Part 1 of 2, an Alternate Take on my AU wherein there’s a different psycho and there are WAY more stakes.
Part two is already finished and written. It will be posted in a few days so that I may edit some final things.

almost done writing an alternate universe for my after dusk fic.
it features a different psycho instead of the one in the original version that i wrote.
i could post the first half of the AU right now, or i could wait until the whole thing is finished. it’s currently at 30k words so i would split it up in two parts. the first half right now, and the second half whenever i complete it.
hmm… conflicted. if anyone cares, let me know what i should do. it’ll be done super soon, either way. no long month waits. maybe like two weeks at most.

could you possibly do Jacob x Dylan? My multishipper brain has been thinking about nothing but them and the fics are very limited
I really like this ship! ^-^
Jacob x Dylan (The Quarry)
“Stupid, it’s stupid,” Jacob sniffled, throwing another rock forward into the quarry. He was so stupid. What did he think? That one more night would magically fix he and Emma’s relationship? God. He’s so dumb. So stupid. He should’ve never messed with the van.
“Hey.” A body dropped to sit beside him.
Jacob hurriedly wiped at his tears, ashamed of them as he looked over at Dylan. “H-hey.”
Dylan didn’t look at him, staring out at the island across the water. “You okay?”
Jacob followed his line of sight to the island, sniffling to himself before shrugging. “Not really. But I’ve gotta get over it, right? She clearly has.” Jacob’s nails dug into the boardwalk.
“That was shitty of her,” Dylan agreed. Jacob felt his shoulders relax, relieved that someone was on his side for the first time since all of this started. It’s been ‘good for Emma’ or ‘tough shit, Jacob’ since the breakup yesterday. Not once has anyone gone ‘are you okay?’.
Like sure… they broke up. Jacob had known it was coming. Everyone did.
But they didn’t need to rub it in his face.
“Yeah. It… uh, it was.” Jacob nodded. “It was shitty.”
He studied Dylan’s side profile for a moment, the warm yellow of the light above them making his eyes shine a little as he looked ahead of them.
“Why’d you come after me?” Jacob asked. He hears Dylan take in a deep, suffering breath, but his face is fairly blank when their eyes meet.
“I don’t think Kaitlyn and Ryan noticed I left. Too busy staring into each others eyes.” Dylan’s voice is soft, a hint of bitterness. Then he shakes his head. “I came after you because I… I guess I don’t get it, but… I get it. You know?”
Jacob frowns, but slowly nods. He… thinks he does.
“I thought he’d kiss me.” Dylan adds after a small pause in the air. “Maybe that’s like… selfish. But… for a moment there I thought he really liked me back.”
Jacob’s hand gently landed on Dylan’s forearm, giving a small squeeze. “I thought Emma would kiss me.” He isn’t saying it to bring the attention back to himself. He’s doing it to say ‘I see you, and I felt the same way’.
Dylan’s arm twitches underneath his hand, and Dylan looks over at him, their eyes connecting. A soft, tiny smile touches his lips, and Jacob can see the faint peeking of his dimple.
Dylan’s eyes dart around his face for a moment before whatever moment that had bloomed was broken by him clearing his throat and standing. A smile teased his lips again, more playful, more like the Dylan Jacob had come to know this summer.
“So, are we gonna sit here moping? Or are we gonna have fun for our last night?”
Jacob felt oddly… disappointed. But he nodded and stood, too, glancing around. “What do you want to do?”
“Well… are there any towels left? We could go swimming.”
“In our clothes?”
Dylan’s smile stretched, his head tilting a little. “Not necessarily.”
Jacob blinked for a moment — then his eyes widened and his cheeks pinkened. “Ooooh. Okay. Got it.” He turned to go look for the towels, ears incredibly focused on the sound of Dylan’s clothes shuffling as he took them off.
Was Dylan… flirting with him? He wondered this as he moved up the stairs, warm under his green sweater. Was he okay with Dylan flirting with him?
…yes, he found himself thinking. He was definitely okay with it.
The search for towels is fruitless, and he returns to find Dylan stripped down to his boxers, gazing at the water with a contemplative expression. “Hey, no towels.” He announced from a few feet away, and Dylan’s shoulders — were they always so broad and… grabbable? — jumped in surprise.
“Aw, shit. Guess we’ll have to dry off the old fashioned way, hmm?” Dylan waggled his brows playfully, and Jacob felt a smile spring to his lips and his eyes.
“Shake it out doggy style?” He joked. Where he knew Emma anyone else would’ve groaned and gagged at his joke, Dylan laughed brightly, nodding.
