❛ i've half a mind to leave them all behind and keep moving. ❜   /   @starfll .
Tumblr media
the statement doesn’t surprise her ; would never surprise her, not from dyanna, but it feels all the more appropriate to their present circumstances. it is the same sentiment expressed variously throughout the castle, muttered behind hands and conveyed in sharp, mistrustful gazes, the desire to be free of this ominous place. of course, curiosity and intrigue keep all but the most cautious lords and ladies comfortably benefiting from winterfell’s hospitality, but even with the arrests, the tension hardly dissipates.
she smirks, lets out a huff of laughter — no derision in it, just the faintest note of defeat. don’t we all ? “ and where would you go ? ” in her voice a strange, unnatural quality, an openness ; stripped of all cruelty, all mockery, she hardly sounds like herself. she leans forward, rests her chin in her hand, pensive but, at least for now, unburdened. “ the seas can’t be safe, and by the kingsroad it’ll be summer before you reach starfall. ”

° ✧ GAME OF THRONES PROMPTS. PART I.
possible triggers, read/reblog with caution.
SEASON ONE :
❛ Nine years! Why have I not seen you? ❜ ❛ Where the hell have you been? ❜ ❛ Would you please shut up! ❜ ❛ Take me to your crypt, I want to pay my respects. ❜ ❛ Surely, the dead can wait. ❜ ❛ Did I offend you? Sorry. ❜ ❛ What the hell do you know about being a bastard? ❜ ❛ I heard you the first time. ❜ ❛ It’s no mercy, letting a child linger in such pain. ❜ ❛ I just want to stand on top of the Wall and pissoff the edge of the world! ❜ ❛ Give me a good, clean death any day. ❜ ❛ What good will my sympathies do them? ❜ ❛ Your absence has already been noted. ❜ ❛ One word and I hit you again. ❜ ❛ I’ve half a mind to leave them all behind and keep moving. ❜ ❛ You’re too hard on yourself. You always have been. ❜ ❛ I swear, if I weren’t your king/queen, you’d have hit me already. ❜ ❛ Trust me, that’s not the worst thing. ❜ ❛ Tell me we’re not speaking of this. ❜ ❛ Oh, it’s unspeakable to you? ❜ ❛ Look at me and tell me what you see. ❜ ❛ You broke my nose, bastard! ❜ ❛ I wonder how long it’d take you to hit! ❜ ❛ They hate me because I'm better than they are! ❜ ❛ Glad to see you’re protecting the Throne. ❜ ❛ It must be strange for you, coming into this room. ❜ ❛ But you just stood there and watched. ❜ ❛ Is that what you tell yourself at night? ❜ ❛ How could you let this happen?! ❜ ❛ I received a slightly warmer welcome on my last visit. ❜ ❛ Do you remember anything about what happened? ❜ ❛ Why are you here? ❜ ❛ I have a gift for you. ❜ ❛ Will I really be able to ride? ❜ ❛ Is this some kind of trick? ❜ ❛ Piss on that! I wanna hit somebody! ❜ ❛ You do move quietly. ❜ ❛ You’re speaking of murdering a child. ❜ ❛ You will dishonor yourself forever if you do this. ❜ ❛ I felt something for you once, you know. ❜ ❛ Does that make you feel better, or worse? ❜ ❛ You wish to confess your crimes? ❜ ❛ My crimes and sins are beyond counting. ❜ ❛ I’m good at convincing others to do violence for me. ❜ ❛ What do you think you’re doing?! ❜ ❛ I have that right, same as you. ❜
SEASON TWO :
❛ We looked for you on the battlefield, but you were nowhere to be found! ❜ ❛ I…I’ve been here, ruling the kingdoms! ❜ ❛ I’m glad you’re not dead. ❜ ❛ Knowledge is power. ❜ ❛ Excuse the interruption. Carry on. ❜ ❛ It’s been a… remarkable journey! ❜ ❛ You brought this on yourself. ❜ ❛ I’ve done nothing. ❜ ❛ Do you understand we’re losing the war?! ❜ ❛ Disappeared? What, in a puff of smoke?! ❜ ❛ Must be hard for you- to be the disappointing child. ❜ ❛ Oh, I trust them with my life- just not with yours. ❜ ❛ Three victories don’t make you a conqueror. ❜ ❛ I won’t need a servant to do my beheading for me! ❜ ❛ I heard you suffered a terrible head wound.  ❜ ❛ I am very good at keepingsecrets for my good friends. ❜ ❛ Who threatened you? ❜ ❛ I understand the way this game is played. ❜ ❛ I’ll have you thrown into the sea! ❜ ❛ I am a pirate- I’m an excellent pirate! ❜ ❛ That’s a promise that always comes true. ❜ ❛ You don’t know how persuasive I am. ❜ ❛ You’re the mosthonest smuggler I ever met. ❜ ❛ You have no need to see this. ❜ ❛ I believe we know how to pour our own wine. ❜ ❛ Maybe I’ll hire this cook of yours. ❜ ❛ I don’t listen to filth. ❜ ❛ I appreciate your loyalty. ❜ ❛ I’ll not have my honour questioned by an imp! ❜ ❛ I just wouldn’t feel safe with you lurking about. ❜ ❛ I command you to arrest this cutthroat! ❜ ❛ Do you hear me?! ❜ ❛ I think there’s more to ruling than that. ❜ ❛ There’s no bigger joke in the world than that. ❜ ❛ What about all the dreams you had that didn't come true? ❜ ❛ Your time with the wolves has made you weak. ❜ ❛ You gave me away if you remember. ❜ ❛ You gave me away like I was some dog you didn’t want anymore. ❜ ❛ You won’t get away with this. ❜ ❛ I’ve decided I don’t like riddles. ❜ ❛ You want to know what side my family fights on? ❜ ❛ You gonna tell me where you’re from? ❜ ❛ You can’t talk to me like that! ❜ ❛ That’s twice I’ve warned you. ❜ ❛ I don’t want you in my tent oneminute more than necessary. ❜ ❛ It would be my pleasure. ❜
SEASON THREE :
❛ You’re wearing the wrong color. ❜ ❛ When I’m free, will I be free to go? ❜ ❛ I'll be free to kill you. ❜ ❛ From now on, you’d better kneel every time I fart. ❜ ❛ You’re telling me you saw… one of them.  ❜ ❛ Did I come to the right place? ❜ ❛ We’ll need to find you a new cloak. ❜ ❛ I need an army. ❜ ❛ It’s too beautiful of a day, to argue. ❜ ❛ I am wondering why you sent for me. ❜ ❛ Have you grown boredprotecting me? ❜ ❛ I’m sure you’ve filled your pockets. ❜ ❛ I don’t loan it out to friends as a favor. ❜ ❛ I don’t even know what I’m paying you now! ❜ ❛ Am I enjoying it? ❜ ❛ I heard how happy you were. ❜ ❛ I gave you real power and authority. ❜ ❛ You brought a whore into my bed. ❜ ❛ Why does everyone assume I want something? ❜ ❛ A little bloody gratitude would be a start. ❜ ❛ So tell me what you want. ❜ ❛ I want what is mine by right. ❜ ❛ The next whore I catch in your bed, I’ll hang. ❜ ❛ I’m not your enemy. ❜ ❛ I’ve never seen anything like it. ❜ ❛ Even the bravest men fear death. ❜ ❛ Tell the good master there is no need. ❜ ❛ Here, I’m done with you. ❜ ❛ How many do you have to sell? ❜ ❛ We don’t get to choose who we love. ❜ ❛ I only want to know what that means. ❜ ❛ Are you frightened, child? ❜ ❛ Tell us the truth. No harm will come to you. ❜ ❛ I have traitor’s blood. ❜ ❛ Please don’t make me say anymore. ❜ ❛ Please, don’t stop the wedding. ❜ ❛ That doesn’t mean they’re not worth helping. ❜ ❛ I have no doubtyou will prove equal to this challenge. ❜ ❛ This is the safest place in the city. ❜ ❛ Any advice for me, on my new position? ❜ ❛ How long will you be gone? ❜ ❛ You don’t have the strength. It would kill you. ❜ ❛ There is another way, a better way. ❜ ❛ The blood of my enemies, not the blood of innocents. ❜ ❛ What’re you doing, leading a mob of peasants? ❜ ❛ I should have killed you! ❜

Tumblr media
HIS  BOOTS  TAPPING  ON  the  ground  in  time  with  the  melody  he  hummed  under  his  breath  greatly  impeded  his  attempt  to  be  stealthy.  a  knife  in  one  hand,  apple  in  another,  the  sharpest  edge  piercing  the  skin  of  the  fruit  &  leaving  it  in  spiraling  curls  onto  the  ground.  baeryn  looked  up  for  a  moment,  before  flicking  his  wrist  &  slicing  pieces  of  the  apple  &  popping  them  into  his  mouth,  still  humming  snatches  of  a  song  with  his  head  bobbing  along.  “  if  you’ve  come  to  ask  more  questions,  i’ve  already  answered  all  the  i  know.  you’ll  simply  have  to  wait  until  i  am  finished  with  my  lunch. ”
Tumblr media
it is the soft humming that catches her attention first ; the contentment of the sound feels out of place in the morbid, suspicious atmosphere that pervades winterfell. but when jeyne recognizes the source, she finds herself no longer surprised — baeryn clegane always seemed to be in high spirits. “ i wasn’t going to interrogate you, ” she says, reproachful as she approaches. “ but fine. i won’t ask you about my father, or about your travels, or — gods forbid — if you are well. i didn’t really care anyway, ” she teases warmly, brushing her hair back over her shoulder in a haughty, dismissive gesture that is only half in jest. she cannot help but smile ; there are enough familiar faces in the northern capital, but so few friendly ones that she had forgotten how comforting they could be.

