Even if Nari’s poised smile (forced, he suspected, he had seen how her eyes lit up when she really meant it) gave nothing away, his own expression was wide open. He hadn’t had time to prepare himself, hadn’t found any room to create a mask to hide his feelings behind. Every time he thought he was ready to face her it turned out that he wasn’t, actually. “Don’t apologize, you’re all good. Can I help you with anything? It’s… rare to see you down here.” 

Nari was rankled by the feeling that she should have seen this coming. She should have prepared. If she’d planned again, she could have maneuvered her way around this painfully awkward situation. Intellectually, Nari understood that she wouldn’t be able to avoid Dae forever, but Nari had never let something like that stop her before. The fallout from their breakup was a lot easier to deal with when she didn’t have to see him in person. Now, she was forced to face it head on. It made Nari feel like she was backed into a corner. Like a wild animal, Nari’s gut reaction to this was to attack. She’d brazen her way through this and then it would be over. 

If only it were that easy.

“Oh, well...” Nari paused for a moment. She didn’t want to tell him the real reason she was there. ‘I’m here to beg for line’ was not a flattering narrative. Nari might have broken up with Dae, but she didn’t want him to think poorly of her. Still, she was in something of a bind. She’d been so caught off guard by the mere presence of Daehyun that she hadn’t had the wherewithal to conjure up a clever story, explaining everything away. Instead, Nari was forced to say whatever lame excuse came into her head. 

“A friend of mine,” Nari cringed internally as the words came out of her mouth. It wasn’t a good start, but she at least was able to keep it together on the outside. “A friend of mine is in the studio today. I was just... looking for then. We have lunch plans and I don’t want to miss our reservation.”

It wasn’t a perfect story, but it was serviceable at least. Normally, Nari was more than confident in her ability to weave a tall tale, but Daehyun knew her too well for that. If anyone could see through her perfect smiles and carefully built facades, it was him. It was all the more reason to avoid him. Being around Dae was dangerous. For her career and for her heart. 

“I’m sure I’m taking you away from something much more important. Please don’t be bothered by me.”

“So, what exactly is the concept for today?” she asked. Jia had let Nari plan out as much of it as possible, figuring invading her turf in this way was bad enough. Nari had yet to get physically violent, but Jia had no doubt she would be scrappy if called upon. She eyed the amount of glitter. Oh boy.

Nari was rearranging her make up brushes in a futile attempt to ignore Jia’s very existence. When it’d been suggested to her that she invite Jia to do a video for her channel, Nari had been furious. She knew that she’d have to do thinks KTM’s way when they finally let her open the channel, but she hadn’t expected this. Maybe she’d been willfully ignoring the possibility. She could live with any of the other girls on the channel, though she admittedly wouldn’t be thrilled, but not Jia. Nari didn’t appreciate the assertion that she needed Jia of all people to bring in the views. 

Nari grew more and more angry the longer she thought about it. The movement of her hands became more forceful. She accidentally hit one brush with another and the pair clattered to the floor. Nari sucked in a breath and held it for a moment. She needed to calm down. She wouldn’t be able to make it through filming if she didn’t. It would only be so easy for her to gouge Jia’s eyes out with an eyeliner pen. Nari exhaled and bent down to pick up the brushes. Maybe she’d allow herself to just one ‘accidental’ eye poke with an eyeshadow brush. 

A few deep breathes later, Nari rose and finally met Jia’s eyes. Her lips were forced into a smile, her voice, when she spoke, was sickly sweet. 

“I was thinking something a bit dramatic,” Nari said, pulling out an eye shadow pallet full of dark blues and purples. “Smokey eye, maybe? It feels rather American, doesn’t it? And it would fit your concept, after all. You’ll look very cool.”

Nari might’ve hated Jia Accosta but Nari was damn sure going to make her look georgous. She wasn’t going to make a fool of herself on her own channel all because of some stupid, spoiled American girl. No one would be able to watch the video and say that Nari didn’t give it her all. No one would ever know just how much she hated Jia. 

Once she had everything settled, Nari finally turned on the camera.