“Hell yeah! C’mon, get naked. I’m feeling all shy,” Dylan laughed, before turning and jumping down into the dark green water.
Jacob’s lips stayed in their upright position as he tossed his clothes off, setting his hat on top of them just as Dylan resurfaced, soaked hair fallen onto his forehead, water shining as it slid down his face.
“Hurry up, slowpoke!” Dylan called, splashing water near Jacob’s feet. Jacob laughed, shaking his head as he readied to jump in.
“Slowpoke, huh? Seems like someone’s never met Hurricane Jake,” His words make Dylan laugh again, splashing more water in his direction. Jacob’s body felt light as he ran forward, yelling out, “CANNONBALL!”
He resurfaces to see Dylan wading in front of him, wet hand pushing at the hair dropped on his face. “Excellent form,” He praised. Jacob swam closer as he replied.
“Thank you, I worked really hard on it.”
“I could tell.”
“Mm, could you?” Jacob hummed. Dylan’s smile was infectious.
“I could.” Dylan nodded, tilting his head at him for the second time. Jacob felt his eyes inexplicably drawn to Dylan’s neck, shiny and slick from the water, but he quickly tore away from it before he was noticed.
Jacob hesitated for a moment, studying Dylan’s face for a moment. He felt like he needed to do something, say something. But… what?
Dylan’s smile faded a little, and a small breath left him. “I’m sorry Emma broke up with you. Even if she told you it was a fling at the start, it… it became real for you, didn’t it?”
Jacob swallowed hard, suddenly finding the water more interesting to look at. “It did. But… she never felt the same way, I guess. Did she… even try to come after me?”
Dylan drew closer to him, and the movement drew Jacob’s eyes once more to his face. “She went after Abi. Nick went back to the lodge. Ryan and Kaitlyn…” He trailed off, then brushed past those two. “I didn’t want you to be alone, so… I came after you.”
Jacob expects a sharp sting at the news that Emma hadn’t even thought to come after him. Instead, he’s just glad she would be there for Abi. He sighed, and gave Dylan another, softer smile. “Thanks. I’m… glad it was you.”
He’s not sure what he means by that. But he doesn’t really care because all he can focus on is Dylan’s face, much closer than before. His lightly parted lips were a pale, pouty pink. His doe eyes were staring into his when Jacob looked to them, a gentle glint shining them softly.
“Me too.” Dylan’s voice was quiet, kind, breathy.
Jacob wanted to kiss him. Was that weird? Maybe. He and Dylan rarely talked during the summer. Then again, he’d been too focused on Emma. But…
Dylan came after him. Dylan understood what he was going through. Dylan made him smile and laugh. Dylan was…
Pretty.
Dylan was pretty.
Jacob took in a soft breath. “C-can I…?” Kiss you, he’s going to ask — but he’s interrupted by a loud scream filling the air. His head whips towards the woods — and he can see Dylan doing the same beside him.
Abi?
Jacob rushed to get out of the water. Dylan was close behind — and Jacob began to rush forward, only to pause, hand patting at his hip. The rotor arm.
“Shit.” He looked down at the water.
Dylan’s hand curled around his arm. “That was Abi, come on!” He insisted. Jacob hesitated again.
Then he screwed his eyes shut, and allowed Dylan to tug him away from the water. Away from the rotor arm.
Time to help Abi.
He’d think about how soft Dylan’s hand was later.

Dylan and Ryan meet in another universe.
Ohhh this flooded my mind with so many ideas. Here’s what I finally landed on, though. This is… a little out-there, but I hope it’s still enjoyable! ^-^
Dylan x Ryan AU Meet-Cute (The Quarry)
The mission was a success.
They’d made it. They really made it!
Ryan looked out the window of the spaceship, out at the wide open land of Mars. He admired the red sands, the heaping hills and mountains, the stars staring down, unobscured by any manmade pollution.
The first man-led mission to Mars, and Ryan was one of the pilots. He took in a slow, deep breath, a smile curling on his lips. He made it. He couldn’t wait to tell Sarah.
“Yo, Erzahler, hurry your ass up!” Ka yells over to him, and he sighed, shaking his head to clear it. Right. No more admiring from afar.
Time to explore.
He suits up, ignoring the childish arguing going on behind him as Ka and Custos bicker like siblings. He glanced over at Mountebank as she scoffs and rolls her eyes at the two, looking vaguely irritated.
His helmet clicks in place just as she notices his glance. “We’re literally making history, and they’re acting like five year olds.” She grumbled to him, locking her helmet in place, too.
