You were in shock to say the least. The Lee Minho was right in front of you, greeting you like you used to talk on a daily basis, and he even had the audacity to call you by the nickname you gained after embarrassing yourself in front of everyone in third grade summer.
You were fuming, but as Danielle lightly squeezed your arm, you came back to your senses and realized you still hadn’t said anything. But before you could even open your mouth, Dani's grip on your arm tightened, as if she was silently pleading you to think before saying the worst shit you could come up with. And she was right, you were a counselor after all, and problems before camp even started were the last thing you needed, Chris would kill you before you even had time to start the car.
“Minho.” you settled for the simple acknowledgement of his presence, after taking a deep breath.
Trying not to seem bothered wasn’t as hard as it was some years ago, and you thanked almost all of your college teachers for that.
As if some higher being had taken pity on you, Minho’s friends had finished checking in and it was now his turn. You hated to admit, but your eyes lingered on him for a little longer than they should while he approached the counter. You had never gotten the chance to see him all grown up. He got rid of the ridiculous bowl cut and appeared to have gotten lenses instead of glasses. This was also the first year seeing him after having grown taller than you, and you still didn’t know how you felt about it. He was always such a short prick, hopefully the troublesome attitude hadn’t grown with him. It was when he almost caught your glimpse that you ruled you were staring for a few seconds too long, choosing to focus on who was chatting with Felix and Danielle instead.
“Felix your voice changed so much man! All the ladies must be at your feet.” Said Changbin. Him and Felix were close friends at camp, but to be fair, who wasn’t Felix friends with? Everyone loved him. “Hey Y/n, how are you?” he continued, smiling widely at you.
“You know, things are going okay. How have you been?” you were slightly caught aback when he approached you for a hug, but reciprocated the gesture all the way.
You and Changbin haven’t really talked much during the time you knew each other. He first came to camp in third grade, you two met through Felix and ended up grouped together in a lot of activities. He was nice and had a particular charm about him that you found yourself thinking about more often than you should've when you were younger. You could say he was your only camp crush ever, but even that would be a reach considering you almost didn’t talk to any guys, including him. You’d be lying if you said you hadn’t though about breaking your rule about boys for him, but Felix was already one exception too many for a rule you were fixed on following.
You and Felix ended up talking to Changbin for a while, whereas Danielle drifted away to go catch up with the rest of the room. He was the same as he was back then, slightly more mature and, by the looks of him, started regularly going to the gym. He had glowed up, and he looked hot as fuck. You tried not to blush at the though.
Soon enough, Chris came back and called everyone to the outside auditorium for the beginning of camp meeting. You weren’t really sure what it would entail, but followed Changbin with enthusiasm all the way to the benches, where he made sure to pat the spot on his right for you to sit.
Was he excited to see you? That was kind of cute…
You ended up zoning out somewhere in the middle of the meeting and, to be fair, would it even have been like you if you had listened all the way through? You got the key points though, breakfast at 8:30, schedule for group activities could be found on the cork board in the dinning hall, everyone had to fulfill cleanup duties for the shared spaces as well as their own cabin, the kids’ emergency contacts were attached to the back of the cabin door, and you were asked not to spoil the activities since the summer contest would not be fair if anyone practiced ahead of time.
The camp’s summer contest took place every year and consisted of two teams for each grade competing in challenges and fun games for points. In the end of camp, the team with most points won the final prize. To be honest, the prize was nothing special, some fake ass medals and the right to choose the activity for the last day, but the pride in winning and being better than everyone was what really kept the competition going. You haven’t won a single time throughout all the years you attended camp but you would try your damn best to make your kids win this time around.
When the meeting was finally over, and you had changed a healthy amount of whispered comments and laughs with Changbin, it was time for you to each go to your assigned cabins and unpack your stuff. You looked over the small crowd of counselors to find Danielle eagerly talking to Jeongin. She quickly wave him goodbye and made her way to where you were. The dreamy expression painted on her face told you everything you needed to know before you started making your way to your cabin.
“So… how is he?” you said, and Danielle looked at you pretending she didn’t know who you were referring to, but you weren’t having any of it.
“Dani come on, we’ve been through this a dozen times already! You know who I’m talking about!” you whisper shouted to avoid letting other people hear the subject of your conversation.
“Are you talking about Felix?” you swear you could slap Danielle one day.
