This past week (and a half) I listened to Hot Freak's self-titled album (2012)
Tumblr media
⭐️⭐️⭐️(3 out of 5 stars)
I liked this album a lot. This was a good final album before the events that will happen next week (Taylor...). This album was recommended by my lovely girlfriend and so I had to give it a listen. I ended up enjoying it independent of the source of recommendation. It has midwest emo adjacent vibes and so I was obviously going to enjoy it..
I gave myself a little more time on this album one, because I was working retail right before Christmas and two, I continually forgot to update this.
Opinion time! (as always, not opinion order, just album order)
"Write Me Letters" I don't love putting the first songs on albums in my top 3 but this deserves it. I think it is very much a very blunt start to the album but I love it. The drums here are very nice and crispy and I am a big fan. I am a fan of the fact that in the first chorus, most of the band drops out and leaves the piano, I think it adds a really cool element as the band is able to come back in. I enjoy how the second verse serves as a B section and this whole song really scratches my brain.
"Outset Island" Now this is the song that should prove I'm not just glazing this album for being recommended by my girlfriend. She hates this song. I love this song so much!!! I am a big fan of musical storytelling. The guitar tone on this song is also so tasty and I think this is a great song.
"Baby Boy" More musical storytelling!! I love this song a lot for its chorus. it is really catchy and I am a fan. This song also has such a tasty outro and I LOVE how they layer the vocals at the very end.
Honorable mentions!! 🥳🥳🥳
"Boo" I like the arrangement of this song a lot. I love the guitar, I love the bass, and the chorus is catchy.
"Hsbf" I am a BIG fan of the slower tempo of this song. It sounds big and nasty and I'd love to hear this out of some MASSIVE speakers. I'm sure this goes crazy live. The instrumental on this song is SO GOOD. 10/10 this song was so nearly top 3.

This past week I listened to GNX by Kendrick Lamar
Tumblr media
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(5 out of 5 stars)
I liked this album a lot. This album and DAMN. This year has pretty solidly cemented me as a fan of Kendrick's. I think he is a brilliant artist and he has really honed his craft and carved out his place in the industry.
His albums have amazing storytelling, and this is no exception. This is a stand out among the best albums this year IMO.
Opinion time! (as always, not opinion order, just album order)
"man at the garden" This album stands out to me as an album about hard work and "deserving it all". This song doesn't have a crazy beat or anything. It's mostly dreamy ambient music. The lyrics are obviously where this song stands out. I think this song is just beautiful and a great testament to hard work.
"reincarnated" the piano riff, from the very start, is very catchy and I like that it moves around. I like how the muted guitar is added in during the instrumentals. I love the call and response when he's telling the story of his father, it is such a cool little piece of this song and I love it. The conversation then with God is so amazing and I like that he layers his voice multiple times to make it sound the way that it does.
"gloria" I mean, I had to pick at least one of the tracks with SZA. I just think this song is so beautiful. It's obviously amazing to have two of the best musicians in their respective genres make a song together. I LOVE the culminating chorus so much. It is gorgeous. This song is much more heavily mixed and it is such a brilliant way to end off the album.
Honorable mentions!! 🥳🥳🥳
"hey now (feat. Dody6)" this one has my favorite beat and the synth is super cool as the song develops.
"heart pt. 6" I think this song is so beautiful to show the story of his career. I think it sounds so cool and it's got a great story behind it. There's a lot of little lyrics that are so clever and they make me so happy. I am a big fan of the chorus on this one too.
"gnx feat. Hitta J3, YoungThreat, & Peysoh", the titular track always has to be good, I am a fan of the motif of "tell 'em X did it." I also love how all of their voices contrast and work together.