Ryan huffed a quiet laugh shrugging back to her. He figured that they’d earned the right to be childish. It’d been a long few years on this journey to Mars, and they’d all grown increasingly irritated with each other. Now that they were here… it was a huge weight off their shoulders.
They didn’t bicker for long, and eventually the four, alongside Brinly, their botanist, opened up their ‘ship—standing along the edge line that would officially consider them the first humans to ever touch Mars. The first life forms.
Ka nudged Ryan. “You first, Captain.” She said, grinning brightly behind her helmet.
Ryan took in a deep, slow breath. Six years in space, without his sister, his grandparents. His friends. Six years. And it had all led to this.
He took his first step into the red sand, and then his second, and third. It wasn’t as cold as he thought it would be, the sun warming the planet from high in the sky.
Behind him, Custos and Ka were gathering their foraging equipment, and Mountebank was helping Brinly set up shop.
Ryan knelt down, taking a handful of sand, and letting it slowly slip from his fingers. He ached to take his suit off. He wanted to know what it felt like. Was it the same as Earth sand? Warmer? Coarser?
“Erzahler! You gonna help?” Brinly shouted over to him. Ryan stood up, admiring the stretching lands ahead of them one last time.
Then he went to help Briny and Mountebank.
Time to colonize Mars.
Or… try.
-
Ryan couldn’t sleep. He shifted in his cot for what felt like the twentieth time.
He wanted to explore. He didn’t want to just lay here in a new planet, wasting time to sleep.
So he huffed, sitting up and throwing his blanket off of him. He suited up, and stepped back out into the red landscape with an excited wakefulness.
He explored for a while, keeping track of the way back with a helpful bag of glow sticks. Courtesy of Custos, who, while they’d all rolled their eyes at first when he held the bag up—definitely had a good idea. It was dark out here.
And freezing.
The suit provided a good warmth, but it wouldn’t last. He was sure that he could only explore for a little while longer before needing to be headed back.
He found a nice, large hill, and climbed up the cold, thick sand. He laid down, admiring the wild stars above. They weren’t Earth’s stars, which was a strange thought to realize. He really was on another planet. Holy cow.
He’s so deep in admiring the stars that he doesn’t realize he isn’t alone anymore until a voice breaks the silence, one that wasn’t his own.
“Hello?”
Ryan’s eyes snapped to his left, scrambling back away from the tall figure standing near him. His eyes quickly crawled up legs, legs, and more legs, before reaching a torso—and finally, a face.
An oddly normal face.
Well… if you discounted the slightly too big eyes. And the barely visible fangs. And the faintly pointy ears. And the—okay, you get it. Point is, whatever the figure is—and it can’t be human, it can’t—has pale, white skin, and its face is so similar to a human’s. Only… off.
Like there was something… missing.
He felt a wicked sense of uncanny valley, all his memories of listening to podcasts about doppelgängers and skinwalkers screaming into his mind. He pushed himself upright, an alert in his suit telling him that he needed to slow his breathing or his oxygen levels would deplete too low to make it back to base.
The fact that it spoke English was… frightening. How did it know English?
“Hello?” It repeated.
Ryan stared for a moment. He blinked hard, but this wasn’t a dream.
“Hello.” He finally replied, voice barely audible in his panic.
It stood still for a long while. Then it said something that made Ryan… itch.
“My battery is low, and it’s getting dark.”
“What..?” Ryan felt chills crawl down his already frozen skin.
“What..?” The thing, alien?, mimicked.
“That’s the… the last thing the Opportunity drone sent to Earth.” Ryan stammered out. It—he? it was physically masculine—tilted its head at him.
“Opp-or-tune-it-ee.” A smile, too big and too toothy, stretched on its face. It… had dimples..
“Y-yeah… the drone. It, its battery died, and..” He swallowed hard when the thing stepped closer to him. It was really tall. Taller than any human could be. “Who—what, are you?”
The thing paused, only a foot away from him. Ryan felt frozen to his marrow. It tilted its head again, hands—no. Hand twitching at its side. Its left arm was cut short in an uneven, jagged end.
Ryan felt a shiver wrack down his spine. This thing was so imposing, so threatening. What was out here, bigger and stronger? Deadlier?
A large, too long hand brushed against his temple.
Ryan’s head imploded with pain.
Information — things that he’d never known before — words, phrases, everything — burst into his mind. It’s enough to bring him to his knees.
In his pain, he can faintly see the thing alien — no, Dy-L’n also collapsing into itself himself.
So many memories that weren’t his own — feelings, dreams, thoughts — and in one, big gasp, they’re locked into his mind, and the pain is fading.