daemon couldn’t tell if she was making fun of him, he could never tell when women were making fun of him. he squinted as she spoke and tilted his head to the side, did he walk into mockery? rarely did he find women that mocked him but he supposed anything could be possible. he ran his fingers over his hair and hummed. “there is much that men don’t know. anything is possible.”
the velaryons did have their own beliefs, tales of the high seas came with many tales of ghost. the dead didn’t leave them when they died. he would swear to all that he could he hear the sound of his brother calling his name whenever they sailed through the waters where he was lost forever. “the sea goes on forever they say, some say there’s a world down there, a city all it’s own.”
Tumblr media
there is much that men don’t know, he says, and jeyne cannot help but smile a little at how right he is. even if there are no such things as ghosts or ice dragons, there is a whole secret world unseen, but very much alive beneath their noses. this surely isn’t what he means, though ; it is only a little blustering, a hedging of bets. two hundred years ago men made the mistake of claiming all dragons were dead, and today still, men are hesitant to disbelieve lest their hubris be corrected by the gods.
this does not surprise her, but she doesn’t expect what he says next, her curiosity piqued. “ oh ? ” a twitch in her forehead as brows knit in polite confusion. “ surely you don’t mean the watery halls of the drowned god ? ” she inquires, presumptive ; the velayrons are sailors and seafarers, but still decidedly southern. is what he says not edging close to blasphemy ?

Cassandra isn’t as familiar with the Northern Kingdom as she perhaps should be. Her father is an ambitious man, though, and no house, North or South, is entirely ruled out of the scope in which he intends to extend his reach, Cassandra knows that even The Vale has not been ruled out when it comes to prospects for his children, and the thought of that terrifies Cassandra. Sitting here with Jeyne, though, it doesn’t seem too bad.  At least there is enough gossip to sustain them throughout the evening, even if it is about people Cassandra only knows vaguely by name.
“How embarrassing for them,” there’s no sympathy in her voice. Rather, it filled her with a giddy sort of glee. A better person wouldn’t take so much pleasure in the misfortune of another, but Cassandra had never made any claims to be a good person. “Perhaps,” she began, her tone low and conspiratal. “It was planned by the parents all along. If they were short on coin, it does make a certain sort of sense that they would encourage such a match, and the scandal was actually a way of saving face. It may be less of a shame for them, and wearing the dress is a congratulations for a successful scheme.” Perhaps it was the wine, but her imagination was running away with her, her mirth palpable the more she spoke.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
jeyne scans the room, the crowd ; her gaze is that both of prey and of predator, seeking something and at the same time all too aware of being sought. when she catches another’s eye, her gaze flashes back to cassandra — almost startled or shy. but the lift in her chin, the straightening of her posture, betrays her awareness of being watched. from a distance they must look exactly as intended: harmless, frivolous, bright little creatures, little birds on a bough, chirping back and forth. it is only upon closer inspection that the truth becomes evident, and from her vantage point jeyne delights in the cruel cut of cassandra’s gaze, the cold cadence of her laughter.
