Despite everything, Mary knew that she was lucky. Even though the other girls’ screams echoed in her brain endlessly, and she had nightmares about those cages and those heads sticking out of the ground, she was lucky. None of that had happened to her, and she lived a fairly easy life on the island. Sure it was mostly thanks to Alec, but she liked to think that she had to have at least a little strength in her to be able to push past the survivor’s guilt that plagued her day in and day out.
She was starting to feel protective too, of her newfound happiness hunting with the king himself. Did she feel bad for killing animals? Of course she did. But Vaas had promised that it wouldn’t go to waste, and she trusted him. It would be alright, that’s just how things were here sometimes. Food was a necessity, and the skin was useful too. Besides, there would always be more pigs, right? Not like killing one would stop the entire population from breeding and growing, pigs were all over the island.
Spotting the far off pigs in the distance, Mary hummed softly to herself. She knew it from experience— if you tried to sneak up on them, even just one wrong move would send them all in ten different directions and you’d never catch up. Actually, she had witnessed it with some strange guy trying to hunt with an SMG, but the whole situation had been so strange that she’d written it off as him being high on something and moved on fairly quickly. To be honest she’s pretty sure she’s seen that guy a couple of times, but he’s always doing something distinctly strange. Like trying to snipe sharks and then nearly drowning himself to go skin them at the bottom of the ocean floor.
When she turns to look at Vaas he’s crouching, and so she does the same to see what he’s pointing out. A nod when he asks if she sees the tracks, and a soft “oh” leaves her at the information. Briefly she glances around at the area, to try and remember it so that she might come back sometime. “That might be something useful to mark on a map.” She muses softly, wondering about the practicality of having a map that shows animals gathering places. Before her thoughts get too far away though she notices the pigs appearing, and shifts slowly from crouching to taking a knee. Terrible, she really did love pigs. They were just so cute and made the most precious little noises— but, she really shouldn’t think about it right now.
Setting her jaw, Mary nods at Vaas’ urging. Carefully, quietly, she pulls a broadhead arrow from the quiver on her hip and nocks it into place. Her hands steady, she clears her head as best as she can and takes aim, following the pigs movement for a couple of seconds. Vaas can faintly hear her inhale as she draws the string back, and exhale as she releases and lets the arrow zip away. Aimed just behind the front arm the arrow finds its perfect mark, making an almost snapping sound as it punctures the creature’s flesh. The smaller pigs scatter, and the big one runs just a few feet before it collapses dead. Her bow finally lowers, and she looks away from the fallen animal as quickly as she can, to give Vaas a small apologetic smile. “I just kind of assumed you might want the bigger one... is that okay?”
" Whats this, huh? Thought Alec lost his daughter when she was but a small baby. You...You...I don't think we have meet before, have we? "
Red, lots of red. Like an animal showing off it’s venom, warning others to stay away. It was all too glaringly obvious— the color, the weaponry, this was a pirate that stood before her. Great, Alec would just be thrilled when he heard about this one.
Honestly unsure of what the other meant about Alec losing his daughter, Mary tried to gloss over it as she offered a kind smile and a dip of her head in greeting. “I don’t think we have, sir. I’m Agnes.” Hands once folded in front of her, one is now extended to the other as a pleasantry. The other could kill her in an instant, drag her back to those terrible cages— but why would any pirate do that to their dealer’s daughter? The thought comforted her, even if just a little bit.

