Panda Lux -- Wolke7
The expression "cloud nine" has a German equivalent—Wolke Sieben—which literally translates to "cloud seven". I always thought this was funny. Why would clouds have numbers anyway? I imagined clouds might have house numbers, each being like an office responsible for certain emotions 😅
The etymology of "cloud nine" is unclear. Interestingly, several different numbers used to be used in English: 8, 38—, and also 7 like you do in German. But if you compare their frequencies of usage no. 9 has always been the favorite.
The number seven seems to originate in the phrase "seventh heaven" which was conflated with the the cloud expression. This in turn references the concept of the seven heavens, layers in the sky, each corresponding to one of the seven visible heavenly bodies. According to the Jewish tradition, the throne of god resides in the very last firmament and here the highest of angels sing never-ending praise to him.
And what is being in love if not a never-ending hymn of praise, a feeling of uttermost bliss bathing in the glory of your lover, and a profound, bitter-sweet yearning to be united once more? You can hear and feel this in Panda Lux's song:
Give me a sign Give me a sign Give me a sign When will you give me a sign Even if it is only in a dream Show me the cloud That’s all I ever wished for On cloud number nine With you in the sky And we’re floating And we’re floating