“ hmm. ” lips pressed, she hums a little in vague assent, amusement rolling steadily across her face like a ship on the tides as she considers the idea, appearing for a moment more contemplative than mocking. “ perhaps you’re right, ” she admits with a note of high, girlish laughter, her smile stretching. “ lord brax, of course, would never allow it, the proud old fool. ” the irony of mocking his pride, while her family is known for its pride and ambition, is not entirely lost on jeyne. “ the mines at hornvale haven’t been productive in generations, and his favor wanes, but he still thinks himself the most important lord in the west, after lord brannon. he would sooner bankrupt his house than bring dishonor, and is well on his way to doing so, if reports are to be believed. his wife, though, is a spicer by birth. even now they’re still more merchants than lords, my father says. she’d have the good, mercantile sense to make that sort of arrangement, i think. ”

She says it like it is some dirty word unfit for a lady of her stature. And she was right. It was stooping low, and for what? The puzzled look remained fixed on his features, eyes not meaning to bore into her but doing so nevertheless. In Lucas’ eyes, they were alone, the gods looking as witnesses. If there were others in their presence, none of them were important. All that mattered was Jeyne.
“You are twisting my words, my dear Jeyne,” was his reply, not nearly as callous as hers. “I could not stand alone in fear, I had feared for you. Even you could say that is a different feeling, hmm?” They were in a place where they were welcomed and yet could be cut down just as easily. Was his worry not justified? “If I had not gone looking for you, would I not be doing my duty as your husband?”
Tumblr media
“ your duty as my husband ? don’t make me laugh. ” and truly, that is what it is above all else: laughable. if it were not so incessantly aggravating, she might think it comical — certainly, they were now the sort of lord and lady she would have laughed at in her younger years, pushing each other into petty rages and foolishness, and hardly fooling anyone. neither one of them has done their duty by the other, not in years. perhaps you might instead do the duty of a wife, and hold your tongue, she thinks, equal parts venom and shame, but in this moment he seems so earnest he might actually obey her.
she takes another few steps, past him now, set to retrace the path back to their stifling chambers. “ do you feel honorable, now ? ” she asks, casually, as if asking after his health, gracing him with only the slightest flick of a gaze out of the corner of her eye. “ will you sleep easier tonight, knowing you saved me from some horrible death ? ”  she wonders, a little vindictively, how poorly he’d sleep if he knew what she knew.

There are times when Cassandra quite enjoys being the social butterfly, all charming smiles and graceful countenance. She doesn’t take to that role quite as well as her elder sisters, and she attributes that to there being too much Baratheon in her. She has the fighting spirit of a Stormlander, and an inability to keep her thoughts separate from her facial expression. Similarly, Jeyne is everything Cassandra thought a Lannister would be, though perhaps more the Lannisters of old than what they are now, before they lost the Westerlands.
But it is that precise attitude that brings Cassandra to her side tonight, over everyone else in the room, and she is pleased to note that her catty remark has the desired effect. The laughter is clipped, but the sentiment returned in kind by the others words, and Cassandra’s eyes begin to dance in mirth. “No!” She exclaims, something akin to a cackle escaping from her, and she claps a hand to her mouth to stifle her giggles. “I think I would simply die if my mother even thought of wearing my dresses. Perhaps they’re having financial woes,” she muses, looking to Jeyne for confirmation. “Although if I ran off with a landed knight, my mother probably would have died of embarrassment long before she could go through my things. Can you even imagine?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it isn’t altogether conventional, this fraternizing with their southern neighbors ; not for the west especially, the kingdom most put upon to display its loyalty. the vale and the riverlands have been of the north for as long as anyone alive can remember, before the war for the independence, even. but despite where the borders may be drawn, the westerlands retain the strongest ties to the southern kingdoms. northern austerity does not reach this far south, and lannisport resembles king’s landing or oldtown far more than gulltown or white harbor. and that incessant northern honor, against which jeyne strains — that is most different, and the worst of all. in this light, the lady cassandra is an outsized blessing, with her cruel mouth and laughing eyes ; a bullheaded baratheon, perhaps, but fiery, entirely lacking the northern cold.