“I’m talking about the guy you can’t seem to get over since second grade!”
Ah yes, it was quite the long story, but Jeongin was your best friend’s first ever crush when she was eleven. They met in first grade, but it was in the following year that Danielle started showing her feelings in the silly little ways second graders show their love. They held hands and played together, made friendship bracelets, and she even kissed him on the cheek! It was cuter now than it was back then, you realize. And their summer was spent like that, until he broke her heart, and went to the end of summer dance with a third year girl.
They didn’t talk for the next few years, until things seemed to be somewhat forgotten by everyone. Except you. You still resented him a little for making your best friend cry when she didn’t deserve it, and it was in second grade, trying to console Danielle in your arms, that you came up with your second rule.
2° TIP – NEVER FALL IN LOVE
And so you didn’t. Throughout all your years of camp, you never fell in love, and let’s say keeping away from boys really helped that fact, especially the ones you found cute. Guess you had one more reason not to talk to Changbin.
“I am over him, okay? We just haven’t talked in a while, and he came to ask me how I was doing.” if that was true, she had a point, but you couldn’t help but be cautious when he had already rejected her once. Even if he had grown up now.
“Okay, fine. But be careful with him.”
“Y/n, we’ve talked once since arriving here. I don’t even think that can classify us as friends.”
“A long conversation that was.” You said, arriving at your cabin, and like that, the Jeongin chit-chat was dead.
After unpacking your stuff and making all of the ten beds for the girls arriving tomorrow with the help of Danielle, you two made your way to the outdoor area next to the woods.
Today was counselor bonfire night, a party for you guys to have fun before the responsibility kicked in. The place was decorated with fairy lights and paper chains that fell from the tree branches and ended at just the right height for you to sit comfortably on the benches made of tree trunks that surrounded the fire. Some of the boys were already taking care of building the flames, having a silent competition in their heads for who’s the most manly. Needless to say Minho and all his mighty attitude were partaking in that contest. Typically men.
You opted on helping some of the girls bring the snacks outside. As always, you had lots of marshmallows for s’mores, but this time, the drinking options were wider than hot chocolate or tea. You were excited to find out if the rumors about counselor night were true, and if they were, you were sure you would be drinking until you couldn’t stand on your own.
The night was settling, the moon high in the sky. You were sitting with Felix, Danielle, Changbin and Hyunjin, Changbin’s friend who never went to camp, but he convinced to come along as counselor. The ambience was warm and cheerful and you were enjoying yourself as much as you could.
Your arm occasionally brushed Changbin’s, and every time he leaned in to whisper some random thought in your ear you felt your heart flutter, and took a sip from your drink in order to calm yourself down. Obviously, the night was going splendidly.
It was only when you got up to go get more food that you realized you were already a little tipsy. Changbin got up next to you and held you by the waist when you almost tripped on your own feet.
“Easy there.” he pulled you closer, even though you had already caught your footing. “Let me help you out.”
And who were you to refuse such a kind offering from such a pleasant looking man.
“I’m okay, Bin. I’m not that drunk.” You whisper in a little laugh when you were out of you friend group’s hearing reach.
“I know, I just wanted to keep you company.” Your heart skipped a beat and you were sure light pink slightly covered your cheeks. “I’m a gentleman after all.”
You couldn’t help but smile at his cocky grin. Maybe you should have talked more to Changbin when you were little. He seemed to have grown into a trustworthy guy. You couldn’t go back in time now, though, and you had definitely outgrown your second grade self, so you guess you could try to see where things could go.
And that was how you ended up taking advantage of your soberness, pretending you were drunker than you actually were, and ‘accidentally’ stumbling closer to him when it seemed fit just to feel his arm tighten around your waist, until you came back and joined your friends.
A few drinks, and many laughs later, Chris announced it was time for the traditional bonfire dance. You all got up and cheered, abandoning your food and drinks, giddy with excitement.
The bonfire dance was a tradition of Camp Haven. You learned the dance the first year you went to camp and you most definitely would teach it to the new kids in the next two months. It was one of your favorite activities, and as you circled the bonfire, you felt nostalgic until the drunkenness took over you body once again, stronger.
The music started blasting through your head, you hand lacing with Changbin’s just before you two fell into the familiar rhythm.
One step front, one back, right, left, twirl, and your back was now facing the bonfire.
