SPEAKING OF EMMA:

her role in the story is seriously overlooked. her breaking it off with jacob is inadvertently the catalyst for the entire night because jacob goes off the rails and breaks down the car. i’m not blaming her because who told jacob to do that, but it wasn’t her fault. it wasn’t her fault and that’s almost worse because the guilt she must carry for that is immense.

she can lose all of her friends in one night because of something “she” did. again, it’s not actually her fault, but i could see her adopting this mindset in the aftermath of an emma sole survivor run or even an everyone lives run where counselors are still infected.

all in all emma is a misunderstood queen and i am SICK of it!!

my roman empire is the fact that some of the people in this fandom will crucify women over the smallest things while giving men a pass for everything from misogyny to just generally being a creep. wdym josh said some absolutely absurd things about both ashley and sam + recorded sam in the bathtub + stole sam’s clothes but he’s mentally ill and as such can’t be blamed but ashley (who is SAID TO BE JUMPY) cried a little too much and as such deserved everything that she got that night?

wdym jacob refused to listen to emma when she said she didn’t want to be with him anymore and BROKE DOWN AN ENTIRE VEHICLE, stranding not only him and emma but EVERY SINGLE COUNSELOR at hackett’s quarry, just to be a turd and STILL misunderstand the reason emma even broke up with him in the first place but he’s heartbroken so that’s alright, but emma lead him on (went out of her way to find him, tried to cheer him up while explaining (again!!) why they wouldn’t work while jacob basically put his fingers in his ears and sang) and she’s a shallow heartless mean girl. tell me you played the games with your listening ears off without telling me, good lord.

“Come on, dude. Give it back. You aren’t funny,” Matt’s letterman jacket came into view as he stood next to Ashley. His report cards called him kind and helpful, but Matt was fearless, too. She’d never seen him cry, not in the whole year that she’d known him. Matt had explained that his brother’s jacket made him invincible, like Superman, and when he wasn’t wearing it, he was more like Clark Kent. Ashley had just smiled like she had any clue who Clark Kent was.

and while im on the quarry, i’d love to talk about abigail blyg. namely, the writers fumbled the bag so hard with her and i will never shut up about it.

i am probably the biggest abi stan on tumblr because i was staring the potential IN THE FACE just for it to fizzle out like that.

the game literally develops her so well as this witty and compassionate artist who’s a little more reserved than the average joe…and then throws her to the side after nick turns. REALLY???

like, she cries about it for a little bit and sits there for the rest of the game until she can either help kaitlyn, die in the cellar with emma, or fade into oblivion, never to be seen or heard from again. which in turn makes the fandom (and fanfiction writers) see her as this helpless damsel who cries all the time and can’t do anything for herself. GET OUT NO SHE’S NOT.

and yeah, i get that everyone can’t be a main character, but dude. for a game that prides itself on all the different endings is it really that different if your WHOLE GAME ends because a certain character dies?? what was stopping abi and emma from doing the lodge showdown with caleb? they’re down there anyway!! injustice, that’s what was stopping them. (i don’t care that they probably didn’t have a gun or any form of weaponry. it’s the thought that counts, alright? they’d better bunker down and get some silverware 🙂‍↕️)

can we tell i’m a little upset because they did my girl ashley like that too? her intelligence is ignored by the fandom because of the fact that she was REASONABLY UPSET that LITERAL MONSTERS were on the prowl!! SHE DEDUCED THAT THE PSYCHO STUFF WAS FAKE!! ABI MANAGED TO ESCAPE A WEREWOLF WITH NO PRIOR KNOWLEDGE!!!! IT’S ICONIC ON EMILY BUT NOT ON HER?? WDYM SHE JUST KNEW TO STOP AND HOLD HER BREATH? IDC THAT ITS A GAMEPLAY MECHANIC, THAT AINT THE POINT.

i think we as a society forget about laura kearney and how valiantly she stood on business. that girl would’ve burned the whole camp down about max and i love that for her. that’s why it confuses me when i hear people talking about laura and ryan like baby no!! she was infected, she would have never left max i fear. that is all.

why do people act like we can’t sympathize with josh and say his actions were especially heinous? PUT THE PITCHFORKS DOWN.

“but- but- they pranked his sister first!!” yes, The Prank ™️ was wrong. but who told hannah to go and try and hook up with mike anyway? whole situation could’ve been avoided had she, like, been a good person and told emily mike was “hitting on her”.

the whole point of the game is that everyone sucks and that every choice has irreparable consequences. i don’t know. i just think it’s strange that yall will tear certain characters to shreds for the silliest reasons but turn around and curse the bloodline of anyone who dares speak negatively about josh.

every time someone hates on ashley or abi for being “too whiny” an angel loses its wings. newflash: anxious people WILL become more anxious when faced with supernatural threats!! 😨😨 crazy i know. plus, if all the characters acted the same yall would be complaining that everyone is too bland. our scream queens add to the game, let’s cherish them 🙂‍↕️

personally a mix of the gazillion books and the examiner 🙂‍↕️

Fanfiction is great because you can see so clearly how people learn to write.

Some people, it's clear, learned almost entirely through absorbing the world around them. Grammar and punctuation will be all over the place, spellings are approximate, but the voice of the narration will come through so clearly. You can hear the dialect of the people around them as of they're telling the story. It's not a written story, it's a transcription of how they talk in their day to day life.

Some people learned through reading a gazillion books as a kid. Grammer and spelling will be rock solid, formatting occasionally based on the single tab of physical books rather than the double tab of online scrolling, but dialogue is often stilted and overly formal. You might notice a lack of contractions and very rigid rules they made for consistency that actually have a lot more flexibility than they think. They tend to have a fantastic grasp of sentence flow, though.

And other people formally learned how to write. This could be anywhere from taking school classes seriously because they enjoyed writing stories as a kid to literal certifications and jobs in the field. Grammer is flawless. Punctuation is triple checked. Foreign words are in italics. Characters have distinct voices. But their self indulgence is tempered by perfectionism. They know precisely what they want from a fic. Authors notes often feature mutterings about their happiness with the chapter. Kaomojis often appear! They seek a style to their writing, and it makes for some wonderfully clever plots! These are the ones most likely to get fun with formatting!

And some people.... Some people examined it all. They dissect dialogue, people watch, cross reference behaviours and compare characters to people irl. You can tell almost immediately who had formative experiences with Terry pratchett and/or ghibli, because it's these people. While others see writing as fun, expression, craft, they see it as art. Plain and simple. Sure, the grammar is occasionally sacrificed on the altar of creative freedom, and the occasional sentence might miss a full stop, but these people seem to self reflect on themselves as part of the art making process. On occasion, these people have the most masterful grasp of dialogue and invocation and hand sewn characterisations. Formatting is pretty standard because all the focus is on the actual words. These fics can be edited to the moon and back!

All of these can vary wildly in forethought and quality, and betas can often catch individual problems before they hit post, but just. Isn't it so cool? What's that one Oscar Wilde quote about every mask just being another fragment of yourself?