This past week and a bit I listened to "A Very 1999 Christmas" by Jschlatt
Tumblr media
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(5 out of 5 stars)
Yes, I am quite biased, 5 out of 5 does seem excessive; but it's holiday music and it's fun. I've never really just listened to a Christmas album, and this one was a lot of fun.
I think the way that this album was conceived is absolutely batshit and hilarious and the end result is very good for a Minecraft youtube.
I'm not gonna go super in-depth since this is already late AND its a short album AND it's Christmas music, this stuff has already been done before.
I still liked this album a lot and it will probably remain in my Christmas rotation this year; next year though, is a question for next year...
Opinion time! (as always, not opinion order, just album order)
"Baby, It's Cold Outside" I'm not usually a fan of this song, it's always felt a little creepy, but I particularly like this recording. I think Schlatt's voice contrasts the woman's voice really nicely and it's ultimately a classic that is done really well here.
"White Christmas" This is the song I hoped for the most on this album. It suits Schlatt's voice super well. This song also has very tasty instrumentals and I'm a big fan. I love the larger choir that's added as the song finishes out, it allows for this song to be taken much more seriously than without it.
"Happy Holidays" This song definitely is not one that I've heard a ton growing up. I think it is a great song and it makes me very happy and just makes me want to dance along. The brass and drums here are absolutely amazing and mixed with that man from New York, this song just has such a full and rich sound.

This week I listened to "Flood" by Hippo Campus
Tumblr media
⭐️⭐️(2 out of 5 stars)
This album definitely was not a favorite for me. It feels very much like a lot of indie/at rock at the moment. It isn't at all bad, the production is incredibly good, there is a lot of good guitar things going on, but it very much blends into the noise of a lot of pop-alternative at the moment and nothing really stood out to me.
I feel like I don't have a whole lot to say on this album. It is pretty ok, and that is about it for me.
Opinion time! (as always, not opinion order, just album order)
"Everything At Once" this song has great guitar. This by far has one of the most catchy choruses. I am a bigger fan of the singing on this song. The pre-chorus is also so tasty. This is one of my favorites by far. I love the way the song ends in that it goes really quiet and then it goes really loud. I am also a big fan of the drums on this one, they are very full, and they add a lot to this song and I enjoy it very much.
"Slipping Away" I like the drums on this one too. I like how the chorus swaps from "Slipping away" to "Passing away" and then back to "Slipping away" I think that's a neat way to use a chorus and I think more songs should do that. This song has quite a dreamy sound and I am quite the fan.
"Forget It" I'm a big fan of the lyrical rhythms in this song. They are cool and neat and I am a fan. Otherwise, this song is a more typical alternative song, it is still a great vibe and is one of the better songs on the album.
Honorable mentions!! 🥳🥳🥳
"Flood," I think is a fabulous titular track. I didn't want to put this as top three because, I don't love to just put a spotlight on songs people already are going to listen to. It is a great song and I love her. It has great drums and the melody is so good.
This album was quite nice but I will not be returning to her. Sayonara!

This week I listened to "Persona" by half•alive
Tumblr media
⭐️⭐️⭐️(3.5 out of 5 stars)(yet again, there is still no half star emoji :P)
That may seem like a really low rating given how hyped I was for this album, but it is not my favorite by half•alive. I have been a really big fan of this band since 2018 when "still feel." came out and after the double album in 2022, the wait for this album felt really long and ultimately lackluster to be harsh. I still love half•alive and I still really enjoyed this album, I just feel like I got my hopes up really high. I also think "Conditions Of A Punk" just holds such a special place within my life, so nothing will ever live up to her. I still love "Persona" I just got too hyped.
Opinion time! (as always, not opinion order, just album order)
"People" This song has such a full instrumental intro, I was a fan right off the bat. I love the first pre-chorus so much; It does a brilliant job of building up the song. I think this song uses dynamics so well and that is usually something I can always say about half•alive, but I especially enjoy it on this song. Otherwise, I love songs about being human, I think the whole idea is so sweet and pure. At the end of the day, we're just a bunch of people. And I absolutely love how it goes straight into "Bleed It Out"-
"Bleed It Out" This song picks up right off of "People" and I love it just as much. This is classic half•alive, with beefy bass and cool guitar effects. I love how the verses and chorus contrast with how full the instrumentation is between each other. I mostly just love this song for its guitar melodies, it's so cool and a very good modern alternative song. I also like the lyrics here, not as much as "People" but they're still good. Very good, communication is great in relationships. I like that this is a love song but not necessarily romantic or platonic.
"Songs (feat. Jordana)" This song on the other hand is very much romantic. Their voices work together so well on this song it is just beautiful. I do love this song for the guitar. It is such a nice fingerstyle part. I was a big fan of the "At Fingerprints (Acoustic) - EP" and this brings a similar vibe to the table but is just a little more full. I do love how the lyrics make the mundane beautiful, I am always a fan of that sort of lyricism and it's gorgeous here.
Honorable mentions!! 🥳🥳🥳
"Automatic" (I Think) was the main single off the album. It has a great chorus and I would love to be in a pit screaming this song. Great vibes, very hype. This song also has some of the best drums on this song.
"The Point" I just love the chorus here, it is another very hype song. I love the part of the chorus where he says "What's the point" It just sounds so vindicative. I love how words in the chorus are repeated, it's a different way to fill the syllables on a song and I like it here!
"Thank You" I ADORE half•alive for their really quiet songs, like this one. his singing here is also just so pretty, this is a brilliant way to sign off an album.

