My thoughts on RadioApple 📻🍎

In honor of S2’s release date and #RadioAppleWeek, here is my analysis of RadioApple that no one asked for!

Let’s discuss canon first: 

At first glance, this is a really difficult pairing for me to imagine having any genuineness to it, mainly because we still know next to NOTHING about Alastor. Obviously, what’s interesting about his character is that he works very hard to ensure that nobody knows his true intentions or feelings. He’s an enigma wrapped in an enigma. (Is he actually sociopathic, or is it an act?) I think we really have no idea how their relationship will develop (if it even does at all) until we know more about the Radio Demon. 

It’s clear that Lucifer pisses him off more than anyone, but we still don’t know why exactly that is. It could be that Lucifer was an unplanned variable; his presence makes it more difficult to manipulate Charlie, and even worse, he’s undisputedly more powerful than him. Alastor is smart. He knows Lucifer could kill him without even trying, and he HATES not being at the top of the food chain.

But that doesn’t really explain why such a tactical sinner would intentionally provoke the king and challenge him. It would seemingly make more sense to gain Lucifer’s trust and influence. To manipulate him as well, rather than going against the grain and directly trying to one-up him. This could just be a flaw in Alastor’s judgement (?) 

Finally, we don’t know who Alastor is under contract with. Is it possible that he doesn’t even know? I know it’s highly theorized that it’s Lilith, so what if Alastor knows only that his soul belongs to one of Charlie’s parents, and he assumes it’s Lucifer. If Alastor thinks he’s intentionally feigning ignorance, that would explain the provocation and why he’s so pissed.

Now, let’s get into the fanon!

Even if I don’t expect this ship to canonically happen (I may be proven wrong!) I do love a lot of the RadioApple content that people have made! Here are some of my favorite and least-favorite portrayals: 

HURT/COMFORT 

5/5. I really like this theme in general, but I can also see it happening in the show, to an extent. Al begrudgingly having to comfort Lucifer if he’s anxious or despondent. Lucifer INSISTING on healing Alastor’s hidden wound, not because he wants to, but because he HAS TO. He doesn’t care if something happens to Alastor, but he knows that Charlie does, and that she and the hotel need him. 

ENEMIES TO LOVERS / ENEMIES & LOVERS / LOVERS

3/5. This is probably the most common dynamic that I’ve seen, and it’s easy to see why! It’s a really fun trope, and would allow them to be competitive while still having a relationship. The problem with this concept is obvious: Alastor’s asexuality. As someone on the aro/ace spectrum myself, I admit that it’s just that, a spectrum. And granted, Al hasn’t explicitly stated how he feels regarding romance. But I think that he has a long way to go before he can even have a real friendship, so a relationship based SOLELY on sexual attraction wouldn’t make any sense to me. BUT, I can see an enemies to friends, or an enemies to it’s-complicated!

POSSESSIVE / MANIPULATIVE 

0/5. Honestly, I just really don’t like this trope in general. Without the characters ever being friends in the first place, it seems to just sexualize toxicity. It also just doesn’t seem very in-character for Alastor to be jealous over a partner, but this is all just my opinion! It’s fine to enjoy this idea.

CO-FATHERS / “FOR CHARLIE?” “FOR CHARLIE.” 

4/5. Another favorite of mine, and one of the slightly more realistic RadioApple portrayals that I’ve seen. This seems to be the direction that they’re already going — which is begrudgingly accepting each other’s presence for Charlie’s sake. I think they could maybe expand on this dynamic, because it looks like Alastor is (slowly) beginning to care about Charlie, and I think it’d be sweet and funny if literally their ONLY mutual ground was her.

3/5. This isn’t that deep, but I think it’s funny that Lucifer literally invented temptation and successfully married the first baddie in existence, while Alastor couldn’t give less of a shit about attraction. On top of this, Lucifer is a social mess around people he genuinely cares about, but is powerful and confident around everyone else. Alastor, on the other hand, navigates social interactions like a chess match. I want to see them navigating a function together!

SIBLING DYNAMIC

1/5. I’m ALL FOR platonic RadioApple, but “siblings” seems to be pushing it. That implies a level of power equality and familiarity that they just don’t have. A lot of close relationships can be interpreted as either romantic or just affectionate, and only the people in said relationship get to define that. But, at the end of the day, these are fictional characters, someone’s OCs, so what Vivziepop says, goes. 

If she says they’re friends, they’re friends. If she says they’re enemies, they’re enemies and so on. But she’s also indicated that she doesn’t really care if people ship her characters or not. So, really, we’re free to rotate them in our mind like a rotisserie chicken all we want, even if it’s “out of character.”

OKAY SEE THIS IS WHAT I MEAN (yes two of them are canon and one of those two is a “straight” couple but the point still stands)

“Why are all of your favorite ships MLM or WLW? That’s fetishization”

NO.

Most of my favorite ships are queer because ROMANTIC LOVE built on GENUINE FRIENDSHIP does and always has meant a lot to me.

So many male/female romance arcs these days TELL you they’re in love, while male/male and female/female arcs SHOW YOU that they’re in love.

Not to mention that the enemies-to-lovers trope and the strong female character have been interpreted as the love interest hating/being extremely rude to the guy, and emotionally unavailable without effort to improve, while the guy falls for her anyway.

I like non-canon queer ships because you can SEE the dynamic that got them there, instead of just accepting that they MUST be meant for each other simply because they’re a man and a woman.

On the use of “they” as a singular pronoun

It is not about proper grammar. It has NEVER been about proper grammar. If it had been about grammar, you would have known that “they” has been used as a singular pronoun since at least the fourteenth century. English-speakers have been using “they” to denote a person of an unspecified gender for centuries, from the writings of Shakespeare to 21st-century everyday conversation, and it is often used without even realizing it. This is because humans are not stupid, and can learn and understand new words and syntax very easily if they want to. Language is an abstract construct in of itself, and there are far more “flaws” in the design of English to focus on than this. The problem is that you are transphobic, and are unwilling to change your behavior. So, no. It is not about grammar. It has NEVER been about grammar. It is about you, using a flimsy excuse for why you should not be expected to respect people who you deem unworthy. Hope this helps!

On episode 111 of the Magnus Archives, and among the many funny and interesting bits, I can’t get over the beginning.

Like, they really locked Jon in a room with the book like a bunch of kids doing Bloody Mary at a sleepover. Really said “Well obviously I’M not gonna touch that thing.”

i like the idea of snufkin falling for moomintroll the moment they met, in comet in moominland, but....

snufkin falling for moomin slowly and without him realizing for years appeals to me more. let me.. be unnecessarily long about this.

these two escape a world-ending catastrophe together, a flood, a magical hobgoblin (who wasn't that much of a threat, but hush), a volcanic eruption, the groke... and in the process, they get closer and closer, and have these little moments of solitude where it's only the 2 of them. hibernating together, the first day of each spring, the time with the dragon, finding the queen's emerald, the sleepovers, the walks they've apparently sneaked out on several times. and during all this, without either of them realizing, they fall for each other.

one thing i can't ever decide is who faces this fact first. who's the one to realize that this feeling might not be just the love for a best friend, but rather a crush. i'm voting snufkin, but place your bets in the comments/tags, i am genuinely interested.

well, anyway... idk, i just thought.. this was cute 👉👈 love at first sight, is nice and all, but getting to know someone and loving each small aspect of their personality... has me in tears.