“ oh, they must be, then, ” jeyne confirms. “ not that they were ever destined to be wealthy. the lord of hornvale is a degenerate gambler, and they’ve only daughters. more girls than they have dowries. perhaps that’s why alannys ran off, to spare their coin in expense of their reputation, ” she speculates, unable to keep the smug delight from her features. “ still, how tasteless. i’d sooner go naked through the streets than wear something so reminiscent of my house’s shame. ” she wrinkles her nose at that, raising a glass of sweet, chilled arbor gold to her lips.

Daemon almost said that he didn’t think of her at all but he could hear the nagging voice in his head that told him to keep his mouth shut. He dragged his fingers over his hair. He shook his head, laughing a bit, he heard crazier things from women on his ship but Ladies always kept their words in their cups or in sewing circles.
“A fool believes there’s nothing.” He heard the whispers on the sea, the whispers beyond wind whistling over water. He would swear he saw the hand of the Merling King pulling his brother into the murky deep. Daemon didn’t share those thoughts with everyone, some things were secrets and he preferred to keep his secrets to himself. He especially wouldn’t share secrets with a stranger or with someone who he couldn’t if they were mocking him or not.
Tumblr media
curiosity quirks her brow, sharp face tilting slightly more towards him, inquisitive. it’s become something of a pastime, playing at frivolity, testing where the boundaries of someone’s beliefs lie. most men believe only a fool fears that which he cannot apprehend. it’s what her father would say, when faced with her mother’s omens and anxieties. “ oh ? ” a hint of disbelief in her tone at his unexpected response. “ not that i don’t wholeheartedly agree, of course, ” she hurries to add, lest he feel himself questioned, or mocked ; the lord of the tides strikes her as a proud man, not the sort to enjoy being laughed at.
then again, seafarers were always of a more superstitious sort. perhaps he heard tales of sea monsters as a child, as jeyne had been told of lann the clever ; and who could fault him for believing them ? “ but what else is there, then ? according to the velaryons. a house as old as that, my lord must have countless ancient tales. ”

AN INQUEST  —  REQUIRED QUESTIONS .
Tumblr media
WHAT IS YOUR FULL TITLE / OCCUPATION ?
“ lady jeyne whent, lady of harrenhal and the god’s eye, formerly of house lannister of lannisport. ”
WHAT DO YOUR FRIENDS / LOVED ONES CALL YOU ?
a moment of silence, cold as a wintry draft. “ just jeyne. ”
WHERE WERE YOU BORN ?
“ the lord’s chambers of the keep at lannisport. ”
DO YOU HAVE SIBLINGS ?
“ not anymore. irwyn and davon died fighting the ironborn. i suppose i may soon have a new half-sibling if my father gets his way. ”
DO YOU HAVE CHILDREN ? DO YOU WANT THEM ?
“ no, unfortunately i’ve not been blessed with children, but i do hope i can give my husband an heir soon. ”
DO YOU HAVE A POSITIVE RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR FAMILY ?
“ yes, ” she lies easily, “ what little there is left of it, anyway. we are not as close as we were before i was wed. my father is a busy man, with important duties, but i have found a new home and family at harrenhal. ”
DO YOU HAVE ANY FAMILY TRADITIONS / MEMORIES THAT YOU VALUE ?
she thinks first of her mother, her penchant for witches and soothsayers. thinks of being eight years old again, draped in shawls, crowded ‘round candles and listening to fortunes being told. holds the memory in her heart like a river stone, smooth and sun-warmed, and chooses something else. “ my father loved to host guests — still does, i presume — from all over the known world. i’m grateful to have learned so much, as of course i will never see such places myself. ”
HOW DO YOU TYPICALLY SPEND A DAY ?
“ attending to my duties as lady of harrenhal. ” it’s hard not to smile at that ; hopefully it looks contented, not amused. “ which, truthfully, is an impossible task — you know that as well as i. it is half a ruin, there’s always something in disrepair, every fortnight there’s some uproar about ghosts, it’s — ... not what you asked. forgive me. ”
ARE YOU RELIGIOUS ?
“ yes, i follow the faith of the seven. but i have all due reverence for the old gods of the north, of course. ”
WHAT IS YOUR GREATEST STRENGTH ?
her brows furrows, lips pressed slightly in an inquisitive expression, as she tries to think of something appropriately feminine, appropriately deferent. “ patience, i suppose. ”
YOUR GREATEST WEAKNESS ?
this one takes no time at all. “ pride, ” she answers openly, trying not to look too proud. i am a lion, after all. best not remind them of that.
