My Henry realized, very early on, how deep Hans's affection for him truly goes.

Sure, he has his second home—Rattay—now. He has friends. People who genuinely enjoy his company, even. But in a room full of people who love him, he knows who loves him the most.

He knows who will make excuses just to spend time with him. He knows whose eyes gravitate toward his face in every situation, during every sentence of every conversation.

He knows who will miss him the most and think about him when he is away.

And after everything that happened in Skalitz—losing his family—being the object of this kind of love from the most unexpected person (out of all the people in Bohemia!) feels strange in a "life is really unpredictable to turn out this way."

Years ago, when I first watched the opening cutscenes for KCD1, I thought the "moral of the story" was to let your kids follow their dreams/what they want to do in life.

I actually blamed Martin (Henry's dad) for how hard the game was. "Dude if you had just let him practice swordsmanship", "If you had let him see a little bit of the world prior to this" "Maybe Henry's life would be a little less hard"

But now I don't think it'd have mattered either way

My affection for Henry as a video game protagonist is very different from any other (even customizable characters that I had to carefully sculpt the noses of)

Initial impression of him was not that great. Maybe because he and his friends looked like grown men with receding hairlines, and still acted like high school delinquents

At first, the game was super hard for me. I think I had to restart 3 times, I couldn't help but start to feel empathy towards him.

This was a world very new to both us. Unforgiving and cruel.

Gradually, we both got better. It was very nice seeing him talk his way out of things, when prior to that every speech check failed. And I knew what to do and where to go, even with my very terrible sense of direction.

Soon, that initial annoyed feeling turned into understanding then fondness. Now he is my favorite video game protagonist.

Henry: *is canonically dead ass called “my companion” by Hans himself*

Henry: *canonically saves Hans’s life and carries him home from battle. twice. thrice, if you count the bathhouse fist-fight with that one murderously jealous dude.*

Henry, as canonically spoken to by Hans the vast majority of the time: “oh henriiiiii??? oh blacksmith! Don’t you think thiiiis is an ENTIRELY nOHRmal tone of vOIce to use on your comPLETELY PLAHtonic friend? yeeeeeeeeeeees….?” 

Henry, canonically, in fucking public x2: “scoot over, don’t want to trod on anything vital”

Henry, canonically, in fucking public x3: “Mind you don’t come to blows with a blacksmith, my young lord!” ;)

Henry, delivering a canonical dialogue lecture to a self-hating gay monk he’s known for approx. 5 minutes in 1403: “Don’t ever be ashamed of who you are, how you’re born is not your fault, you’re hurting NO ONE, LOVE yourself”
