Saebyeok stepped onto the court, the scorching sun against her skin as the crowd erupted in applause. Every single eye in the stadium seemed to be drawn to her, captivated by the effortless way she carried herself. Saebyeok seemed to have this ability to command attention without even trying, her presence alone enough to make a whole room stop.
This was the biggest game of her season, and for good reason. This one held something extra. It was against you, her biggest competitor, the one competitor who could keep up with her. Fans adored both of you, drawn to your opposite styles—her quiet confidence and fluid movement, your sharp movements and lively personality.
Though you two couldn’t be more different, when you played together, the two of you fit together somehow. It wasn’t just a game to decide who was the best—it was the comparison on who was better, of personalities, of worlds colliding in front of an audience who couldn’t tear their eyes away.
Saebyeok’s eyes followed your every movement as you walked onto the court-waving at the fans that adored you. Then, you looked over at Saebyeok, giving her a smile. She wasn’t sure if it was a, “good luck” or a “I think i’m going to win” smile. Either way, it irritated her.
Saebyeok tuned out the fans, only hearing the bouncing of the tennis ball. When Saebyeok hit it back at you, you hit it back every time, no matter the power she put into it. “Someone looks tense, this is just warmup.” You remarked , tone friendly enough that it seemed playful. She just gripped her racket harder, she wasn’t going to even spare you a word.
When the game had started, you served first. Your serve was just as powerful and precise as Saebyeok remembered. Saebyeok wasn’t worried, even if you had beat her before, she’d beat you more. So, she returned every hit, and you returned all of hers. The game was long, intense, and passionate. Everyone one's eyes were glued to either you or Saebyeok, the game forgotten in their eyes. Then, Saebyeok won the set, she had beat you. It was fair anyways, you beat her last season, it was her turn.
When Saebyeok went to pack up her things, she couldn’t stop her eyes drifting to you-where you were looking up at the stands with fans, signing things. That stupid smile still on your face, even after you lost. When you turned around, Saebyeok’s eyes met yours for just a second, then they moved back down to her bag.
Saebyeok practically stormed out of there, ignoring her coach congratulating her. How was it that she won, but you still had something over her? Saebyeok got into a cab, going to the only place she would find comfort.
As she stepped out onto the court, she felt an emotion she couldn’t quite place, not yet anyway. The ball machine shot balls straight at her, almost the way you hit them at her. Saebyeok let her frustrations out through her swings, why couldn’t she stop thinking about you. What broke her out of her overwhelming thoughts, was your voice. This had to be a joke.
“You're really practicing? You should be celebrating.” You said, with a teasing smile. Saebyeok’s head spun towards you, confusion written all over her face. “Well, you're here too aren’t you?” Saebyeok retorted back sharply, the sound of her voice catching you by surprise. Of course, you had heard her talk, just not to you.
“I didn’t win though.” You smiled, tilting your head. Saebyeok just let out a soft hum, her gaze moving down you then returning to your eyes. Your eyes widening slightly, did she really just check you out? Kang Saebyeok, your competitor, just checked you out-and she wasn’t even trying to hide it.
Saebyeok watched as all your playful teasing and confidence left, a smirk making its way onto her face. Now, she finally held the upper hand, she was in control. “You going to stand there or come play?” Saebyeok said, her tone taunting. You cleared your throat, giving her a small nod, walking to the other side of the net. She almost wanted to laugh, where was the girl whom she played earlier?
As Saebyeok hit the ball, you hit it back. But, your hits were lacking the sharpness from earlier, you almost looked distracted. “Don’t tell me you're letting me win?” Saebyeok smirked, twisting her racket in her hand.
“No, i’m just tired from earlier.” You huffed, lying through your teeth. The truth was, you were distracted. How were you supposed to play, when she was looking at you like that a few minutes ago? It made it impossible to keep your eye on the ball, when all you wanted to do was look at her.
When Saebyeok had won the set, she went up to the net to hand you the tennis balls. As she handed them to you, you could feel her cold fingers against your palm. This was on purpose, she wanted to get you distracted, she wanted you to feel the way her touch lingered. You kept eye contact with her, as she turned around walking back to the line, with that cocky smirk. Saebyeok was enjoying this, she found your one weakness. She found a way to throw you off, just like you had every time you managed to keep your friendly persona, no matter what.
“I need a break.” You announced, sitting on the floor, drinking your water. Pull yourself together, this is the same girl who's supposed to be your competitor. You could feel her taking the seat next to you, her presence alluring and looming. The only sound was both of you trying to catch your breath, her breath hot against the back of your neck. “Come on, we barely got started. Don’t tell me your tired already?” Saebyeok said, looking at you from the corner of her eye. This time she one hundred percent, was taunting you.
“I told you, i’m tired from our game earlier.” You finally looked up at her, rolling your eyes. When your eyes met hers, you realized just how close the two of you were sitting.
“Really? It seems to me, like you're distracted. Are you distracted?” Saebyeok smirked, her voice so intimate and quiet.
You couldn’t do anything but let out a shaky sigh. Then, you watched her eyes flick from your eyes, to your lips. Saebyeok was unapologetically staring at your lips, and you didn’t even mind. The tension was thick and you swear she could feel your heart race.
“It’s nice, hearing you so quiet. You talk too much, you should be like this more often.” Saebyeok muttered, the pad of her thumb tracing your jawline. You couldn’t form a coherent sentense, it was all too much. Where had this side of her come from? Not that you were complaining.
The game and both of your rackets, were long forgotten. Saebyeok was enjoying watching you squirm. “What would all your fans think? Seeing their star like this, with me?” Her smirk growing more, eyes locked on yours. You had no words to say, no thoughts but her. So, doing what any sane person would do in this situation, having this attractive girl in front of you, you kissed her. Your hands gripped her shirt, trying to pull her impossible closer. Saebyeok didn’t miss a beat, one hand on the back of your hand and the other on your waist.
All the pent up frustration against each other and all the tension, was being released into the kiss. You could still feel her smirk against your lips, she would’ve done this sooner if this was all it took to get the upper hand.
Saebyeok broke the kiss, tracing her thumb over your bottom lip. Without another word, she stood up walking away with her stuff. So, you sat there, confused and flustered. Did that really just happen? You kissed your biggest rival, on the court?
When you got home that night, you weren’t expecting a follow and a message from Saebyeok. “See you next game.” She might have won that time, but you always had next game.