DESCRIBE A HIDDEN TALENT / LITTLE KNOWN SKILL YOU BELIEVE YOU POSESS.
“ i don’t know how hidden it is, but i’m quite skilled at cyvasse. ”
DO YOU FALL IN LOVE EASILY ?
“ no, i don’t think so. ”
DO YOU HAVE SOMEONE YOU WOULD DIE FOR ? WHO?
“ yes, of course. ” how many more lies will she tell ? “ should we not all be prepared to die for those whom we owe our fealty ? if lords and smallfolk alike can be called to war for their king, then i think i should be prepared to do the same. not that it is likely to come to that, for i hardly imagine how it could ever be necessary. ”
DESCRIBE YOUR LIFE FIVE YEARS FROM NOW.
“ quite the same as it is now. perhaps with a son, gods willing. ” she fakes a small smile, as if the thought alone cheers her.
DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF TO BE A SECRETIVE PERSON ?
“ oh, no, not really. of course, a lady must have some secrets she keeps to herself. ”
IS THERE A SECRET RELATED TO YOU THAT YOU HIDE FROM MOST PEOPLE ?
it’s harder now to feign nonchalance. “ no, not unless you mean that thing with the miller’s daughter when i was a girl. but i don’t think that’s much of a secret anymore. ”
DO YOU PUT YOURSELF BEFORE OTHERS , OR OTHERS BEFORE YOURSELF ?
“ i suppose that depends on the others. ”
DO YOU LIKE YOURSELF ?
she shrugs, as if she’s never even really thought about it. “ yes ? ” no, but who would ?
DO YOU BELIEVE THAT YOU ARE A GOOD PERSON ?
no, of course not. “ oh, i hope so. but it’s foolish to believe it too completely. ”
ARE YOU A VENGEFUL PERSON ?
“ i don’t think so, no. here i am, breaking bread with iron islanders, after all. ”
   —  EVENT / PLOT DROP RELATED QUESTIONS .
WHY  DID  YOU  ACCEPT  THE  INVITATION  TO  THE  CORONATION ?
“ well, we were invited by the king, were we not ? ”
WHAT ARE YOUR IMPRESSIONS OF THE NORTHERN  RULERS ? THEIR  HOME ?
“ my father always said the starks were strong, steady kings, who ruled with honor above all else. ” an abundance of honor, without a wit between them, was how he had put it. “ he said no other house could hold the kingdom together. i see the truth of that very plainly. and winterfell is beautiful. the weather has been a blessing. ”
WERE YOU PARTAKING IN THE FESTIVITIES AS AN INVITED GUEST , OR SOMEONE IN SERVICE TO AN INVITED GUEST ?
“ like i said, i was invited. i suppose you might say we are also here in the service of lord tully. ”
DID YOU ATTEND BOTH THE CORONATION & THE FEAST ?
“ yes. ”
IF SO , CAN YOU ACCOUNT FOR YOUR WHEREABOUTS PRIOR &  DURING  THE  ATTEMPTED  POISONING  OF  QUEEN  FREYJA  &  KING  EDRIK ? CAN ANYONE VERIFY THIS ACCOUNT ?
“ how far prior ? i was at the feast, with my husband. before that i was dressing — it’s quite an ordeal, you know, it’s not as easy as lacing breeches and donning a doublet. my husband left before i did, but my maid will assure you i was with her. ”
DID YOU SEE , HEAR , OR OVERHEAR ANYTHING SUSPICIOUS THAT MIGHT BE USEFUL IN THE INVESTIGATION ?
“ no, i’m sorry. i was quite caught up in the festivities — and then in the panic. i wish i had. ”
WHAT MOTIVE MIGHT SOMEONE HAVE FOR SETTING  THE  MAESTERS  TOWER  ABLAZE ?
“ oh, i couldn’t possibly know, isn’t that a question for the lord commander ? it does seem concerning, though, that the rookery has been burned too. i’m sure many people will want to send word home. ” she says almost cautiously, as though afraid to say something foolish. “ but i’m sure you thought of that already. ”
DO YOU BELIEVE THESE ATTACKS WERE / WILL BE AN ISOLATED INCIDENT ? EXPLAIN.