He blearily looked up, panting for breath. “Wh-what did you… do to me..?”
Dy-L’n lifts his head, too big eyes meeting his. He speaks, but it is not English. And yet — Ryan had no trouble understanding. “We could not understand each other. So I made us understand.”
“What are you?”
Dy-L’n smiles at him. It’s a playful thing, full of dimples and a slight tease of his sharp teeth. “You, you… humans?” At Ryan’s hesitant nod, “You call us aliens. Martians.”
“You’re. A martian?” Ryan blinked hard. The word brings with it an association of a little green, big headed alien. Dy-L’n is anything but that. “So… UFOs… are those real?”
Dy-L’n smiles again, a trilling jingle sound leaving him that Ryan’s mind translates into laughter. “Sure.”
“Sure?”
Dy-L’n gives a sly shrug, slowly sitting down onto the sand. Ryan realizes that — because Dy-L’n is so tall, sitting has made them eye-level. “Yes. Sure.”
“You’re just fucking with me, aren’t you?” Ryan sighed, suddenly feeling like he was talking to Ka, and her endless sarcastic jabs that always flew over his head.
Dy-L’n jingles again. It’s a nice sound.
“What’d you do to me? Why can I understand you?”
Dy-L’n holds up his remaining hand, a soft, near invisible pink glow coming from the palm. “I gave you some of my memories, and looked through some of yours. I am sorry for the intrusion. I did not look anywhere but for your language.” He promised, too big eyes even wider in his sincerity. He was kinda cute, like a puppy.
Jesus, what was Ryan thinking?
“It’s… okay. Just ask, next time.” Next time? What is he expecting? For Dy-L’n to follow him back to base? To take him back to Earth? He couldn’t do that. Ryan could only imagine the amount of inhumane experiments they would force onto him.
Dy-L’n tilts his head, giving him a considering look. “You are not scared of me?”
“I-I mean… I was. At first. But… I dunno. I’m still alive, aren’t I?” Ryan shrugged, and slowly sat beside Dy-L’n, looking back up at the stars. “I’ll take what I can get. I just wanna go back home to my sister.”
Dy-L’n doesn’t reply, but Ryan can still feel his warmth beside him, can hear his very short breathing, as if he were panting for breath. But when Ryan glances over, he looked perfectly serene. Perhaps he needed less air, which made sense with the Mars atmosphere.
“Can I tell the others about you?”
Dy-L’n’s lips turned down. “I would prefer you did not. Humans are not the first to try and colonize my planet, even if you are the first to do so in a peaceful manner.”
Ryan accepted his denial, looking back to the stars. “Can I see you again?”
He thought that, maybe, even if he kept Dy-L’n existence to himself, he could learn things. And…
Besides… Dy-L’n seemed… nice. Sweet, almost.
In a weird, strange way, Ryan was almost…
Infatuated. Maybe not romantically, not yet but there was something about this alien that made Ryan wish to see more of him.
Dy-L’n gives a small, gentle smile, a small fang poking out as he looked down at him. “I will be here.” He said, and it sounded like a promise.
Ryan nodded, offering his own smile. He was… excited.
“Okay.”
He sits with Dy-L’n until the sun begins to creep up, the sands warming under him. As he heads back to base, he turns around to bid Dy-L’n goodbye.
But he’s already gone.
The only proof Ryan has that he was real, are the large footprints leading the opposite direction of him.
He smiles to himself, and follows the glow sticks once more. They’d see each other again tonight.

rylan flustering eachother during camp please :)
Short and sweet :)
Dylan x Ryan Flustering Each Other (The Quarry)
Dylan just—he could not look away. His eyes were trained, unmoving, foregoing any subtlety in his attention. How could he be expected to look away?
Ryan lifted himself out of the quarry, giving a playfully frustrated look to the giggling little campers who pushed him in. Dylan felt his cheeks warm a little—eyes struggling to turn away from how Ryan’s shirt clung to him, soaking wet and showing off his slim body.
So much for a ‘little summer crush’—because his heart and stomach were both fluttering with major league butterflies. God, what he wouldn’t give to have his hands on that body, to be able to kiss away the water sliding down his smooth throat…
As if he’d heard his thoughts, Ryan wiped away the droplets of water slipping down his face and neck, laughing at something one of the kids said to him. Dylan shouldn’t find Ryan being a good camp counselor as hot as he does.
“Mr. Dylan, why are your cheeks pink?” Izzy poked at him, her other hand tugging at his sleeve.
Speaking of being a good camp counselor.