traces of you - kang saebyeok
Tumblr media
synopsis: saebyeok was always just out of reach, so distant yet so with you. maybe thats why you can’t say no, when she texts you in the dead of night asking if your up. then is at your door, and every time you let her in, she always lets herself out.
warnings: very angsty
a/n: i was in denial writing this, my baby would never!! please enjoy the saddest thing i’ve ever written ! xoxo ivy
Tumblr media
going to bed next to saebyeok and waking up with her gone-that was the way it went. you weren’t even sure if she left early in the morning or right after you feel asleep. either way, it didn’t matter, both ways still hurt the same. feeling abandoned, time and time again. it was what you signed up for, every time you answered those stupid two am texts.
so why did you keep inviting her over? maybe because you couldn’t say no to her, or maybe because you didn’t always make the wisest choices that late at night-but you knew the real reason. you hoped one day it would be different, you would wake up and she would be there. one day, she would want more then midnight hookups. the chance of that happening was so very slim, almost impossible. so why should you answer the text she just sent you? well, because there was still that small chance that she would choose you this time.
you stand up, at the quiet and familiar knock. you could imagine how she looked, her bangs sticking to her forehead, hands shoved in her pockets. there was something so, alluring about saebyeok. something that always made you want more, something that was so elusive about her. sometimes, you had her, she was with you. not off with somebody else, not off doing anything else. you felt like you were trying to hold onto water, her just slipping out of your grasp. saebyeok was always just out of reach.
when you opened the door, and she stood with that stupid smirk-that you wanted to kiss off her face. saebyeok was so effortless, she didn’t even have to try-the desire for her never flamed out.
you had stupidly let her in, and she waltzed right in. saebyeok threw herself on your couch, making herself right at home. you almost wanted to scoff, she looked so comfortable-so content. if she was so content, then why did she refuse to stay? instead of saying anything, you offered her tea. “sure, thanks baby.” saebyeok hummed, her stupid smirk still on her face. it was almost as if she knew what she was doing, calling you baby, making you fall for her all over again.
you set the tea down, and took the seat on the couch next to her. your eyes followed her every movement, the way she gripped the teacup, the way the tension left her shoulders gradually. “good?” you mumbled, trying to speak over the sound of your own thoughts.“good.” saebyeok hummed, eyes locked on yours.
“how have you been?” saebyeok muttered, tucking a stray hair behind your ear. she looked at you, like you were the only one in the world. she listened, like there was no place she’d rather be. “good, i got that new job.” you said softly, a small smile making it’s way on your face. you knew, deep inside, you knew-that whatever was happening now, it didn’t make up for abandonment.
saebyeok could make you smile harder then you ever have, or she could make you cry, harder then you ever have. it was pathetic, that you let her have this much of a hold on your emotions. maybe deep inside, she knew that. saebyeok knew, that you were so wrapped around her finger-she could do this forever and you’d still wait.
“i’m proud of you. you deserve it, you know that right?” saebyeok said, eye flicking from your lips to your eyes. how could this be the same women, who hurt you time and time again?
you couldn’t bring yourself to respond-afraid you might burst into tears. so instead, you settled for a small nod.
“your always so stressed.” saebyeok says, her fingertips dancing across your arm. “am i?” you squeaked, voice coming out smaller then intended. “mhm. need to let me take care of you.” she hummed, her voice taunting.
you felt the familiar hand creeping up your side, to the back of your neck. saebyeok rubbed the back of your neck, in a comforting way-before she gently pulled you forward. the feeling of saebyeok’s lips, were something you wanted to lock in a box and hold onto for bad days. since you knew, she wouldn’t be there, not when you need her the most. the kiss was gentle and warm, it was so saebyeok. in this moment, it was perfect. it was just the both of you, simply existing-and for these moments, you could forget. forget that she would be gone in the morning. forget the stress of the day. forget that to her, you only existed in these moments.
so, the next morning when you woke up-it wasn’t a surprise that the bed next to you was empty. saebyeok was gone, once again. no trace of her but the crinkled sheets in the spot she once was. it took you a minute to even remember, if she was actually ever there the night before. saebyeok was there, and everything was perfect. the sad part, you would take the heartbreak every time, just for more of those perfect moments. it killed you, it truly did. you would never fully have saebyeok, just traces of her. the problem, was facing reality. and just like all the other times, she became a distant memory, that was until the next text.

Could you do a Saebyeok x reader where the reader thinks that Saebyeok actually doesn't like them at first, but once they see how she is around other ppl, they realize she's actually really sweet with them?
Tumblr media
synopsis: you felt silly for having a crush on a girl who only tolerated you, because you had a mutual friend. you didn’t notice the way saebyeok was different with you. not until, you see how she is with everyone but you.
warnings: none just fluff !
a/n: this is so cutie, it took me a while but i hope you like it ! xoxo ivy
Tumblr media
you didn’t notice it as first, the way the hardened girl softened just slightly with you. every-time you went to see ji-yeong and saebyeok was there-she didn’t give you the feeling that she liked you. if anything, you assumed it was the opposite. when you greeted her and all she did was hum or nod, it was frustrating. but never, ever could you have expected her to more then tolerate you. it wasn’t enough to know. she’d never given you more, or so you thought.
not to mention, the fact that even with the little saebyeok gave you, it couldn’t help the bubbling feelings towards the stoic girl. the way her hair was always effortlessly messy and perfect, the way she listened-not just halfway paying attention, she listened. she was irritating that way. making you have feelings for her, just to disregard your presence, all the time.
when you called ji-yeong to see if she was free and she was-you agreed to meet at a cafe. when ji-yeong walked in, what you weren’t expecting was for saebyeok to be following right behind her. saebyeok loomed behind ji-yeong like she was reminding me of her, taunting you.
as the two of them sat down, you smiled at both of them-acting like you weren’t in love with the girl who barley acknowledges you. it’s pathetic really.
ji-yeong easily falls into conversation with you and you try to pay attention-you really do. it’s hard though when saebyeok sits there, looking so indifferent, so casual-but still stupidly attractive.
when the food gets called to the counter, saebyeok stands up to get it, letting ji-yeong finish whatever wild story she was telling. you nod and casually respond to ji-yeong, but thats not what your focused on. there is a girl, standing oddly close to saebyeok, too close. “excuse me?” the girl chirps out, looking at saebyeok, to which saebyeok glares at the girl and steps slightly farther. “could i get your number?” you overhear the girl ask saebyeok.
you can’t even pretend to be focused on ji-yeong anymore. “hold on a sec ji.” you mumble, trying to hear what saebyeok will say back.
“you don’t even know me. i don’t give my number to strangers, no. ” saebyeok glares, her tone remaining composed. saebyeok grabs the drinks, walking back over. saebyeok’s eyes meet yours, she knows you’ve been watching the whole time, and she’s enjoying it. her lips upturn in the slightest bit, she definitely was taunting you.
you have to physically pull your eyes away from the girl, sitting in dismay. saebyeok takes the cherry out of her drink, setting it down on the napkin next to you. her eyes are oddly soft-almost vulnerable.
“hey, everytime i ask for your cherry, you tell me no and eat it! that’s so not fair.” ji-yeong groans at saebyeok, but then ji-yeong gives her a knowing glance and smirk. oh my gosh, ji-yeong was never going to let this go. right as ji-yeong is about to say something else, saebyeok interrupts her staring down at her drink. “drink your drink.” which causes ji-yeong to let out a small laugh.
did saebyeok really never give ji-yeong her cherries? did saebyeok like them? why would she give them to you? i mean, she knows you like cherries but saebyoek barely tolerates you. unless, she more then tolerates you.
saebyeok watches you, as you begin to put the pieces together. the way she treated you differently. it was true, yes saebyeok wasn’t the best at expressing her emotions. especially speaking them, but what she could do was show them. she thought she had been pretty obvious, she let you borrow her favorite jacket one time. one time, ji-yeong touched it and she didn’t talk to her for 2 weeks. in saebyeok’s eyes, she couldn’t have been any clearer. but you, had thought she despised you. now, thinking about the little things she did it all started to make sense. maybe the cold girl melted just the tiniest for you, and even if it wasn’t much, it was a start.

