I actually study stuff like this. IQ tests are a specific kind of intelligence metric with a very, very rough history. It's creators were eugenicists, and often racist to boot. It was designed with the idea that every person can be ranked on the scale of intelligence, with 100 being the average person, and a standard deviation of 15 points. (A score of 0 or 200 is borderline impossible).

This idea is fundamentally flawed, the brain isn't an organ with only one function. Intelligence, even as defined in modern descendants of the IQ test, is inherently fluid. Scores can change due to alertness or effort, sustained learning to develop new skills, disease, literally anything that could hypothetically alter thought.

That said, modern "IQ tests" today do measure certain aspects of intelligence. The issue is that people assume it must measure intelligence as a whole (which as op pointed out, is insanely nuanced and multifaceted). The descendants of IQ tests used today (including things like the SAT btw) usually measure something called executive function*, which is a very well researched intelligence metric, but is NOT designed to define all of intelligence as one number, as that is fundamentally impossible. Scores can change for one person, and different EF tests, even if valid and reliable, can yield different scores in the same person depending on what exactly they test for.

*not to be confused with executive function as used in conversations surrounding neurodivergent conditions, confusingly that is an entirely separate concept that isn't correlated with the intelligence metric executive function.

Isn't it fucking insane that so many people think that IQs are real. Like people genuinely believe you are born with one set level of intelligence that can be measured on a scale from 1 to ~200. As if intelligence wasn't extremely nuanced and completely subjective. And the fact that the majority of scientists that have advocated for IQ tests in the past have been eugenicists doesn't seem to concern anyone either