this past week I listened to "I'M DOING IT AGAIN BABY!" by girl in red
Tumblr media
⭐️⭐️⭐️(3 out of 5 stars)
This album is short and so will be this review because I have a headache (damned cold front rolling through).
I liked this album. I used to be a fan of girl in red back when we all were. I enjoyed "if i could make it go quiet", I won't act like I didn't listen to it for hours when it came out but I moved on and now it's 2024. This album feels a lot different from her old music but it is still very much her and has a level of nostalgia.
Opinion time! (as always, not opinion order, just album order)
"Phantom Pain" I just like the lyrics here a lot. The instrumentation is simple but works really well. I love how it builds and then has the quiet bridge back into the chorus building into the contrasting "Let me love you" section. I love how she goes from talking about why the relationship is bad but then goes into the outro regardless. It is a very human song, even if it is a bad decision in real life.
"You Need Me Now?" The guitar here is very classic girl in red and I'm a fan. The drums here are nice even if I know they're not real. I LOVE the post-chorus so much. It is addicting. I agree that it is "really fucking cool" that Sabrina Carpenter is on this song. I was not expecting her on this album at all but I was definitely pleasantly surprised. Their voices work together super well. It makes me wish Sabrina had more rock-style songs.
"New Love" is very much a classic girl in red song. It's much more what I expected out of this album. It sounds like her older stuff but more mature and developed. Sometimes you just want a sad-indie-break-up-song. I love the guitar riff breaking up the chorus it is a much-appreciated layer. I love that the outro here is instrumental, making it stand out among the rest of the album a bit more.
Honorable mentions!! 🥳🥳🥳
"Too Much" pretty sure this was the main single off of this album. It is super catchy and the singing in the chorus is so pretty <3.
"A Night To Remember" this song has such a pretty piano part. I love the whole concept of "what if we didn't meet" and this is such a pretty song. The chorus is also so cool lyrically, the words just have a really cool rhythm.

