Jean and Neil are both obsessed with Kevin, and both in a really complicated way, but it’s so wild to me how differently they view him, especially in regard to how much of his actions are viewed as cowardice versus bravery/recklessness.
Like Neil sees him in the aftermath of escaping the nest and goes “agh, pathetic man with a liquid spine”
And Jean loses his mind every time Kevin is on page because he’s taking so many insane risks and spiting Riko left and right - the contrast is just absolutely bonkers.

Since I finished tsc a few days ago it has been living in my head rent free. And there are definitely a lot of major plot and character points that are included in that, but also: Kevin Day and his history major.
Like we don’t really get to know much about it because neither Neil or Jean thought anything about it other than “this weirdo really likes history for some reason”, but I have so many questions about this.
He really, truly begged Riko, the primary source of misery in his life, to take this major with him, even though he had to know that it was never going to be something he used outside of the court since Ravens were, by design, never meant to have a future outside of Exy. How much did he have to love this thing that was just his in order for him to agree to do two people’s worth of work and to push for what he wanted enough for it to stick out so clearly in Jean’s memory? When and why did he learn to care so much about it?

Send help, or at least send tissues

thinking about how ramy says, “this is how the empire connects us,” in regards to opium and he’s so devastatingly right
but also:
ramy and robin find their lost languages in each other (cantonese is bold and sharp like ramy; bangla is sweet and soft like robin)
ramy and robin share cultural new years (chinese in jan/feb, bengali in april)
(while i’m not sure if these nicknames existed in the late 1830s) very common bengali endearments carry the same root word, pākhi, which means bird. bird, birdie.
and you will say – didn’t the empire start all this, too? didn’t the british take ramy and robin’s preferred languages away from them? didn’t they rip them from their homes where they would celebrate their new years? didn’t robin choose this name because the british wouldn’t let him have his chinese name?
the british started it, but they didn’t expect there to be this level of intimate solidarity. they wanted to pull the oppressed apart, pit them against each other, but the similarities are copious bc ramy and robin have much more in common with each other than they will ever with the empire
they take the cruelty, mould it into smth they can share and build together
the empire couldn’t have that. so they did what they knew best: they took them away from each other

The publishing industry is absolutely wild, because you can be at a press working on nothing but books about fighting racism and sexism and homophobia, and what you actually spend your whole day doing is fighting your authors and publishers about their own rampant racism and sexism and homophobia

Petition for writers to give us less “of course I’m good at fighting, I had four older brothers” and more “I had no siblings with which to model normal fighting behaviors, so I am not necessarily a bad fighter but I am wildly unpredictable and chaotic.” Some real life inspiration from people I know that you can draw on (I certainly will):
- My dad likes to tell this story about how he was once losing a bar fight. His best friend at the time knew he had to help out somehow, but he either never had siblings or got along with them fantastically, and had no idea what to do. So he just jumped on the back of the nearest guy hitting my father and PROCEEDED TO START BITING HIM, which is absolutely unhinged behavior and not something you would ever expect from your standard brawl, but my dad’s friend didn’t know this, and simply acted in the first way he could think to.
- Along those same lines, when my mom first started taking martial arts classes, the instructor was terrified of her because her immediate reactions to being attacked were never the same as the more seasoned students and seemed extremely counterintuitive most of the time.
-One of my childhood friends knew he could never outmatch anyone in a fight (he does have brothers, but they never fought), so the tactic he developed was simply to ragdoll at an unexpected moment to startle and confuse the person who might attack him, and also so he would be much harder to move.
feel free to add your own examples!

i'm seeing people losing hope for palestine i'm begging you seriously please don't. the death toll is high but there are still people alive, there are still journalists risking everything to make sure the world sees what is happening. please continue protesting if you have the option to, keep demanding for a ceasefire and keep talking about palestinians both alive and dead. you have to keep going until the very end or else you really did fail them.
