Free Consultation at Musee Platinum Tokyo

During my free consultation session, the staff at Musee Platinum Tokyo appeared very busy, with barely enough time to spare as they rushed in and out of the room. The consultation room was sparsely decorated, with minimal furnishings.

I was asked to complete a form and read through their guidelines on what to avoid before and after IPL sessions. Shortly after, the consultant arrived, and we finalised the package without any hard selling tactics.

Despite finalising the package with the consultant, my first session at Musee Platinum Tokyo was not scheduled until three months later.

Musee Platinum Tokyo Unlimited IPL Hair Removal Review

Upon my arrival, I was handed two laminated sheets to read while I waited in the designated waiting area. The area was situated behind frosted glass panels, furnished with numerous chairs that extended to the front counter. In the centre of the waiting area, a rack of Japanese magazines was placed for the customers' perusal.

One of the laminated sheets contained a list of dos and don'ts to be followed before and after the lasering sessions, while the other provided information regarding the company's policy on late or no-show appointments.

As a Japanese company, punctuality is highly valued, and customers who are more than 10 minutes late or fail to show up without prior notice will be charged a fee of S$10. This fee is then donated to charity.

When Should You Postpone or Delay Your IPL Sessions?

According to the long list of reminders, you should postpone your IPL sessions when:

You are feeling ill

On medication on the day of treatment

Consumed alcohol 12 hours before treatment

Vaccination before and after 10 days of treatment

Dry, itchy, flaky skin, wound or scar etc. on the day of treatment

Those who had other treatments such as Laser, IPL or treatments using light technology 2 months before the day of treatment

Pregnant or breastfeeding

Herpes outbreak on the day of treatment

Metals or screw implants in the body

Have done braces on the top and bottom of the teeth (Upper lips and chin treatment cannot be done)

Cosmetic surgery, injection on the treatment area

Bride to be in the same month of treatment

It's worth noting that these guidelines apply specifically to the treatment area. For instance, if you are menstruating, it's advised to avoid booking a bikini line session but an underarm session would still be acceptable.

After a few minutes of waiting, my name was called, and it was time to proceed with the hair removal. I was escorted to a room where I changed into a camisole or gown, depending on my attire that day.

The room’s layout was accurate as of 2019 - before the outlet went through renovations in recent years. 

The room was simply decorated and included a lockable cupboard for storing personal belongings, hangers on the walls for hanging clothes, and advertisements for their latest promotions and skincare products on the white walls. A shelf containing skincare products, linens, and sanitiser was situated in the corner.

The treatment rooms were separated by a curtain partition thus you may hear some voices from the adjoining room, where the laser machine was kept and shared.

Once I had changed and secured my belongings, I placed my shoes under or next to the bed and waited for the staff.

Laser Hair Removal Experience

To prepare for the session, it's recommended that you shave the areas to be treated 2 to 3 days beforehand. In case of missed spots or stubble, the staff will use an electric shaver to remove the hair.

Following the shave, the staff thoroughly cleans the area with a wet wipe before applying the cooling gel. Although they inform you beforehand, the coldness of the gel can still come as a surprise.

Once the gel is applied, it's time to begin the laser treatment. For eye protection, a pair of protective sunglasses are placed over your eyes with tissue paper for hygienic purposes.

Depending on the staff or your mood, some may engage in small talk while others may not.

The square laser head makes contact with your treatment area multiple times, without overlapping the area they’ve treated. The sensation of the laser is not quite like an ant bite, which is often painful. Instead, it feels like a short burst of heat moving methodically on your skin. The cooling gel applied beforehand helps to reduce the heat and sensation, with areas with more gel having lesser sensations.

After the lasering is done, the cooling gel is removed and 2 ice packs are placed under your armpits to cool them down.

Although the protective sunglasses are removed, the tissues remain on your eyes to block the light. You are then left to rest and relax for a while as your treatment areas recover. The entire process, including preparation and lasering, took about 5 minutes.

Aftercare

After a brief moment of daydreaming, the staff returned to remove the ice pack and eye tissues, then applied moisturiser to my armpits. I was instructed to change back into my clothes before checking out and booking my next session at the counter.

