rant on queer representation & media in asia

ranting about something that happened a bit ago on twitter but i felt it was important to continue it here. i do want to add a disclaimer that i am not an expert in queer studies nor on my history/politics in asia before we begin.

if you’re on twitter, you’ve probably seen those “who’s the most influential/famous yaoi/yuri ship” polls that went around like crazy. if you haven’t, you could probably guess what it was about.

two of the ships for the yuri/GL polls were lumity (owl house) and bronseele (ggz + hi3 + hsr. admittedly, the OP specified hsr while using a pic from an older game). and y’all, i thought this shit was going to be a friendly lil game, but certain people made this shit serious. saying lumity had more impact “because they showed pride flags” and “it’s disney’s first queer main couple!” or something, and then basically insinuating bronseele flops bc they weren’t as openly queer, didn’t hold pride flags, etc.

completely ignoring the facts that 1) the pic the poll OP used was them kissing, 2) they’re canon in the older games, and 3) them kissing predates lumity/owl house show by many years.

but anyway, i wanted to go more into the fact that acting like bronseele (or any queer characters/ships from non-western countries) wasn’t impactful to you as a westerner is really ignorant to queer people elsewhere. but specifically using bronseele as an example since being queer still isn’t legal in China, media censorship is Real there, and yet hoyoverse STILL passed bronseele canon (& so many other queer coded characters) into their media over and over despite the GOVERNMENT LEVEL challenges.

disney and hoyoverse are both companies that suck and i’m not bootlicking either of them. they both have a LOT of work to do to be better as a company. but praising DISNEY of all companies for queer rep when they’ve always had more freedom to do so earlier (and just chose not to to appeal to its more conservative audiences) yet chose not to, is certainly a choice. and disney still has yet to have a queer main character in its main movies.

i’m not dismissing lumity fans, nor am i dismissing how impactful they might’ve been to you (because even as a non TOH fan, i do see how impactful they are! bc ultimately they still are a queer couple consisting of the MAIN character in a popular disney show). but dragging down foreign queer content and queer ships bc they don’t fit YOUR criteria of “is it actual representation” is weird, especially when you ignore the socio-political barriers in said region/country.

same thing with Alice Osem*n making claims that “yaoi”/Asian BLs are fetishistic and lumping all Asian queer media together. the superiority complex is crazy.

like i’m so sick of western/yt queers thinking they’re the spokespeople for the entire queer community + queer content, forgetting how other people in other countries still have to go through legal loopholes in order to simply have their queer content PUBLISHED (or even further, having the right to exist as an openly queer person). and that even if we all had the same rights, the way queer content is delivered and expressed would STILL be differently because the LGBTQ+ community is NOT a monolith.

you can absolutely detest a ship all you want. but don’t put down others because it doesn’t fit your narrow-minded narrative.

adding my own rant to this (and i’m agreeing with both OP and Aster): i think it’s genuinely crazy because compared to certain other TWST characters, Rollo is NOT the worst. under the cut for length

the two beastmen from Playful Land literally are based off of child kidnappers and traffickers. idk how the character themselves are portrayed in the event (as i play EN and have not read any translations), but it’s still so ?? strange how so many people loved them but hated Rollo.

as OP said, Idia kidnapped his classmates and opened the portal to hell. Jamil is based off a character who wanted to marry an underaged girl and usurp the throne. Baul (and to an extent because of him, Sebek) is a literal fae supremacist; yet i see him get oggled and even shipped with Lilia (which, you do you, but you have no rights to criticize Rollo if you think a character like Baul is redeemable enough to love a character – Lilia – who came around to loving humans and even being the father to one).

Leona and Vil plotted to severely harm someone else/other people due to reasons that are ultimately petty because of their traumas (Leona being jealous of his rival + always feeling second place, Vil being jealous of Neige + also always feeling like second place/like a villain).

like it’s clear Rollo had specific beef with Malleus, but ultimately he targeted nobody in particular (unlike Frollo, who targeted the Romani in the original movie). he hated MAGIC the most; it just so happened that magic is SO common in Twisted Wonderland that he thought the only answer was to burn the world anew, even if that included targeting other magic users.

and then you have Malleus, who literally forced the world to go into a deep slumber, stalked people’s dreams, and then “forcing” them to live in their happy (yet delusional) dreams. all because he also has traumatic experiences and was so unhappy that Lilia was leaving that he felt the need to control the world. the definition of a toxic controlling relationship.

almost ALL of the twst characters have pros and cons to their persons on a moral scale. not only is being imperfect just innately human, but it’s quite literally the point of their characters. the “crimes” they commit are SUPPOSED to be big and impactful to show HOW fucked up they can be.

calling certain fictional characters/events after real-life criminals and genocides and whatnot is always weird to me (unless the author specifically states that a character is based off of a real-life war criminal, or the event is based off a real-life genocide/war). but imo the twst fandom goes a step further and blatantly mischaracterizes Rollo based on the character he’s based on (it doesn’t help that their names are so similar too).

and adding on, the only reason why Frollo/the Righteous Judge or whatever is seen as some hero in the City of Flowers is LITERALLY because history is twisted. just like with the other Seven, their stories were hugely twisted so that they’re seen as heroic figures, meanwhile the visions Yuu/MC sees in the mirror/their dreams literally exposes (part) of how false those narratives are. so no i will not accept the “well he looks up to Frollo therefore he’s bad” narrative as if history hasn’t completely been rewritten in twst, and therefore they’re ALL victims to misinformation

Fuck it, It's gonna be a twst hot take but I gotta say it.

