sorry im late!!! 15, 27, 39, and 55 for the bug meme if you still feel like doing it!
15. most underrated bug? why are all these questions so hard. ummmm bug. bugs? bug. buggu. i got stuck on this and my gf suggested miller moth, which are a yearly "menace" "pest" (migrating group) in my area. they are so bad at everything. they go bonk bonk bonk into your face and squeeze through your door crack and then go ???huh?????where me???? and bonk bonk BONK at your ceiling (which is how they get the name. bc they knock so many of their scales off that it gets dust everywhere as if from a mill.) and somehow they migrate to the mountains in the spring every year, WHERE BEARS EAT THEM IN THE THOUSANDS PER BEAR PER DAY??, and then down back to the plains in the fall, and only they do they become capable of reproduction????? again: most incompetent guys all time. also extremely buttery and everyone wants to eat them. enough survive to reproduce each year. somehow??? [kronk voice] by all accounts it doesn't make sense. anyway i love them even if on their more intense years i do eventually get annoyed at capturing and releasing the EIGHTEENTH month in one DAY-
27. what first attracted you to bugs as a study or hobby. i was vaguely interested in bugs before but not in a 'favorite guys ever' kind of way UNTIL i moved to the east (horrible.) for like 8 months and was like. fuck. im gonna need to find some joy while im here. what does the east have? bugs i guess. time 2 get into bugs. and that's what i did. then the pandemic happened and bugs were for a while the only joy in the world, basically
39. favorite depiction of bugs in the media? ...nothing beats a certain moment in disco elysium, probably
55. your choice! wax poetic about whatever bug related topic you want! (holds out mic) o shit uh this is somehow even harder than the other questions. ummm speaking of miller moths this one time while i was capturing one (classic cup and paper method), once it was caught i decided to tilt the cup open a tiny bit, idr why, maybe just to see its cute face or to like make sure i got it. i only cracked the cup a tiny bit but, to my surprise, the moth SQUEEEEZED out ON ITS BACK, tummy up, pulling itself along the cup with its legs. and then of course immediately began bonking against every wall and i had to capture it again.
also something u notice if u meet a lot of bugs is they have different personalities, even within the same species. on miller moth heavy years u really really get to see that by the 50th moth release or whatever. some as soon as you take them outside, zoom, they're gone. others have to antennae around a while to notice the smell of fresh air. others have to be CLEAN before they go anywhere, GOSH. their brains are so small but somehow they fit traits in there.

from discord: i think in a lot of situations “punch further up” is good advice compared to lateral or crab bucket stuff but the main bigger-picture issue with it imo is that if an actual structure of slots for a topmost guy and second guy and etc etc in this manner doesn’t change, punching further up also doesn’t help, bc if the guy at the top gets punched off the top, everyone will just scoot one slot up so that the former second-top guy is at the top now and the third guy is the second and etc etc (this dogma of finding The Single Top JRPG Boss has made most analysis about irl politics and history u n b e a r a b l e for years. same with (even more patly) most sff fiction and analysis about fiction lol. the ‘just 1 appropriately punch the ‘topmost’ guy step 2 ??? step 3 profit’ thing. there’s some structure where punching off the topmost guy does cause everything to fall apart (eg certain monarchies) but there’s a great variety of bad structures. corporations for example work very differently).

23 33 43! 🐛
23. if you could rename any bug, which one and what would you call it? I think I have already informally done this with andie for several guys... hm. for instance sometimes grasshoppers are just called "knees". more rudely, we call box elder bugs "boring bugs" bc out of the corner of one's eye they tend to look like any number of significantly more interesting bugs. then, the disappointment thst it's just this guy who's barely even rare in winter....
33. how your partner feels about bugs. andie used to be pretty bad with many bugs ESPECIALLY spiders! the first real crack in the arachnophobia was learning that spiders move like That because they use hydraulics to extend their muscles. and now she loves bugs very much...
43. which bugs do you think have the silliest faces? there's so much competition..... but perhaps the partridge bug....

noooooo shit there’s so many buggo questions…..all of 6-10 if you can
Already did 6, but the rest-
7. if you could have any bug body part, what would it be? why? probably just have to be boring and say wings.
8. what's the neatest bug you've seen in person? I think solifuges are definitely up there (I've only seen them... 4 times ever? if that?), also this year I saw a scorpion in the wild for the first time :>. i have this vague sense there's something im totally forgetting though.
9. thoughts on entomophagy? valid to eat bugs. I don't really buy it as an animal suffering lessener though, because... you have to kill so many eg grasshoppers to equal the amount of food you get from killing one (1) deer?
10. do you have any pet bugs? i DONT and I am tbh kind of too scared to because i think I'd get like, incredibly devastated if they died for any care failure reasons.

1, 3, 4, 6!
what's your favorite bug? while i may have just posted RED LONGHORN MILKWEED BEETLE (Tetraopes species) as my favorite insect, by a more expansive definition of bug, spiders are included. ....then that requires narrowing down a favorite spider and that's, like, impossible.
3. what is your favorite order in Insecta? ...okay, that's really hard... there's part of me that's tempted to say hymenoptera, but that feels a little ??hypocritical?? when im SO bad at identifying bees. But there's tons of good wasps out there, many good bees (who i can't identify outside of bumblebees....), many ants. also sawflies with the cutest baby award.
4. do you have a favorite member within Chelicerata? every spider ever and tbh a lot of the other chelicerates too okay uhhh maybe I'll just be boring and say like, bold jumping spider? any wolf with babies on her back. any geolycosa. outside of spiders, it's always super exciting to see a solifuge!!
6. favorite song that mentions or includes a bug? YOUR HEART IS ETERNAL.... LIKE A BEEEEEEEEEEE IN AMBER.... (which is to say Message in the Amber by Amorphis)

though irt last post I do also want to reiterate that I do not believe the solution is 'just getting rid of any positions of power (bc power innately corrupts tm)' because. you can't. you actually can't do that. coordination structures for the 8 billion people who live on earth inevitably involve various elements of power!
it is NEITHER
-kill all rich people bc they're fundamentally inhuman
NOR
-prevent anyone from ever attaining any kind of power bc this will transform them into fundamentally inhuman
but instead
-actually people are people regardless of amount of money or power held, or ethnicity, or gender, or or or. and people are very capable of evil. but they are also capable of good. that's like kind of a whole thing, that people can and do make choices that have various effects on the world around them.

I could go on forever but my point is that a lot of leftists hold this cognitively dissonant belief system that requires them to believe that no one would ever act selfishly or out of irrational hatred for others if only all their needs were met, while simultaneously blaming all the world's problems on a class of people who have all their needs met and yet continue to perpetuate harm. And in order to make these two discordant sets of beliefs work together, it requires believing that "The Rich" are fundamentally, genetically different than Normal Working People, and behave differently and more selfishly than Normal Working People do or would when given that same power. And when one starts believing that The Elites are fundamentally, secretly inhuman and different than Normal Working People, it always, always circles around to blaming The Jews.