The entire process took under 15 minutes and remained consistent during the 3 years I visited, with the occasional promotion or optional skincare products for sale. I only purchased one underarm whitening cream during this time, which seemed to have worked as my armpits were noticeably whiter once I stopped shaving.

Why Did I Stop Going for My Unlimited IPL Hair Removal Sessions at Musee Platinum Tokyo?

Over the course of three years, I underwent 17 IPL hair removal sessions, scheduled two to three months apart depending on the salon's availability. To secure a slot closer to your desired date, it's best to book odd-time sessions like weekday mornings or afternoons. Weekends are typically fully booked, with wait times of up to four months between sessions.

I must say that I had an amazing deal with the salon, only paying S$30 for what felt like hundreds of dollars worth of hair removal sessions. Being a student with irregular lesson timings, I had the advantage of booking more frequently and utilising my unlimited hair removal sessions to the fullest. After doing the maths, it seemed like I paid only S$1+ per session, which is a huge bargain compared to the standard rates.

During my three-year period, the salon upgraded its machine to a more effective one. However, being a student at the time, I declined the offer to upgrade and continued with the old machine, which I found to be just as effective.

But as they say, all good things come to an end. Eventually, after graduation, travelling across the country to Plaza Singapura became an inconvenience, prompting me to stop going to the salon altogether instead of availing myself of the one-time transfer of salons as stated on their website.

Do I Still Have Hair Under My Arms Now?

Before starting laser hair removal, I had to shave my underarms daily due to my insane hair growth. However, after the second or third session, I began to notice a significant reduction in hair growth, and I no longer needed to remove hair that often. Over time, some spots on my underarms became bald, while others had very long but sparse hair.

As the amount of hair continued to reduce, I eventually stopped shaving altogether, and my underarms became noticeably fairer. By the end of my 17 sessions, I only had around 10 strands of hairs left in total on both underarms. Since the hairs were thin, I chose to pluck them out every few months instead of shaving.

How IPL Hair Removal Changed My Life 

This experience was a significant confidence booster for me. Even though I never showed it, I was very insecure about my armpits due to the amount of hair and sweat that gathered there. This was why I avoided wearing clothes with sleeves and shaved daily, even though it made my underarms darker. Discovering that IPL could solve this problem for me through a cost-effective course made me ecstatic.

While I understand that the downtime between sessions and scheduling appointments could be inconvenient for some, it worked out well for me. I appreciated that the staff never pressured me into buying anything during my visits, making the process smooth and stress-free. It was the perfect process for me as all I wanted was a quick IPL session before moving on to my next task.

It's been four years since my last IPL session, and the results have been long-lasting. Thanks to the effectiveness of the treatment, I now only have a few sparse hairs left in my underarms which I pluck out every few months to keep my underarms smooth and hair-free.

While these hairs are so thin that they are not visible from a distance, I prefer to keep my underarms completely hair-free for my own personal preference. This has greatly improved my confidence and overall comfort, and I no longer need to worry about daily shaving or underarm hair growth.

Additionally, my armpits are now lighter in tone and match the rest of my body, which is the best result anyone could ever ask for.

Manual Toothbrush vs Mola Sonic+ Toothbrush

To thoroughly try out the effectiveness of the Mola Sonic+ Toothbrush, I embarked on an experiment. I compare the effectiveness of a manual toothbrush versus the Mola Sonic+ Toothbrush with the help of a pink disclosing tablet. The disclosing tablet is used to make dental plaque visible and thus allowing the results to be recorded more accurately.

Before Brushing with a Manual Toothbrush

In the before photo, you can visibly see the plaque in every nook and cranny of my teeth. I have been a manual toothbrush user till now and I often find it hard to get unwanted food debris and plaque out of my mouth due to my uneven teeth. Although I do floss, I still find it hard to thoroughly cleanse my mouth especially on and around the molar teeth.

Although my teeth look superficially clean, you can see the remains of the disclosing tablets in between my teeth, near the gum line. The results also highlight my prediction on how a manual toothbrush is unable to thoroughly clean my molars.

