A little illustration of Mara Jade Skywalker. I’m slowly working on a mural of a lot of the Legends characters and am enjoying putting my own little twist on them.
I'm emerging from my Star Wars art block to draw my queen, the most badass, the woman so out of Luke's league but he somehow still managed to land her, the perfection that is Mara Jade.
I love her with my whole heart you guys. Always have, always will. She's one of the reasons Legends is my Star Wars in my heart of hearts.
She isn't canon anymore and New Republic is an era I haven't touched yet so I struggled. I struggled with colour palette. I struggled with background. I struggled with corners. All of it. So finally I said fuck it, let's just have some fun and this came out.
The lovely chaps behind the FANTASTIC Interregnum fics loved my ✨PRACTICAL SPACE FASHION MARA✨ so much that they asked if we could get a companion piece to celebrate the completion of their latest work.
I appreciate it when writers realize that pairings don't have to become "boring" once they officially become a couple.
One of my favorite aspects of Luke and Mara's relationship in the EU is that imo Timothy Zahn made them more interesting in Survivor's Quest even though they were married and the will they/won't they aspect of their relationship was no longer a factor. Instead, the main driving force became "how will these two face challenges together," which is just as compelling, if not more so, than wondering how/when two people will finally end up with each other. Instead of giving up on their dynamic, Zahn developed it in an organic way that made you want to continue rooting for them because they work so well as a team.
They communicate honestly. Mara admits to Luke that she feels a draw towards her old life and is ashamed of that; Luke merely listens and doesn't judge her for it. He respects her boundaries, offering to lend an ear or be a shoulder to lean on but only when she's ready to talk about what's bothering her. When sh!t starts to hit the fan, the two of them coordinate strategies instead of going off and doing their own thing and then fighting about taking different approaches.
Both recognize that they've spent too much time apart thanks to their work and put an effort into remedying the situation. Mara gets worried at one point that Luke is exerting himself too much and tries to help by supporting him. In the climactic fight, Mara expresses overwhelming admiration for Luke's compassion and willingness to exhaust all peaceful options before resorting to violence. Luke values what Mara brings to the relationship and the ways in which she challenges him, and he can't imagine ending it just because the old Jedi forbid them from having attachments. He believes wholeheartedly that they are better together and that she helps him to be both a better person and a better Jedi. Mara adores him so much she's proud of taking his name and wants everyone to know it, going so far as to threaten some smugglers with "I may be a badass but my husband is LUKE KRIFFING SKYWALKER OKAY and he's POWERFUL and TERRIFYING and you'd BETTER be glad I didn't sic him on you because you'd be destroyed" (honestly one of her funniest moments lol).
Overall they have such a healthy marriage and I love that Zahn validated that instead of chucking them to the side because there was no more "tension" between the two. I pity Star Wars fans who've never been introduced to their relationship because it's just such a wonderful representation of a loving, supporting pair who approach everything as a collaborative unit. Yes, they started out as enemies-to-lovers but they came so far and developed into a really strong team ready to face the world together. Also she didn't die and leave him and Ben devastated what are you talking about there is no death scene in Ba Sing Se
