Sarah knows she’s pretty. She’s got rich dark skin, thick hair, eyes like jewels. If she’s wearing yellow or white, any guy who likes dark-skinned women will stop and have something to say. Brothers who don’t like dark…well, that’s their loss. She’s got some ways to turn a man’s head, but it isn’t like that’s that difficult a thing to do.

All this together means she’s not actually that surprised by Bucky’s attention at the beginning. She sees what they have in common and knows she has a way of cocking her hip that makes men lose their vowels for a second. Plus she can cook. Yeah, men want to come around.

It isn’t the first look that surprises her. Or even the second one. It is the third look.

It is the dancing, respectful but all the hotter for it. The fact that he always asks her if she needs something when he goes into the kitchen. It is the way he drops his eyes like he’s bowing to her. It is the way he listens to her, even when she’s not saying anything important. It is the way he compliments her, gracious and sincere: “My God, Kitten, you look stunning.”

She’s not vain but, Lord Above, if she could hear that every day for the rest of her life she’d be okay.

I’m not big on the institution of marriage, but gahtdammit, I love hearing Rick refer to Michonne as his Wife.

The CINEMATOGRAPHY:

Wesley Cardino was DOP for the middle two episodes of the series, and he did The absolute Thing here.

Not only is this a very intense and atmospheric look and feel for Rick Grimes/Andrew Lincoln in this scene, later in episode 3 when Thorne brings him and Michonne to this same location at night, the way she looks in this light is amazing.

Look. At. Her.

The Director of Photography knew exactly what they needed to do to bring out Michonne/Danai Gurira’s dark brown skin tone in harsh blue service lights of a bombed out stadium. This isn’t moonlight.

In less caring hands/eyes…let’s just say that sometimes it seemed that less care was taken in the mothership than in this show where both Danai and Andrew were hands-on Executive Producers…the lighting would have made her look muddy. There are 3 different skin tones at play in this scene: Rick’s, Thorne’s, and Michonne/Dana’s, and they all look really good.

(BTW, he also DOP’d episode 4, which was written and showran by Danai Gurira. That’s another conversation, because Oooo-WEE!!)

Rick just gets more and more handsome as he ages!

Romeo and Juliet are children.

Rick and Michonne are Grownups. Absolutely Grown and Absolutely Sexy.

They are separated by time and distance. Not “star-crossed”.

There are no parents or familial feuds against their union.

There’s no sneaking away to secretly marry in the middle of their two families feuding.

When Rick is taken away, it’s not to separate him and Michonne because no one wants them together.

No. They’re not close to being Romeo and Juliet.

Rick and Michonne Grimes are THE King and Queen of the Apocalypse.

They are The Ones Who Live.

Other shows try to duplicate this chemistry and adventure, but they simply cannot match the sheer power of Richonne. This is undoubtedly one of the best TV shows of 2024.
