was almost worried fascist fanboy was about to get a redemption arc but no he found out his fascist girlfriend lied to him which meant the last 2 years of his work meant nothing, choked her out bc he's an incel, thought he was about to get a personal victory against cassian only to find out that his archnemesis has absolutely no fucking clue who he is bc he's irrelevant, and then gets headshotted by the billionaire tailor who he's been conning this whole time. FANTASTIC 10/10 NO NOTES.

Cassian and Syril beating the shit out of each other was so funny from Cassian's perspective. Poor man was so confused

my Andor thoughts keep going back to Dedra and Syril and their weird little, whatever they are. and i wrote way too much. what else is new
{to preface i wanna be clear i don't think who you ship as a viewer is indicative of your morals or what you'd support in real life. it's fictional, one of my favorite shows of all time is Hannibal, i know i get it i'm not saying i'm King Objective Correctness i am just talking}
before seeing any of the new season i was strongly anti-shipping these two, i think for good reasons -- it's uncomfortable any time you see the culture of fandom shipping just accept THE representations of banal evil as their uwu blorbos with no hesitation. my killjoy hypocrite feelings on it are probably exacerbated by current events.
ANYWAY i feel differently now because i'm looking at it from a sort of audience attendee in an 1800s surgical operating theater perspective. i had to shift from fuzzy-feelings-shipping to case study shipping. mainly, i didn't realize Dedra was that autistic. my entire immediate family is autistic, i say that from the inside & without any weird stank. the interviews between the actors also helped me understand a lot, but from just what's in the show, it's like they're in a hypoallergenic gray terrarium doing human social interaction as best they know how.
online i see the predictable 'domme Dedra uses the strap' take as much as i expected to, but as a very demisexual freakazoid i took away something different. i see them as a gray-aro-ace couple who don't know what any of those things are who are so steeped in draconian law-abiding and mandatory worship for the empire that it effectively erased love and romance from their ledger. they aren't interested in it beyond (again, this is me speculating) utilizing the image of having a long-term steady partner/spouse to fulfill their roles as ideal, normal denizens of the galactic empire.
except THEN. They actually like each other. that's the intrigue for me, that's what got me to perk up and lean forward. my impression just from arc 1 of season 2 is that Dedra, probably to her own surprise and chagrin, actually feels protective of Syril. i don't see them initially getting together due to any real passion for each other but i can see them agreeing to a living situation for mutual benefit, and then a whittling-away of indifference happens from long term exposure to Syril Karn being a very determined sycophant, and suddenly Dedra Meero finds herself incensed when Syril mentions that his mother tells him he's a worthless disappointment every time he talks to her.
clearly i have less to say about Syril in all this, probably bc he's the more straightforward case? i feel many viewers got the impression Syril is passionate about Dedra, just because that's what audiences are used to, but i really think it's more about bootlicking and over-zeal for the empire, which Dedra just represented when he was stalking her. She was an established person he'd met, she was his foot in the door, not a romantic pursuit.
he's a little fashy fanboy who managed to bag a high-ranking ISB agent and he's so caught up in his own little mission he is oblivious how crazy they look together. the whole ship is a "you're telling me SHE'S with HIM?" situation where neither party seems to be aware of that, and i am enjoying it very much
#thank for expressing almost my exact thoughts#i was so deep in the hate pit for them but smth about season 2 put me right back on them#literally my two little bugs i am studying fascinatedly#anyways here are prev tags from another person:#the initial intruige to me was them living together while hardly even being in a relationship#something about like you said the expected standard relationship roles#no acknowledging any attraction no establishing any kind of relationship#just really awkwardly living together figuring out how to be human together#which to be clear is not about them both clearly being autistic but instead about them both clearly not being properly socialized#dedra grew up in an “imperial kinder block%#whatever that is#and syril was likely very isolated and clearly very degraded by his mother#not to mention the general dehumanizing nature of fascist systems#they both are tools in a machine that doesn't even want them to properly engage with it#their whole narrative function is showing how the empire is so arrogant and oblivious that it doesn't even listen to its officers who#are going above and beyond to solve and pursue problems#they are degraded and punished for it rather than appreciated#horribly conditioned to not be alive in any way other than the expected behavioral patterns that exist around them#but i digress. they genuinely like each other more than they expect to#i have a lot to say about how their relationship and socialization and connection is melting through the fascistic roles they fill#and how they are such a wonderful characterizing take on fascists and how dehumanizing fascism is#the general take away is them connecting in a way they didn't expect to while still being super awkward around each other#and shedding a lot of the formalities and restricting habits / patterns of thought that they held prior#prev tags#andor#andor season 2#andor season 2 spoilers#syril karn#dedra meero#syril x dedra