be my valentine
Tumblr media
synopsis: saebyeok didn’t know that she had to ask to be your valentine. how was she supposed to know, didn’t you being her girlfriend automatically make you her valentine?
warnings: fluff !
a/n: happy valentines day everyone!! very short fic but please enjoy ! xoxo ivy
Tumblr media
on february 13th, when saebyeok stepped into the tiny shared apartment, you actually managed to catch her off guard. there you were, flowers and chocolate neatly arranged on the table, balloons in hand, your smile brighter than ever.
“kang saebyeok, will you be my valentine?” you asked, your tone playful, your eyes sparkling.
saebyeok blinked at you, her expression a mix of bewilderment and amusement, and you couldn’t help but let out a small laugh at the look on her face.
“what’s wrong with you?” she asked, setting down her groceries. there was no irritation in her voice, just pure confusion.
“just answer the question, sae,” you teased, rolling your eyes while your smile never wavered. you extended the flowers toward her, your gesture earnest.
she paused for a beat, then mumbled, “i thought i was already your valentine. doesn’t being your girlfriend make me your valentine?” she stepped closer to you, her tone soft and questioning.
you chuckled, feeling your heart swell. “you are my girlfriend, but i wanted to ask anyway. so it’s official.” your smile widened as you felt her slip her hand into yours, the warmth of her touch grounding you. “this is sweet.” saebyeok mutters, her tone genuine and appreciative-as she buries her head in your neck, pressing her lips into your skin. you smile letting out a hum in response.
after you did this, saebyeok felt guilty she hadn’t even considered it. she was going to make sure you had the best valentines she could give you.
the next morning, when you woke up and walked into the living room, what you weren’t expecting was a giant teddy bear-and your girlfriend.
saebyeok stood next to the flowers, the bear and she was holding a box of chocolate. “happy valentines day baby.” saebyeok says, giving you that small shy smile. she did all this for you? it was something you could tell, was out of saebyeok’s comfort zone. but she didn’t care, she did it for you. the smile on your face, was more then enough for her to forget about the embarrassment.
you walked up to her, the biggest smile on your lips. when you pressed a soft kiss against her lips, she was quick to return in wrapping her hand around your waist. “you like it?” she muttered against your lips. “i love it.” you smiled softly up at her. “yeah?” saebyeok asked, voice low and raspy. “yeah. thank you.” you hummed.
the two of you enjoyed the rest of the day together, as official valentines.

𝐈𝐍 𝐒𝐏𝐈𝐓𝐄 𝐎𝐅 𝐔𝐒
Chapter 2
synopsis: two girls the same age meet on a train and both have the same destination. while the obvious similarities, the two of you are polar opposites. you, the lively, outgoing, pink-loving girl. saebyeok, the stoic, layed-back, and serene girl. does it turn into friends, best friends, or something else?
kang sae-byeok x fem!reader
warnings: none !
a/n: rewatching squid game, and why would they kill fine shyt wtf </3 anyways lmk any ideas bc im not too sure how i want this to end xoxo ivy
Tumblr media
When Saebyeok stepped out of the train station, she felt the crisp against her skin. She was happy to be off that stuffy train and away from the overly-hyper girl sitting next to her. Saebyeok didn’t want to tell you, but she was also headed to Seoul for college, she was a music major.
Saebyeok shoved her things in and then hopped in a cab. She was headed to her dorm for the first time. She hoped her roommate wouldn’t be loud, annoying, or nosy. Someone more like herself. Someone who would just let her be.
When she stepped on the college campus, she felt an odd sense of something she couldn’t identify. Nerves? Excitement? Maybe both? Either way, it was real and it was happening.
Saebyeok unlocked the door, opening it up to see two empty beds and a bare room. Maybe she lucked out and didn’t have a roommate. She gives a soft hum looking around, it was nice. She’d better get used to it since she would be living here for the next 9 months.
She walked to the bed on the left, and set her stuff down next to it. Saebyeok kicks off her boots somewhere around the room, sitting on her bed. Just when she’s about to close her eyes and get much needed sleep, she hears the keys in the keyhole.
Saebyeok’s eyes shoot open. Why would her roommate also get here this late? But, what catches her by surprise, is you. She watched you drag your heavy pink suitcase in disbelief. Was this some kind of prank? Out of everyone that could’ve been her roommate, it had to be her?
The perky girl from the train, the one who wouldn’t let her sleep, you. Saebyeok had gotten a loud, annoying and nosy roommate. It felt like the universe was against her. What did she do to deserve this? Or maybe she was just really unlucky?
You hadn’t seen her yet, still tugging on your suitcase to get it to budge out of the doorway. When you finally make it into the room, you look up seeing the girl from the train, Saebyeok. Instead of the blank face she wore on the train, she wore a frustrated scowl.
“Mystery girl! It’s me from the train, remember?.” You say as if it was an option for her to forget you. Trust her, if it was an option she would forget.
“I remember.” She grumbles, leaning her head back against the wall.
You can practically feel the tension rolling off of her, the kind of vibe that says "I did not sign up for this." Her arms cross tightly over her chest as she glances over at you, clearly not thrilled with the situation. You can tell she’s trying her best to stay composed, but the eye roll she gives says enough about how she feels.
“Well, I guess this is it, huh?” you say with a bright, almost teasing smile, trying to lighten the mood. It’s clear she’s not into the idea of small talk, but you’re determined to make this situation a little less awkward. Your determined to make Saebyeok like you, even just tolerate you.
She doesn't respond at first, just sort of watches you struggle with your suitcase for a second before she finally speaks up.
“Why are you so... loud?” Saebyeok mutters under her breath, though it’s loud enough for you to hear. The bluntness catches you off guard, but you’re not backing down that easily. She’s obviously irritated, but maybe—just maybe—you can crack that shell she’s got going on.
You take a deep breath, giving her a grin that’s borderline obnoxious but good-natured. “Guess I’m just built this way. Some people are magnets for trouble. Lucky for you, I’m stuck here with you.”
She narrows her eyes at you, but there’s no real malice behind it—just exhaustion and frustration. "Great," she replies sarcastically, her voice dripping with a kind of dry humor that surprises you a little. "Just what I needed."
“Just keep the noise down,” she warns, though there’s a trace of something softer in her tone.
“Promise,” you say, holding up a hand like a mock oath. “No loud music, no random deep conversations at 3 a.m. I’ll be your silent, non-annoying roommate.”
Her eyebrows furrow as you said that, were you even capable of being silent? “Better be,” she mutters, leaning back into her spot against the wall again. But this time, the scowl seems a little less intense, maybe even a little more resigned.
“Come on, this is totally a sign that we have to be friends.” you laugh, moving to set your suitcase down on the bed. “If I didn’t know better, I would say you're starting to like me already.” You say, in an almost a teasing way.
“Don’t get ahead of yourself, this isn’t a sign. This is just me being unlucky.” Saebyeok grumbles, obviously not too happy with the situation.
“We’ll see, I have a way of making people like me.” You say, smiling sitting on your bed to sleep.
Saebyeok doesn’t respond, but at least she doesn’t seem actively plotting how to escape either. It’s a start.

