Artist Profile: Danny Brown Hometown: Detroit Latest Project: XXX Am I the only one who misses Danny Brown. It’s not like he’s actually disappeared I know he’s been doing features and I’ve seen a few songs pop up. I think I’m just waiting for an album. Not a mix-tape. I will admit when I saw Danny Brown for the first time I thought “that nigga is a crackhead." But he is not - he seems do most other drugs but not crack. Though people were raving about him I was scared, I did not want to listen to another weed album. To be honest it was a flashback to when someone told me about this amazing new rapper called Wiz Khalifa (*eyeroll) and I was not so amazed. Anyway I realise that lumping artists together can often disadvantage you, I miss out on this project for three entire months. Basically I watched some interviews (don’t ask why) which lead me to think “that nigga is a cool dude." He’s seemed very down to earth. Now I am aware that crap has nothing to do with the quality of the music, but it made me want to listen. And I have to say XXX is one of my favourite projects of all time. It’s no surprise that he’s lyrical. But fucking hell at times it’s off the chart. There are numerous times when I thought wait…….did……he just…..say…..what I think he said. Shit. I know it’s an older project but to me in 2013 it’s still a refreshing. For one the content. I’m not saying he touches on subjects we’ve never heard before there are drugs, sex, the industry, hood struggles, money and sex all up in there. However these subjects to me are tackled in creative way especially in songs like ‘Radio Song’ and ‘Lie4.’ It’s comedy. Danny Brown definitely has comedic timing and his sense humour shines through the entire mix-tape and it’s consuming. I also thought the way he approached his “drug life" was beyond realistic he addresses the good times, the shit and the fears that he personally has experienced without promoting drug use or coming off like a governmental anti-drug campaign. ‘30’ was one of my favourite tracks with a kind of mood change in which he notes the fear of not succeeding within music, dying before the next XXX, not knowing his daughter and being self-assured whilst others doubt him. These times you feel like there are old struggles and new struggles interacting within Danny Brown making him ridiculously………human. Rappers do have personas which they play up to. Yet there is a way to do this without being a cliche or portraying an untouchable store bought image. To be honest I’m going to keep going on and on. But I think you just need to listen. You’ll either love it or hate it. But to those who know of this mix-tape, what do you guys think?

Artist Profile Name: Chance The Rapper Hometown: Chicago Latest Project: Acid Rap Ok I will admit I’m picky when it comes to rappers that I will really LISTEN to and follow. So for the last three years I’ve listened to the same artists CONSISTENTLY, so consistently sometimes I wanna slap myself. Then I came across Acid Rap and I passed it by. Chance’s feature on Gambino’s Royalty was one of my favourites (hence why on my old blog it was like in the favourites of every month.) But to be honest it was exam season and I don’t listen to new mix-tapes/albums while revising, too fucking distracting. I think Chance has a very “unique" flow not that I haven’t ever heard a flow or voice like his (Wayne does anyone else hear it) but he definitely utilises it more so than others. Which a rapper should do regardless but it’s just something I noted. He is lyrical. Like he just is. I’m not saying you’ll have to look up shit but every time I listened I picked up something new. Im probably just slow though. Furthermore I liked Chance The Rapper’s hooks and the singing. To me the rapping and singing seemed quite seamless within both verses and hooks. But I will say its not for everyone though it’s not as abrasive or unpitched (that is not a word) as say Kid Cudi’s vocals. But I know some people just don’t enjoy rappers singing on their hooks/choruses or at all. The singing brought a couple of songs to forefront for me personally. I also really enjoyed the features I don’t feel anyone lagged beyond. Though I will say I’m not 100% about Action Bronson’s verse for some reason I thought the beat was gonna change up and he was going to go ape shit but he was very relaxed. On the other hand I’m already draining ‘Favourite Song’ I just love that song and the Gambino feature. No more said. I also loved and was surprised by Twista’s feature. There were also two artists that were new to me Vic Mensa and Noname Gypsy (Lost was another favourite) but their features really caught my attention. The intro was another strong point it really set up the tone of the entire album but for some reason I wasn’t like crazy about the outro, it was a little long for my small brain. I should also say the production really interested me especially when I had headphones in, keep me engaged and brought a lot of colour to the album. To be honest I could go on and on but in conclusion I love this project. Chance is in the vault. I appreciate rappers that exercise their creative muscles resulting in what I consider good music. What do you guys think?