Sunnystep Balance Runner - Women

Since I am suffering from flat feet, I got the Sunnystep Balance Runner. The difference between the Balance Runner and Balance Walker is the laces. Balance Runner comes with laces while Balance Walker comes without.

You can jog in both of these shoes but Balance Runner is recommended if you are going to jog for a long distance given the option to tighten up your shoes with the laces.

Similar to the other shoes in the brand, the Balance Walker and Balance Runner come with Sunnystep’s proprietary insoles which are removable and easily cleaned. Extra velvet cushioning is incorporated at the heels so that wearers can have a blister-free experience. There is also an additional ultra-anti-shock gel cushioning at the heels and the ball of the foot.

The uppers of the shoes are also buttery soft and flexible allowing them to adapt to different foot shapes easily. Plus, the shoes are slightly lightweight, anti-microbial and anti-odour.

Sunnystep Balance Runner Review

I chose the gold Sunnystep Balance Runner for a more vibrant addition to my wardrobe. The shoes have a clean and versatile look with no visible logo and eyelets. The only time you can see the logo is at the sides of the shoes where it is camouflaged at the midsoles.

The moment I put my weight on the insoles, I could feel the acupressure massage points gently massaging my feet, alleviating the strain off it. The gel cushioning at various parts of the foot helps support the front and back of the foot whereas the toe box gives my toes ample space to wiggle around.

Initially, I thought my feet would not be able to adapt to the massage points. After some time, my feet acclimatise to the different pressure points and I no longer pay attention to them. On the contrary, these massage points help massage my feet as I walk.

These shoes are lightweight and breathable, making them great for running or walking long-distance. The outsole bottoms come with deep grooves to increase friction. However, you should still be careful when walking on wet or oily surfaces.

Normally, the back of my heels will be irritated or filled with painful blisters after a day of walking in covered shoes but Sunnystep Balance Runner made that an issue I no longer have to face. The materials used in the shoes are soft enough that my feet were blister-free even after exploring Singapore for a full day.

All in all, Sunnystep Balance Runner is a great shoe to wear as your everyday wardrobe staple. They are great for those with arch issues and pregnant women. The materials on the shoes are also soft enough for you to go without socks and the acupressure points are a great way to relieve your tired feet while walking. Te Pa Tū (Previously Tamaki Maori Village)

Located in Rotorua, Te Pa Tū or previously known as the Tamaki Maori Village is a place of culture where visitors can experience and learn more about authentic Māori culture. While I was there, I experienced the Tamaki Maori Village Cultural Experience. I get to watch the Māori warriors present to us the haka (Māori war dance), partake in a pōwhiri (Māori welcoming ceremony), and enjoy a delicious hangi meal.

Te Puia

Hemo Road, Tihiotonga, Rotorua 3010, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand

Home to the largest active geyser in the Southern Hemisphere, Te Puia spans 70 hectares within the Te Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley. It houses the Pōhutu geyser, mud pools, hot springs and silica formations. Additionally, Te Puia is home to the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute where they train the next generation of artists from around the country.

While you’re in the thermal valley, you get to watch the Pōhutu geyser erupt hourly at heights of up to 30m. You also get to sit in the warm stone seats that warm you up during Autumn and Winter.

Agrodome

Founded in 1971, Agrodome is a farm theme park where visitors can interact with animals and watch a sheep shearing show. Agrodome sits on 350 acres of farmland, where visitors can enjoy the panoramic views of Lake Rotorua while getting a tour of the farm. You can spot cattle, alpacas, llamas, horses, goats, deer, donkeys and many other animals in the vicinity.

While I was there, I explored the vicinity and experienced an entertaining farm show where I watched how they shear the sheep.

Hobbiton the Movie Set

501 Buckland Road, Matamata, New Zealand

Experience the real Middle-earth with a visit to the Hobbiton Movie Set, featured in The Lord of the Rings film trilogy and The Hobbit film trilogy. Situated on a family-run farm, the Hobbiton Movie Set is covered with Hobbit holes and knick-knacks from the movie sets.