“ no — i mean to say, they already are not, right ? the poisoning at the feast, the burning of the tower.. and the death of king brandon. ”
WHO  DO  YOU  BELIEVE  TO  BE  RESPONSIBLE  FOR  THE  LATE  KING  STARK’S  MURDER ?
“ i wouldn’t dare speculate on that. i grieve for king brandon as the whole kingdom does. ” is that too much ? “ it seems disrespectful, as i know nothing. ”
IF YOU WERE ASKED TO LAY BLAME UPON ONE OF THE HOUSES, WHO WOULD YOU HOLD RESPONSIBLE FOR SUCH A HEINOUS ACTs ?
“ i really wouldn’t know. ” she makes a show of hesitating. “ i do not trust the greyjoys, but i would not question his grace’s decision to invite them. ”
IS  THERE  ANY  OTHER  INFORMATION  OF  NOTE  TO  SHARE  WITH  THE  INQUISITOR ?
“ no, i don’t think so. but if there is any way i or my husband may be of assistance we would be honored to help. ”

There’d been other footfalls around him, but for the most part, Quentin had managed to find himself alone. It was a terrible thing, but after the events that had occurred that night, it felt the safest option. When he was alone and afraid, he spiraled into all the wrong courses of action. He couldn’t be alone. Not now. Not when he was as confused as everyone else, if not more. The flag they had placed was Targaryen, but he knew that wasn’t right. Would Caeryn have been in on that plan? Would he tell him anything of substance?
He hadn’t noticed the other person walking down the hall, slinked in shadows. He’d been fiddling with a ring, and it had clinked onto the ground. The sound pierced his ears, and he was about to fold in on himself when he heard someone in front of him shriek. He quickly picked up the trinket and slid to the shadows.
Being criticized when one was doing the same exact thing never held well for the young lord. “At least it wasn’t a dagger I dropped.” Perhaps he should start carrying one around. Just in case. “If you believe I was purposefully sneaking up on you, you’d be sorely mistaken. Quite the cover you had - until you spoke!”

in the split second that she first notices him, her immediate, instinctual thought is, oh, he’s no threat. then, as recognition dawns on her, a flush of color rises in her cheeks ; embarrassment, but also an anger at being embarrassed. at least in the dark he might not notice. but as quickly as it had broken, her composure repairs itself. she is in the presence of a lord, after all, and a tyrell at that, and now is not the time to cultivate animosity or distrust.
the tension in her shoulders releases, and she shakes her head, expression apologetic. “ no — of course not ! i beg your forgiveness. ” her gaze dips momentarily to the floor, another gesture meant to sell the ruse. “ i wasn’t expecting anyone else to be out here. and recent murder does generally make me more fretful. ” despite herself, there is a bit of bite in that, poorly masked by a small, reluctant smile.

Her accusation cuts deep - another bleeding cut added to the countless lashes she’s committed over the years. While, yes, he had drank, he had known his limit for years. This cut quiets him, pulling him into the depths of his mind. There was one thing he was confident in: he didn’t win. Jeyne had sunk in disbelief, but she might as well have tossed him into the freezing God’s Eye herself. Was what he said embarrassing? Stupid? Outright cruel? It forced him to step back, away from her. This odd melancholy wasn’t like her - he wanted to reach out and comfort her, but he was the source of her pain!
What he should have done was leave. What he did, instead, was speak like the imbecile he was. “You never have to return the feeling.” For he was in love with her the way she was, even if that meant it was never reciprocated. “You’re outright insufferable, but you’re Jeyne.” He said that as if that was enough reasoning behind why he felt this way. In all honesty, he didn’t know.
Tumblr media
“ oh, i don’t ? ” she scoffs, a noxious mixture of derision and vigilance spilling from her lips, as though with enough venom, enough distance, she can repair the barricade that has stood so long between them. a wall as thick and impenetrable as those at harrenhal, one they had built together, equal parts brick and blood and curses ; yet it melts away in a single white-hot instance, lucas’s confession burning bright as balerion’s dragonfire. ( and, like harrenhal, jeyne cannot repair it with sheer willpower and spite. ) “ how gracious of you, ” my lord, she thinks but does not add. the two little words like needles, almost innocuous, but deadly as a bravo’s blade ; she has seen well enough how they cut him.