such a huge fan of whatever the hell syril and dedra have going on right now in andor. syril is such a freak and dedra is just chill with it? protective over it? kinda into it? they are the cringest freakest losers the galaxy has ever seen. he spent last season stalking and obsessing over her and now they live together. he buys groceries and she pets his face. he face plants on her bed and she goes Awwwww. and he is still so awkward but she is just as awkward? obsessed with the shot of them just standing silently in the living room not looking at each other waiting for syril's mother to show up. they are like two strange fascist sunflowers growing beautifully side by side. not to mention syril still being religious about his corporate 9-5 while dedra gets put on an intragalactic propaganda campaign. but it is also quite sweet in a way. syril gets overstimulated at the family function and has to go to the other room to have a moment and his mother tells dedra Isn't he just so strange? surely you'll easily make him less strange. and then dedra says I like him so strange Kill yourself. what a lovely family.
#these two are so disgusting I love it#they're like an ongoing car crash between a cop car and a septic truck#star wars#andor#andor season 2 spoilers#andor season 2#they get on of my favorite definitions#which is that there is no actual biological classification or a weed#any plant can be a weed as long as it is considered by one as such#and while the entire world should think of these two as weeds#they do not consider each other weeds and as such#between them#and only them#they are just flowers#syril karn#dedra meero

syrils death was so anticlimactic compared to the others, and that’s saying a lot for Andor. Dedra didn’t see his body fall, Cassian didn’t remember who he was. Just another face in the massacre and if he hadn’t seen Cassian he probably would’ve survived, and come a lot closer to maybe not a redemption, but a grayer area of deflection from the empire and it’s definitely intentional having his story end like that. We’ll never see how Gorman’s massacre would’ve affected him in the long run. He’s another imperial worker just.. gone. And that’s that. And it’s so interesting to me that they showed him having that POTENTIAL to change, that massacre having such an impact on him, having Dedra and the empire LIE so boldly to him like that, and he was about to grow, but he saw Cassian, fought, and died. Because that’s how it is in a war. It’s death, on both sides, and there is no changing that.

“He built up this totem of Cassian, this kind of voodoo doll, and the fact that he wasn’t even a blip on Cassian’s radar is crushing to him. He’s so desperate to be remembered and to make a difference, and it’s a cut too deep by that point. He’s been betrayed by Dedra and the Empire, and now his one true obsession doesn’t even think he’s worth remembering. He’s heartbroken.” - Kyle Soller

cassian’s “who are you?” to syril is not a thanos “i don’t even know who you are” moment. it is not “for me, it was tuesday” or “the axe forgets but the tree remembers”. because cassian didn’t ruin syril’s life. syril upended CASSIAN’S life, and ruined his own in the process. syril stumbled on on the case of two dead beat cops that the empire could not care less about and told him so to his face, but he was so desperate to prove himself as a useful cog in the empire’s machine that he went against his superiors to make a big show out of apprehending someone who was only trying to get back to his normal life. and it goes horribly. syril fucked up, and he’s fired, and he can’t make himself blame the empire so he becomes fixated on andor, his enemy, this big bad master criminal who escaped justice and ruined his life. it’s an obsession. and years later, in the midst of his disillusionment and regret watching the violence on ghorman he helped bring about, he sees him. cassian andor. and all this rage and resentment that’s been boiling under his skin for years overtakes any thought of the innocents dying and he throws himself into fighting cassian with a brutality that is obviously personal. and he almost wins, he has the gun pointed at him, when cassian looks at him with genuine confusion and asks “who are you?” and syril breaks. because he’s spent so long convincing himself that andor is out to get him, and now he sees that this was just as futile as everything else he dedicated himself to. because andor did nothing to him. and he has to die with that realization.
cassian had far more reason to hate syril than the other way around, but syril was completely unimportant to him because he chose the rebellion and love over resentment and the empire

Alright at this point no Star Wars writer other than Timothy Zahn should be allowed to touch Thrawn in current canon. Don't look at him, don't think about him, none of that. Don't even breathe in the blue man's direction. If you don't understand the fundamentals of his character, namely the primary force that drives and motivates him to do things, then do not have him do things!!! Create your own character to be the big bad!! Leave him alone.
#if you find yourself needing to sacrifice pre-established characterization just to make your plot make sense then here's an idea#or at least make the drastic change make sense!!#make a different character#prev tags#thrawn my beloved what are they doing to you#mitth'raw'nuruodo#grand admiral thrawn#star wars