“Sorry, chicken, Mr. Dylan got distracted by all the noise over there with Mr. Ryan. What’s wrong?” He smiled down at the tiny girl, at the stuffed bunny clutched tight in her arms.
“Rachel pushed me! I hurt my knee.” She pouted, lifting her knee for him to see. It was a little reddened, but there was no blood. Still, it was a big deal to her, so Dylan treated it like a big deal.
“Oh no! Do you need me to kiss it better, kiddo?” He asked, and Izzy gave him a pitiful nod, jutting her bottom lip out. So he did—and instantly she was all smiles, all better. She giggled, throwing her arms around his shoulders.
“You saved me! Thanks, Mr. Dylan!”
Dylan chuckled and hugged her back, before picking her up, swinging their bodies around in a big spin. She squealed, legs kicking excitedly as they twirled. “Rah! I’ve got you!”
“Ah! The big scary monster! Help!” She was giggling loudly even as he set her down, clutching her bunny to her chest as she beamed at him.
“I’ll spare you just this once, Izzy.” He winked at her playfully and she squealed, running away back to her friends, her bunny tight in her arms—her hurt knee long forgotten.
He grinned after her, before looking back towards where Ryan was at the dock.
Ryan was looking back.
Dylan’s eyes widened, quickly turning away. Oh god, Ryan saw him acting like a total idiot!
-
Loud happy squealing distracted Ryan from whatever he was going to say to Tyler—and he wiped at the lingering droplets of water curving over his mouth as he looked over.
His lips parted as he saw Dylan twirling around with Izzy in his arms, an adorably dimpled grin on his face. Dylan’s biceps flexed as he set Izzy down, his broad shoulders turning as she slid from his hold.
Ryan’s breathing thinned a little. He was sorta… unable to look away.
He’d always known he had an attraction to Dylan—he guessed that maybe he never really realized… how much he did. Dylan was…
Pretty. He was really pretty.
“Mr. Ryan has a cruuush,” One of the older boys who pushed him into the quarry cooed. Ryan didn’t even look away from Dylan to push the boy into the water.
What a little shithead.
…maybe he was right though.
Was Dylan always this… enchanting?
Was that the word?
He wanted to hold Dylan by his shoulders. Wanted to wrap his hands around his waist. Wanted those long fingers to—
Oh god—Dylan caught him staring!
He quickly turned away, eyes wider than usual as he smiled forcefully at his class. “Time to dry off!”
He’d never live this down, would he? He could only hope that Dylan wouldn’t tease him for this later. Maybe he could pass it off as being zoned out…

This was an Anonymous request, I accidentally deleted it while half-awake. So sorry! Still wrote it because yes please.
“Can you do infected Abi/werewolf Abi? We were robbed”
Infected Abigail (The Quarry)
The bite on her shoulder was pulsing in tune with her heartbeat.
Every step she took made her a little more breathless, a little more pained. But she kept her chin up, half-supported by Kaitlyn as they walked towards the lodge, Nick grunting and groaning in the wheelbarrow.
Kaitlyn’s continuously asked her how she’s feeling, if she needs to stop, and each time Abi’s answered with a firm “I’m fine, let’s keep going”. And while it had been a lie when she was first asked, now that they were nearing the lodge—she found it wasn’t a lie.
She was fine. Sure, the bite hurt like hell - but she wasn’t struggling to not cry out, and she was walking pretty steadily. It had long since stopped bleeding, too, despite how deep and jagged it had been.
When they reached the lodge, and Ryan stumbled a little on a rock, jolting Nick in the wheelbarrow, she couldn’t help the strange protective urge to snap at him with a quick and brash: “Easy!”
“I’ve got it, he’s fine,” Ryan reassured, but Abi brushed past him, kneeling in front of Nick as he sat up in the wheelbarrow, grunting a little.
“Are you in pain?” She asked, gentle, her eyes scanning his pretty face for any signs of pain or stress. But… like her, he seemed… fine.
Nick seemed to scan her face too, before he answered, glancing down at his blood-soaked jeans. “Nah, nah sorry I’m just… I’m really hungry.” He admitted. Abi nodded, and tried to ignore her own gnawing hunger as she stood back up.
“We’ll get you some food inside, okay?” She murmured, and he smiled softly at her as Ryan helped him out of the wheelbarrow. That smiled twisted into a grumpy frown as he palmed at his stomach.
“Aw man, I could eat a horse!”
Abi laughed, tucking into his side to support him, even if it seemed he didn’t need it. “Dunno if we can find you a horse, but there might be some granola leftover!”
He made a small ‘bleh’ noise. “Yuck, I hate granola.”
