One of the things all four victors of District 12 have in common is that all of them stayed with a dying tribute so that theirs passing could be at least peaceful.
Lucy Gray held Jessup as he died.
Haymitch held Maysilee as she died.
Katniss held Rue as she died
And Peeta held the girl Morphling as she died.

The Hunger Games Books
• Katniss is described as having dark hair, gray eyes, and olive skin (although her mother and sister are pale, blue-eyed, and blonde)
• Peeta is taller than Katniss??? (which isn’t better, Josh Hutcherson is a 5’5 king which really added to Peeta’s Movie Character)
• Haymitch is from the Seam, so he didn’t have blond hair or blue eyes
• Madge exists (and the mockingjay pin is hers that she gives to Katniss)
• Katniss gets blasted deaf in her left ear (although they quickly fix it in the Capitol)
• Peeta gets cut in the leg, and then the mutts maul it, which is the reason why he gets it amputated and gets the prosthetic leg
• Prim has a goat (I think her name was Lady?) as well as Buttercup the cat, which Katniss tells a story about after Peeta asked her to tell him a story
• Katniss attacks Peeta after he confesses about the crush during the interview, and she causes his hands to bleed
• Cato begs Clove to stay with him as she died (fuck Cato x Glimmer)
• The mutts were designed to look like the tributes (ex: one with blond fur and green eyes for Glimmer)
• Peeta has two fucking older brothers and they both watched him get picked for the Hunger Games like “damn bro that shit sucks” which is in complete contrast to Katniss and Prim
• Katniss waits the WHOLE NIGHT before mercy-killing Cato, she just let him be eaten alive for a couple hours
• We get to read about Haymitch’s Quarter Quell!!!!
• Katniss sees Finnick doing mouth-to-mouth on Peeta after his heart stops and basically thinks “Damn, Finnick, even for you this is wild”
• Her & Finnick trying to scare Peeta when he wakes up when they were all on the beach
• Katniss was ready to kill Peeta with a syringe to protect him after she got lifted out of the arena (she picks it up in the movie but it’s not really clear what her actual intentions were)
• Katniss’ prep team being chained on the wall of a room (I’m pretty sure it was in District 13 or something) just completely fucking naked???
• She fucking sucked at everything Plutarch asked her to do for the propos
To be fair, I still like the movies, but these are just some of the many differences

Do you have fanart for Haymitch in 50th Games?
Have done one drawing of Haymitch during the 50th game, but I can draw more of him, because I don’t draw him enough.
So have this sketch of him and Maysilee

I love the Hunger Games and I have shit to say!
So, Madge gives Katniss the mockingjay pin to remind her of her district which is very cool in the grand scheme of things for a few reasons.
One, upon introducing Madge as a character, Katniss says she doesn't think Madge considers her a friend, but then basically describes what a friend is. This tells me that Katniss doesn't really see herself as likeable and she's OK with that. Like, 'yeah this girl who sits with me at school everyday and talks to me when I sell her dad strawberries isn't my friend, I don't have friends'. I don't think Katniss is particularly upset about not having friends, but it makes it all the more impactful when Madge gives her the pin because it would have been a surprise to Katniss that Madge valued her so highly. Though she probably just saw it as pity since at that point Katniss was fully convinced she wouldn't survive and also thought everyone else was betting on her death as well.
The second reason being that I believe the pin originally belonged to Haymitch's district partner (though, he would have had three since obviously he partook in the Quarter Quell that required four tributes from each district). Maysilee Donner was an ally of Haymitch, and he ended up having to watch her die having arrived just too late to save her. The ties the symbol has to Haymitch is really symbolic to me because of all the parallels between him and Katniss, and I think part of the reason why Haymitch grew so fond of Katniss in the end was because she reminded him of Maysilee, so he wished to save Katniss in return for being unable to save Maysilee. For that reason, I think it's sweet that Katniss bears a symbol that ties her back to Maysilee.
Finally, the fact that it became the symbol of the revolution. Its cool because the mockingjays are named in such a way because they basically make a mockery of the Capitol's failed attempt at spying on the districts, and ended up being more useful to the districts in the end, shown by how Rue uses them to communicate in District 11 and in the arena. Using a mockingjay as an anti-Capitol symbol just rubs it in their faces more that they failed to control the districts. Additionally, the fact that the pin didn't even originally belong to Katniss also represents how Katniss is an unwilling leader. The revolution she heads is representative of the people, of her people. It isn't, and never was, individual to her. The historical significance of the badge as well as the fact that it was a gift makes it all the more significant and special as a revolutionary symbol, because I think it properly distinguishes what Katniss represents and who she's fighting for.