This week I listened to "liminal space" by Mxmtoon
Tumblr media
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(4 out of 5 stars)
This album was definitely a change of pace from what I usually listen to. I had heard of Mxmtoon, but I had never listened to her music outside of the common TikTok sound or circa 2020 playlists. I went into this quieter album with an open mind and I enjoyed the ride. Quite literally. I had the chance to be outside riding my bike a lot this week and that's where I really got to love this album. It definitely is not the louder type of music that I enjoy during the school day or during work but I liked it a lot in my downtime, working on hobbies and things.
It was nice to get a fuller perspective for myself on Mxmtoon outside of her random popular songs or what’s in Heartstopper. I like her a lot as a musician and she has some beautiful songs and lyrics. I wish I could listen to this for the first time every time I listen to it. It is so perfect and every song is gut-wrenching in one way or another.
Opinion time! (as always, not opinion order, just album order)
“I hate texas” I am very much a big fan of the very full folk/country sound at the start of this song. I think the whole instrumentation being more country is super cool, especially with how it contrasts with the rest of the album. I absolutely adore the little guitar motif in the pre-chorus the tone is so cool and the riff is very catchy. I love the chorus, I was very skeptical going into the song, as I like Texas (to a degree obviously) but I am a fan of the idea of the song, I feel the idea of not being able to get away from people and just wanting that change. I love the proud inclusion of the fiddle in this song and its inclusion in the outro.
“rain” This song is SO catchy. I was humming along on my very first listen, shocking to even myself. I love how it starts and how it carries little bits of the folk elements from the previous song. I think this song is so beautiful, I am always down for hating on California. I love seasons!!! This song just has such an addictive melody and I love it so much. This song is absolutely dreamy and I am so happy that it is the longest song on this album, I want it to last forever. I adore the lines about the redwood trees, I think trees are consistently one of my favorite metaphors for aging. I love snow, I love the rain, I love this song longing for them.
“number one boy” Never has a song nearly made me cry on the very first listen like this one did. I know that Maia is not trans but ultimately this song reads as trans to me (I am obviously very biased). I have felt every single part of this song to my core growing up. I cannot believe how gorgeous this song is. It has a very simple instrumentation but it works so perfectly. I think that ambiance is something that Mxmtoon has geniusly mastered. From the first lyric, I was gripped, and then all the way through. The chorus is devastating and I will not be forgiving Maia for writing this one.
Honorable mentions!! 🥳🥳🥳
“VHS” the beat here is very groovy and I am a fan. The chorus is also super catchy and dreamy.
“the situation (feat. Kero Kero Bonito)” another very groovy beat. I like the lyrics here a lot, it's a good song of longing but still upbeat, and once again I am a twentyonepilots fan at heart. I also love these guy's voices together so much.
“now’s not the time (feat. Luna Li)” This song is so sad, just for the outro it's up here. Just those lyrics were devastating.

This week I listened to Chromakopia
Tumblr media
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(5 out of 5 stars)
I liked this album a LOT and I know that I am not the first one to say this even in the slightest. I would not be shocked if this ends up being one of the highest critically rated albums this year.
For once I am actually listening to a popular album when it came out and that's cool! I had a great time with this album and I could not recommend it more if you haven't heard it yet.
Opinion time! (as always, not opinion order, just album order)
"Darling, I (feat. Teezo Touchdown)" is probably just one of the best songs I have heard in a really long time. It blends a beautiful melody and I like the lyricism a lot. It is such a beautifully human song and he acknowledges that with "I'm only human, if it ain't work...". I love the little bits of where he feels love compared to actual relationships, talking, about wealth and music. I think the line about how music fulfills you is just so beautiful and I love it. I love the layers of vocals, I think it it very characteristic of Tyler's music and it's amazing every time. I love this song so much.
"Hey Jane" I would pick this song off of this album for the best storytelling. I love love love that this song has the first section from Tyler's point of view and then it switches to "Jane's" point of view. I think it is a very cleverly written song. I don't think that the beat or anything is particularly of note but it's a great song and I'm a fan.
"Sticky (feat. GloRilla, Sexyy Red & Lil Wayne)" first off, the whistling is constantly stuck in my head. The human voice is an amazing instrument because everyone knows it and you can get things like that stuck in listener's heads very easily. This is very much the sillier side of Tyler's music and I appreciated it a lot that it is halfway through the album. I always like it when there are lots of people on a song. I love music being collaborative. I love that this song has drum and bugle on it, I love real instruments!!!
Honorable mentions!! 🥳🥳🥳
"Rah Tah Tah" This song is very goofy and very catchy and very hype and just all around a great vibe right off the bat for this album. I LOVE how it goes straight into "Noid" I always love it when albums do that.
"Take Your Mask Off" (feat. Daniel Caesar & Latoiya Williams)" This song just has a genuinely great message and I love it. It's super catchy and all around a great vibe.