Besides photographing yourself with the Hobbit holes, you can grab a drink at the Green Dragon Inn, check out the mill or dance around the Party Tree. This magical place, as expected, requires one to travel two hours to reach if you're coming from Auckland.

Waitomo Glowworm Caves

39 Waitomo Village Road, Waitomo, Waitomo Caves, New Zealand

Home to the Arachnocampa Luminosa, a glow worm species found exclusively in New Zealand, the Waitomo Glowworm Caves is an attraction located on the North Island of New Zealand. The cave walls are made of limestone that is composed of fossilised corals, seashells, fish skeletons, and many small marine organisms.

There are three levels to the cave: the top level of the cave and the Catacombs, the Banquet Chamber, and the Cathedral. On the deepest level, visitors can board a boat at the jetty which takes them through the Glowworm Grotto. While riding the boat, the only light source in the cave comes from the tiny glow worms. Take note that you have to remain silent as the boat passes through the area and no photography or videography is allowed.

Auckland War Memorial Museum

Parnell, Auckland 1010, New Zealand

Auckland War Memorial Museum stands on the remnant of the ancient volcano Pukekawa. It was built in 1929 to commemorate the fallen heroes from the war. This museum is regarded as one of the finest Museums in the Southern Hemisphere and is renowned for its unique collection of Māori and Pacific treasures. In the museum, you can find the Māori treasures gallery displaying over 2,000 priceless Māori artefacts.

Domain Wintergardens

Wintergarden Road, Parnell, Auckland 1010, New Zealand

A stone’s throw away from Auckland War Memorial Museum is Domain Wintergardens. Considered to be a treasure of great historic interest, the Domain Wintergardens was constructed in the early 1900s. The garden was designed in the style of the English partnership of Edwin Lutyens and Gertrude Jekyll.

Initially, only the Temperate House was built but later in the 1920s, the courtyard, the Tropical House, and the Fernery were added. The Wintergardens officially opened to the public in 1928.

Presently, the Domain Wintergardens consists of two glasshouses containing temperate plants and tropical plants. In between these glasshouses, there’s a formal courtyard with a pond and a fernery within an old quarry.

Eden Garden

24 Omana Ave, Epsom Auckland, New Zealand 

Situated on Mt Eden, Eden Garden sits on a former rubbish-filled quarry land. After the quarry was converted, the garden was opened to the public in 1964. You can find many collections of plants in the garden including the largest collection of camellias in the country. There’s even a waterfall and an interesting rock formation there.

Parnell Rose Garden

The Dove-Myer Robinson Park, more commonly known as Parnell Rose Garden, was named after the longest-serving mayor of Auckland, Dove-Myer Robinson. The garden has over 5,000 roses and it is a popular attraction in Parnell. The white garden is a popular venue for weddings.

Auckland Zoo

Motions Road, Auckland 1022, New Zealand

Opened in 1922, Auckland Zoo is a not-for-profit wildlife conservation organisation. It is the biggest zoo in New Zealand. It is home to over 135 different species and over 1,400 animals. There are many rare animals in the zoo such as the brown kiwi and the Tasmanian devil.

A unique feature that I like is their stamping stations. Visitors can fill up their maps with the unique stamps found around the zoo.

SkyCity Auckland

Victoria Street West, Auckland CBD, Auckland 1010, New Zealand

Skycity Auckland is an entertainment complex that houses the Sky City Theatre, a casino, the Sky Tower, a convention centre and a hotel. The Sky Tower stands 328m above ground and it provides 360° views of Auckland. It is the tallest freestanding structure in the Southern Hemisphere.

There are 60 levels to the tower and the upper portion of the tower contains two restaurants and a café. You can also go bungee jumping or walk around the exterior of the tower on level 53. There are also areas on the floor where you can see through to the ground.

Depending on when you visit New Zealand, do take note of the time the sun sets and the opening hours of the shops for the stores may not open as long as you expect them to – especially if you come from the city.

If you are trying to visit another city and you can’t drive, tour buses are a good option for the roads turn pitch black when darkness falls. Although that means you can see the stars more clearly, it can be scary for drivers who are not used to driving without street lights.
