🩸 BEAST MEAT 🩸

very much considering getting this screenprinted as tees and tanks!

id: A bold, warm hued illustration of a rearing kirin in a heraldic pose, the negative space around it filled in a rich blue. Clawed, scaly forelimbs give way to hindlimbs of sharp hooves. Its dense, windswept mane contrasts a skeletal, antlered face, gaze locked with the viewer. Protruding between fangs, its forked tongue shifts to esophagus, stomach, and intestines coiled in its gut; all visible. Red stars frame the beast and lily of the valley grows by its feet. A rectangular yellow checkerboard pattern against a red backdrop further frames the artwork.

Kirins are omnivorous hunter-gatherers who need a balanced diet of meat and plants in order to stay healthy. They have an enhanced form (mistaken for a different species by outsiders) that is designed to pursue and capture prey.

An unbalanced diet can lead to problems. Not enough plants can drive a kirin into hunting mode indefinitely, which leads to aggression and violence. While a meatless diet will cause a kirin to lose their hunting form altogether, as well as their prey drive, voice, and general health to the point they're unable to communicate with the pack, and unable to hunt at all.

Luckily, there is a rare flower that can restore the balance and replace the nutrition they get from meat. It takes hard work and communication to cultivate, but it can be brewed into a nutritional supplement for kirins who choose a plant-based diet. For others, it can restore their health and allow them to hunt once more.

Something a bit different than what I normally do, but I hope you all still like it. 

I was inspired by the ornate tapestries of the Medieval period, one of favorites being “The caged unicorn” So this is my very subtle homage to it.

Happy New Year!

Pencil sketch of a kirin character I'm working on. He'll be a companion/mentor figure to my fawn character and has a more humanoid form. Kirin's in this setting are related to equines but not quite the same. Took inspiration from rhinos and alligators for tough leathery skin and armor. They are rare, intelligent and long lived, some have natural magical abilities. Still roughing them out.