Moments in the Hunger Games that Dr. Gaul would hate
Dr. Gaul says that humans are naturally violent, and to prove her wrong, here are moments in the Hunger Games that show that they aren't.
-Lucy Gray comforting Jessup when he wasn't feeling well
-Lucy Gray crying and mourning when Dill died (Wovey in the book)
-Lucy Gray making sure Jessup ate despite her having the advantage if he didn't eat
-The first thing Lucy Gray doing in the arena was look for Jessup and run away with him so they could both have a chance at surviving, despite all the murder and chaos happening around them
-Lucy Gray comforting Jessup as he was dying
-Lucy Gray in general
-Jessup protecting Lucy Gray from the bats (rabid raccoons in the book)
-Reaper giving Lamina cloth and Lamina giving him food. Then Coral, Mizzen, and Tanner came and she warned him (in the book)
-Reaper collecting the bodies of the fallen tributes and covering them with the flag to give them proper respects
-Reaper warning Wovey when she was walking to the snakes
-Lamina killing Marcus. Ik it was still murder, but it was a mercy kill. She even comforted him before and stared at his body and curled up into the fetal position after
-Lamima has a lot of empathy in general and I love her so much and she's litterally just walking proof of Dr. Gaul's theory being wrong. Her name is litterally animal spelled backwards, which is what Dr. Gaul belived the tributes were. Violent animals
-Bobbin letting Wovey sleep on his shoulder
Tumblr media
-In the walk to the cart, Bobbin was holding Wovey's hand
-Lucy Gray letting Wovey hold her hand before the games
-Treech protecting Lamina when Brandy was killed from the bullet
-Reaper going out of his way to protect Dill. I could make an entire post on this alone. But like, in every scene with them together, he's always looking out for Dill. Even when he jumped at his Mentor, he was looking at Dill before to see how she was doing. Dill's death is what made him want to honor the other tributes deaths. I can only imagine how that made their friends and families feel at home, to see the person they loved getting the respect they could in such violent games
-During the bombing, Marcus ran back to go get Lucy Gray despite thst fact that his chances of dying there were very high
-Ik he wasn't part of the games, but Sejanus going to spread bread around Marcus's dead body (I love Sejanus sm and I better not see y'all thirst over Snow anymore)
-In the book, there was no bloodbath scene. Most tributes ran straight for the tunnels, while Coral, Tanner, and Reaper went to get weapons, but even Coral, who was known for being violent, ran. Only Reaper stayed
-Reaper apologizing for having to kill the tributes the night before, and promising to honor them
-In the book, Teslee was running from the snakes and Lucy Gray came out of the tunnels singing so the snakes would be distracted so Teslee would have time to escape
-Screaming and crying and throwing up because Reaper killed Teslee but brought her body over to the other bodies because it's really all he could give her
-In the book, Lucy Gray and Reaper were the last ones left, and they procrastinated on killing each other. Lucy Gray killed him by getting him to drink poisoned water, not by any violence. She even closed his eyes when she realized he had died.
This was just the 10th Hunger Games. Damn. Imma go on to the other ones now
-Instead of of breaking their alliance by killing each other, Maysilee just left Haymitch saying that she didn't want it to come down to the two of them
-Haymitch staying with Maysilee as she died
-When Annie's district partner died, she gained serious PTSD, which should be proof enough that naturally, HUMANS DONT LIKE VIOLENCE
-Katniss volunteering to protect Prim
-Thresh smiling at Rue when she managed to steal the knife from Cato (this is so sweet to me, I love the District 11 kids sm)
Tumblr media
-Foxface not killing anyone (that Katniss knows of) and running away, proving thst people are just trying to survive and not be violent
-Foxface and Katniss bumping into each other but then running away. Especially Katniss, because she definitely had the advantage
-Peeta joining the careers to protect Katniss
-Peeta telling Katniss to run when the careers were hunting her
-This wasn't shown to the audience, but Katniss said that if her and Rue were the last 2 left, she'd let Rue win
-Katniss letting Rue cuddle under the sleeping bag so that she could stay warm
-Katniss mourning the death of Rue by leaving flowers over her body and then giving respects to District 11. She even cried and threw her spear when Rue died
-Clove and Cato's entire friendship (also, Clove smiling at Cato while they were on the plane)
-Thresh killing Clove purely because of what he thought she did to Rue, implying that he wanted to protect Rue. (I like to believe that he didn't make an alliance with Rue the dame reason Katniss didn't make an alliance with Peeta in the beginning; he didn't want it to come down to the two of them). Despite that, he was still heartbroken when she died
-Thresh sparing Katniss's life because she was friends with and protected Rue
-Clove calling for Cato when Thresh was threatening her, and Cato coming to help (in the book)
-Cato crying and begging Clove to get up when she was dying
-Katniss mercy killing Cato despite everything (in the movie)
-Katniss and Peeta not wanting to kill each other and deciding to eat the berries together instead
75th Hunger Games
Yes, ik the rebellion. But I'm still counting it.
-Peeta volunteering to avoid having Haymitch go to the games
-Mags volunteering for Annie
-The female morphling (who I headcanoned as her name being Chassis) sacrificing herself to save Peeta
-Peeta staying to comfort Chassis and talking about how pretty the sky was
-Chassis and Autus (male morphling) teaching Katniss how to camouflage, despite her not knowing about the rebellion, and for all they know, she could try and kill them. But they still wanted to save everyone, so they kept Katniss alive
-MAGS. Mags is the best
-Finnick staying with and protecting Mags despite her chances of surviving being very low
-Katniss keeping Finnick alive, despite not knowing about the rebellion
-Peeta staying to comfort Katniss and Finnick during the jabberjay attacks