Growing up as a loner, Mary had never known someone with whom she could share her hobbies and interests. But this? Here with Vaas? She finally felt like she was able to connect with someone, even just a little bit. Naïve, she already trusted the pirate king. She didn’t even want to lie to him about who she really was anymore, but it’s not like she had much of a choice. Would he think differently of her if he found out who she really was? And worse, what if Alec found out? The idea made her stomach twist up in a way that she hated.
“Yeah, hunting buddies! I’ve never had one before, I bet we could have a lot of fun together.” Already her head was filling up with endless possibilities for the two of them. It’s as if Vaas had finally opened her eyes to the island’s many possibilities for the very first time. “Plant life too? That’s so kind of you! I’d love to learn anything you’re willing to share.” An eager nod, something in the back of her head told her that she should be astonished. Vaas was not known to be kind, nor a teacher, and yet here they were. She kept having to tell herself that it wasn’t a dream.
Mary’s relationship with Alec was complicated, to say the least. On the outside they were alright, they liked each other and deep down they both felt like they needed the other. But Alec was overprotective to the point of almost being obsessed. He wasn’t above locking her inside of her room for a couple days... Still, Mary wondered if she had to take some of the blame for letting it develop like that. In the beginning she had been so frightened, of course she would play along with anything he told her— even playing the role of his daughter. She had told herself it made sense, that people would be a little more hesitant to mess with the daughter of the island’s only physician. Was there more to it that she just hadn’t seen back then?
“You will?” It was hard not to trust Vaas when he spoke so surely of himself. And besides, he was the big boss— Alec was sure to listen to him more than her. “Thank you, I’m sure he’ll be more inclined to hear it from you.” Still, Alec was a fickle man. When it came to his “daughter” he’d do anything to not lose her again. Even if that meant going against the big bad pirates.
Mary nods to what Vaas says. “I’m sure you’re right, it is a good idea.” Laughing then, she turned to give Vaas a look of fake disappointment. “Aww really? We can’t wrestle down any tigers today? Darn. I was lookin forward to that part.” Before long she could hear the pigs, and turned her head towards the sound. Carefully, she removes her bow from her back, to hold it in her hand as they grow closer. The non-predators on this island were pretty fickle from what she’d seen. One wrong move or noise and they’d all scatter.

“Nobody told me he was so nice! I think it must just be the stories people tell got blown out of proportion. Oh! Thank you!” A bright smile as she gratefully takes the fruit, running her thumbs over the flesh to get a feel for the texture before beginning to peel it.
“He came up to the house just the other day. Apparently someone had seen me practicing my archery out in the yard, and he’d come to check things out. Alec had been called out to Badtown so he wasn’t home... he still doesn’t really know. But you know how he is. I’m just... waiting. For the right time to tell him. I’ll have to soon though, Vaas wants to go on a hunting trip and Alec might freak if I just up and disappeared for a few days.”
“Have you meet Vaas yet? He’s so lovely!”
“Of course I have.” Charley pulls a couple of mangoes out of his bag, passing one to Mary. He wasn’t sure he’d call Vaas lovely - maybe diabolical or sinister, but lovely? Not so much. He wanted to ask if it wasn’t Vaas that has tortured and killed all of her friends - but instead he started peeling the fruits.
“When did you meet him? Thought Alec had you locked up tight. All those don’t-talk, don’t-look, don’t even breathe in the presence of anyone lest they notice you rules.”

A one in a million pair, what might the other pirates think if they saw the two of them together? For once Mary wasn’t so worried about the patrols roaming the island. She felt safer with Vaas here, and a lot less lonely too. Surely Vaas was a busy guy, being the head of such a big operation, but she found herself really hoping that they could see each other more after this.
Blue eyes blink at the compliment as they begin to walk together, Mary offers a giggle and an almost sheepish smile. “You think so? Well now I might really have to find one, if you think I’d be adorable.” Why did people paint him as such a bad guy? Vaas was lovely! It was so easy here by his side, to forget all of her worries. As ironic as it may be, he even made her forget those girls from so long ago, even if just for a moment.
Maybe Vaas could even help her get more accustomed to hunting. It was a useful skill to have in a place like this, and if he could help her get over the guilt of killing an animal, she’d be all the more better off for it. She could even take some of it home to Alec for dinner, sometimes. That one was a bit of a stretch, but it was a pleasant thought anyway.
Looking at Vaas as he speaks, Mary nods along to his words. “You sound like the perfect hunting buddy to me!” She can’t stop smiling, maybe they really would get to be together more. “You would really do all that just for me? I’d love it if you taught me! To be honest it’s pretty easy to feel overwhelmed here sometimes, but if I know how to conquer the animals then that’s one less thing to worry about.” She watches as he throws the rock, seeing how far away it lands. “If you wanted, maybe I could teach you some things too! You probably know a lot more than me though... have you ever done axe throwing before? It can be kinda fun.”
Eyes grow wide, and she turns to give Vaas an excited grin. “A hunting trip? That sounds fun! Ah—“ Her excitement tapers off when he mentions Alec though, and she gives a small sigh as her shoulders slump. “Yeah. That might be a problem. Don’t get me wrong I love Alec but he treats me like a little girl. Like I’m not capable of doing things on my own. I was just barely able to convince him to let me have a bow at all.” Mary’s head turns towards the ground then, and her voice drops. “He’s probably going to freak when he finds out about this, but it’s not like any of this is bad! You’re so nice, and I really like your company, I just wish... that he’d trust me a little more, y’know?”
" Whats this, huh? Thought Alec lost his daughter when she was but a small baby. You...You...I don't think we have meet before, have we? "

