Penna nera su carta. Colorazione digitale.

Disponibile in varie taglie. Inchiostro serigrafico bianco su maglia nera.

Felt tip india ink pen over tracing paper. First test for a design I want to print over some shirts. It turned out better than I expected. I just need to make other test with different backgrounds, draw better spines, and I’m ready to start printing

Some exercises in texture and tone drawing made with the gillott 303 nib. Here I tried to represent the values as they really were, expecially in the “billhook” draw where I decided to represen it without any freedom during the execution. It was a stupid decision, because the drawing is too dark, it looked very nice without crosshatched shades in the background. Lesson learned.
It’s really hard to create a decent composition with everyday objects because they usually have prints oll over. I think we live in a overprinted world.

Some exercises with simple objects with different lights and backgrounds. After a lot trials, finally some achievements. The key is study the values, then transmute them to greyscale. Mostly done with Gillott 303 and 404 for outlines.

Round sahapes study. Round shapes are harder to render in every medium, firstly because shades gradation are less defined, and secodary because of the pen and ink medium itself, especially for freehand/sketchy styles. This medium is better suited for flat and angular shapes.

Tone study in pen and ink, first satisfactory result after a lot of trials and errors. I just needed to place the value scale near the subject to compare them and choose the most appropriate. The author used wooden solids against a white background. Since I don’t have any wooden solids, I papercrafted them, and I switched the contrast: white subject against a toned background. In this way I emphasized the negative spaces, one of the most important rule I learnt from the book “drawing with the righ side of the brain”.

To help understand the logic of light, the author of the book suggest to make several sketches with white pencil or paint on black paper. I tried to represent the values in the most accurate way I can whith a chalk-pencil. I’m pretty satisfied with the results, expecially with the ink bottle. Sadly the fixative I used - hairspray :) - toned down the original white.

I'm actually studying "rendering in pen and ink" by Arthus L. Guptill. After the first exercises with pen nibs I had to make some outline only works. Like the author suggest, I used Gillott 303 and 404 on heavy smooth paper. No bleeding with automatic pen ink! The little barn in the center was taken from googlestreetview, somewhere in south Estonia. The others are from photo i shot.