“Hey guys!” She said, pep in her voice. “Welcome back to the channel. Today we’ve got a very special video: I’m going to be making over my friend and group member: Circe!”

a run-in with @idxdaehyun at the ktm building

Nari walked through the halls of the Koala.T Music building with a sense of purpose. She’d just heard a semi-finalized demo of Divinity’s next title track, Butterfly. The track itself was fine. Not exactly Nari’s style, but she could make it work. KTM had certainly thrown worse her way. The real problem was Nari’s lack of lines. She’d recorded more than she ended up with on the demo. Nari was a lead vocal, dammit, she should get the lines to match the title. So, really, it was only natural that Nari ended up stalking the KTM hallways, looking for the track’s producer. She had more than a few words for him. 

Pastel pink kitten heels clicked with great force against the tiled floors, created a louder sound than one would expect, as Nari passed by one studio room after another. The floor she was on was nearly entirely devoted to music production. Surely that little weasel had to be around somewhere. Nari formulated her plan as she looked. She’d start off sweetly, praising that latest mix of the song. Lull him into a false sense of security. After he’d been flattered enough to have his defenses lowered, she’d strike. He wasn’t going to get away without giving Nari back the lines she deserved.

The thought of it consumed Nari. She was so caught up in her scheming that she didn’t notice that someone else had entered the hallway until she’d just about run into them. Nari switched gears immediately. 

“Oh, I’m so sorry!” Nari said, voice sweet. She accompanied these words with a swift bow. Nari was so quick to show her deference that she didn’t get a proper look at who the other person was until after she began to rise from her bow. “I’m just so clumsy. I hope I didn’t — “

Nari’s words dropped off as the realization hit her and her heart dropped into her stomach to match. Oh, why did it have to be him? Nari had been relatively successful in avoiding in avoiding Daehyun in the time since she’d broken things off with him. Really, it was almost impressive for them being in the same company. She’d found being in a relationship disadvantageous to her career, but Nari hadn’t quite calculated how the awkwardness of the situation would affect things. It took her a moment to recollect herself.

“Daehyun-sunbae,” Nari said with a soft smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. Her first instinct had been to speak to him informally, the way she used to, but that didn’t go along with Nari’s plan to keep Daehyun at arm’s length. It’d been going well so far and Nari didn’t want to ruin it with her sentimentality. “Ah, I didn’t realize it was you. I’m sorry if I got in your way.”

filming nightmare: eve’s debut mv in los angeles with @idxjia

Nari should have been happier. 

That wasn’t to say she wasn’t happy; of course she was happy. She was in Los Angeles, filming the music video for the debut of what was clearly KTM’s best idea ever: the Eve subunit of Nightmare. The song was an upbeat top number with fun, light choreography. She even had the most lines. Not that she counted. 

She definitely counted.

Nari was happier than she’d been since her debut, really, but her joy was marred by the mere existence of one person: Jia Acosta. Nari had problems with Jia from the moment she met. If Nari were the introspective type (she wasn’t,) she’d realize it’d been jealousy. Despite her awkward nature, Jia was offered opportunities left and right. Nari had to work her ass off for those and even then, they were paltry compared to the one’s Jia recieved. She got acting jobs despite the clear lack of popularity. Meanwhile, Nari languished. KMT had only just started letting her promote herself on Youtube. They’d let her make her own beauty channel but she had no real company support beyond that. It was up to Nari herself to build up her subscriber count. 

Jia was talented, too. That was another problem. Jia’s talent in rapping and dancing, that came naturally to her. Nari on the other hand, had to practice until her feet bled and yet somehow she didn’t didn’t come close. It just wasn’t fair. Jia got everything and never did anything for it. Even when she’d gotten herself into that mess with 1nferno’s main rapper, the company still stood by her. Nari absolutely hated Jia Acosta. This was why she wasn’t as happy as she could’ve been, should’ve been. Jia Acosta was also in the Eve subunit and she was absolutely ruining everything for Nari.

On the heels of Jia’s utter dominance during the Chile showcase, there they were in LA. Jia was the only one out of the three of them who spoke decent English. Everytime the subunit when anywhere, Jia was the de facto representative. Nari didn’t appreciate that, either. But then, who would want to be so dependent on a hated rival? Nari would rather have been the only Korean speaking person for miles around than have to ask Jia for anything. But, as much as she hated it, that was the case and she would just have to deal with it. Especially considering that the director of their music video was American himself. If Nari wanted to put her best food foward, she’d have to make this work. At least for now.

Nari sidled up next to Jia, closer than she would ever normally be. “What is he saying?” Nari whispered to the younger girl. She was referring to the director who was speaking as though everyone understood him. American were always so presumptuous.