Rollo haters who hate Rollo due to him being based of Frollo from the Disney movies are hypocrites when we have Jamil who is based off Jafar who had an on screen kiss with Jasmine who is 16 while he looks to be in his 40s and the sultan pointed that out when Jafar suggested him marrying Jasmine. But does Jamil get called a pervert for just being based off Jafar? No, you know why? Because he's not Jafar, he's based off of him, Jafar's actions has nothing to do with Jamil period. If we can understand that, why the hate for Rollo? What is the actual genuine hate? 'Well, he tried to kill the yuu and the others' so have the overblots.

And don't use the 'He hates magic users and there fore he is racist against magic people.' Y'all forget Sebek exist and blatantly calls you human in a derogatory way? But naw mans gotta new hair style so he's good. It just frustrates me that people will project actions unto Rollo that he didn't even do? Idia kidnapped the overblots for testing, proceeded to overblot as well and almost releasing the titans to DESTROY THE WORLD, but you'll all be like 'he had a rough childhood, Ortho died because of his actions'. Rollo couldn't save his brother due to not having magic at the time, his guilt slowly turned to a hatred of magic.

And I'm not saying all this because Rollo can do no wrong and he's the best written character in game, no he isn't. He's hypocrite when it comes to his logic, he's a flawed character and so are other characters in twst. We only know Rollo from one event and that's it, we don't see him grow as a person or express his interest or give us more of his personality, it's one event and we take what we can get of his character.

I just wanted to get this off my chest, I'm not bringing down other characters because they're 'worst than Rollo', but wanting to show how ridiculous people mischaracterized Rollo because he's based off of Frollo, we had with him in one event he was in and how hypocritical everyone has been about this. I'm not saying you can't hate Rollo, he's an asshole and I agree but labeling him as some pervert for yuu after one interaction he had, that by the way he showed concern that yuu has to put up with the other boy's nonsense is shocking honestly.

That's all I have to say. I'm sorry this came off as preachy but I really had to get this off my chest.

2) again that’s genuinely great that you and others are trying to educate her! but again, Shiba can’t expect to be waited on by everyone :/ like she was told why her wording was horrible by her non-mutuals (myself included). it’s great that you’ve seen progress since you befriended her, but other people aren’t going to wait nor will they see that she’s changed if she doesn’t show it in her actions and words consistently.

3) i haven’t seen a new post from her, but she’ll truly prove herself if she shows her change via her actions. a proper apology would definitely count as a great first step though.

i have to add, online etiquette is something she needs to do herself if she wants to interact with others on social media (calling someone “abnormal” IRL wouldn’t go well, so how did she think it would be appropriate online?). there are also trans POCs who are younger than her who know better. i only bring up the fact that i’m a POC to show that although we have similar backgrounds, i still learned (the easy AND the hard ways), and that at some point, our upbringings are no longer excuses.

if you have the privilege to be on the internet freely, then you have the privilege (and duty imo) to learn by yourself. of course having friends help is nice, but you can’t use them as an excuse Not to do some self reflecting.

4) apart from extreme circumstances, her reputation depends on her actions. but i’m someone who has never heard a thing about her prior to this incident, yet even i agree with others who are upset at her.

i also don’t think you and/or Shiba realize just how Badly her words affected other people. like,, At All. and doubling down only made things SO much more worse for her. of course different people will react differently, but that doesn’t erase the fact that Shiba’s words TRULY fucked with people (to put it simply). and that’s why people are Very upset.

if you want to talk about the Other situation then feel free to do so. regardless, you came off as coddling + making up excuses for Shiba. again, idk the details of the Other situation, but from how i see it: Shiba hurt people in the past with her words, and she’s still hurting people now with them. and some may see it as a sign that she hasn’t changed. of course i could be very wrong, but that’s how i see it.

some advice for you and Shiba’s other friends who immediately jumped to defend her before the supposed proper apology: you need to wait for her to make a statement before rushing to her defence. otherwise, it sounds like you’re making excuses, or even agreeing with what she’s saying. it doesn’t show that She acknowledged anything we’re calling her out on. speak To her, not For her. you don’t need to leave her to do this.

also i really do need to add that adding your mom’s quote was not helpful in explaining heteronormativity 💀 i know you’ve since explained that you were using it as an example, but still…

Omi was endlessly fun to tease. 