my hero
Tumblr media
synopsis: kang no-eul doesn’t have much to look forward to in her life, but what she does have is a library. a place so quiet and serene that her problems slip away the moment she steps in. she could get lost in the words on the pages. that was until - she spotted a cute stranger in distress.
warnings: fluff wc: 1.3k
a/n: i need her chemically omg shes adorable and i had this idea brewing..xoxo ivy
Tumblr media
kang no-eul walked into the quiet and warm bookstore. the bell ringing as she pushed open the door, darting to the horror section. this section never failed her, unlike the thriller section which occasionally there would be a waste of a few hours. no-eul liked reading horror, it always reminded her that even if she has it bad, it could be worse.
her fingers trailing across the spine’s of the horror books. “read that, read that, and oh that.” no-eul mumbles tiredly. maybe it was time for her to find a different hobby, instead of sitting in this dim library, reading every horror book that laid on the shelves.
then a red book catches her eye, she tugs it off the shelf, the bold black print catching her eye. she shrugs half-heartedly, walking to her usual spot: a small, comfortable, and brown chair. no-eul lets out a sigh of relief as she takes a seat, the tension in her shoulders fading slightly.
she was tired. no, she was exhausted. no-eul wears that hot bunny suit, all day, 6 times a week. she’s frustrated and upset, but most of all she’s drained. whenever she’s in the library, it's one of those rare moments, she can just breathe. no-eul doesn’t have to worry about getting to work, going to sleep in her car, just her in this library. her library.
no-eul opens up the book, biting her chapped bottom lip, in concentration. she gets through about half the book, before she decides to call it a night. she stands up grabbing her bag and just as she’s about to put the book back on the shelf, something catches her eye. a girl, you. sitting by herself, papers and notebooks scattered everywhere around.
your sitting on a little couch on the side of the library. the book is one required for your english course, and safe to say the most complicated book ever. your eyebrows furrowed, as you try to understand the hidden metaphors and themes.
no-eul looks at you, she doesn’t know why, but something about you draws her attention. she shoves the book back on the shelf, walking around the bookshelf to glance at you from the side. nobody is usually here at this hour. no-eul's curiosity seems to be getting the better of her. her gaze lingers on you as she walks around the shelf, trying to make sense of the strange pull she feels. the quiet of the library amplifies the tension in the air, and it’s clear she’s both intrigued and a bit cautious.
as you drop your pen away from you, you let out a tiny groan. when you go to pick it up, you see a hand extended towards you, holding the pen in their palm.
as you meet eyes with this stranger, you see it’s a girl about your age. a very attractive girl, for that matter. her hair falling right on her shoulders, eyes sharp but have an almost soft gaze on you. you take the pen, trying to form a coherent sentence. “thanks..” you mumble, eyes locked on hers. no-eul gives you a soft nod, bringing her hand back to her pocket.
no-eul wants to walk away, really she does. she’s tired and wants nothing more then to sleep the day off. but something stops her - the exhausted and drained look, that’s on your face. she knows that look, she wears that look everyday. what kind of person would she be if she didn’t help the tired pretty girl?
no-eul clicks her tounge, eyes darting down to book you hold. no-eul was a lot smarter then she got credit for. “can i see?” she says, voice raspy after not using it for a while. you, of course, nod. why would you decline much needed help from this insanely attractive girl?
no-eul takes the book and the seat next you. “i’ve read this before, what do you need help with?” she hands the book back to you gently. “i have a paper due about the message that author is trying convey. clearly, it’s not conveying very well to me.” you sigh leaning back against the couch.
no-eul just lets out a soft hum, she picks up the rubric for the paper. her eyes glancing across your face, she could tell that you pretty much rather do anything else. “what’s your name?“ you ask the girl who just totally saved you. “no-eul. what’s your name?” she asks, repeating your question, her voice gentle. you tell her your name, and she hums having to pull her eyes away from you to get to work.
the two of you work on the paper, no-eul trying to guide you in the right direction without doing it for you. no-eul finds her gaze lingering on your face for entirely too long. your gaze lingering on her hands.
the night passes by, the air conditioner turning on and off. the only reason the two of you stop, is because the librarian tells you both it’s closing time. no-eul helps you gather your stuff walking out silently behind you. hands stuffed in her pockets.
“please let me buy you food, you’ve helped me so much. it’s really the least i can do.” you say, practically pleading with her. if she hadn’t helped you, you would’ve probably gotten frustrated and gave up.
no-eul hesitates, but she can see how you probably won’t give up till you convince her. but she wasn’t going to pass free food from this sweet girl. “okay."
you give her a smile walking to the nearest 24/7 convenience store, those being the only things open. the automatic doors sliding open, “pick out anything you want seriously, i owe you everything.” you smile at her. no-eul looks at you, giving you a small upside-down smile. it was awkwardly adorable.
after you pay, the both of you sit at a table outside. the quiet night is peaceful, not needing any words. as no-eul takes slow bites, her eyes remain on you. she can’t help but fixate on you. the way your hair falls down your shoulders, the way your lips up-turned every time you took a bite. no-eul saw something in you that was taken from her a long time ago. it made her want to protect you from all the scary things in the world. she knew you were perfectly capable of taking care of yourself, but she couldn’t help it.
“thank you again for the help.” you mumble breaking the silence in between bites. no-eul nods, “it was nothing, i enjoyed it.” no-eul’s eyes weren’t on your eyes, they were on your lips. the cute girl you met at the library, was staring at your lips? after she had helped you with an seemingly impossible paper, no-eul was a gift.
“if uh.. if you ever need help again, i’d be happy to do it.” no-eul says, making her move.
“really?” you smile, sliding your phone across the table. “give me your number. so i can contact you, ...for help.” you said the last part sounding unsure. did you want help in future? yes. did you also just want to give no-eul your number? also yes.
no-eul types in her number, handing your phone back. no-eul could feel her hand graze yours, as you took the phone back. “what if i want to just see you?” she swallowed, not breaking eye contact with you.
“i’d like that, i’ll text you.” you murmured, the tension in the air thick. your brain feeling fuzzy from her gaze.
“hope to see you soon, pretty.” no-eul says, as she stands up, a hint of teasing in her voice. when she says this, you swear your heart actually dropped. where was this side of her when she was helping you with your paper?
no-eul disappears into the dark night, leaving you standing there confused and flustered. it only left you wanting more, from your pretty hero.

The wind blew outside your window, a calm grounding sound. You packed your bags, a sense of realization dawned on you. This was going to be the last time in this tiny dorm room, that you called home. Okay, maybe you were bring a little dramatic, you only lived here for 9 months. Still, it was a bittersweet goodbye. Bitter, because you had to say goodbye to your life here. All your friends, the little cafes and restaurants, everything. Sweet, because you got into your dream college to study fashion.
It still didn’t help the way you and your best friend, Kang Mi-na had to say goodbye for now. You packed your bag, tucking everything you could fit in the overfilled suitcase. Pushing down with all your strength to get it to close, not wanting to leave anything behind. “You’ll call me right? I feel like your leaving me in the dust.” Mina huffed, throwing herself on your bed dramatically.
“Of course I will, everyday. And i’m not leaving you behind. You have to visit me, we can eat, shop, eat more.” You smile excitingly sitting next to her. There was a little pause.
“I’m going to miss you though.” You frowned looking at her.
