CONSEQUENCES for Megha Vemuri, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Class of 2025.

Vemuri was banned from attending the undergraduate commencement ceremony on Friday, May 30, 2025 for having performed a “switcheroo” after she delivered a pro-Palestinian speech during the OneMIT commencement ceremony on Thursday, May 29, 2025, which deviated from the speech she had submitted in advance to university officials.

MIT Chancellor Melissa Nobles informed Vemuri via email that she and her family were barred from campus for most of Friday, citing that Vemuri "deliberately and repeatedly misled organizers" and violated MIT’s rules by leading a "protest from the stage," disrupting the ceremony. Vemuri disputed the characterization of her speech as a protest and called the ban an "overreach.”

I think some of the AI problem is that we have a generation of students, many of whom were taught to read by looking at the page and filling in what they didn't understand by guessing. Since they were taught that guessing was valid, it is probably kind of hard to explain why having a computer do the guessing is less valid.

I just saw a post saying that “oppressed people always have the right to armed resistance”.

I don’t agree — but there’s nuance.

So let’s start on the individual basis: are you, as an individual, allowed to defend yourself and potentially kill someone if they attack you? And by attack, I mean they are literally in that moment physically assaulting you.

Yes. You have the right to self-defense. I don’t think killing them should be your goal, but sometimes that’s the only way to escape. You’re not in the wrong, because they attacked you.

Do you have the right to kill someone later because they hurt you in the past? No. Do you have the right to kill someone because they hurt or killed someone you cared about in the past? No. Both of those cases are just murder.

Let’s go up a level.

Does systemic oppression justify a random member of a marginalized group going out and killing a random member of the privileged group?

Absolutely not. One-on-one murder is not a solution to systemic violence. Encouraging civilians to kill other civilians is not moral or just. That just continues the violence and increases the death toll.

the thing about the whole "they were israeli embassy workers so killing them was actually #praxis" angle is like.

are we sure we want "murdering people in cold blood because you don't like the job that they have" to be an acceptable mode of activism? because i'm a transgender person who works in childcare in a red town and i don't think that'd end well for me.

Spending the night in the subway. My university dorms were hit, several students got hurt, glass is shattered in the buildings. Had to run towards the subway station while drones were being hunted by the air defense. Heard explosions like 2 mins away from the station and ran with my sibling as fast as we could. Sometimes the explosions echo even deep underground.

When people say that Ukraine cannot win, look at all they’ve done with ridiculous restrictions on their capability to fight by the West this entire time. Don’t tell me they can’t win. They’ve never been allowed to fully fight.
