But God always sends that reminder student at the right time to reach out to you to tell you all the fun memories they had when they were under your care. A student, who got on my last nerves, but was my boy, reached out to me today, and we are going through memory lane. 5+ years later. It’s such a great feeling. Celebrating culture is fun. Though I am not Haitian, my students are. So are many of my coworkers, fraternity brothers, and even some old college friends. Moving from DC to Miami had its challenges. When it comes to correcting our students, many times, we forget that they are still children and young teenagers. They are going to make mistakes 1000+ times. And guess what, they are supposed to. Our purpose as Educators is not to only and constantly say: “When you get into the real world, you won’t have so many chances” or “you are going to learn today….” and write disciplinary referrals on them.... Our job is to understand the root as to why they are acting out while still making them aware of the outdoor realities and helping them do better. And even if they mess up after 3 times of doing the above, to not hold it over there head everytime they enter our space. But to show them love, grace, and patience. Yes, issue consequences but ensuring they genuinely understand why what they did was wrong. And then positively praising them anytime we see any growth and improvement. The Late Honorable Congressman John Lewis charged us all to stir up some “good trouble.” What does that even mean?

It means that YOU must be willing to get your hands and feet dirty. It means that your work ethic has to match the size of your dreams and goals. It means that you must do whatever it takes to make your dreams a reality... even if the finish line seems impossible. Every breath that you take is an indication that your life still has purpose. There’s a generation that needs you to put your war clothes on and proceed to the front line. So I challenge you to take some time today to plan out how you are going to make this week different. How are you going to show up to work and/or class? How are you going to be your best self?