After asking for a kiss and getting his cheeks a nice shade of crimson, you’d avoided his lips entirely to press a kiss to the scar on his jaw. He’d never gotten why you liked to do such a thing but you’d also told him countless times that he always made the cutest confused face when you did it, especially when he tried to dip back down to actually capture your lips. You never made it easy for him, having him chase you around until he finally wraps his arms solidly around you to prevent you from wiggling out. 

Your kisses with Omi are always filled with laughter, love, and dedication, his ability to transmit his emotions over to you in one swift movement was still something that amazed you. He had been so cautious with his confession, both fearing rejection but knowing he couldn’t hold his overflowing feelings in any longer. He’d barely even let you respond before he told you to forget about it, causing an awkward rift to grow between the two of you until you took the initiative to lay his fears to rest. 

You did love him back, you did want to be with him, and you didn’t care what he used to be. 

Now you took advantage of every opportunity presented to kiss your lovely boyfriend, showering him in the love and affection you knew he deserved. There wasn’t a single day that went by where you let Omi forget that you loved him endlessly, that your heart was all his and that his was all yours. A heart that you’d nurture and protect until your very last breath is drawn. He thinks the imagery is a bit dramatic but you insisted it made perfect sense, wanting to get across just how important he was to you.

“You’re just so kissable, Omi, I can’t help myself.” 

“Haha, I can appreciate the compliment but… you’re definitely the more kissable one here.” 

This was an argument you’d gladly take part in, knowing with complete confidence you were right.

“I would never,” Itaru stated, though you can see a mischievous glint in his eye, “You’ve brought me nothing but good luck since we were together. Now pull!” 

When you’d walked into your boyfriend’s bedroom that night you’d expected business as usual, lounging on his bed while doing your own thing as he gamed and occasionally took a break to give you his attention. You didn’t really mind being left to your own devices as just being around him made you happy, and Itaru felt the same way, just comforted by the fact he could vent to you by swiveling his chair around. You also enjoyed all the trash-talking that came from a man who presented himself as a polite salaryman during the day, but that was something to admire another time. 

You had been minding your own business, simply enjoying the article you were reading when Itaru suddenly approached the bed with a look of contemplation on his face. You almost feared that he was about to bring up a serious topic but the nervous butterflies quickly dissipated when he flashed you the game he was playing, showing a screen with multiple pull options. 

“Solo yolo or are we going all in?”

“Solo yolo, I wanna see your luck stat.” 

“I’m actually going to kill you if you say that to me again, but hand it over.” You pressed the appropriate button without fear, knowing you wouldn’t really care about the outcome either way. He’d mentioned something about this being a pull for a special once-in-a-lifetime SSR that wouldn’t be in the game once this event ended but you only half listened, looking for the indication that you’d pulled exactly what he wanted. 

You didn’t even have the chance to see what you pulled before Itaru had pushed the phone out of your hand onto the bed, not even giving you a chance to ask what was wrong before his lips were crushed against yours. 

The kiss is more passionate than you assumed it was going to be, Itaru managing to completely knock the breath out of you as he pinned you under him. His hands held either side of your face to keep you from pulling away, lips moving smoothly against yours; you place your hands over his, squeezing them as a way to say ‘Hey, I need air!’ before he took the hint and pulled away. He was smirking at how disheveled you looked, smoothing down your hair for you before pulling you back into a sitting up position. 

“G-Geez,” You stuttered out as you tried to catch your breath, not at all insulted that his attention was immediately back on his phone, “Guess I did good?” 

“This is great! Now I know if Sakuya’s not available I can come to you.” 

“I feel like I should be insulted that you’re going to Sakuya first,” Itaru leaned over to press another quick kiss to your lips before he returned to his monitors, preparing for the next round of whatever shooter he’d chosen to play that night, “And you better not react like that when he pulls you an SSR.”

She toned it down after that, and now Muku is the #1 fan of Izu’s curry 

She makes it for him on his rough days, and it really helps Muku to know someone’s looking out for him 

↠ Izu TOTALLY walks Muku and Yuki to school

She wishes them luck at the school gates, Muku gives her a hug and wishes her luck too while Yuki just groans loudly 

↠ Once, Muku forgot a really important project for school at the dorm

Izu LITERALLY SPRINTS to his school and delivers it to him

HE’S SO EMBARRASSED WHEN SHE SHOWS UP IT’S ADORABLE 

“K..Kantoku-san? What are you doing here?”

Ever since then, she always makes sure that he has everything he needs before he leaves (bento, pencil pouch, books, etc) 

↠ Muku has called Izumi “Mom” on multiple occasions 

HE GETS SO FLUSTERED WHEN HE REALIZES WHAT HE SAID 

Izu honestly is really happy, because she realizes that she’s a figure that Muku can depend on constantly