Once inside, Kaitlyn took Nick’s other side, waving Abi towards the kitchen.
“I’ll get you something to eat, okay?” She told Nick, making sure he nodded and waved in acknowledgment before she headed off.
-
By the time she came into the medical room, Kaitlyn was talking to Dylan and Ryan, which meant Nick was all alone. That settled wrongly against her skin, so she came over and sat near the bed, smiling at him softly.
“I couldn’t find anything for you to eat, I’m sorry,” She said, lying through her teeth. She couldn’t help it—she was starving, too. Nick didn’t seem to notice her lie, shaking his head with a small smile.
“It’s okay, thank you for looking.”
Abi smiled back, a small guilt in her heart that was quickly fading. Which… huh. That was weird, right? Usually she’d feel bad for hours, even days. But… she didn’t really feel bad at all. Maybe that was something to worry about… later.
“That was… fuck. I don’t even know what happened. It was all a blur,” Nick murmured, looking up at her with soft, tired eyes.
“How are you feeling?” Abi asked, hands fidgeting with her necklaces. The pain from her bite was nearly gone now. She was trying not to think about it.
“How are you holding up?” Nick deflected.
Abi faltered. “Me? I’m…” How was she? She… she didn’t really know. She wasn’t bleeding, she wasn’t in pain. But she felt… weird. “I’m—I’m fine. I’m just happy you’re okay. Are you okay? Sorry.. I just…” Asked that. Jeez. What was with her?
Nick didn’t look irritated. Just fond. “S’okay.”
The door opened, and Kaitlyn rushed in, a shotgun in hand. “Alright, they’re off to find a radio or… something.” She shrugged.
Abi couldn’t help but get oddly nervous, staring down at the gun. “What’s with the… um..”
“Oh, they found another in Mr. H’s office, y’know, just in case.” Kaitlyn explained.
Abi swallowed dryly, but nodded. Okay. That… made sense. “Um, so—what happened to the lights?”
Kaitlyn shrugged for an answer, and then turned to Nick, surveying him. “Any better?”
“Doing okay.”
Abi worried about Dylan and Ryan, out there in the woods with… whatever attacked her and Nick. “Are they… going to the radio hut?” She asked, hands wringing together anxiously.
“Yeah. Phone’s dead, they’re gonna try and send out a signal.”
Abi barely nodded before there was a… noise.
Above them.
All three of them glanced upward, eyes wide. Someone was here. Someone… maybe… the hunter that tried to take Nick?
“Is someone else here?” She couldn’t help but ask, heart racing in her chest. Oh god. What would they do? Kaitlyn wouldn’t… couldn’t shoot a person… right?
“I’m gonna… check it out.” Kaitlyn murmured back, grip tightening on the shotgun. Shock and outrage ran through Abi.
“What? You can’t!”
Kaitlyn’s brows rose in surprise. “I ‘can’t’?”
“Maybe you shouldn’t. It’s dangerous.” Nick added, unintentionally softening the surprise of Abi’s shout.
Kaitlyn narrowed her eyes in a huff. “I can handle myself. I’m gonna check it out.” She started heading toward the door without another word. Abi’s jaw worked to the side, an unusual frustration hitting her as she watched Kaitlyn disappear.
“She’ll be fine..” Nick muttered.
Abi hoped so, or she’d be so pissed. ‘I can handle myself’ her ass. “Yeah..”
She settled back down, looking over at Nick as they waited for Kaitlyn to return.
“So, this might not be the best time to ask this,” Nick began, avoiding her eyes. “But…” He hesitated.
“What?” Abi encouraged, frowning at him, giving him her full attention.
Nick hesitated again, studying her for a moment before he continued. “I was—thinking about the start of summer, when we met—the start of camp—and… now the summers over—and like… the thought that—it’s the last time we’re gonna see each other, you know?”
Abi faltered. “What? What do you mean?”
“I just mean… I’d really hate for this summer to be the last time we ever talk to each other. You know?”
Abi thought back to what all happened tonight. Flirting with Nick as they got kindling, the momma boar, the… the bonfire. The bonfire. She felt anger rush through her, unlike anything she’d ever felt.
“And why does that matter?”
“What?” Now it was Nick’s turn to frown, confused.
Abi shook his head, calming herself. No. She and Nick already talked the bonfire out in the woods. She wasn’t mad at him. He wasn’t the one who chose to kiss Emma. That was all her friend’s doing. If Emma was even her friend.