This week I listened to Cuco's "Fantasy Gateway"
Tumblr media
⭐️⭐️⭐️(3 out of 5 stars)
I do have to preface this review with the fact that I only have a very elementary level of Spanish, and this album is (significantly partially) in Spanish. I did bother to look up the lyrics and understand what he's talking about, but I definitely don't understand a lot of the nuance.
I did like this album a lot, I always love it when an album tells a very specific story, I think is is a lot of fun and a great use of writing. You could write a book or you could write an album and I just think that's so neat.
Opinion time! (as always, not opinion order, just album order)
"Paraphonic" This whole album is very dreamy, which makes sense given the topic and the whole idea of the album. This song is full of great reverb and layers that melt together beautifully. I love the chorus so much, it is very catchy and the melody is so interesting compared to the pretty basic chords and bass. I love the way that the 2nd verse contests the first. And augh, the bridge is so cool. I love how it is just a little different from the main melody. I also greatly appreciate that it goes straight into the next song (Artificially Intelligence) making the two feel like one long song.
"When The Day Come To An End" I love how the drums open the song and then drop out for the first chorus. It is a really interesting way to start a song and I feel like not enough bands utilize it. The whole chorus is really catchy and full of delicious vocal layering. I also love how the bridge uses "Feeling...seeing...doing...moving" and then contrasting "Feel it... see it... lose it" I think is it neat lyricism.
"Sitting In The Corner (feat. Kacey Musgraves)" I really like this collaboration. Their voices work so well together. Adriel Favela is also on this track adding another voice. I just love how this song proudly and effortlessly goes between styles. Even if me understanding rap in Spanish is far beyond my skill set, It sounds really cool and is catchy, and having so many people on this song is really cool to see. I love the little bits of Mexican influence throughout, especially with the instrumentation of the slower sections and much more obviously the grito yelling.
Honorable mentions!! 🥳🥳🥳
"Aura" I found myself singing along with a lot. It is super catchy and even if it doesn't have a lot to do with the plot of this album, it is a grat vibe and I think it is still representative.
"Foolish" I love the bass on this song. I want to put it in my mouth. I also just like the idea of having a name "stuck to [your] heart" I love how the instrumentals pull in the guitar.

Gaddamn I did not expect to love brat so much
Tumblr media
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(4 out of 5 stars)
this gets such a solid 4/5, I loved it so much. It is completely the opposite of last week's energy (yet oddly still British) and just unlike anything I tend to listen to. I really was not expecting to fall in love with this album in the way that I did.
I definitely enjoyed it being entirely collaborations, I think it is an amazing showcase of everyone's talent who worked on the album. Unfortunately, I did listen to this album in a vacuum away from the original brat. I have heard the most popular songs of course, but this was my first experience with this album cover to cover (although I did only listen to disc 1, the collabs, in the interest of my time).
I definitely was not expecting such emotion out of this album as it is here and it was a welcomed surprise.
Opinion time! (as always, not opinion order, just album order)
"Sympathy is a knife featuring ariana grande"- This may be filtered by my previous bias of liking Ariana Grande when I was little, but I like this song a lot. It is very catchy and their voices work together so well. I like that this song isn't afraid to be witty (notably at the end of the verses with the "who the fuck is she" lines) while still dealing with the idea of how people change and treat you when you're as massive as Charli or Ariana. I don't have a ton to say on the composition. Grande is a brilliant singer, and it's a dance track. I do like this genre when it uses silence behind vocals to build contrast with other parts of the song, which is used throughout this track.
"Talk talk featuring troye sivan"- Seeing Troye Sivan's name on this album was a little shocking, I had not realized he was doing music at this scale at all and not just the little 2016 gay guy YouTuber anymore /hj. The chorus here is addictive and I love how the conversation is formed between their different lines. I am addicted to the way Sivan's verse after the first chorus starts and how the music comes back. This is very much a pure, lighthearted dance track and it definitely was not a song I was expecting to have in my top 3 but here we are and I love it.
"So I featuring a. g. cook"- I love how the weird synth at the start introduces the melody over the back and gets that stuck in your mind before the rest of the song. I do love this song mostly for the lyrics. I especially know how music impacts memory and it's a beautiful thing (hell I have an album for every single week of my life this year). It very much is written as a love song for whoever "you" is (I am assuming a. g. cook, although I could be wrong). I do love how the song ends and changes the song from a more chill track to a much more electronic DJ track. It is a really cool song and I think it shows all of the faces of this album in a brilliant way.
Honorable mentions!! 🥳🥳🥳
"Girl, so confusing featuring lorde" I love Lorde very passively, stoked to see her on this album. Uh yeah, this song is transgender allegory/hj. But yeah, great song, super catchy.
"I think about it all the time featuring bon river" what a gut-wrenching song. The fear of running out of time is crazy and so pure and This song is able to give off the feeling of that anxiety is such an amazing way and I can't even describe how. It is gorgeous and catchy and a great song.
"Guess featuring billie eilish" so goofy and, wow, Billie Eilish AND Charli XCX on one track is absolutely what I needed this year. I don't have to explain Billie's verse, this is Tumblr. <3