SECOND QUARTER QUELL II UPRISING AU
Ok, look. I’m obsessed with Second Quarter Quell generation and I have A LOT of head canons about them. And sometimes these head canons contradict each other, lol. Previously I showed you some of my illustrations about SQQ generation but it was always one particular AU (where they all are kinda friends/classmates?). And I think it’s time to show you another one that I also like. This is AU (or “head canon” since we don’t really know what is real and what is not) where all of them were part of revolutionary movement before the 50th Hunger Games. Some things are the same in both universes (Mr. Hawthorne and Mrs.Mellark are best friends in both, haha), some are completely different (Mr.Mellark and Mrs.Mellark were not in love in “uprising au” and had to marry for the sake of revolution after Mr.M/Mr.E partnership was broken, oh oh, that was super dramatic!). But they look pretty much the same in every AU I have in my head haha. So here are quick portraits of SQQ gen characters and their confident files from D13 before the 50th Hunger Games reaping day (everything went wrong after that, huh).
About Donner sisters. Peeta said that Mr.Mellark described them as “twins or something” and I interpreted this “something” as that they were not identical twins. Katniss was amazed by young Mrs.Undersee and Madge’s similarity but she didn’t have this feeling about Maysilee. So I think they looked like sisters but not super similar to each other. I mean, I’m a mother of identical twins, I know what I’m talking about lol.
These portraits are not perfect and were done quickly but I really tried 😅. Funny fact: overall I have more clear vision of SQQ characters than THG characters, haha (especially young Haymitch, Mr.Everdeen, Hazelle and Mrs.Mellark). Oh, and you have no idea how much time I’ve spent on these files lol. I don’t even know WHY I did it, because obviously no one cares, but this idea lived in my head for far too long. Ugh, I’m finally free of it. And now I need to return to my work and also main series uffffffff.
P.S. “agent Fox” is Haymitch’s girl, but I have no decent head canon for her
P.P.S. I don’t mention any names because I try not to be too attached to particular names for these characters (who knows maybe one day Suzanne will reveal some information and I don’t want to be upset lol)