The song continued, and the movements repeated during two full eight counts.
One step front, one back, right, left, twirl.
You were getting comfortably dizzy, trying to make the most of the moment while you and all the girls switched partners.
One step front, one back, right, left, twirl.
You swayed from one side to another, full of bliss while you danced with Felix, Hyunjin, who was doing impressively well for someone who just learned the dance, and with some other guys you didn’t take the time or energy to recognize.
One step front, one back, right, left, twirl.
The symphony was reaching its end, the last change of partners happening as your hand laced with the next one’s.
One step front, one back-
Two steps back as you realized who you were holding hands with. Before you had the time to snap your hand away, he circled your waist and pulled you, leading you back into the rhythm.
“Gonna stop dancing because of me? Come on, we’re not twelve.” Minho said between the beats, looking straight at your mortified face.
“Shut the fuck up.” Was the only thing you could master to say after some painful silence, once you realized you had to play along, not only because of the embarrassment it would be if you refused to dance, but also the fact that you would definitely fall down if you let go. Too much for not causing problems on the first day.
“Feisty, aren’t we?” he said, with his classic mocking grin that made you want to punch him in the face.
“Don’t test me, Minho.” You bubbled with rage, but tried to dance as if nothing was happening.
But, oh boy, how the way he danced with so much ease infuriated you. He pulled you right back to dancing like it was the easiest thing in the world, and even now, you couldn’t seem to take control of the movements from him. Why was he so fucking good at everything? You’d strangle him one day.
“As you wish, princess.” You wanted to raise you head to glare at him, but he made sure to make you twirl at just the second before you could protest.
And once again, one step front, one back, right, left, twirl.
His hands ghosted your waist and hips, goose bumps crawling up your spine as you prayed to maintain the most neutral face you could muster. And, much to your displeasure, you felt the alcohol in your veins stronger each second, tumbling over and consequently getting closer to Minho. This time, however, the closeness was not intentional like it was with Changbin moments ago, and you cursed yourself for ending up in this situation.
After an excruciatingly long time, the song ended, your faces closer then they've ever been. You were ready to call it a day and do your best to never see Minho's face again, but he kept his grip on your arm as you lunged away from him.
“Can you get your hands off me?” asking him to let you go without anyone else to keep you upright was a terrible idea, but your pride wouldn’t let you make him think you needed help.
“Y/n, you can’t even stand straight.” You continued thrashing from side to side not caring one bit about the truth in his words. “Are you even listening?”
“Let me go, Minho!”
“Fine!” And with one final thrash from you, he let go of your arm, hand slipping away as you tried to keep your footing.
Your effort ended up being in vain, you falling butt first into the ground while your vision blurred and your head spinned. At that moment, Felix knew better than to continue his pleasant ministrations with Chris and came to help you.
“You fucker!” you shouted at Minho, sending him a middle finger, as Felix dragged you by force to your cabin. Little did you know karma would come to bite you in the ass very soon, and not only in the form of a huge headache in the next morning.
3° TIP – DO NOT INTERACT WITH MINHO WHILE DRUNK
And just like that the night had ended for you, back in your cabin, with Danielle helping you change to your pajamas, while you were too out of it to realize the embarrassment you had just put yourself through.

“You know, you really need to clean this trunk at some point.”
“Now is definitely not the time to complain about that, just be thankful I’m giving you a ride all the way here!” you said to Felix, who was currently sitting inside the trunk of your old light goods vehicle with his head poking out.
It's the beginning of summer and you and your friends were making your way through the mountains with your older than dirt car in hopes of getting to the forest and beach on the other side without the car's brakes faltering on you. This would be your first year as a counselor at Camp Haven and saying you were nervous was a complete understatement.
“Why does Danielle get to seat in the front?” Felix, still obviously complaining, shifts a little in the uncovered trunk to get closer to you and the girl beside you.
“We’ll switch when we go back home, Lix, it’s just another twenty minutes and we’re there.” said Danielle while looking at her phone’s GPS.
What was supposed to be twenty minutes turned out to be forty thanks to your shitty driving skills. You had just got you license and decided to drive all the way to summer camp in hopes of not having to listen to your parents speech about ‘being independent’ and ‘finally getting a job but not being able to get there and how irresponsible that was’. Thankfully, you had Danielle and Felix with you to calm your nerves down (even though the latter was actually doing the quite opposite).