a brow arches as he calls her insufferable, an insult leveled with a strange tenderness ; it takes effort to ignore the even stranger ways that makes her feel. “ and yet by your own admission you would willingly suffer me. ” it is not a question but an observation. no more the agitated, accusatory questions ( is that what you think ? are you truly so foolish ? ) but a quieter, deliberate coldness. an inquisitive gaze, as if she’s trying to solve the unsolvable puzzle of his motivations ; as if he’s a stranger she’s yet to fully apprehend. “ — people have been called mad for less. ”

Setting : The year 465, Lannisport
Usually, visiting the homes of other lords and ladies of Westeros was utterly boring. Cassandra could usually find a way to weasel out of things. But now Katherynne’s own marital prospects had been settled, while Cassandra’s were still up in the air, it was getting harder to find an excuse not to accompany her father. Being trotted out all across the continent wasn’t Cassandra’s idea of fun, but when it came to Lannisport, she didn’t mind so much.
She wouldn’t call Jeyne Lannister a friend - but then, Cassandra would call very few people a friend in truth. Still, she was less irritating than most people Cassandra knew, and could even be quite entertaining at times. That was enough to make the trip worth it, she supposed though Cassandra much rather would be back in the Stormlands.
“Have you seen what Lady Brax is wearing?” she turned to the other, the smirk on her face revealing everything she thought about Lady Brax and her choice of attire. “It’s at least twenty years too young for her, and it’s much too big. She looks ridiculous.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
for all the resentment it so often stirs in her, there is something to be said for growing up in the shadow of casterly rock ; it is what lends the city of lannisport both it’s wealth and prestige. it is the lefford, not the lannister name, that justifies the presence of the lord paramount of the stormlands and his household. not that anyone would imagine merely by looking at her that jeyne holds such thoughts. no, she walks around, pointed chin raised, as though she is the sovereign king of her own little hill. she is all grace and generous hospitality, as she’s been taught, but the haughtiness in her brow, in the way she carries herself, is unmistakable.
jeyne’s disposition finds a mirror — if somewhat distorted — in the lady cassandra, who eyes the proceedings with something like annoyance or distaste. nothing like her sister, is she ? jeyne lets out a small, close-lipped note of laughter, derisive, at cassandra’s observation, gaze cutting across to lady brax. “ gods, you’re right, it’s ghastly ! ” she agrees, with mock horror, eyes narrowing to more carefully inspect the dress from their distance. “ oh, and worse, if i’m not mistaken, it’s the self-same dress her daughter — alannys, the one who ran off with ser ammett peckledon — wore to the tourney at ashemark, nearly two years ago now. ” nose wrinkles in a demonstrative gesture of distaste. “ you would think she might have better sense. or at least a better seamstress. ”

“That’s it.” Daemon smiled, there was a sort of pride that came with people know of him and his family, knowing of their house. Men all over the realm seemed to fear the house. No one wanted to stay there and that amused him, castles weren’t scary. Horror tales told by milk maids and old women.
“Now that’s something i’ve always wanted to see.” Part of him wondered if there would be something that could connect with him in such a place. Even now, when there was a time for feasting and sailing the of tales Addam Velaryon would come up. Did the Green men have knowledge of things that all Velaryon men and women needed to know? One would think it would be part of the journey of gaining sea legs but mayhaps it was only a fun story. Daemon smiled as she laughed, “I suppose that some men can’t handle something they can’t stab. Have you seen these ghost?”
Tumblr media
“ i do hope you won’t think less of me if i admit, it is riotously amusing, ” she says lightly, a carefully curated balance of mirth and mischief. “ truly, very little compares to watching some gallant knight or old, proud lord, trying to find a better excuse to leave than i think i saw the ghost of black harren and can no longer control my bowels. ” brown eyes widen ever so slightly as she realizes she’s being rather coarse, hand raised to her lips. “ forgive me, ” she says, a sheepish note of laughter sounding behind delicate fingers.
his next question amuses her too, twists her lips into an easy, anticipatory laugh. “ i assure you, my lord, if i told you of all the ghosts i’ve seen there you would declare me mad on the spot, or else a fool. ” nonchalant yet superficially earnest, jeyne balances on the knife’s edge between honesty and jest ; a balance that must be carefully kept, for it would take more than easy, frivolous laughter to conceal the whole truth of harrenhal’s hauntings.
