Okay I JUST realized I never posted these on here—- BUT BASICALLY, about a year and a half ago I started doing these experimental black hairstyle posts that were threads long on Twitter, to give artists a source of inspo for their black ocs whose hair they wanted to try something new with! There’s more to black hair than just the selected styles portrayed in media, and I thought it would be fun to show people how much texture, shape, fades, length, and style can be combined when drawing black hair—-cause it’s a kind of manipulation our hair can do irl! The OG thread from when I made these a year ago were lost with the hacking of my original Twitter account (@/bagels_donuts) but I’ve since reuploaded the whole thread to my new Twitter (@/ItsDonutsFR)! I hope artists on tumblr find these useful, sorry it took me so long to post them here😭🙏🏾 I’ll upload them all in parts!

Need to know how ya shade clothes—like blending it to look so smooth

UH I’m pretty rusty with rendering but let’s see what I remembered 😭

For the “smooth” feeling I think it has a lot to do with how I just go wild with mid-tones when rendering, here’s a small scale example but I just do this across the entire piece if you look closely

But flat colors are also important, if you aren’t happy with your flats, you’re not gonna be happy with your render

You need contrast in the values and saturation in the colors, mostly just to make the piece look “lively” and bad values or dull coloring can make the piece look muddy

To make the colors more “lively” at first I usually use bounce lighting like it’s supposed to work (like the blue shirt reflects blue light onto the dark suit) and then start putting it where I like (the random areas with blue bounce light in the shadowed and lighted areas)

It’s kinda hard to explain how I go about with (my incredibly inaccurate) bounce lighting, but for this case, since the shirt’s light blue was the most saturated and the suit’s dark blue was kinda dulled, I put the light blue all over the more dulled blue to make it more alive

I also sometimes just put random colors I think look nice, it mostly depending on how I feel tbh

Uhhhhhh I don’t rlly think about my process that deeply, it kinda just a bunch of habits I’ve gradually gained, so as cliche as it is the best advice I can give is to just try and draw what you imagine, and don’t be scared to experiment till you get it right 😭

This was asked a while ago but I’m slow and lazy 😭🙏

Uhhhhh so they’re story (Outlast Planet) is in a post apocalyptic setting (because of a illness called Death Staining) but they were always pretty mentally messed up because parental issues and stuff… the exacts aren’t important or defined story wise lol, but they were always really anti social and kinda… off putting

Without getting into too much detail (which would be like a entire Bible worth of lore) they just have a lot of trouble taking accountability and just running away from their issues or hoping they disappear

Which aren’t very good habits when you accidentally cause your popular and important coworker to die (Silver/Daniil)

But eventually the guilt eats them up enough and they tell their only friend, Snezhana (Daniil’s sister) that they y’know… accidentally killed him, but things lead to things, they get booted out into a wasteland basically where not enough people were left alive to keep the area functional and now it’s slowly rotting ruins.

Like a fuck ton of character development, trauma and healing later they become like this tho:
