D-386 : Humbaba, Design Refresh

I was fighting this BITCH on her design for a long time, but I think I'm FINALLY satisfied with this latest stab at her. Meet Humbaba! The most meangirl of all the Destroyers and low key my favorite. I knew I needed SOMEONE with bigass horns in my lineup. I've always loved the hell out of Pluto (Astro Boy) and he's def a big point of inspa for Humbaba. Bigass horns like that are so prominent and recognizable, I wanted something like that to really stand out amongst the different headcrests of my Destroyers.

Originally I went for a more bull-like, thinner horn shape but was dissatisfied with them on her. Ended up gunning for something that more echoes a sun motif since she's got head/solar based powers. In this latest version, I pushed that wide, almost moosey sorta flange on her horns much farther and I'm finally happy with 'em. xD
(old vers, complete with the old GR instead of D back when these were still low key just fan charas XD)
For the gold, I already was poking at a fictional gold-ish metal in the world of Icebox. Almost all of my destroyers have gold bits in their design which are small pieces of sol armor or weaponry. (Nov's horn, for example). Canonically its a rare and expensive to work metal so when it does appear its usually in relatively small amounts. Which then led me to think "what if one was just PURE sol". She's named Humbaba after the demon/giant/monster in the Epic of Gilgamesh. Some versions describe Humbaba as having been raised by Utu, hence my Humbaba's solar/heat motif!

D-561 : Krasue, Design Blab

Skipping a design refresh for Krasue because I'm quite happy with her as-is. So I'll just blab a bit about her design inspa! The only things overtly not up-to-date on the top refsheet are the size comp to a human (I dropped the height of all my Destroyers down significantly since making that one.) and the name change. The explanation for which will be down at the bottom of this blab. I stumbled across this antag robot design in the og Tetsujin anime from the 60s, and REALLY liked the shape of the head here. I wanted a destroyer who had the same sort of shapes and ended up with Krasue here! Who's mostly a mix of that and Tetsujin 28 directly in regards to the barrely bodyshape.
Dunno why I picked a nightfighter paintjob, I was originally gonna save it for someone else but ended up really liking it on her so she gets to keep it. XD

As for the chest-eyes bit, I know I wanted to keep the crescent on her "head" featureless in order to maintain the shape and push the weirdness of her. But also I dig the design of Goliath (Astro Boy) and knew even before I made Krasue that I wanted at least one destroyer with eyes and/or mouths on their body instead of their head.

I've also decided to change her name from Kagibat to Krasue. All Destroyers are named after figures, monsters or weapons from world myth/folklore. I had read somewhere that Kagibat was a name of an interesting figure in Filipino folklore, but now I can't find that resource ANYWHERE and it looks like the name/figure from that source may have been misconstrued with a folklore figure from an entirely different background altogether?? Been thinking Krasue would fit much better anyway, because it's a vampire-like entity from southeast asian folklore who's head detaches at night to eat people and drink blood. Which her head-chain-thing would echo nicely.
Overall, I'm just way more comfortable naming her after a folklore figure I can reliably research and vet with better sources.

Grass Rendering Explorations
I've been frustrated with how I want to render grass. I usually fight myself between getting too caught up in the details, or not giving enough detail. So I did a few doodle tests with different rendering styles the other day.

I think my main issue was finding something that matched well with the type of linework I usually do. I'm most happy with how the robot field scene and the mountain valley scene attempts went, in that regard! Gives the volumes/depth I want without me needing to destroy my hand on detailwork every time I wanna draw a field.

D-436 : Echidna Design Refresh

I've been dissatisfied with how same-y my current lineup of giant robots for Icebox has been, so I've been trying to shake things up and really push their proportions lately. Echi was already the most unique body-shapes wise from the other gals, but Im quite happy with the lil adjustments here!

(Old vers, complete with the old GR instead of D serials back when these guys were more low key fan characters for Giant Robo XD) Besides wanting more bodytype variation in my giant robot lineup, I also wanted to re-inject more of the inspirational sources back into Icebox like I originally envisioned. In Echi's case, I took a few inspirational bits and pieces from GR-2 (Giant Robo) and Baccus (Tetsujin 28). Specifically with the; more slender limbs and feet, simplified joints and the more beigey/pale paintjob. There's also def some Monster (Tetsujin 28) in there with her head-cone and "smile". XD But thats been there since day 1.

Also there from day 1, but the basic idea of the mottled beige/blue-grey paintjob comes from German WW2 aircraft in desert camo paintjobs. (NOT here to glorify that shit, just interested in aviation history and Echi is an antag. I enjoy snoopin on different historic aircraft paintjobs for robot inspa fodder.)

Namewise, I picked Echidna for the mother of monsters figure in Greek mythology. Not the pokey lil animal. XDD I wanted to echo the snake-like details the Echidna from myth is often depicted with in my robot Echidna via her long extendo-bits! Also pushing the monsterous aspect with extra body segments/limbs and the creepy jaws. I make a point to avoid putting any overtly animal shapes and body parts on my destroyers, and specifically didn't want to like, just slap a snake tail on my Echi. my goal for my destroyers as a whole is to remain mostly humanoid and not too literally echo the things they're named after. Just enough to echo the general theme of their namesake in one form or another.