“I’m only going to be a 2 hour train ride away, okay?” Mi-na rolls her eyes over you getting sentimental. Which in return just earns her a “let me sad” look from you.
“Come on, before you cry on me again.” She quipped, which earned her an elbow to the side. Mi-na picked up your pink suitcase, handing it to you. You climb off your bed, grabbing the suitcase, and linking arms with her as she walks you out.
The walk was quiet, the only sound was the wheels rolling on your suitcase. When the two of you arrived at the train station, she looked at you smiling. “Don’t do anything I would do.” Mi-na says trying to make this situation lighter.
You just throw your arms around her, holding back tears. “I’ll miss you.” You sniffle out.
She just laughs, “Yeah, i’ll miss you too. But, you're not going off to war. Now hurry up, before the train leaves you.” Mi-na says rolling her eyes playfully. You nod, walking quickly, waving as you're walking.
When you enter the train, you feel a strange sense of certainty. Call it you being an optimist, but you had a feeling that everything was happening for a reason. As you enter the busy train, most seats are full. There are mostly business men, or women and their children.
Then you spot a seat open, a girl who looks about your age. She has dark messy hair, with bangs framing her sharp features. The girl has a guitar next to her and headphones in, seemingly blocking out the world. She has this unapproachable look on her face, which just makes you all the more curious. Seeing as that would be the best seat for you, you walk up to her, usual smile on your face. “Excuse me, is this seat taken?” You point to the aisle seat next to her. She takes a moment, staring at you. The girls cold eyes, not returning your friendly expression in the slightest. When you don’t falter at the glare, she shrugs. Which to you is, “Of course, sit next to me. Let’s be friends too.”
You take the seat setting your stuff in front of you. You look at the girl from the corner of your eye, holding back the urge to start a conversation. The girl on the other hand, just turns back to the window, not even sparing you a glance. Your leg bouncing excitingly, your whole life is changing so of course you're eager to tell people about it. Being the girl you were, you talked enough for two people. Maybe even enough for a whole group?
“So where you headed?” You looked over at the girl trying to remain as contained you could manage. Her eye shot over to you quickly before looking back towards the window. So, not much of a talker, that’s okay. You cleared your throat before starting again. “I’m headed to Seoul, i’m going for college, i’m a fashion major.” You said with a smile, which earned you a sigh.
This is going to be the longest two hours ever. Sae-byeok thought to herself. Why does she always have to run into the loudest people when all she wants is quiet? Will she get any peace and quiet?Ji-yeong, had prepared her for this though, if she says quiet long enough then you’ll stop. “I’m..” Sae-byeok hears you say, she blocks it out waiting for you to take the hint.
After a few minutes she finally thinks that she’ll get the quiet she wants, until you pipe up again. “So, you have a name?” You smile, your curiosity still not satisfied.
Seriously, you're not done? Sae-byeok turns toward you, glaring once again. “Want me to guess your name?” You let out a small laugh at the mystery girl. Sae-byeok finally moves her gaze and looks over you. The first word that comes to mind is, perky. Way too perky.
“So where you headed?” You ask leaning back in your seat, sensing that she probably wasn’t going to give you her name right away. You look at her from the corner of your eye, mimicking her earlier. Sae-byeok debates to herself. Either she answers you, and you finally leave her alone or she doesn’t and you bother her the entire two hours. Sae-byeok deadpans you, speaking for the first time. “Seoul.” She answers as blandly as she possibly can. There is no way you keep the conversation going right?
You grin, pleased you finally got her to crack. You point your hand, to her guitar case. “You play guitar, that’s so cool. Are you going to Seoul to perform?” Sae-byeok's gaze follows your hand then she looks back at you. The answer is no, she will not get any peace and quiet this train ride.
Instead of answering this question, she groans, closing her eyes. Oh, so she’s really not a talker. You turn away from her thinking of how to pass the time. You reach into your pink tote bag, pulling out a sketch book, full of designs. Some of them dating back to high school. Flipping to the next empty page, you look over at the girl next to you. Sae-byeok's simple but edgy outfit catching your eye. The simple grey jeans, white tank top with a black leather jacket over it. Her outfit is not something you would wear, and that’s what made it grasp your interest.
You start sketching hunched over your lap, glancing at your seat-mate's accessories every few minutes. The quiet shuffling of sleeping passengers and of course, the business men on hushed phone calls. You finished the design, smiling to yourself and holding up the finished product to the dim train lights. “Here.” You smile, your voice more relaxed than before. Sae-byeok’s eyebrows furrow slightly as she turns away from the window, seeing you hold up a piece of paper. She doesn’t do anything right away, just looking. “Oh come on, I worked hard.” You laugh as if the mystery girl had just told the funniest joke. Although she does not seem very amused. Correction, she’s not amused at all.
Sae-byeok hesitantly takes the paper, unfolding it carefully. When she opens it to see a version of the outfit she currently has on. One of her eyebrows raises suddenly at you. You watched her carefully for her reaction, if someone was going to get this mystery girl to smile, it was going to be you. “Well..?” You grin leaning over on the shared arm rest, that sat between the both of you. “It’s good.” She mumbled under her breath. It was so quiet that if you would’ve been inhaling, you would’ve missed it entirely.
You smile proud to show off your work. “How old are you?” You pry, wanting to have a friend. Maybe if you get this girl to become your friend, Seoul won’t feel as lonely. But getting her to actually want to say more than two words to you seems very unlikely.
Sae-byeok moves her gaze from the sketch to you. “20” She says, cautiously.
“No way, me too! Going to the same place, and we’re the same age. You know what that means, right?” You laugh, playfully. Some of the other sleeping passengers, glared at you.
Sae-byeok did not in fact knew what that meant. She hoped it meant, after this both of you go your separate ways and move on. “What does it mean?” She questioned, but she already knew the answer.
“It means we have to stay friends.” You smile, implying the two of you were already friends. Which caused Sae-byeok to sigh, rubbing her temples. She wasn’t going to argue this, since apparently you had your mind set on it. Doesn’t mean that she was going to become your friend.
You smiled at her, feeling accomplished and sitting back against your seat. “So you going to tell me your name mystery girl?” You tilt your head, a hint of playfulness in your voice. Sae-byeok thinks for a second before murmuring. “Kang Sae-byeok.”
You smile, fighting back the urge to celebrate, not wanting to scare her off. Instead, you settle for a soft hum. “Suits you.”
Sae-byeok looks at you from the corner of her eye when you say this. She sees you finally starting to sleep. Finally peace and quiet. If all it took was her name for you to give her silence, she would’ve told you it the moment you sat in the empty seat. Instead, she takes advantage of this momentary silence.

heyy i was wondering if you Could do Sae byeok x reader Where Sae byeok is super clingy to reader. Like this Girl is CLINGY. So like she is hugging her sooo much whether it is hugging her at the neck, waist, hip, lifting her off the Ground and grabbing her ass 🫢, back hugging her, you name it and she is already in the position with you, Sae byeok is pulling her into her lap every second she gets, Sae byeoks kissing her non stop whether its on the lips, cheek, nose, jaw, neck or even readers top chest and back, and TRUST me this Girl loves to be behind reader and spoon her While she is watching some crap TV show (the two of you Fall asleep with the TV show playing in the back) but there is just one problem, gi hun is your older brother and he is not Happy seeing sae byeok All over you. Trust me he likes the fact that you two love each other but he is also over protective of you and doesnt want you to get hurt. And Sae byeok knows this but continues. And i am tell you that gi hun is not Happy seeing Sae byeok have her hands on your chest and ass meanwhile you are doing your makeup (you are standing infront of Sae byeok because the mirror is right behind her While she is sitting on a chair and has you in between her legs While her head and one of her hands are resting on your chest While her other Hand is resting on your ass.)