Her mind made up wether she had realized it or not, Mary liked the Pirate King. He was kind so far, seemingly the complete opposite of what everyone had made him out to be. Subconsciously she relaxes in his presence, body language more open than it had been when she first learned who he was. None of the fear remained, the only thing she’d have to be nervous about was how Alec might react when he found out who she’d spent her day with. But that was something to worry about later.
“Robin Hood, huh? Maybe I should get a hat with a feather in it then. Maybe cassowary, if I’m feeling lucky.” All playful, she had been craving this kind of interaction for so long now. Was it even possible for her to become friends with one of the most infamous people on the island? It certainly seemed like it with the way things were going now. Her lonely mind supplied fantasies of lounging on the beach together, talking and swapping stories for hours... but it wasn’t right to feel that way, was it? After what had happened to those other girls. Maybe this could be the moving on Alec had been encouraging lately...
Surprisingly, she had killed animals before. On the island, at least. It was a new challenge at first but she had eventually made it easy, like everything else she put her mind to. Besides, it’s not like she went out just killing things left and right. There were many times she’d been attacked by animals here, and self defense was a must. Bullets might do better, but a perfectly placed arrow did wonders too.
When Vaas makes up his mind she nods, glancing down to check how many arrows are in her quiver. She’d only really need one, but who’s to say that something wouldn’t come up? “Sure, that sounds fine to me.” When she raises her head again she notices that excited sparkle in his eyes, and can’t help but to grin in return. There was just something so contagious about his energy... “But you’ve got to take me there, too. I know where most of the fun stuff is, but I’m not too well versed in most of the hunting areas. All I really know is that there are a ton of boars and mountain lions over here.” A roll of her eyes is paired with a small laugh, surely he knew what nuisances those could both be.
" Whats this, huh? Thought Alec lost his daughter when she was but a small baby. You...You...I don't think we have meet before, have we? "

Alec had told her what happened to the people in the camps. She had been asking about her friends, too restless in her earlier days here. She thought she had needed to know, but it only made the nightmares worse. Made their screams echoing in her skull louder. They hadn’t known either when they were first taken. As she watched from the jungle like a coward— But that... was of no importance, right now. So long as she stayed on her toes with Vaas, it wouldn’t happen to her, too. She was fine.
Vaas really wasn’t so bad though, she had a hard time connecting the man before her to the evil Pirate Lord she’s been told about. He could be putting on a mask, much like she was, but why would he care so much? Sure if he’d hurt her he would have hell to pay with Alec, but being rough around the edges was just something to be expected from him. Maybe it was one of those times when the stories became more scary than the person themself. Overall she was actually starting to enjoy his company, she hasn’t been able to talk to anyone in a little over two years now other than Alec. So despite herself, Mary couldn’t help but to feel warmly about the interaction.
Laughing along with him, Mary has to stop herself from reaching out to playfully push the other’s shoulder. “Oh I know I don’t look like much but you’d be surprised! Back in the states I was winning all kinds of archery competitions. I even did a little axe throwing, from time to time.” It was hard to imagine for someone as small and delicate looking as she was, but the way she spoke had such an air of truth about it. She really didn’t think much of telling him some of her real past, she didn’t honestly believe that he could ever use it in figuring out who she really was.
“Yeah, I’m always looking for ways to pass the time.” Doe eyes blink at that playful expression though, and she can’t help but to tilt her own head in response, smile bright and eager to hear his suggestion. But when his suggestion actually comes, her smile falters a bit. “Oh, real animals? I mean, I do get tired of the same boards, but...” But she’d feel so bad for hurting an animal. She’d feel bad for hurting anything but hunting was normal, right? Besides, she was inclined to not turn him down. “Well... alright, we can hunt some animals. Just on one condition though? I don’t want it to go to waste. So pick an animal you can use, okay?”
" Whats this, huh? Thought Alec lost his daughter when she was but a small baby. You...You...I don't think we have meet before, have we? "

