I know Jiang Cheng's singledom is most often played for laughs but imo it simply has to be personal choice above all other reasons. He's rich, good-looking, a powerful cultivator with good lineage, runs a sect that is fierce and well-protected, has the political acumen to have basically built that sect from scratch as a teenager, half-raised a child from their early toddler years into a fine and upstanding young man/future sect leader, and has a reputation for genuinely hearing out even the most lowly people in society (yes, see people sending Bicao and Sisi to him specifically, and Jiang Cheng absolutely believing them and championing their charge; also see him being the only leader to speak up for the Wens against NMJ/JGS even if it didn't end up working.)

Yes he has a temper but most of his anger we see is directed at people who hurt Jin Ling (intentionally or unintentionally) or are Wei Wuxian (justified imo) or are trespassing in his house (Wen Ning and Lan Wangji.) The one person who we regularly see who must have been consistently in the line of fire of that temper - Jin Ling - doesn't even take it seriously. He contradicts, ignores, and disrespects Jiang Cheng casually because he knows it's all bluster and he is very much loved.

So why was he banned from the matchmakers? I think it's simply because even if he did want to find someone to co-parent Jin Ling and help run Lotus Pier and share his burdens and joys with... he spent his whole childhood scarred by what matchmakers thought would be good for that. Even if he did meet lovely women through the matchmakers, do you think the 'perfection' of the match made him even more terse and terrified? Was his mother not also said to be perfect for his father and vice versa? Did they not make each other miserable? (JFM longing for someone he could never have, YZY longing for the respect she agreed to be owed.)

I think that, both for his sake and for the sake of this hypothetical future bride, he always cut things off himself. Severed the root, found some reason it wasn't perfect. Because perfect failed him. It failed Yanli. It failed Wei Wuxian. He cannot do perfect again. And each matchmaker misunderstands and tries to outdo the next. And that's how thirteen years go by, one man and his nephew half the year at Lotus Pier.

jin ling spoke his first words at jinlintai, not lotus pier, because he was being raised at jinlintai during that time period.

things i am certain would have happened as a result of the above:

jiang cheng found out he missed jin ling's first words. lotus pier then witnessed the worst meltdown ever seen since wei wuxian's death.

Jiang Cheng makes me so sick. What do you mean his entire home was burnt down to the ground. What do you mean he had to rebuild it piece by piece with his own hands because his parents died to save him and his brother. What do you mean he had to watch as his whole family died one by one. What do you mean he had to raise his nephew alone while also juggling trauma and a whole sect to run. What do you mean he has haters who will absolutely ruin his character and write him up as someone who is JUST angry and hateful to Wei Wuxian and everyone who’s just unfortunate enough to be at the receiving end of it