This past week (and a half) I listened to Return to Zero by Ricky Jamaraz
Tumblr media
whoa, now there's actually easily accessible high-quality album art online!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(4 out of 5 stars)
I really enjoyed this album, every time this man releases a new album I'm shocked, he has so many out and they're better every time. I think the principle that this was all recorded on cassettes is crazy and just shows how much care was put into the album. I'm glad to see he has fun with making music album after album. It also makes me feel a bit shit about my state of making music because I am practically the same age as him yet I haven't released 7 full-length albums.
Opinion time! (as always, not opinion order, just album order)
"Pills 4 The Pills" is a brilliant 2nd track. It is hype and sets the mood for this album to be goofy while still coping with the terrible topics this album deals with. To write a silly goofy song about Big Pharma that just makes me want to dance is crazy. It's not a super deep song. The drums are nice, and the main guitar riff is super catchy. This album has some of the best drums of any album he's put out yet and it adds a nice layer. The chorus is super catchy and I love 2 parts to the bridge. The drum break is nice and really sets a bar for his music going forward. The final chorus is so much fun with the random noises and all of the things going on.
"Making Movies" is definitely the goofiest and the freakiest song on the album. I love the drums going into and in the chorus. This sort of song definitely was not what I was expecting but it is such a great song. I love the little piano glissando in the choruses, it adds just that little bit of theatre and I love it. This song got stuck in my head the most this week.
------------------------------------------
CW: Suicide for the next song, skip if you have to <3
------------------------------------------
"Sammy" is a completely different mood from the last two songs dealing with the suicide of a roommate/friend of the speaker. It's a classic happy-sounding song through the intro but very quickly shows its hand with just the first line with very blunt lyrics. This song is probably my favorite singing on this album. This song has a lot going on with the guitar, synths, and drums all going on and it adds a layer that you can ignore the lyrics and just vibe adding a layer of irony which I just personally love in music. I love the piano being included in the outro, it feels like the character has coped with the death better than earlier in the song but still isn't healed all the way. There is also great lyricism here that goes for the rest of the album, which is full of metaphor.
-------------------------------------------
Honorable mentions!! 🥳🥳🥳
"Where'd You Get Those Bruises" [CW: Domestic Abuse/Child Abuse] What a gorgeous, gorgeous song about domestic abuse wow. The guitar is beautiful and the singing is too. The lyricism feels so innocent and augh, what a sad, beautiful song.
"Meals" [CW: ED] This has the best drums on this album I love the final chorus so much, it sounds so angry and makes such a great song, the topic... not so much

"Everything Is Wrong" by Lincoln is an amazing album and you should listen to it
Tumblr media
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(4.5 out of 5 stars) (once again, there is no half-star emoji)
I did not start this challenge to find more white boys making midwest emo music but goddamn, do I like midwest emo music.
I was a big fan of most of this album. It goes between gut-wrenchingly sad songs and happier love songs and I love it so much.
Opinion time! (as always, not opinion order, just album order)
"Everything Is Wrong", I hate putting first songs as a top song but this song I could not leave out. The main riff is established right off the bat on a lovely synth. I adore the vocals on this track. The intro is fairly basic but vocal layering carries it. I love the way the line "You reap what you sow" is sung, it makes me so happy. Then getting to the chorus I LOVE the way the things that are as wrong are sung. There are some beautiful little bits of English writing in that. I especially love the use of "Waterfalls, fireflies" because that's just gorgeous. I think this is a brilliant way to start the album and instantly and blatantly state the goal of the album. I love this song <3.
"New Music" I love the intro and how it starts and picks up from the last song. I love the quick establishment of the guitar and then straight into the verse. It is a very calming song and feels like somber acceptance. I love just the line "You're only a new band once." I'm not the biggest fan of the "once" being quieter and separated, but I like the sentiment. The song then picks up into a louder verse. The last verse is my favorite and it is so perfectly noisy and I love her. I love that the guitar takes the melody at the end mirroring the start of the song.
"Manager's Special" This song is so painful and GORGEOUS. I literally got chills hearing the singing and still do every time I hear it. The plain vocals and acoustic guitar feel so raw and purely human. I love the line of "Love you just enough to hope you don't love me". It's so pretty and raw. Please please please listen to this man sing the lines "This has been the longest stretch of Hell I've ever seen" and the following lines in the verse. The power and sadness in his voice. I am in love with this song, this is absolutely my number one on the album.
Honorable mentions!! 🥳🥳🥳
"Baby Take My Acid" (feat. Penelope Scott)" To be honest, I only just realized this was Penelope Scott typing that. This album is a much more typical indie rock song. I love it, the main guitar riff is super nice too. I do love how their voices work together in this song.
"Shotgun" I love the vocalization on this song and the creepier feeling instrumentation. This song has such a distinct feeling and I just think it sounds so neat. Please give this one a listen.
"From God" This song feels like I've heard it before and I feel like the feel is definitely similar to another popular song but I can't remember what. I still think it has a great vibe and has so pretty vocals.

