WIP—as if you didn’t write it. Go ahead. Pretend you're a giddy reader who just discovered this masterpiece. Bonus: add emojis, chaotic metaphors, and all-caps screaming. It’s self-indulgent. It’s delusional. It’s delicious.
Give your main character a Pinterest board titled “Mentally Unstable but Aesthetic.” Include outfits, quotes, memes, cursed objects, and that one painting that haunts their dreams. This is not about logic. This is about ✨vibes.✨
Make a “deleted scenes” folder and write something that would never make it into the book. A crackfic. A “what if they were roommates” AU. The group chat from hell. This is your WIP’s blooper reel. Let it be silly, chaotic, or wildly off-brand.
Interview your villain like you’re Oprah. Ask the hard-hitting questions. “When did you know you were the drama?” “Do you regret the murder, or just the way you did it?” Bonus points if they lie to your face.
Host a fake awards show for your characters. Categories like “Most Likely to Die for Vibes,” “Worst Emotional Regulation,” “Himbo Energy Supreme,” or “Best Use of a Dramatic Exit.” Write their acceptance speeches. Yes, this counts as writing.
Write a breakup letter… to your inner critic. Be petty. Be dramatic. “Dear Self-Doubt, this isn’t working for me anymore. You bring nothing to the table but anxiety and bad vibes.” Rip it up. Burn it. Tape it to your mirror. Your call.
Create a “writing comfort kit” like you’re a cozy witch. A candle that smells like your WIP. A tea that your characters would drink. A playlist labeled “for writing when I’m one rejection email away from giving up.” This is a ritual now.
Design a fake movie poster or book cover like your story is already famous. Add star ratings, critic quotes, and some pretentious tagline like “One soul. One destiny. No chill.”
Write a scene you’re not ready to write—but just a rough, messy outline version. Not the polished thing. Just the raw emotion. The shape of it. Like sketching the bones of a future punch to the gut. You don’t have to make it perfect. Just open the door.
Let your story be bad on purpose for a day. Like, aggressively bad. Give everyone ridiculous names. Add an evil talking cat. Write a fight scene with laser swords and emotional damage. Just remind yourself that stories are meant to be played with, not feared.

Love In All Its Forms
From the accidental matchmaker series. Rattled by Johnny's advice to Dixie, Kel Brackett does some soul searching.
Joe had been worried about his friend for quite some time. Admittedly, Kel's initial disapproval of his marriage strained their friendship for months, but it wasn't until Dixie announced her engagement that he noticed Kel really begin to change. So, with the hope of getting him to open up, Joe invited him to lunch at his club.
They met on a bright Sunday afternoon, and were seated in the dark, cool dining room at a table overlooking the beautifully manicured grounds.
“You've been quiet lately,” Joe said once their cold beer and club sandwiches were delivered. “Want to talk about it?”
Kel grimaced and took a long pull from his beer.
“You've been sitting on this for a while, haven't you?”
“Since Dix's wedding, but I suspect it's been longer than that, whatever it is.”
Ah, so Joe had been worrying this like a dog would a bone. Kel knew he wasn't going to bluff his way out of this one. He sighed and took another drink.
“Call it a journey of self discovery, Joe.”
Joe waited patiently.
“You're insufferable,” he grumbled finally, rolling his eyes. “It was actually something Johnny said.”
Kel had not meant to eavesdrop when Dixie told her favorite paramedics the news of her engagement. But Johnny actually threw his arms around her, picked her up and twirled her. She swatted him playfully, her fiancé growled something and they all laughed.
“Seriously though Johnny,” she said through her radiant smile. “Thank you for what you said to me.”
Johnny nodded solemnly, exchanging a soft look with Roy.
“We owe you one,” Pete Malloy said. “Both of you.”
Kel didn't hear exactly what was said after, but Dixie and Pete left, as she was off duty, and Roy indicated the men's room. Curiosity won over Kel's better instincts and he casually approached the base station where Johnny was double checking their supplies. After a moment of small talk, Kel plunged in.
“Do you mind my asking what it was you said to Dix?”
