I see a lot of references to the scene in Goodbye Stranger where Dean, on his knees, begs Cas to come back to himself (and to Dean), and I see a lot of reference to Dean referring to praying as begging, but not a lot about how these scenes are literally in back to back episodes? Dean Winchester really said I don't pray because it feels like begging, but I'll pray to you, and then in the literal next episode said fuck it, let's drop the pretense, I am begging. I need you.

We’ve been talking about how Rachel’s claim in 6.18 that Dean calls every time he “stubs is toe” isn’t even remotely true and is probably based on excuses Cas made to her and other angels for his absence when he was hanging out with Crowley, but I think it’s also useful to point out that despite Sam and Dean’s confusion at Rachel’s assertion in 6.18 and Dean’s clear offense, Dean clearly assumes there’s some truth to the idea that Cas is bothered by the few times Dean has prayed to him. That’s actually how the infamous “Cas doesn’t live in my ass” discussion starts 6.19 “Mommy Dearest”—because Bobby has been looking for leads on Eve on his own and them pointedly looks at Dean and says it’s time for him to give it up and ask Cas for help… and Dean protests because he doesn’t want to bother Cas if he’s busy.

BOBBY: I'm looking, but I'm thinking maybe it's time you made a call.

DEAN: Why has it always got to be me that makes the call, huh? It's not like Cas lives in my ass. The dude's busy.

I also think maybe he doesn’t want to make the call because if Cas actually is frustrated about being contacted, Dean doesn’t want it to be at him lol.