This week I got sick and I listened to "All of the Things You Said" by Coastal Club
Tumblr media
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(4 out of 5 stars)
I deeply appologize, this week's review will be chronically shorter than all others, I got sick during the time I would normally write, and I fall victim to the world in that I have school and a job, so here we are, late on a Tuesday and I have minimal to share.
I loved this album. It is packed with beautiful harmonies and amazing drum beats. (Seriously, I love the drums on this album so much.) This album has great beachy vibes and these guys deserve so much more.
I have to suggest giving this one a listen in the time it would normally take to read my post because I am so sorry this will be so brief. The album sits at just 30 minutes with 7 songs that are all amazing.
Opinion time! (as always, not opinion order, just album order)
"Be Like Me" I love the main riff so much <3
"Existential" I love a chorus full of ooos or lalalas or anything with no real lyrics because they are always super catchy, as is this song. I love the verses so much too <3
"Conversation" This feels like musical theatre to me. I love this song. I love love love the main synth used. It pokes my brain in the best way
Honorable mentions!! 🥳🥳🥳
"Are You There?" I found the most catchy. It is definitely a much more classic indie pop song. Reminiscent of Harry Styles (positive)

This week I listened to Dayglow's new self-titled album!
Tumblr media
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(4.5 out of 5 stars)(alas no half star emoji STILL)
I loved this album a lot! So much I waited until Tuesday evening to give my final opinion because I liked so many songs and had to spend some time narrowing stuff down... and my Monday got away from me...
I've loved Dayglow for ages and was super hyped for this album to come out. I'm so happy it is here and it did not disappoint at all. This album is packed full of silly and sweet and sad and I love it.
Opinion time! (as always, not opinion order, just album order)
"Old Friend, New Face" stuck out to me right away. I love the chorus, I love the main guitar riff a lot. I love the 2nd verse so much it scratches my brain in all the right ways. I love the subtle vocal layers added in the final chorus. I love this song.
"Weatherman" I love the contrast between different vocal lines, the "feel it" right at the start of the song is so goofy in the best way. I love the drums on this track a lot. The guitar is addictive with the arpeggios before the pre-chorus. I love that the whole song is an extended metaphor, if Shakespeare can do that, Sloan can. The instrumental wasn't really what I was expecting but it very quickly grew on me. I'm always impressed by people who are better at guitar than me (most guitarists). I love how the final chorus is in there putting such a nice cap on the song.
"Silver Lining" just makes me want to dance. I like the drums and I like the rhythms in the verses. There are lots of impressive vocals in this song. I LOVE the bridge so much. I love it forever actually. I love how the song ends very abruptly with the same line as the start of the song.
Honorable mentions!! 🥳🥳🥳
"What People Really Do" deserves so much more cowbell. I love her. I love the line "My brain is sauteed"
"Nothing Ever Does!!!" wins the "most exclamation points award" I love this song and how silly it is and all the noises.
"Broken Bone" has the best intro on this album and then dreamy vocals and guitar <3<3<3