Thank you and have a Good Day or Night and you Can change anything if you would like!!
a/n: this is adorable stop. saebyeok is the clingiest girlfriend ever, you cannot change my mind.
warnings: just fluffy
clingy sae who follows right behind you (like walking on your heels) and her trying to act like she’s “just seeing what your doing”
walking in the cold, she just grabs your hand shoving it in her pocket. couldn’t have her girl freeze to death, could she?
eating dinner with her and gi-hun and him just watching the two of you with a careful glare. (maybe he’s a tiny bit jealous that your love life is better then is, so what).
saebyeok sitting on the couch with you between her legs, sprinkling soft kisses on your soft hair. her murmuring that you were gone so long. and all you did was go to get coffee.
always making excuses to be touchy without seeming clingy, “your hair was all over you face, i was fixing it.” “your necklace isn’t showing.” and her careful fingertips linger on your skin.
even though her face seems as if she’s doing the most boring thing ever, it’s just her being in denial. she actually likes being around you, and even if there is no talking she likes your presence and that scares her.
waking up next to her and sae just buries her face in your neck, lips dancing across you. one of her hand’s is lazily behind you and the other is thrown across your waist. whispering a small “i like you.” she has a hard time saying what she feels but she’s good at showing it. even though these words may seem small, they mean everything.
watching you try a new food or drink and watching for your reaction. “good?” she mumbles so quietly. when you nod your head, she gives you one of those small uncertain smiles. then tucking a loose strand of hair behind your head, pressing a soft kiss on your forehead.
when your on the phone with a friend, saebyeok's just sat beside you hand on your waist rubbing small circles in your hip. can’t really focus anymore, ending the call to put your head on her shoulder. which of course she pretends to be indifferent to, but she’s in just as much bliss as you.
when your upset her wiping your tears with the pad of her thumb. whispering, “just breathe baby.” “i got you.” her face softening, she hates seeing you upset.
when she’s reading a book and you put your head in her lap, her rolling her eyes. she’s not annoyed, sae would choose this over some stupid book any-day.
you sitting in her lap while you do your makeup, hand sprawled on your thigh. even if the two of you aren’t doing anything she just loves being with you. watches you with those sharp eyes while you do your makeup.
when you come to sit on the couch and leave room between the two of you, not thinking anything of it, she thinks about it. are you mad at her? did she do something? when you finally look over at her (it’s been 3 minutes) she looks like a sad kicked puppy. but she’s fine after she pulls you into her arms. “i’m not clingy” she mutters kissing along your neck. “seem pretty clingy to me sae.” you tease back.
gives the best hugs. her arms around your waist while yours are around her linked around her neck.
when walking in public, her arm around your waist fingers in your belt-loop. the world is a dangerous place, it’s just to keep you safe. totally not because she just likes holding you.
she just wants to hold you, that’s not clingy, right?

in it together
Tumblr media
synopsis: saebyeok enters the game and to her surprise she sees you. she had broken up with you since everything was getting too real for her. it had been a few months, will the games bring those feelings back?
warnings: normal squid game violence but happy ending
a/n: using the s2 rule where the players split the money if the vote wins bc im in denial about them dying. literally posting all my drafts
Tumblr media
when saebyeok joined the games the one thing she wasn’t planning on was seeing you there. you had been out of her life for a few months now, but here you were sitting against the wall looking like a sad puppy who had been kicked. how did you even end up in this place? saebyeok ponders to herself, how did you even collect enough debt that you would need to come here? a billion questions floated through her mind. what breaks her out of her thoughts is the glow from the lights of the piggy bank filling with money. one hundred million won per person who died in red light green light.
saebyeok walks over to you, her glare burning your skin. “why are you here?” she says in that low rumble that used to make you go woozy. by just listening to the tone of her voice, you would’ve thought that she was angry, but you know her better then that. when you look at her face, you see the way her eyebrows furrowed so very slightly. or the way her eyes were just even the tiniest bit sharper. you knew this look, worry.
“why are you here?” you shoot back, you knew saebyeok didn’t always do the most legal things but she shouldn’t be here just as much as you shouldn’t. she looks almost, just the slightest bit annoyed that you would ask her that. saebyeok doesn’t say anything she just takes a seat next to you on the floor. “you’ll die here.” saebyeok mutters not even looking at you. “then lets stick together.” you reply quietly back. she glances at you from the corner of her eye and in that moment you both knew that you couldn’t lose each other again.
during the next game, you looked over all the shapes carefully trying to decide which one you should choose. this was really life or death. saebyeok didn’t even give you a chance to walk over to a line, grabbing onto the sleeve of your jacket and pulling you to the triangle line. saebyeok had told sangwoo what she saw in the vent and he picked triangle. the game turned out to be dalgona and thank god she chose triangle.
during the riot, you couldn’t find saebyeok. it made you sick to your stomach to think about what could’ve happened. what if that thug had gotten to her? you were going to find somewhere to hide but then you feel that oh-so familiar hand pull you with her to a group of unfamiliar people. the rest of that night is blurry, everything happened so fast. but saebyeok was okay and that was what mattered. and you were okay and that was what mattered to saebyeok.
the next morning, you begin to familiarize yourself with these new faces. player 199, easily became someone you could call friend. he had this hope in his eyes that wasn’t easy to keep in a place like this. saebyeok on the other hand didn’t make an effort to talk to anyone in the group, she didn’t come to make friends. that doesn’t mean she wasn’t watching you 24/7. the others noticed it, the way her gaze softened when you talked to her. the way she walked behind you, like a guard dog.
when the next game had announced that everyone was to get in groups of 10. when everyone realized that you only needed 4 more people, sangwoo sent you and saebyeok to find someone and everyone else to find one person. he was very clear to find a man, not a woman. saebyeok wasn’t going to listen to a word coming out of his mouth, saebyeok led the way with you trailing behind her. she was looking over everyone, maybe judging them but none caught her eye. that was until she saw a girl sitting by herself on the stairs. she walked up the stairs, and when she walked back down she had now both of you trailing behind her. ji-yeong was curious about the two of you. the way you easily conversed with her while saebyeok looked as if she wanted to be anywhere else.
after your team had won tug-of-war, you couldn’t help but feel a sense of guilt. did those people really have to die so that your team could live? when the team walked back in, everyone was exhausted. the feeling of guilt was overcrowding the burning of your hands from the rope. saebyeok noticed this immediately, she picked up on your cues. so when you sat against the wall playing with a loose thread on your jacket she followed. “it’s not your fault.” saebyeok murmured, talking to you as if you would break into a million pieces. “i know, but-“ you tried to pull out the words that were running around your mind. and she let you, she sat there patiently and it brought back all those old feelings. the feelings you insisted were gone. but when she made you feel like you were the only one in the room, it was hard.