For all the people clamoring for a book/movie/prequel about Haymitch's Games, why is there virtually ZERO fanart of the 2nd Quarter Quell? Young Haymitch who was canonically a baddie? Maysilee Donner, the OG owner of the Mockingjay pin whose death Katniss explicitly compares to Rue's? Where y'all at?
Suzanne dedicates 3-4 pages in ch 14 of CF to describing Haymitch's Games. We know what the arena was like, how most of the tributes died (bloodbath killed 18, volcanic eruption killed 12), we know how Haymitch outlasted 47 other tributes, we know how he won and why the Capitol was unhappy with his victory.
PLEASE the fact that the arena was designed to look picturesque and enticing but every temptation, from the flowers and fruit, to the butterflies and even the water itself, was toxic like some kind of twisted Garden of Eden???? Gotta hand it to the Gamemakers, that's so scrumptiously evil!
Also, I'm sorry to bring this back to my girlie Maysilee, but the fact that she wasn't killed by another tribute but by flamingo mutts minutes after she broke off her alliance with Haymitch and just as soon as he figured out the force field... Ohhh the Gamemakers did her so dirty!
Honestly, for a character with connections to many established characters in the trilogy, (she was Madge's aunt, Katniss's mom's best friend, AND Haymitch's ally) and who is the originator of an object which was both a testament to the intergenerational dynamics in the series and whose symbolic significance is central to the entire HG franchise, we know very little about Maysilee.
Maysilee's family ran a sweet shop, she owned a pet canary (a songbird used to detect poisonous gas in coal mines) which was bequeathed to Katniss's mother after her death, and she had a twin sister who eventually married the Mayor but suffers from chronic pain, presumably because she remains devastated by her sister's death.
These details establish Maysilee as someone distinctly of the well-off merchant class of D12, and they evoke notions of frivolity, excess, and indulgence. Arguably so does the pin which is described as a family heirloom made of solid gold in the book. And yet, these details also speak to the simple joys in life that should be luxuriated.
Katniss's mother receiving the songbird foreshadows her falling in love with Katniss's father as well as his eventual death in the coal mines. Similar to the cakes in the Mellarks' bakery that Prim so admired, sweets represent joy, beauty, and pleasure, even if rare and fleeting.
Candy as both a source of temptation and pleasure, the canary as both a melodious songbird and detector of poison, plus the fact that the 2nd QQ arena was a poisonous paradise, I feel like these dualities had to be intentional! Maysilee's weapon of choice was poisonous darts. She was both beautiful and lethal.
I would like to imagine that Maysilee had something of a rebellious streak as the original owner of the Mockingjay pin. I would like to imagine that she probably had some important things to say given that the last thing the Gamemakers did to her was rob her of her voice.
Maysilee stuck her neck out for Haymitch and rescued him from a Career tribute before their alliance was formed. I would also like to imagine that, even though she died in the arena, her legacy lives on in the little and big acts of defiance exhibited by the other characters around her.
Her spirit lives on in Katniss's mom who moved from the merchant sector to the Seam to be with Katniss's father. In Madge who brings Gale her mother's medicine after he's whipped for hunting illegally. In Haymitch who becomes a key figure in the rebellion. And obviously in Katniss who risks her life for Prim, Rue, and Peeta.
We're all familiar with the origin story of the Mockingjay as a crossbreed between the mockingbird and a Capitol muttation—the Jabberjay which was intended to gather rebel intelligence but backfired. The Mockingjay thrived outside of the Capitol's control and thus became a symbol of anti-Capitol resistance.
