This is how you get me, I'm a sucker for costuming

since edwin is very closed off, except for when he’s with his best friend, charles, costume designer kelli dunsmore reflected his buttoned-up mentality through his bespoke suit, complete with bowtie and collar. edwin’s outfit, along with charles’ period garb, were designed to help them stand out more in modern day port townsend. “i knew edwin would, because no one dresses like that now,” says dunsmore.

dunsmore wanted everything about charles to feel “a little bit cool and underground,” from his union jack and the who bull’s-eye patches to his checkerboard pins. his little cross earring and chain on the outside of his shirt are also meant to be homages to the ’80s.

in the show, crystal’s hero color is purple, which you’ll notice in her velvet coat and long silk letterman jacket, which dunsmore thought of as a psychic cloak with hand-embroidered patches, including the wilting rose of england.

her brown trench coat represents an explosion of everything going on in her mind. dunsmore decided the scribbled words and drawings are a result of crystal writing all over it to express her inner turmoil. there are even lyrics on there from the song she’s listening to on the tube when she meets the dead boys.

david’s connection with crystal seeps into her wardrobe, too. since david wears a flower shirt, dunsmore’s team hand-painted flowers onto crystal’s black boots. and niko is wearing a dark sweater with flowers on it when we first meet her, as an homage to crystal. the costume department also drew the same rune pattern the dead boys use to exorcise david in episode 1 onto crystal’s trench coat and on the tab of her wool bomber jacket. “so she’s always got some sort of protection,” says dunmore.

every color niko wears is inspired by what’s happening in that episode, from the green post-sprite exodus to blue when she’s feeling sad. niko only wears a white look, with nods to her japanese heritage, in the finale as a reset. the charms on her obi belt represent the colors she’s worn all season.

night nurse is someone who’s in control all the time and likes things to be in their proper place. dunsmore looked to vivienne westwood for inspiration, since everything in night nurse’s world is a bit exaggerated. (by the way, niko’s orange monochromatic look is a nod to her scenes with night nurse and night nurse’s red hair.)

since david is a demon, he finds a london boy that looks cool enough for crystal to find attractive. that meant dunsmore dressing him in a shearling jacket you’d find in “all the guy ritchie movies,” black pants and creeper shoes. the costumer’s mood board for “david the d” featured radiohead and amy winehouse and her husband blake, who often wore hats similar to the one you see david wearing in the show.

pay close attention to monty’s leather jacket and you just might spot an inlaid crow feather or two.

it’s not only esther who wears clothes with a gilt, old-gold color — cat king and night nurse also do as a nod to their villainy. (esther and cat king also have similar fur coats.) amidst her beauty, dunsmore wanted esther to be a little rough around the edges. she wears a cuff around her hand that’s adorned with a snake and a ring with teeth all around it to represent the teeth she’s collecting from all the little girls. her eye necklace is meant to be her witch pendant.

mischievous as ever, cat king has (cat) eyes everywhere and is aware of edwin’s affection for charles. so he wears charles’ socks the first time he meets edwin.

Okay so an idea popped into my head, hear me out

Monty was only recently turned human, we know that in the show he knows how to read and write. What if that was the effect of a spell that Esther cast on him to make seducing Edwin easier.

So after Esther is presumably killed the spell would wear off and Monty would actually need to learn how to read and write. He knows the basics because of the short amount of time he was able to do all that.

He hides it from the rest of the agency because he doesn't want to seem like a burden. And when the agency finally finds out Monty had to learn from scratch they assist without being too overbearing.

Love how basically the first thing they establish in Dead Boy Detectives is basically "they're married, your honor."

Edwin: Husband, I'll need my purple arcane book.

Charles: Er...yeah...about that...I...uh...left it at home, dear.

Edwin: Charles! You have a backpack that can hold an infinite number of things!

Charles: Well how was I supposed to know we'd need that particular book, I mean do you want me carrying around the whole library for every case?!

Edwin, pinching the bridge of his nose: We simply do not have time for this argument again.

I think it's so interesting that when the Night Nurse goes through Charles' trauma, she does see him being attacked by the other boys, sees him running alone through the night, but she never sees him dying. That only comes later, when she is searching for love.

And there is no fear in that memory, even if there is pain, there is just Edwin and the light he is bringing, metaphorically and physically, into Charles' life, there is smiling and joking and listening to stories. There is Edwin.

So, yeah, I don't think dying was a bad experience for Charles. Not a good one, per se, but one that led to the best thing in his existence.

gotta hand it to charles for being so insane that edwin didn't even think that he could possibly be a hallucination or another hell trick, he was immediately like "of course, charles would come to hell for me. he's such an idiot. this is entirely in character."

Tighnari and Alhaitham are the two smartest, but they aren't academic rivals. Haitham is better at literature and social studies, while Tighnari is better at math and science. They tutor each other on their bad subjects.

Kaveh is the art kid, ofc. He loves drawing and painting. He once made a whole sturdy structure out of marshmallows and toothpicks. He draws Haitham the most, but claims he draws Cyno more.

Last is Cyno, he's sporty and a huge teachers pet. He has office duty and has a huge ego about it. He lets Kaveh get away with skipping, but annoys Haitham and Tighnari about being a second late.

Now dating time!

The first crush that ever happened in the group was Alhaitham getting a crush on Cyno in elementary school. He just thought Cyno was the prettiest in a cute elementary schooler way.

Og highschool couples were cynonari and kavetham. The couples would often go on double dates, one time Cyno and Kaveh ran off at a fair leaving Haitham and Tighnari behind. The two walked around holding hands and Haitham won Tighnari a huge fox plushie, but it was tOtAlLy PlAtOnIc

After a while communication happened and they all realized they liked each other.

Haitham and Tighnari constantly hold hands in the hallways. Tighnari is always nervous that someone's gonna just touch his tail, so Haitham is his shield.

Kaveh does Cyno's hair everyday before classes start. High pony with bangs, low pony, a messy bun. Kaveh is in love with Cyno's hair. But the one time it backfired was with pigtails. Cyno almost beat the shit outta Kaveh

Cyno drags Haitham everywhere because scary dog privilege. Haitham also just picks Cyno up at random times to annoy him. Cyno just wiggles like a feral cat, but after a while goes limp.

Kaveh loves to nap on Tighnari's tail. The blonde is absolutely obsessed with it. He'll put cute clips on it, he'll braid the longer parts, and it's just his comfort spot. He brushes Tighnari's tail to help calm himself.

Kaveh and Haitham go to the library all the time. Kaveh loves reading about ancient architecture, while Haitham grabs almost every book he can find on authors to quench his hyperfixation.

Cynonari go on ice cream dates. Cyno loves mint choco while Tighnari despises it with a passion. Tighnari always gets some "tropical fruit" like lychee or dragon fruit. Cyno is basic as hell, vanilla or mint choco.

Lastly they all always attend Cyno's games. For whatever sport he does, they're always the loudest fans. One time Kaveh almost physically fought a girl because she claimed to be Cyno's #1 fan (dramatic bitch)
