Thinking about the fact that Matt survived a building falling on him, and while he survived, the love of his life- that he just got back from being resurrected into a soulless weapon, died. They wanted to die together, yet Matt survived. Then he found refuge in the place he felt the most alone in his life: the orphanage where his mother cared for him without his knowledge. The basement of a church where he's surrounded by angel statues whilst rejecting religion, forced to be watched under their stone faces. And after a suicide attempt, he has to hear the choir singing above him, surrounded in a tomb of graves in the walls. He is surrounded by death, failure, by religious symbols and sounds. Yet he's supposed to find meaning, challenged by the comments of his mother who tells him not to dwell in selfish "self pity."

i absolutely loved this game, and the show even more <3 so here's a headcanon of how it would be like to date joel miller !

꒰ DATING JOEL MILLER PRE-PANDEMIC ! ꒱

◟where you meet ? i imagine joel would most likely bump into his potential love interest in a bar of some sorts. like, he'd be there with his brother tommy and sees you sitting at the bar by yourself, and wouldn't be able to keep his eyes off of you. but he wouldn't do anything about it, which results in tommy intervening, much to his disagreement. "hey, so my brother's been sitting over there for past thirty minutes just gawking at you. and he was wondering if he could maybe, buy you a drink?"

◟dates ? i don't see him as a 'goes-out-with-his-boo' type of guy, but more like an 'intimate-night-at-home' type of person. where you guys would have a nice candlelit dinner and after watch a movie on his dvd player. i mean it's not much, but he's a simple guy, and considering that he is quite busy all the time. even if you guys aren't at the most bougie restaurant you're together and that's enough for the both of you.

◟fight occurrences ? rare. if you guys fight, it would be because of his jealousy issues, i don't why but i feel like he'd be the jealous type. sue me. and these fights would conclude with you guys not on speaking terms, "i don't want you talking to other men." because of his stubborn ass. until he finally breaks the silence because he misses you.

◟where you meet ? well, he saved you from a zombie attack, which you were very grateful for, however, you didn't have a place to go, since the fireflies had done irreparable damage to your home, therefore you had to tag along with joel. which the last thing he wanted but he wasn't that cold-hearted so he hesitantly agreed. at first, he wouldn't talk that much preferring to be his cold and brooding self, but after a short time he warms up to you and your company is something he starts enjoying.

◟dates ? ... limited, yes. but he tries. for example, your nights would be occupied by listening to the radio, even if the songs playing would be literal messaging signals, and slow dancing in his apartment. yeah, sure the world outside may be going to shit, but when he's with you, he feels a bit of the normalcy he once had and that drives him closer to you.

◟fight occurences ? often. i assume these fights would occur mainly because he would keep secrets from you. like, the things he would partake in which he knew you would be angry or disappointed about, but keeping you in the dark only makes it even worse, so you guys argue.