“Sorry. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean that. I… I want to stay in contact with you, but… I guess I was too scared to ask for your number. I… I didn’t want to be rejected.” Again. Abi was tired of being rejected by every person she had a crush on. She hoped… maybe Nick would finally be the one to return her feelings.
“I wouldn’t have rejected you,” Nick murmured, staring up at her with intense, warm eyes. Abi gave him a hesitant, hopeful smile.
“Really?” However—before Nick can reply, there’s the sound of heavy feet above, like someone was running. Kaitlyn.
Abi shot up from her seat, fear covering her abruptly. How could she have forgotten about Kaitlyn?! What was going on with her?
“W-we have to hide!” She hissed to Nick, who was lifting himself off the bed, not a single grunt or groan. Maybe the adrenaline was keeping him from feeling pain—or maybe he was like her, and his wounds were mostly healed already.
“It’s okay, I’ve got this,” Nick reassured, standing up straight—just as Kaitlyn entered, gunless and shaky. “Hey, what’s going on? Where’s the gun?”
“Are you okay?” Abi asked, too, guilty for not worrying like she normally would. It was like the moment Kaitlyn had left the room—the only thing on Abi’s mind was Nick. Which was… weird. She didn’t like it.
“We have go, we have to run,” Kaitlyn said instead of answering their questions. Abi quickly shook her head. Run? They couldn’t run, they’d be heard!
“No, we have to hide!” She countered.
Footsteps were approaching the door. Nick grabbed Abi’s arm, tugging her behind the half-wall to hide. Kaitlyn cursed under her breath, but joined them.
The hunter—the one Nick mentioned—entered, wielding his own gun, and the one Kaitlyn lost. Abi held her breath instinctively, and saw the other two doing the same.
He crept around, peering around each corner of the room, but they carefully avoided him, moving for the open window and slipping outside. Once they were walking hurriedly away from the window, towards the steps that would take them away from the lodge, only then did Abi release her breath.
They made it. They didn’t get caught.
“N-now what?” She asked Nick and Kaitlyn.
Kaitlyn looked over, eyes lit with an idea.
-
They neared the radio hut.
Abi felt horrible. It wasn’t in the same way as before, when she was first bit. That had stung, had felt like she was being eaten alive slowly.
Now? She felt… clammy, shaky. Like she had the flu. Her eyes were watering excessively and her lungs rattled when she took in another shaky breath.
A glance to Nick told her he was feeling just as bad, his skin ashen and his eyes circled with a deep purple. She leaned heavily against him, something she never would’ve dreamed of doing before. But he didn’t even seem to notice her weight on his side, staring blearily ahead as they moved towards the radio hut.
Until—“Kaitlyn don’t come up here! There’s an animal on the roof—just get into a cabin, now!” Ryan’s voice echoed through the air from the PA system. “Go!”
A momentary pause before—
They ran into the nearest cabin, the same one Abi broke into with Emma earlier this afternoon, and slammed the door shut as a howl rang out around them.
Abi hugged herself, body shaking with fear and with an itchy sense of dread, stepping away from the door as Kaitlyn blocked it with a chair. Nick was standing still, expression a little dazed and unaware.
Abi was so… so warm. Her body… hurt. She tiredly closed her eyes, faintly hearing Kaitlyn muttering nervously to herself. Her gums ached, her—her nail beds feeling like they were being pushed out. Black veins scattered through her skin, her skin which felt as if it was pulsating from the inside out.
“Abi? Hey…” Kaitlyn lightly grabbed at her arm, and Abi blearily opened her eyes, looking at the other girl with a strange, empty expression. “You okay? Y-you look…” Concern wrecked Kaitlyn’s face, eyes shining with worry.
Abi was not okay. But she nodded anyway. “Yeah, yeah just… I…” She fell silent, words not coming to her. She glanced exhaustedly over at Nick, seeing him peering through the window at the radio hut.
A loud, piercing whine screamed into the air, and Abi collapsed to her knees. She clutched at her ears, crying out. Dimly, she could see Nick doing the same—could see Kaitlyn wincing from the sound, but not nearly as affected.
However—when the noise cut out, and Nick relaxed, straightened up—Abi didn’t. She continued to grasp at her ears, low groans leaving her as she gasped for breath. No no no. This—this wasn’t right. She was—!
Kaitlyn hurriedly opened the cabin door, peering out for any sign of Ryan and Dylan. Abi gasped out painfully, hands dropping to the floor to dig into the wooden boards, scrambling for some kind of support.
Nick knelt beside her, his hand touching her back. “A-Abi?”