Johnny raised his chin in his usual defiant manner, but answered calmly with gentle understanding in his eyes, “I told her she deserves to be happy.”
Roy appeared at that moment and took an instinctively protective stance behind Johnny’s shoulder. Johnny turned slightly and glanced at his partner.
“We all do, Doc,” Roy said, his eyes glinting briefly with pain. “We better get going, Junior.”
Johnny smiled encouragingly and patted Kel on his shoulder, an unusual move for the man, and followed Roy down the hall.
“You know Kel,” Joe interrupted his story, “someone ought to tell Johnny the same thing.”
“Mmph,” Kel replied. “I don't think he thinks he deserves it.”
“Let's tackle that problem later, Kel.”
Sighing, he complied.
I AM happy. Kel thought to himself. Why would Johnny think I'm not?
He stewed over the interaction for weeks. Then the question of why he was bothered so much by Johnny's comment. Finally, after months of fretting, Kel, who was so talented with physical health, finally realized that it bothered him because he was not happy.
That realization shook him thoroughly. So much so, that he scheduled a consultation with a colleague, Dr Karen Stone. She was his age, happily married with six kids, and bucked the societal norm by continuing with her career on a part time basis. She had a no nonsense grandmotherly air that both soothed and irritated Kel.
“So,” she said after he had given her a summary of events. “Someone-”
“Johnny.” Kel interrupted.
“So Johnny repeated a bit of advice he gave to Miss McCall, and that made you eventually realize that you are not happy.”
“Yes,” Kel replied shortly.
“He must mean a lot to you.”
“Well, yes. He's one of my paramedics.”
She raised an eyebrow. “Yours?”
“You know I'm head-”
“I am aware of your credentials, Doctor Brackett,” She cut him off tartly. “I am also aware that something a mere employee said would not inspire such turmoil within you.”
Kel huffed and they sat in silence for a while.
“I respect Johnny immensely, what he and his partner do is extraordinary. Not everyone has that kind of strength.”
Dr. Strong didn't respond, and silence descended again.
“I guess you're right. Johnny and Roy are very important to me, and their opinion, their good opinion means a great deal.”
“There now. Was that so hard?” She smiled.
Kel glowered.
“What is happiness to you, Kel?”
“I don't know. Most of the people around me have found it in others.”
“That sounds like a good place to start.”
Kel wasn't much for the singles scene, having been focused solely on school and work for so long. He had a friend about an hour down the coast that he would take to dinner from time to time, and she would cook him breakfast. They had a firm understanding that it was nothing more than that.
But, he decided, while blowing off steam occasionally was nice, it did not solve the immediate need. So he took a deep breath and started hitting upscale bars and clubs. He had some success in finding company for the evening and even a few dates, but nothing lasting ever came of them.
When friends would offer to set him up with someone, he agreed, but again, had little long term success. He found, however, that he enjoyed meeting the variety of people he found on his journey, and became a better doctor because of it.
After several months of searching, he thought back to his early college days and a roommate he had for a semester. They had experimented sexually a bit together, but he disappeared without a trace and no one seemed to want to talk about him. Kel often wondered where he was now and if he was safe.
He briefly considered going out of town to a discreet gay club, but after further reflection, and discussion with Dr. Strong, he realized that fond memories aside, he was not attracted to men.
She did encourage him to seek out his former roommate in order to set his mind at ease regarding his welfare. When he found him, Kel had his eyes opened to many things, and threw himself wholeheartedly into helping his old friend and the organization he created.
He gradually realized that he was content, that his work and the challenges he faced made him happy. He also acknowledged and was proud of the personal growth he had achieved.
He still saw Dr Strong periodically, finding that having a sounding board was very beneficial to him. She also lent her expertise to his various projects, and on the day she asked, he was able to answer honestly.
“Yes, Doctor. I am happy.”
“There you have it Joe,” Kel finally concluded. “I guess you could say I've chosen to be married to my work, because I love what I do, and the people I meet along the way. If someone comes along, great, but I'm happy nonetheless. I'll also be happy to spoil my godchildren rotten, provided you and Bobbie give me any.”
“Well,” Joe said, turning faintly pink. “About that…”