It's called a MOCKINGjay because it made a mockery of the Capitol's failings. Sometimes mockingbirds are called nightingales but Suzanne intentionally used the former in the portmanteau of her fictional bird species because she literally spells things out with her naming conventions!
Thus, any character who acts in defiance of the Capitol's expectations or designs is akin to a Mockingjay. It's Haymitch avoiding other tributes as much as possible and only winning by exploiting the arena's forcefield—the D1 girl's axe backfires, and she's taken out by her own weapon. It's Katniss holding out the berries and refusing to win on the Gamemakers' terms, forcing their hand to let both her and Peeta live. It's Reaper using the Capitol flag for his makeshift morgue.
It's all the tributes who gave solace, comfort, dignity, and respect to other tributes in their deaths (this happens A LOT but notice that all the D12 Victors do this). It's Thresh sparing Katniss for taking care of Rue. It's Peeta playing with the intent of helping Katniss win. It's Mags volunteering for Annie, it's Finnick resuscitating Peeta, etc. It's anyone risking their life or livelihood for someone else's sake. It's care, compassion, and even love persisting in the most brutal of circumstances.
For me, taking risks to care for others is what flies in the face of the Capitol ideology that people are inherently prone to war, violence, and destruction. This is especially true when it happens in the Games which are premised upon an "every man for himself" and "kill or be killed" mentality.
For me, taking risks to care for other people is the power of the Mockingjay symbol. It's also the meaning of the Hanging Tree song; risking everything for the chance of love and true freedom, even unto death. And that kind of hope is what rebellions are built on.
I just think that the Mockingjay pin means so much!!! I didn't even mention how, when Katniss pins it on her green shirt, she associates it with the freedom of being in the woods. It reminds her of her father whose singing voice was so beautiful that the mockingjays stopped to listen. The pin grounds her and makes her feel like she's taking a piece of home, a piece of her father into the arena.
Also, the pin is what makes Rue want to trust Katniss! For Rue, music is the one thing she can't live without, and back in D11 she sings to mockingjays to communicate that the working day is done. Katniss offers to give the pin to Rue, but Rue says she likes seeing it on Katniss better.
Also, let's not forget that the pin is a parting gift from Madge, Katniss's friend who truly cherishes her. As with the crowd who offers her the three fingered salute which she attributes to D12's respect for her father or Prim's loveableness, Katniss has difficulty recognizing that people like Madge already respect, admire, and care for her in her own right for her tenacity and bravery.
Madge is very insistent about informing Katniss that she's allowed a district token and implores her to wear the pin into the arena. This is likely a way of honoring her aunt who presumably also wore the pin as her district token. If so, then it's likely that Haymitch would have recognized the pin which may have given him an extra push to do his utmost to save Katniss because it reminded him of the girl he couldn't save.
Anyway, I feel like the intricacies of the mockingjay pin, its original owner, and its connection to the 2nd QQ are a little underappreciated. Like, this isn't even getting into the everlark parallels that write themselves... Please, Haymitch and Maysilee paved the way. They were the blueprint.
Personally, although I'm just as intrigued about the 2nd QQ as the rest of y'all, I'm fine with it being left up to the readers' imagination. There have been some great fan interpretations both in the form of fanfiction as well as the fan film by mainstay pro: https://youtu.be/7mUjssn86h4?si=PNH1rblPBp1Us5pg
I just find it kind of strange that, given how much interest there seems to be around Haymitch's Games, there isn't that much fan content, discussion, or analyses about them. Please feel free to contribute any thoughts, corrections, or reactions to this post!