She… she growled, smacking his hand away. “Don’t touch me!” She cried out, a mix of anger and fear in her heart. As soon as the words left her lips, her face crumpled, tears stinging into her eyes. “I’m sorry. I-I don’t know what’s… what’s happening to me… Nick—!”
“It-it’s… it’s okay..” Nick didn’t seem bothered by her smack, nor her growl, his face strangely blank and… satisfied? His eyes… they didn’t look right. She—in too much pain—couldn’t decipher what it was. “Abi..”
“Hey! We need help!” Kaitlyn shouted to Ryan and Dylan—presumably coming over now that the animal was gone. Abi didn’t care. She cried out again, struggling to stand upright, wanting off the floor. “It’s Abi!”
Ryan and Dylan rushed in—absolutely covered in blood and sweat—and where she would normally worry and fret, especially at the sight of Dylan’s left arm—she didn’t care at all.
Abi managed to stand, breathing heavy and raspy, a growl to her voice as she stumbled away from Nick, away from them all. “Stay back..”
“Hey, it’s okay, Abi…” Ryan tried to soothe, handing the shotgun to the much more qualified Kaitlyn. “What’s wrong? How can we help?”
Abi sneered, backing away another step. “You can’t help me. No one can help me. N-no one… no one loves me…” Tears fell from her eyes, her eyes that burned and swam with spotty vision. “Y-you all hate me, don’t you? You never liked me at all..”
“What? Abi that’s—that’s not true at all!” Kaitlyn said, frowning worriedly at her, holding her hand out to her. Abi smacked it away, feeling horrifically pleased when Kaitlyn cried out, holding her hand close in pain.
“Fuck off!” Abi snapped when she saw the other three step closer. Her eyes focused on Nick in particular, lips curling in a snarl. “You’re so fucking annoying. So insecure.”
Nick’s eyes darkened, shaking his head. “Abi—“
“‘Oh Abi, sorry I kissed Emma, it was just a dare!’” She mocked, pain radiating through her core. She grunted and her head jerked a little with the sound. “H-hah… you could’ve told her no. But you didn’t. You k-kissed her back.”
“It was just a game.” Nick said back, strange, pale eyes narrowing a little.
“It’s all a game for you, isn’t it? You just wanted to hurt me. Wanted to… wanted to see how much you could push me.” She accused, heart racing, throbbing in her chest.
“Hey, guys—please—this isn’t the time!” Kaitlyn begged, and Abi faintly turned her eyes towards her, seeing her holding the gun with a tighter grip now, anxious.
“I think it is. You gave Emma the prank. You knew she would pick Nick,” Abi moved closer to Kaitlyn, staring her dead in the eyes.
“A-Abi—“
Ryan, hands tightly gripping at Dylan’s bleeding left arm, spoke up. “Guys—“
A shot rang out in the field.
Everyone turned to look, seeing another animal sprinting by, seeing a woman chasing after it with her gun in hand.
And then Abi cried out again—one more time. One final time.
She fell back to the floor, heaving and gagging loudly as her body churned and pulsated, as if it was too small for her insides. Her eyes rolled back as she shrieked out, voice layered with an inhuman growl—
And her body tossed itself backwards—she was, she was—!
-
She woke up inside of the… the camp store..?
She stared around exhaustedly, mouth dry and body sore as if she’d ran a marathon. She wasn’t clothed, entirely naked as she sat up, staring at the room around her. She was… was locked in the storage room of the store.
There were camping gear bags nearby, and she shakily dug through them, finding women’s clothes in one. She put them on, limbs weak and trembling, and went for the door, knocking her fist on it.
She hoped, prayed, that someone was out there. This door locked on the outside.
Thankfully, it doesn’t take long before the door is pushed open—and standing in front of her is a bloody, weary Emma.
“Emma?” Abi rasped, throat raw and voice barely audible.
Emma stared for a moment, eyes watery, before she rushed forward, tugging Abi into a tight hug. “I’m so glad you’re okay.”
Abi stared in shock, for just a moment, before she fell into Emma’s arms, hugging her back.
She… she’s not entirely sure what happened—has no memory past entering that cabin with Kaitlyn and Nick—but… she just hopes that… she didn’t hurt anyone.
God… she really hoped she didn’t hurt anyone.
“Did I… is everyone?”
“I… I dunno. I went to the lodge, but… that thing, or… you—you chased me here. I, I barely managed to lock you up.” Emma explained, shaky and unsure as she let her go, wiping at her eyes.
“I…” I’m sorry, she wants to say. But Emma shakes her head.
“No, don’t apologize. I’m just… I’m glad you’re okay, Abi.”
So Abi didn’t apologize. She just pulled Emma into another hug.
