I don't know who needs this right now, and I know I'm just one voice in a stream of so many others grappling with what's happened over the last 24 hours. But, you should know:

I think there's something that needs to be said about encouraging readers to leave feedback.

For me it's not about "tell me my writing is amazing and stroke my ego"

It's more about "please engage with me so that I can experience your joy secondhand and foster a connection with you"

I understand that not everyone wants this in their reading experience, some people are shy and a million other reasons why maybe someone wouldn't want to engage and that's perfectly fine!

But what I'm trying to steer away from is being a passive content creator with passive consumers. What I want to steer toward is fostering a community that is essential to fandom. I want to see your reactions because it makes me feel like I'm a part of something.

On encouraging reblogs —

I understand that not everyone is comfortable reblogging, especially explicit content. This is ok!

But just consider that the only reason you were able to enjoy a fic or fanart is because someone else shared it, and by not sharing it yourself you are potentially robbing someone else of the opportunity to enjoy it as much as you did.

As OPs our reach only goes so far and this website relies on reblogs in order for anything to truly get seen by a wider audience.

So that's really it! That's why I encourage these two things at the end of every story I post. Not because I'm trying to be demanding and "make people feel bad" if they don't do it.

I know most other social media sites encourage mindless content consumption and that's just the way of the world nowadays, but I am from a time when community was at the heart of fandom and I just don't want to lose that.

As I like to say to many people, most of the time: some of us are ghoulish halloween children from day one, and others grow into it.

I have been a ghoulish halloween child from day one. I hope this is not surprising to anyone, but I also hope none of you mind me taking full advantage of the season while it lasts! So, introducing: OrchidScript's very first giveaway!

Now! In case you’ve never heard of my Mary&George inspired for OR you’d like a refresher — the summary, pulled straight from Ao3:

November 1609: Arthur Fox has passed unexpectedly, leaving his two youngest children without plans for the future. On orders of their grandmother, Bea is sent to the court of James I of England, a seventeen-year-old Henry her escort. After catching the eye of the king, Henry becomes a court favorite, playing advisor, poet, companion, and lover to James. Years later, when a Spanish entourage arrives at the English court, Henry meets Alexander Claremont-Diaz. Faced with the realities of both their positions, will Alex be able to see past Henry's title as The Favorite and love the man underneath, or is their affair doomed from the start?

This copy is what I've been calling my "Henry" copy, inspired by his character throughout the fic -- going from innocent, to jaded, to safe and in love. It features John Everett Millais' painting The Princes in the Tower, one of my all time favorite paintings, as well silver foil vinyl for the lettering. The quote is from the first chapter, Henry's first observations of James I's court at an early winter banquet:

That was all court seemed to be for the moment – a spectacle; men and women clustered and dressed in rigid finery, to play at being Titania and Oberon for a night. And when one was gazing through the haze of candlelight and midnight, who was to see the gaps that made the truth of them?

Forgive me. I felt rather brilliant when I came up with that one ;)

The text is set in columns, meant to be reminiscent of the King James Bible. It seemed fitting considering James I is responsible for this specific iteration of the Bible and the language that defines it.

It also features drop caps, page numbers and section dividers in poppy red -- a feature of some Bibles, or so I am told. (I'm not familiar with more than the standard, so bear with me here). I ALSO went so far as to include the original front leafs from King James' first print run, declaring him as king and that he rewrote it, among other things. Again, another small thematic thing that felt right to include.

Please bear in mind: this book is handmade. I literally cut, sewed, glued, designed, and cased-in this thing by myself at my desk. It's not perfect, not by any stretch, BUT if you've been itching for a tangible copy of this story and didn't want to do that work yourself, this is your opportunity to have one!

