Ok hear me out.
It’s safe to say that Caleb has been entranced by the Happy Fun Ball. Behind every door lies potential, every bookshelf holds arcane secrets. He’s all over the place, but still… determined. What may read as distraught and out-of-it to us? I think it’s actually Caleb at his most focused, his most studious. For the past few months his vision has widened to allow other paths to cross his view. He wanted to help his friends achieve their goals, got sucked into a war effort and focused his mind on how best to protect his newly found family. But here? In this place where magic has been archived, studied, harnessed and tinkered with? That vision of his has focused right back down. He stares at doors to unknown rooms, beelines for any scrap of paper and blows all caution to the wind just to discover more, learn more and make it his own.
There were only two moments in the ball where someone managed to pierce through his determination. When he was staring at the door to the study and was waiting for Frumpkin, Caduceus asked him whether he was okay. He responded, but didn’t shift his gaze. When Jester asked again, he finally, painfully tore himself from the entrance to that study - a study that must’ve been haunting him for months for how underexplored they had left it at their last visit to the ball.
And in the most recent episode, there was another moment. It was small, but significant. Caleb argued to take the route through the Dreadnought chamber. The way he made this point lead me to believe that he had made up his mind and wasn’t likely going to listen to counterarguments at all. But then someone chimes in. Jester gives him a pointed, “I feel like the power of this place is sucking you in”. He looks at her, doesn’t respond. But then a few moments later he has changed his mind. He says to take the other route - for now. Of course, we know this doesn’t last, but for a short while, he had seen himself through her eyes. He understood what he was asking them and her to do, just to fulfil his curiosity.
Neither of these moments happened in isolation and there were many other voices in the room (Caduceus, most importantly), but something about them felt important to me and my Widojest heart. It’s good to know that she can pierce through his determined gaze, and even more so: that he lets her do it.

I genuinely think that Essek has to know that something is up cause I don't think one day has passed since he's known the mighty nein that he hasn't gotten a message from jester. So you know his older sibling senses are probably tingling.

Essek right now probably...
Essek: I haven’t gotten a message from Jester in quite awhile… should I be worried? No. They’re probably alright.
Essek:*waking up in a cold sweat at 3am* wait this is the mighty nein! they probably aren’t alright!

I appreciate that, the minute Matt got even the slightest indication the heart noise might be bothering someone at the table, he offered to turn it off.

I love how the Mighty Nein is at all times moments away from collectively losing all impulse control.
Remember when a simple eavesdropping mission became a month long pirate expedition. That’s only a fraction of the energy they just generated by after knowing exactly where they needed to go and that they have a time crunch lEaPiNg InTo ThE gAPiNG mAw Of An AsTrAl DrEaDnAuGhT and going OFF THE MAP TO AN UNCHARTED AREA IN A MAGE KILLING DUNGEON WHERE THE CREATOR IS STILL ALIVE AND HAS ALREADY IMPRISONED A MORE POWERFUL MAGE.

#yall act like they personally came into your D&D game and fucked it up#the fact that people think Matt thinkings a billion steps ahead Mercer#would just willingly give this option to his players with the intention of just killing everyone#i said it already but ill say it again yall a bunch of babies#like really listen to your complaining and say youre not being overdramatic#critical role#cr spoilers#critical role spoilers

I really think people might be over-reacting. ^.^;;
1.) Matt would never trap them someplace without there being a way out, even if it takes solving a difficult puzzle to do it.
2.) IC, HALLAS probably has a door out, like he has for every other room to some extent, this is just another part of this absolutely insane labyrinth.
C.) This is PEAK chaotic D&D! Exploring the crazy shit because it’s cool! :D I for one giggled with glee right alone with them. SURE, yeah, there’s a shit ton of serious plot stuff out there, too, and they do need to find Yussa eventually, but, dammit, RULE OF FUN!!! :D