I find that is it sunday once again and this week I listened to Aloha Inoha by INOHA
Tumblr media
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(4 out of 5 stars)
Yeah, these guys seem super cool and this is a brilliant debut album. Pretty basic band instrumentation, a couple of guitars, drums, and bass but it works super well. Their vocalist does a great job on every song and everything is super memorable without feeling repetitive.
Gonna jump straight into...
Opinion time! (as always, not opinion order, just album order)
going quite deep into the album,
"Saturday Nights" had to work for me to like it yet here it stands at top 3. At first, I was afraid of another song by some young people claiming the best day of the week but this song fucks (I can say that because it is the only explicit song of this album/j). I do appreciate the reference to The Cure with the line "We all know/ Friday's for fallin' in love" because it is subtle and shows some self-awareness. Overall, I like the groove of this song. The guitar solo is sick and this song in general has great drums. The bridge is really cool with the call response structure, and I think it would be really cool to see it live. It's not a super deep song and it is just pure fun.
"Papaya Man" stuck out to me on my first listen of this album. I love it. It is unabashedly goofy and fun and I love it. The guitar melody is really good and there is a perfect level of drums. I like the bridge a lot, it is so goofy and builds tension beautifully for the last chorus.
"A Next Time" just has amazing composition. The intro is so full and tasty. I love the vocals following the guitar in the verse so much. The chorus is simple and works really well. The guitars here, man. The last verse has my heart forever. Great layering and all that stuff. Lobe this song sm.
Honorable mentions!! 🥳🥳🥳
"The Tide" This song is really simple and sweet and I love it. I love just vocals and ukulele and then the development of the guitar and drums. I love it even if this song doesn't have much of a "deep" meaning. And then the second half of the song happens and it is LOUD and FUN.
"Seventh Heaven" has probably, what I think is, the best lyricism on this album and then they pair that with awesome instrumentation and that is how you make your most popular song as an indie band. And the bridge itches my brain.
"Biggest Salmon" like papaya man is goofy and fun. I love the delivery of "But I have to Breathe/ I have to shout it out" and how the drums and guitar match the rhythm. This song is almost like Weezer in the best way possible.
overall I liked this album a lot and I wanna hear more music from these guys for sure!

This week I listened to IGOR by Tyler, The Creator
Tumblr media
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(4 out of 5 stars)
Yeah, I liked this album a lot and I listened to it a lot this week. I always wanted to get into Tyler The Creator's music because he is just such an icon in pop culture and I'm not shocked at how good this album was. I think it is really impressive that he wrote and produced all of his music. I wish I had more downtime to dive into the story of this album since I know about all the praise it gets but that wasn't the nature of my week.
I don't have a load of energy to really dig into these songs this week and I really wish I did have the energy because I just think this album deserves it but here goes
Opinion time! (as always, not opinion order, just album order)
I think "I THINK" is a great song. I like the percussive use of "four" and "skate". The chorus is catchy and this song has great layering. The bridge is cool and the synths are used very nicely. I like how the outro is piano and then goes into the next "song" as much as you can call "EXACTLY WHAT YOU RUN FROM YOU END UP CHASING" a song since it's so short
"A BOY IS A GUN" again, again, I am going to talk about layering. This song is really cool and I love the contrasting sections a lot. I like how the song itself is nearly a loop; I think that's just cool. I like that the main instrument is the piano, it's nice to see regular piano in an album.
"WHAT'S GOOD" is just hype. I like how there are instrumental sections in between the verses, I think it's a cool contrast. The "I see the light" portions are a really cool way to break up the song and change the narrative for the end of the song.
Honorable mentions!! 🥳🥳🥳
(this is gonna be real lazy sorry gang)
"RUNNING OUT OF TIME" is really catchy and chill and dreamlike and all the positive adjectives.
"GONE, GONE / THANK YOU" I am a twentyonepilots fan at my core and I love a happy sounding song with a less happy meaning. This song sounds happy but also mourning the loss of the speaker's love and I just think it's neat. It also just sounds really nice
"I DON'T LOVE YOU ANYMORE" just has a really cool chorus and great vibes. I love the distorted guitar (?) in the back a lot, it adds a great layer. Really cool way to end the story of the relationship and of course go into "ARE WE STILL FRIENDS?"