Omakase (phrase, Japanese): lit. "I leave it up to you"; method of ordering where the diner requests the "chef's choice." Henry Fox has been laboring under the thumb of legacy and tradition for years, as sous-chef to his brother at Maison Windsor, the restaurant his grandmother made world famous. When a less-than-perfect review of the establishment leaves his creativity not just stymied but totally cut off, he finds fresh inspiration (and something more) in the London's newest and most passionate chef-restaurateur, Alex Claremont-Diaz. After a rough start, their relationship deepens and their reputations intertwine, Henry's confidence in his own abilities renews along with it. When asked to choose between family and creative realization, he finds himself caught.

The entire world has it on video. Alex stumbling forward, straight into Henry’s shoulder, knocking him back into the table and then crumbling to the ground, the cake falling on top of them. Everyone thinks Alex was drunk, or that he hates him, or that he’s immature or unfit for his title, but none of it’s the truth. Everyone’s acting like it’s the end of the world regardless. And maybe, for Alex, it kind of is.

Hi there.

Just wondered what the etiquette is for leaving a comment on someone's story. Are we allowed to write a negative comment or not ?? The reason I ask is because I read a story and was excited for the end but when it came I was slightly disappointed. As I'm no writer myself I didn't leave a comment but then it got me thinking do I or don't I 🤷🤷

hello 💜 i'm not really in the position to say what is 'allowed' and what is not, because i don't have authority over a single thing lol but i can give you my view based on personal experience.

in my opinion, when it comes to leaving comments on fics, it's best to stick to the basic rule of 'if you're not going to say something nice, don't say anything at all'.

if you read something and you don't like it, you can always exit out of the fic and read something else. leaving a negative comment isn't going to make the fic any different - it's just going to make someone feel bad about themselves and their skill.

writing fic is a passion project, and we do it because we want to share our writing with people who love the same media/characters as we do. i would encourage you to approach fic with the same mentality as if a friend gave you a gift. even if you didn't like the gift, you would never tell the friend that because it would probably hurt their feelings, right? the same applies here. you should absolutely use filters, read tags and summaries to give yourself the best reading experience possible and exit out of fics if you don't like them, but don't take away someone's pride in their own work, or make them sad.

i hope this helps (genuinely). when i first migrated from the wild world of ff.net i wasn't sure of the etiquette either (from comments left on my own fics - it was a lawless place 😂)

Quite possibly my favourite RWRB fic. … Okay, don’t quote me on that because the competition is fierce (my Top 5 expanded to Top 10 to Top N because I really cannot rank them anymore—I’ve read too many amazing fics.)

Anything Orchid writes is pure gold, but I felt like this story deserved a cover with two versions.

I read this story relatively early least year (fall of 2023) and I didn’t begin making this cover until March of this year (yes, i’ve been doing this “project” for a while). I initially planned to have just Henry, but I certainly wouldn’t have done the justice, especially with how important Alex’s story and representation is in the story itself. I have both covers uploaded in my Kindle.

I think I read this story at least twice in full, not counting the times i just opened to a random chapter to just drink in the storytelling.

Also a little tidbit; not on the cover itself, but the background in Alex’s mockup is dark blue with gold shimmer—a nod to when Henry first steps into Alex’s restaurant.

This fic is such a fun, fun, fun, fun adventure. The Proposal is one of my favourite romcoms, so when I learned roop was doing an AU, I was ecstatic. I knew I wanted to do this fic justice and make a book cover and can also be hung up like a movie poster (like all the others I’ve posted/will post).

I was debating on doing a full on recreating of the poster, but I did not feel like it would get the vibe. The way the type on the poster also felt like it was taking weight away from Alex and Henry, so I toyed around with the arrangement and the typography until I found an arrangement I was really happy with.

I hope you love the cover/poster, roop! I always put my heart in these little pieces of art and I hope it shows how much fun I had reading yours and how much I wanted to honour it. ❤️🤍💙

I know "60s housewives who invented slash fanfiction" has taken on a life of its own as a phrase, but Kirk/Spock didn't really exist until the 70s and THOSE WOMEN HAD JOBS. They were teachers and librarians and bookkeepers and scientists and they damn well spent their own money going to conventions, printing zines, buying fanart and making fandom happen.