Truthfully, you shouldn’t even have volunteered to drive them both there in the first place. Your hopes of taking your father’s much newer and able car fell short when you found out your parents weren’t going on vacation this year, and you were now stuck with the old second hand two seat car which was a hand me down from your grandfather. No need to say that you three didn’t legally fit in the car, but a promise must be kept, and Felix ended up getting the short end of the stick.
The last half hour of your trip was spent desperately ignoring Felix’s protests every time you crossed a speed bump too fast, making him hit his head on the roof of the car.
Danielle, on the other hand, was calm and collected beside you during the whole journey, choosing to trust your skills and what you were doing, even though you fucked up every left turn and barely made it past the parked cars on your right without hitting any of them.
Soon enough, you three arrived at the dirt floor parking lot of Camp Haven. Everything looked just like it had a few years ago when you were on the backseat of your parents’ car, full of expectations and dreams. Now things were different though, all of you equally excited, but burning with the weight of the responsibilities you would have in just two days.
Even with you not knowing how to parallel park to save your life, you three arrived (mostly) safe, and Felix finally got out of the trunk, together with all your stuff.
“Not to be that kind of guy, but do you really need three pillows?” Felix had to help you move all your stuff to the temporary luggage room to make it in one trip.
“You never know when you’re gonna need them!” you almost bumped into someone on your way in had you not turned around in time.
Right before you was standing Chris, the new head counselor of Camp Haven. You had attended camp together when you were little but he was two years older than you, so you never really got the chance to talk. Not that you usually talked to boys your age either, or younger, or boys in general. Ever since second grade you started keeping track of all the mistakes you could make at camp that could eventually ruin your summer, and boys were a huge no-no, so you just tried to avoid them altogether.
1° TIP – BOYS SUCK
Felix was the exception, though. You swear you’ve never met such a kind guy in your entire life. You two met in your first year at camp, and he was a total breath of fresh air. He was gentle and didn’t feel the need to show off like the other boys your age, shared his candy with you, and even let you borrow his Harry Potter books.
All that led you to decide that Felix was safe, and maybe not ALL boys sucked, but all of them except Lix seemed such a burden that you judged it was better to stick to your rule.
Some years later, you found out Chris wasn’t that bad either. However, you only really started interacting with him when you were adults, thanks to having some friends in common. He was reliable and all that a good leader needs, and you were sure you were in good hands.
“Hey! Haven’t seen you guys in a while! Need any help?” and that’s Chris, always helpful if the task at hand isn’t cleaning.
“I guess I’ll take you up on that one!” you said, giving Chris one of your pillows and some too many stray bags you were carrying. “How are preparations going? Has everyone arrived?”
“Still a few people missing, but tomorrow we’ll have everything ready to start rolling. You guys can go ahead and check in in the main hall.”
You thanked Chris and made your way to the mess hall entrance. As soon as you three walked in, the nostalgia kicked in like a truck. Seeing all the familiar faces, now grown up past braces and acne, thriving and equally joyful to see you felt like home. You went ahead to do your check in with the other head counselor, barely being able to wait to greet and hug all the people you felt like you knew for forever.
After being handed the basic red staff t-shirt, keys to your cabin, and the ugliest bag full of counselor stuff you’ve ever seen, you stepped aside and waited for Danielle and Felix to do the same.
You were counseling half of the forth grade girls, and after overhearing the check in happening beside you, you found out you were lucky enough to be paired with Dani, who would be counseling the other half.
Felix was almost finished collecting his ugly set of stuff, and you were ready to take off and talk to your guys’ old friends when the doors to the main hall opened again. Turning around, curious to see who it was, your heart immediately dropped, and Danielle had to link her arm with yours to make sure you didn’t fall on your butt. You felt your heart beating in your ears, and you swore you were about to explode.
He couldn’t be here, why would he be here? He was from so far away… but this was an international camp after all. But coming just to be a counselor?
It didn’t make any sense, but none of that mattered as you realized you weren’t dreaming, and the Lee Minho was really making his way to the check in counter with his little friends right on his toe. You couldn’t breathe, and you didn’t know how to react as he greeted Felix and Danielle like it was nothing, and turned to you with that shit eating grin you had hoped to never see again.
“Hello princess, long time no see.”
