Dehumanizing bigots is bad, not because I want to be nice to them, but because they are human beings and they serve as a reminder that anyone is capable of evil ideation and action. Violent bigots are not fundamentally different beings from you. They are human beings, who have developed a reactionary and destructive belief system due to their circumstances combined with their biases. In a different timeline, that could've been you. Anyone can be radicalized. Nobody is immune to propaganda, not even the person reading this.

if you read and enjoyed dr jekyll & mr hyde (or the glass scientists), frankenstein, dorian gray, etc—odds are you’ll enjoy a much lesser-known but just as good gothic novel called the private memoirs and confessions of a justified sinner.

you can look up a much better summary than i can provide, but it’s an amazing early exploration of religious extremism and the indoctrination of young people, the nature of free will, mental psychoses, and human identity. not to mention the author’s commentary on scotland’s national identity.

it utilizes the gothic doppelgänger trope and explores dual identities in a way that is completely different from jekyll & hyde or dorian gray. our irredeemable main character is a wet dying baby bird found in a mouldy cardboard box at the side of the road with delusions of grandeur and religious trauma. he makes victor frankenstein look downright self-aware in comparison. oh yeah and the devil is there too btw

As a rule of thumb, if one of your hobbies comes from hating other people, it’s probably not a good use of your time.

I’m thinking about homophobes or transphobes who spend hours at a time seething about queer people that they haven’t — and never will have — met. In a lot of cases, caricatures that may not even exist.

Like, of course your family doesn’t want to be around you. Your idea of relaxation is scrolling through a hashtag and indiscriminately tweeting “groomer”. It’s June! It’s dead brilliant weather! Start a garden! Paint! Make a baked salmon, I’ll even send you the recipe!

Oh, this minor on TikTok said they have BPD and they cosplay, and they also use some neopronouns. Are they faking their disorder? Is that girl dressing as a drag king tarnishing the reputation of Normal Gays, who have never asked for more than to be allowed silently in public? Are they? Is she? Is he? Have you been bathed in the radiance of the sun, immersing yourself in the natural world from which you and all other life derived? Have you enriched your life with jubilant conversation, with family and friends over a cheesecake you made that isn’t perfect, but you can all laugh about it, and everyone has cleaned their plate, not a slice is left? Have you caught a cool breeze blowing through your window, billowing the gossamer curtains, feeling a spark of joy flit about in your soul? Or are you reserving that space for bitterness for some stranger who has done all those things, and will never know you exist?

It’s easy to get caught up in hate; a lot easier than it is to chase joy. I’m guilty of this too. Fear is incredibly powerful. But it’s so fleeting and unfulfilling, and ultimately destructive, not just to others, but to yourself. The seeds and embers of love are in all of us, but it takes effort to tend to the blooms, to fan the flames. You are worth the effort it takes to find your own little happinesses in the world, your own summer flowers and bonfires.

I’m serious about that salmon recipe, by the way. It comes with a honeyed blackberry and arugula salad.

I almost always prefer vanilla! I like chocolate by itself, but when it comes to flavourings, I love the exotic taste of vanilla! 🥰