Things that I personally can’t get over The Hunger Games movies leaving out:
The entire evolution of Katniss’s relationship with her prep team and their mistreatment in District 13
Haymitch’s backstory and how he won his games
Peeta losing his leg in his first games and Katniss losing hearing in one ear
Johanna and Katniss’s bonding in District 13
The explanation that Katniss and Gale’s fathers died in the same mining explosion and that they met because they were two starving kids trying to feed their families
Madge’s entire character, storyline, and connection to Maysilee Donner and the mockingjay pin
The racial and class divide in District 12

The hunger games were created to show what a "beast" humanity is, to show that, in our most desperate circumstances, we will put our survival above all else.
So, every time a tribute decides to put their own survival at risk for someone else's, it's a form of rebellion against the games.
And we see it constantly during the games:
Lamina mercy killing Marcus and putting herself at risk because no one deserves that kind of agony, Reaper making sure the tributes get some dignity in theirs deaths and Lucy Gray staying out in the open with Jessup as he dies.
It's Haymitch running towards Maysilee to save her regardless of the fact that theirs alliance is broken and it could be a trap and staying with her as she died.
And it's especially there in the 74th hunger games. It start with Katniss volunteering for Prim but it's not just her, she is the first spark but she is not the only one in the game to do it.
It's Rue deciding to heal Katniss when that couldn't be that safe for her on the ground, it's Peeta, who understands what the hunger games are for since the beginning and decided to put all of his skill in favor of Katniss's survival, not his. It's Thresh too, sparing Katniss, a very dangerous opponent for Rue.

thinking about madge undersee and the mockingjay pin, and how her character had the opportunity to be so much MORE like the history of mockingjays in general being rebellious, her aunt dying in the arena w haymitch, her dad being the mayor with access to info from other districts, the fact that she INSISTED katniss take the pin,,,,, idk i think she could've been so much if she had the time

back on my maysilee and mockingjay pin bullshit
the fact that maysilee is more important to the mockingjay pin’s story than madge and yet madge gets more of the attention that she does.
let me be clear, madge has barely broken containment, if at all. sometimes I’ll talk about her and a lot of people still won’t know who she is. but I’ve seen a lot more people know who she is than I have seen people who know maysilee.
don’t misunderstand me, I love madge. adore her. you go you funky little lesbian. and she undoubtedly plays an important part in the mockingjay pin’s story, but… the pin being maysilee’s is more important to the story over all.
let me explain. the reason I say this is because the emotional weight the mockingjay pin carries could still be maintained without madge being present, so long as someone the person who gave katniss the pin was someone who knew maysilee (or is otherwise connected to her like madge).
I’ve considered different ways of incorporating more of the mockingjay pin’s symbolism into the movies without changing too much. ideally, of course, it would happen just as it does in the books. if it didn’t however, I think katniss’ mother could’ve given her the pin and the emotional weight would’ve been maintained. she knew maysilee, and the connection between katniss and haymitch to maysilee, through the pin, would be maintained.
on one hand I don’t want people ruining her, but on the other DAMNIT I WANT MORE PEOPLE TO TALK ABOUT MAYSILEE WITH. I DON’T CARE HOW BRIEFLY SHE APPEARS. THE SYMBOL OF THE ENTIRE SERIES BELONGED TO HER. SHE’S AN IMPORTANT CHARACTER DAMNIT. IT ISN’T JUST MY AUTISM.
sorry got a bit intense there for a moment. maysilee enjoyers I hope you have a good day everyday. please post your thoughts about her. I would love to hear them.

The worst type of hate ppl have against TBOSAS is "we don't care about Snow we want Haymitch game"
I love my baby girl Haymitch and I would enjoy a book based on him and his game BUT we already know about them...? We had half a chapter in catching fire about every important moments of his game. Sorry but when people say this it just scream "I never read catching fire or I didn't payed enough attention while reading" just talk about Maysilee and see their reactions...they don't know her.
Suzanne only write when it seems important to the story, TBOSAS gave so much more depth to the Hunger Games trilogy, it was the perfect prequel. And people actually saying this and criticizing Suzanne artistic choice is so annoying.

Also aside from the fact that Prim being the one to give Katniss the mockingjay pin erases a lot of really interesting history and lore (like Katniss’s entire friendship with Madge, and the fact that it belonged to someone who was allies with Haymitch in his own games) it just……does not make any logical sense lmfao.
Like that pin is solid gold. There is absolutely NO WAY Katniss wouldn’t have sold it, priorly, to buy food or something. Definitely one of the worst changes that the movies made tbh.
