Before anyone says that the things Snow does are unrealistic and petty, I want to remind people of the U.S. government’s current “leadership” and how they spend their free time whilst being in power.

Actually sick to think about an AU where “everything turned out alright” for Haymitch because what does that even look like?

His family not being murdered? His girl living? Would that have pacified him?

If snow let him have his family, and his girl, and essentially a decent life after his games (he never would’ve), would that have kept Haymitch in line?

Would he have discarded the whole idea of rebellion? The idea of “giving people just enough…just enough to keep them in line.”

That’s a huge question that comes up for me when I think about the original trilogy, and now with SotR.

I optimistically still think Haymitch specifically would’ve kept ‘fighting’ (especially with Lenore Dove by his side), but it just begs the question to me.

If we adjusted the factors of this equation, what would the end result be?

Before SotR:

1. “Catching Fire” AND “The Hunger Games” (this is my ranking so I can list two in one spot as a tie lol)

After SotR:

Literally the same except it’s now a three-way first place tie between CF, THG, and SotR.

The fact that I already had an au where Haymitch’s love somehow survived/didn’t die,

Lmao I knew I’d be distraught

I’m like going to remake that au extra hard because WDYM SHE WAS POISONED?? She never ate it!! Haymitch noticed it early enough and she never put them in her mouth!!

They tossed the gum drops, and ran away together!! Or Lenore Dove faked her death and lived out in the house by the lake!! Haymitch was able to survive and bear it anyway, the story still in tact!!

How can I sleep comfortably tonight after reading the last chapter and epilogue of SotR??? HOW???

The epilogue barely gives enough comfort unless you believe in an afterlife like 😭😭😭

I know it’s supposed to leave us with a sense of catharsis, that he can rest now. But still. He tangibly has no one to hold and be held by at night. I’m gonna have to delude myself into thinking she survived and is physically with him. My heart can’t take it.

Yes, I do think the Lenore Dove ghost thing in the epilogue absolutely is a reflection of Haymitch’s mental health rather than a concrete spiritual thing, but I do quite like the idea that she did “grow old with him.” It broke my heart to read, but I like the thought that she stuck with him, and that they will be reunited again. That they never really parted.
