Happy WBW! What are holidays like in your world? Are they religious? Political? Historical? Seasonal? How do your characters feel about certain ones? How are they celebrated?

I only have one holiday planned out for Serenity: Heartwarmer Days, or Deep Winter Gift Giving.

It's celebreated on the 45th to 60th days of Deep Winter by the people of Cerradia (the MC's hometown).

Each day during the holiday, a person picks someone to give gifts to: be it family, a friend, a coworker, etc. Usually, a group of people coordinate to all give gifts on the same day. For example:

Rueben's parents pick the 48th day of Deep Winter to both give him his gifts. 

On the 60th day of Deep Winter, everyone gives one final gift to the Church to be given to Sayess, the Goddess of Dependability. Then they meet with their friends and family to have a big dinner and talk about the things they did that year. 

At midnight, Riedon hosts a fireworks show out of the Church. The fireworks are magical and pose no fire threat to The Wilds around Cerradia.

Happy Wednesday Ask-A-Thon from the @ask-a-thon team! Here's your question for today:

Do you often foreshadow things? What's your favorite example of foreshadowing you've included in a work and why is it your favorite?

I don't do it on purpose, I don't think.

But in Serenity, it's sort of foreshadowed that Lorne, the king, is summoning demons into the city. He's super shady until it's revealed that, yup, it was him summoning them.

And then Avery gets arrested for interfering lol

Happy (slightly late) Wednesday Ask-A-Thon from the @ask-a-thon team!

It's relatively common for writers to give aspects of themself to their characters or story. Have you done this? If not, why haven't you / what have you done to prevent this, if anything? If so, give an example (if you want to!)

Rueben, the MC of Serenity, is super anxious and has anxious ticks, like how I chew my nails.

He pulled at the strings which kept his gloves laced—a nervous tick to distract his anxious mind.

Happy Wednesday! Thank you for following us (@ask-a-thon) from the previous blog, or finding us in general! As you write horror and dark-fantasy, I have special questions for you today! [What is your favorite part about writing horror and dark fantasy? Have you gotten any push back because of the genres you write in? Do you have any advice for baby dark fantasy writers specifically?]

What is your favorite part about writing horror and dark fantasy?

My favorite part is I get to tell stories with darker themes. They don't have to be happily ever after, they can just be after.

Have you gotten any push back because of the genres you write in?

I haven't! I've heard some literary agents don't like books that start with violence/gore like Serenity does, but those aren't the agents I'll be querying anyway.

Do you have any advice for baby dark fantasy writers specifically?

Do your research. If you're going to touch dark topics, you need to handle them delicately. Use sensitivity readers!

Happy WBW! In honor of Idalia and her looming approach on the SouthEast US, what is the most dangerous natural threat to your world?

Serenity is based in a fictional world with natural disasters just like our world. None of them are any more dangerous than the rest, but there is a permanent tornado that has made the area it trashes unlivable. It's a dragon's source, Misty, and it's where she was created from.

Happy WBW! 🦄 - Does your world have magical beasts? If so, which ones and how many? Have any been domesticated?

I have a whole list of uncommon beasties, some are magic and some aren't. My favorite are the serixes, because they're skeletal elk. Just creepy things.

The serixes, kyches, kytar, catoes, and vepiots all make an appearance in Serenity. I mention the small forest deer, but none show up