“we killed those people, they all had lives and now they’re over because of us.” you finally managed to get out, a shaky exhale leaving your dry lips. “it was them or us. we won and now we keep going.” saebyeok says truthfully. that was one of things you liked about saebyeok, she wasn’t one to sugarcoat things. you hadn’t even noticed that her hand had made it’s way on your wrist, her thumb rubbing small circles. you couldn’t bring yourself to respond to saebyeok just giving her a small nod and focusing on the way her comforting hand felt.
you and ji-yeong became fast friends, enjoying just the slightest bit of normalcy in this strange place. saebyeok on the other hand felt like she was babysitting, all the time. when the both of you were together you acted like children. “both of you be quiet.” saebyeok would say when you two would be up talking when all she wanted to do was sleep. she would think to herself, “have you idiots forgotten why your here?” although saebyeok liked seeing the way you laughed again, she hadn’t seen it since the two of you broke up.
when the vote had came she chose to stop the games. the prize money per-person was enough, the risk of loosing you wasn’t worth any amount of money. the majority ruled to stop the games. you felt a sigh of relief leaving your body. no more watching people die, no more fear that the girl you loved was going to die.
after the games things changed. saebyeok bought a small house. there lived saebyeok, cheol, you and ji-yeong. saebyeok had realized in the games that she couldn’t let you slip out of her grasp again. she almost lost you so many times in the games and it wasn’t going to happen again. you and saebyeok rekindled realizing that both of you were stupid to let it go. she couldn’t even remember the reason why the relationship ended. but she did know that both of you had love for each other and that was enough.
saebyeok lived simply, she went to work, took cheol to school and dealt with you and ji-yeong. she thought the both of you were bad in the games, out here it was so much worse. but she wouldn’t trade the chaos for anything. saebyeok liked seeing the way you were with cheol, it made her only love you more. saebyeok always showed you that she loved you, and you knew. even if it was just reaching for your hand when walking, or pressing a soft kiss on your forehead. and saebyeok could finally say she was happy.

for cheol
Tumblr media
synopsis: you work at the childrens home where Cheol lives and he takes a liking to you going as far as introducing you to his sister. what happens when the stoic girl begins to see why her little brother likes you so much?
warnings: mention of kids picking on Cheol.
a/n: thought this was so cute bc they deserve happiness !! also … are for your name!!
Tumblr media
saebyeok liked routine. she would pick-pocket all day and then she would go see cheol. she didn’t let people into her life, she was okay with the way things were. just her and cheol.
it was like everyday. saebyeok pick-pocketed then walked to the children’s home cheol lived. she checked in then sat away from all the other kids waiting for cheol. she had expected cheol to walk out happy to see her but not as happy as a child his age should be. what she hadn’t expect was for cheol to walk out dragging a girl out.
saebyeok immediately tensed up when she saw cheol walk out with some girl who worked at the children’s home. cheol had a smile on his face as he held onto your wrist and walked over to saebyeok. “noona, remeber i told you about her.” cheol said smiling happy to introduce you to his sister.
when you agreed that you would meet cheol’s infamous sister you weren’t really expecting her. the way cheol described her and insisted that you become friends with her, you weren’t expecting a tall girl who glared at you not even giving you a half smile.
“noona, this is miss … , she teaches us games and how to draw.” cheol said smiling. saebyeok looked over you, her gaze making you feel like your tiniest movements were being judged by the stoic girl. you smiled softly at saebyeok at saebyeok and she gave you nothing but a small hum.
“i’ll let you talk with your sister. nice to meet you.” you say giving them both a small wave and walking back inside the children’s home. saebyeok’s gaze follows you back inside, then she looks back at cheol sensing this wasn’t the reaction he wanted. saebyeok ignores this focusing on the bandage on his chin. saebyeok mutters a small. “what happened?”
“i fell.” cheol answers a little too quickly. saebyeok looks at him tilting her head towards him wanting the truth. “i got pushed.” cheol sighs, but quickly adds. “the boy got in trouble by miss … , and she put the bandage on “ saebyeok eyebrows furrow, was cheol really so fond of you? the rest of the visit when on like normal cheol chatting her ear off and saebyeok asking questions.
the next visit, saebyeok checks in like normal and goes to the outside area where all the kids are. but instead of them playing like normal, your teaching them how to draw an animal. all are giggling and laughing as you make jokes about the duck your drawing. saebyeok takes notice of the way you easily make a child stop crying and put a smile on their face. she also takes notice of the way you spot her sitting and you walk over to cheol pointing to her with a smile of your face and he runs over to her. you send saebyeok a small wave which all you get in return is her barley there smile when she sees cheol.
saebyeok stops by everyday finding herself looking forward to her visits in more then one way. they go like normal you pointing towards her and cheol running towards her. you, like always wave and smile and she has started to give you a small and slight nod. maybe your making progress with her?
one night saebyeok goes to visit cheol before visiting hours are over. she walks into the office and instead of seeing the receptionist like normal she sees you sweeping the floor and cleaning a focused smile on your face. saebyeok stands there not knowing what to do, she hasn’t spoken a word to you ever. saebyeok settles on clearing her throat making you turn around smiling as you see her. “i’ll get cheol.”
when you come back with cheol, you give them their space sitting behind the desk and organizing one of the desk drawers. you can’t help but smile as you see saebyeoks face soften at the sight of her younger brother.
“hi noona.” cheol greets sitting next to saebyeok. saebyeok reaches over and ruffles his hair. “i drew you something.” cheol says softly pulling something out of his jacket pocket handing it to saebyeok. saebyeok takes it a rare smile on her face. she opens it and it’s a picture of her and cheol. “it’s really good.” saebyeok says softly to the boy. “thanks miss … helped me” cheol says proudly feeling a sense of pride after his sisters compliment. saebyeok looks over at you, where your seated at the desk. she can’t help but think feel a weary sense of confusion and content. she was confused as to what kind of person you were to kept cheol, a shy kid to open up to you. she was content that when she couldn’t there was someone who would look out for cheol.
after about 20 minutes you had walked cheol back into the building. when you walked back into the office you were surprised to see saebyeok still seated there. from what you had picked up about saebyeok she really wasn’t much of a talker so you kept the comfortable silence. “i wanted to thank you.” saebyeok muttered her sharp features moving to look at you.
”for what?” you said softly looking at saebyeok. even though saebyeok felt vulnerable in this moment your tone didn’t hold an ounce of a judgment. “for taking care of cheol.” she replied back her gaze on the wall.
“he’s a good kid, talks about you a lot. i’m happy to do it.” you say really looking at saebyeok. the way she made sure her face didn’t show what she was feeling. or maybe the way her eyes would flick over to you before returning them to the wall. “goodnight.” you smile softly as she stands up ready to leave. “night.” she says so very quietly and leaves with that.
your helping cheol tie his shoes. “..then you put this bunny over the other okay?” you say trying to put it in a way that would make sense. “that’s what my sister tried to tell me but i still don’t understand.” the little boy whines clearly getting upset that he doesn’t get it. “you can’t achieve something in one day if you want to be good at it. things take time and this is one of those things okay?” you say sitting down next to cheol. he sulks but nods and goes off to play again.
you then see saebyeok and instead of like normal calling cheol over to her you walk over instead. saebyeok looks at you as she sees you approach. her gaze is stoic but not uninviting. you take a cautious seat next to her leaving a good bit of distance between the two of you.
before you can say anything she begins. “Why are you always working?” saebyeok says looking at you with a genuine look of curiosity. there hasn’t been a time that’s she came and you haven’t been here. don’t you have off days? “I like working. i come in as often as i can.” you say with a small laugh.
