There's a large variety of opinions on this topic some think Katniss was just being spiteful in the instance he called Peeta a mutt others think it was a coping mechanism, others say she really believed it and at first treated Peeta like a mutt in 451.

Where do you stand on the question of if Katniss thought Peeta was a Capitol muttation after he returned from the Capitol hijacked?

It was definitely a coping mechanism, but that doesn't mean that it wasn't also a little bit true. As far as she could tell, huge parts of Peeta's personality had been erased and replaced with Capitol programming. (Which I guess would make him more of a Capitol puppet or a Capitol automaton than a Capitol mutt, but now we're arguing semantics.) It isn't until their forced proximity in 451 (after quite a bit of therapy) that she starts to see signs that the real Peeta might still be somewhere in there.

I try to imagine that world, somewhere in the future, with no Games, no Capitol. A place like the meadow in the song I sang to Rue as she died. Where Peeta’s child could be safe.

Started thinking too hard about Peeta stopping to pick Katniss a little bouquet of flowers in the middle of nowhere and then immediately getting his heart broken. Got incredibly sad. 0/10 recommend.

Just finished reading the Hunger games trilogy.

I wanted to capture the book versions, but the film adaptations still have an iron grip on me, so you might see some similarities

Unreliable narrators are one hell of an idea. You can just write whatever, and if a reader points out "hey the way this scene happened should not be physically possible if it's done the way this character described it", you can just be like "yeah I don't trust that fucker either."

i love it when a fandom agrees on one particular portmanteau ship name and you can tell it’s because the alternatives are all atrocious. like i don’t know anything about glee but even i know that they only call it “klaine” because no one would be able to take it seriously if it was “blurt”

Yea I am aware “Olive” doesn’t always mean a person of color. However, in the literal first chapter of the first book Katniss describes that there is enough of a difference in skin tone that her mom and sister stick out really badly in the seam. Katniss and prim are both mixed. I think people assume when I say Katniss is POC that she’s black. All we know is she’s not white. AND neither is Prim, even though Prim is white passing.

Also the term “Olive” has been used to describe deep tan and indigenous completions for ages. I swear. The Hunger Games is YOUNG ADULT and people still aren’t getting it. It isn’t enough just to read it if you don’t have the literature understanding to glean anything from it.

This is what happens when neurodivergent book nerds cross the path of a casual movie fan. 💀 I swear I don’t try to get into arguments especially with the goblins on tik tok but for the love of everything stfu.

Maybe something about second times, either sex or kisses or even sleeping together gbt, because the first time they’re so hesitant and nervous. Second time they’re giddy that it’s happening again

One wild night after he returns, they sit on the back porch and eat an entire cake with their hands. Neither of them ever had seconds growing up. They decide there’s no point in not making up for that, and feed each other vanilla sponge and raspberry jam until they’re too sticky to continue, and wash themselves clean with the spigot around the back of the house.

And later, she watches him shade the exact pink of her sister’s rosy nose, his eyes tearful, and she cups his cheek in her hand and turns his face to kiss him.

“Why’d you do that?” he whispers.

She can’t articulate it: how grateful she is that he came back to her, that he holds her grief as tenderly as he holds his own, that he preserves the memories of others, and how he does it so lovingly because his own memories were stolen — and how beautiful it is.

“You’re beautiful,” she tells him.

She tells him again in the way she lifts his sleep shirt over his head and stares at him in the lamplight like he’s too good to be true. She’s never seen him look that shy, unable to meet her eyes, until she leans forward and kisses an ugly scar on his shoulder. “You’re beautiful,” she repeats, and she keeps repeating it with her body long after he’s stolen her breath away.

And later still, as she’s ferreting through the icebox for something to eat, it occurs to her that it’s not food she’s still hungry for.

He’s stretching in the rumpled nest of blankets when she comes back from the kitchen empty-handed.

“Couldn’t find anything you wanted?”

“I want you,” she says. He sits up so quickly it’s almost comical, and she meets him halfway, overeager, maybe, but they’ve done their time starving, and there’s no point waiting to have seconds.

Okay, I have no great desire to wade into the Is Peeta Useless "debate" but I was actually enumerating this for a fic so it's fresh in my mind. I think you're missing quite a few instances of Katniss saving Peeta, by my count she arguably saves his life eight times during the 74th Games.

1. Went and found him by the river, dug him up and fed him and cleaned his wound

2. Went to the feast for his medicine

3. Warned him off from eating the nightlock berries

4. Shot the mutts that were chasing him

5. Pulled him up on top of the Cornucopia after his leg was mauled

6. Shot Cato while he was choking Peeta

7. Put the tourniquet on his leg to stop him from bleeding to death

8. Berry gambit

people really, really exaggerate the degree to which Peeta needs Katniss to save him; they also really, really undersell the degree to which he’s saving her too; like, I just, if you’re going to make that argument … back it up?

I'm on page 300 of Mockingjay (progress!) and there would be so much to say, but here's a part I hadn't paid much attention to earlier (happens after the dinner where Peeta appears): "I sit on my bed, trying to stuff information from my Military Tactics books into my head while memories of my nights with Peeta on the train distract me."

Even when Katniss and Peeta are basically at their lowest point when it comes to their relationship, Katniss still can't get those memories out of her head. That is very telling of how much they meant for her emotionally, even physically nothing happened aside from cuddling.

Kissing and love are synonymous in her mind and she closes herself off to physical intimacy because she assumes it leads to feelings.