“Wh— ATTACK you?! I asked if you wanted pain medicine you psycho! You know you got that from those other people you killed!” Feeling her own rage rising, mixing together with her adrenaline to make a toxic cocktail of nerves, Mary bristled in her own skin. It wasn’t fair, she felt so powerless. What could she do? Pray for a miracle, pray for some higher power to give her the strength to murder all of these stupid FUCKING pirates in cold blood. She’d do it in a heartbeat, too. But she was small, and defenseless, and all alone.
Growling as the pirate approached her to tie her up, reduced to something a bit more feral than the usually sweet girl she was known to be. And despite the warnings, she fought against him as he grabbed her, trying to wrench her arms away but to no avail. “Yeah?! Then you’d better kill me because there’s no way I’d want to go back with you idiots! Go ahead! Shoot me dead, jerks!” A harsh statement for someone so reserved, despite its PG rating. But she really did mean every word— she’d rather die than go back to that terrible place.
Still struggling, trying to push back against the pirate behind her with gritted teeth, Mary falters as Carlos addresses her. Button nose scrunching up in a mix of disgust and rage, she tried her best to glare daggers into his soul. “You must be really stupid, huh? To just believe whatever one person says without a second thought. Alec warned me about you pirates. Dirty, disgusting jerks who only think about drugs and money!” She no longer cared if they killed her, she’d honestly prefer it. “I didn’t hurt her, but she deserves it. Maybe all of you do. I hope that Jason gets around to every last one of you.”
“ are you hurt ? ” (for Beth)

The way in which she was hunched, BLOOD seeping through her vest and crimson upon the palm of her left hand would indicate as such for others, but for Beth? NO.
The dead Rakyat a few feet away had BARELY managed to get the blade into her, meaning there was no stitches needed, it wouldn't leave a scar, and it'd merely need a plaster or two. Disinfecting. A BOTHERSOME thing as opposed to deadly.

"Back thE FUCK OFF!" Yelling mid-sentence, despite her pain, the pirate straightened and harshly pointed to the other, "Any weapons on the fucking ground, hands in the FUCKING AIR, or your fucking NEXT!"

The look was brief, fleeting as she didn’t want to open herself up too much for the pirate to see. Keep it kind but closed off, you could never be too careful with someone so dangerous. Or at least... that’s what Alec had said. So far, Vaas has been nothing but kind to her, if not a bit curious. He didn’t... seem completely insane. He wasn’t cursing every other word like Alec had said either. Maybe he’d been mistaken? Still, it never hurt to stay on her guard.
A small nod is offered. “Dad tried to teach me everything he could about the islands. I’m not supposed to go too far, and actually... I’m really not supposed to talk to anyone, either. But it’s okay, you seem... nice.” Surprisingly. Probably deceivingly. Of course, she hadn’t been following the rules very well recently anyway. Her most recent excursion had her squealing excitedly as she dove off of the cenote, which was quite a far walk from the house. But it was fine, so long as she was back before dinner and came back unharmed, then Alec wouldn’t freak out.
“Oh? Alright then, I’m sure he’d like the company.” Not really, knowing the pirate king was coming around would probably freak him out, but Alec was always at least a little nervous anyway. Expecting that to be the end of the interaction, long lashes flutter as Vaas expresses wanting to hang around. An archer? Oh, gee, had someone caught sight of her practicing? Pink cheeks flush ever so slightly brighter, and her smile grows sheepish. “Oh, an archer? It’d probably be me. I dunno if I really live up to the hype or anything though.”
Her head turns then, stealing a glance towards the back of the house. “If that’s really what you want to see though... I set up a bit of a practicing range in the back, if you’re interested.” Showing off wasn’t something she particularly enjoyed, but how could she deny Vaas of all people? Besides, this might be a chance to get on his good side, if he had one. Maybe he’d enjoy getting to see some of her more impressive shots.
" Whats this, huh? Thought Alec lost his daughter when she was but a small baby. You...You...I don't think we have meet before, have we? "