“your good with kids.” saebyeok mutters her gaze on cheol happy to see him with kids his age playing and laughing. “my trick is to think like a kid.” you say raising your eyebrows with a smile. saebyeok glances at you before looking back at cheol. “cheol told me he introduced us so i could have a friend my own age.” you laugh shaking your head. cheol wasn’t clueless. you were a girl who never left her job and spent her whole day with kids, so of course your socializing skills weren’t the best. saebyeok was focused and didn’t like talking to people or people in general.
the corner of saebyeok’s lips turned upward for a second. cheol had always been a very observant kid. “what time do you get off of work tonight?” saebyeok asked causally her face not showing what was she was thinking. “i get off at 7 tonight.” you say not thinking much of it as cheol spots the both of you and walks over after finishing his game. “i’ll take you out to eat after you get off work tonight.” saebyeok said looking at you her face as stoic as ever. “okay.” you mumbled standing up not trusting yourself to say anything else. cheol ran over smiling, happy to see the both of you together.
saebyeok had convinced herself that she was doing this for cheol. cheol wanted you two to be friends and you had been good to cheol. this was nothing but a thank you and so cheol didn’t worry for her.
saebyeok waited outside the children’s home for you. you walked out spotting the girl waving and walking over to her. “where we going?” you asked smiling. “wherever you want.” she mumbled back. “there are some night markets with good food?” you shrugged to which she nodded falling in step with you.
“what do you do for work?” you asked looking up at her curiously. saebyeok of course wasn’t going to tell you that she stole for a living so she went with something simple. “i work at a cafe.” saebyeok muttered to which you nodded.
when you two arrived at the market you two had decided on a place that sells kimpap. you two took a seat at a small table. “i don’t really go out often so thank you.” you let out a small laugh. saebyeok likes the way you laugh, she’s never noticed the way a person laughed before. “me either.” she nods in agreement. “do you like art?” saebyeok mutters at you chewing her food. you look up at her with a smile. “when i was younger i wanted to be an artist.”
“do you still want to?” she follows up looking at you. “no, i like what i do. what about you, what is something you’d like to do?” saebyeok thought for a second. no one had ever really asked her questions about herself where she had to think about it. she settles for, “not really.”
an old woman walking by had dropped, her whole wallet. you saw this and picked it up standing up and handing it back to the woman with a smile. the old lady thanked you. “thank you, young ma’am. i don’t know what I would’ve done if i lost this“ the woman opens her wallet trying to hand you twenty thousand won. you shake your head not accepting the money. “it’s no problem keep your money have a good day.” you smile sitting back down.
saebyeok had watched this whole interaction in shock. if it had been her she would have pocketed the wallet. but you picked it up that thought not even crossing your mind and handed it back. then when the lady had tried to give you money you declined. you did everything saebyeok wouldn’t and it only made her more curious about you.
saebyeok lost in her thoughts picks around her food. you understood that saebyeok preferred not to talk and you were fine with silence. “that was nice.” saebyeok broke the quiet bubble around the two of you. you give her a soft smile shaking your head eating your food. “don’t give me too much credit.” saebyeok just stares at you, your not like anyone she’s ever met.
after you two finish eating and are walking back to both of your apartments. saebyeok realized you didn’t live far from her and decided to walk you home. you two walked close, arms brushing close. “i had a good time.” you say quietly. saebyeok mutters a small “me too.”
saebyeok’s previous mindset that this had only been for cheol had slowly begun to vanish. saebyeok felt the way your hands brushed every so often. the way that both of you seemed to gravitate closer to each other. it numbed her to everything else going on. saebyeok haven’t even realized it but she was slowly slipping her cold hand into yours. it felt like it was only the two of you right now, just walking down the street hand in hand. saebyeok didn’t look at you, but her hand was enough to confirm that maybe this wasn’t as friendly as cheol had intended. that maybe cheol played matchmaker. cheol had helped two girls who were each deserving of love find each other. and right now in this moment it was enough.

There stood Sae-byeok, acting as if you were a total stranger. This was the same push pull she had been giving you since the day you met her. One minute she was gentle and sweet acting as if you were the most interesting thing in the world. The next she was back to your emotionless co-worker you once grew curious about. It’s been a week since you last talked to her making a promise that you would let whatever you had with her go.
Sae-byeok is like a magnet, it feels natural to be next to her and against your better judgement you find yourself making your way towards her. You walk up behind her as she is cleaning the coffee machine in the back. Her hair is tied in a loose low ponytail making her sharp features even more apparent. You swallow your nerves deciding that your heart might not be able to take it the next time she gives you the cold shoulder. “Sae-byeok.” You barley manage to announce from behind her. She turns around her sharp eyes looking at you but not daring to share what’s going inside her head.
She doesn’t say anything, and you take this as your sign to continue. “Can we talk?” You say with a sudden but short-lived pang of confidence. “About what?” She says her voice not showing even the tiniest bit of emotion. Her cold gaze makes you want to just apologize and walk away. “You confuse me.” You finally mutter out. This isn’t the conversation you had practiced the day before. You felt every thought leave your head and what occupied it was Sae-byeok. The way she was casually leaning against the counter or the way she kept eye contact with you. It made you feel woozy, the way you always felt when you were in her presence.
“What are you confused about?” She mutters back matching your hushed tone. You can see the way her eyebrows furrowed but that was all her sharp face revealed. “Do you not like me? It’s making me feel like every things in my head. So if you could just break it to me now if-“ You say letting all the thoughts that have been brewing in your mind for weeks before she interrupts you. “What are you talking about?” She sighs clearly not understanding what your trying to say. “Well sometimes you make me think that you like me and other times it feels like i’m in your way.” You say breaking eye contact feeling yourself start to feel silly for even coming to talk to her.
You liked when you and Sae-byeok would sit and talk quietly with each other. And of course you didn’t miss the glances she would give you at work or the way when she would reach for something her hand would “accidentally” brush past yours. She broke you out of your thoughts by saying something you never thought that you would hear from Sae-byeok. “I do like you.” She mutters so quietly you could’ve thought you imagine it. But her face tells a different story she looks as if she hasn’t said the thing you’ve wanted to hear for months.
“What?” You manage to mutter out feeling as if someone had just told you that you’d won the lottery. “I thought I made it clear.” She says back which makes you look at her to see if she was joking. “Not really.” You say a small but pleased smile making it’s on your face. “Oh.” She mutters turning her attention back on the coffee machine. Sae-byeok looks as collected as ever but you on the other hand look like you wanted to hear her say it again and set it as your ringtone.
“I’m-I’m going to go back to work okay?” You say hiding the smile that wanted to adorn your face walking back outside to the register. Sae-byeok let out a small hum as you left. When you were all the way out of the back Sae-byeok let a small, rare but genuine smile. She looked out the door you left from clearing her throat and getting back to work. Throughout the rest of the day when you both made awkward nervous eye contact, you weren’t confused.
