Expanding on green being kalosian, i like to think that his mom was the kalosian one while his dad is kantonian (bc you'll never convince me that prof oak isnt a stuck up japanese kantonian old man). He and daisy used to live with their parents in kalos and came to kanto to visit grandpa during school breaks and such. His dad probably was also a scientist or something and met his mom in kalos bc of idk research reasons, im dumb idk what science people do, they probably do science because theyre science people, maybe they studied fossils bc i like the idea they left the kids with the grandparents to go to excavation sites and such (again idk how the whole fossil revival would work and idk if they would need scientists on site but just roll with me) and would be a nice way to explain why theyre not much in their kids lives be it having them have an accident and die or them being absent bc of work (i prefer the dead parents route, rest in pizza unnamed parents of pokemon rival green oak). Maybe it happened when green was still young (5yr old ish) so it would slot in nicely with being childhood friends with red and being, yk, kalosian.

After his parents death prof oak took it badly bc his son is dead so decided to neglect his grandkids since they reminded him of his son (and for extra angst he sort of resents green bc green looks like his mom and i hc that greens mom was the more adventurous one of the couple, like how typically people imagine french girls be, heh) and dotes on red bc after his late son moved to kalos he had major empty nest syndrome and red reminded professor oak of greens dad (i hc greens dad as a the gentle giant stereotype) so in someways red had always been professor oaks grandson since he was always there compared to green that only came during school breaks.

Also daisy probably has major eldest daughter syndrome after her parents death and desperately wants a happy family and poor girl keeps making excuses for professor oaks neglect (to be fair the man probably drowns in work to cope with grief i headcanon but still not an excuse to be an absent caretaker).

Green probably craved parental attention and tried to do anything to get it from professor oak so he later developed a rivalry with red since professor oak likes red most of the 2 (also its pretty valid the whole same age same height rivalry, 10yr olds have stupid rivalries, i was competitive with my younger cousins bc of height too mainly bc i wasnt growing and they were lol) also bc hes gay bisexual and closeted. I do think he is a bit of a sore loser but not in a outburst way but in a passive aggressive way (look at mere here explaining things badly, its just that many fics have him like that which is fine, food is food if i dont like i should just cook it myself, and i love any reguri fic). After losing to red he went to find himself and went through the if i cant make you care about me ill just pretend i dont care about you phase with oak and red and f off, became a camp counselor gym leader (i stand firm that pokemon journeys are a weird mix between summer camps and olympics), went to study in kalos (which oak didn't approve bc of the empty nest syndrome again and also bc he doesnt want green to be a copy of his dad and leave the family for kalos) about the fairy type and discovered his bisexuality and evolved from toxic ish overcompetitive kid to depressed cigarette twink. Mended his relationship with oak bc oak realised that neglecting kids is bad and green realising that his worth isn't tied to parental approval and despite oaks neglect he did always get green what he wanted (professor oak gives me major vibes of rich dad that is never home so he always brings home trinkets and stuff he thinks his kids would like to make up for his absence) but the relationship is more cordial since some people are easier to love from a distance, specially supposed close family (i do hc the whole oak family to be sassy though so they do joke and banter between them). And went back to being camp counselor gym leader this time more permanently after uni graduation, helps oak out in some science stuff and maybe eventually takes over the lab like professor oak would hope his late son would do. Although i always thought green more as the traveling type (its his aviator jacket, i can only think of biplane pilots looking at it) so maybe he studies pokemon ecology or something and flies around a lot (hence why he was in the sevii island in hgss, although i hc that hgss happens before his uni days in kalos).

Green does give me major ADHD vibes tho.

Also i dont get why green suddenly is brunet (yes i know that in his gen 1 artwork he has brown hair so technically he was always brunet but come on ginger suits him better).

I stan pixiv red, as in black hair and red eyes, well i think of him more with dark eyes that stare into your soul, i do get why in the frlg they redesigned him to be more ordinary looking but i liked how he looked in the gen 1 promo material (mainly bc it felt like his rivalry with green was mutual). Also stan selective mute autistic red. Also also stan the autistic urge to duke it out with your friends bc autism be like that, sometimes you gotta rough house with the homies (can i even use homies if im not african american?) (i personally have always been more of biting people instead of fighting people tho although im supposedly neurotypical, just heard of neurospicy people playing rough with friends). And male friendships be kinda like bullying so imo red didnt go up to mt silver bc he hated green or something, hes just that unemployed friend that you dont hear for 6 months and suddenly theyve gone cave diving, got a jet skiing license, is banned from burger king in amsterdam and got 3 iguanas as new pets, anyways i think his rivalry with green was mutual and somewhat friendly even if green was a tad bit overzealous at times. He also sucks keeping in contact with people and is moving constantly so no one knows where he is (me im someone who sucks at keeping contact with people, never picks up calls and like message my mom every 3 months most often lol) major van life influencer/survival channel type of vibes. The whole being at mt silver for 2 years schtick? Nah our boy was just there in passing and we ran into him coincidentally. Also also also demisexual red ftw.

My ideas of why tf red was doing up mt freeze your tits: mewtwo (i hc he caught him, rehabilitated him then released him bc red is a softie uwu, red is a pokemon rights activist), he wandered there like your unemployed friend wanders his ahh in some forest in a thursday and comes back with a backpack full of edible mushrooms for Sunday's bbq, was helping with oak with some research (nevermelt ice maybe?). while i dont think that he ran away bc of his new found fame i can accept that he takes short breaks from civilization and tells no-one about it or he does tell people about it but in a very vague way and was in the mood for mountain vacay.

I can imagine the convo with his mom be like:

Red: mom im going to take a breather

Mom: ok be back for dinner

And he just disappears without further explanation. Reds mom is worried but also sort of used to his sons vagueness and cryptidness.

Green and red did sort of grow apart after the champion battle, with red going on his wandering ways and green settling down on his gym stuff (like when you move away from town so you do become distant with your old friends) but reconnected in the unova Pokémon world tournament (like in those kdramas about childhood friends meeting again in the workplace). They become friends again but there is a tension between them (green still hadnt gone through his kalosian evolution yet so hes still a bit of a jerk bc hes a teenager also bc hes closeted and closeted people are a bit of a jerk at times). After green comes back from kalos they get invited to alola for the battle tree, green realises that he had beef with red bc he was gay for him stuff i havent thought about much happens and they start dating in alola.

Red also realises he likes green, i just dont know how to work with red bc we got so little material of reds personality aside from dude that might be your hypothermal hallucinations for going up mt freeze your balls with just capris and a sweater jacket.

I do think that the reguri relationship dynamic after confessing is very old married couple coded, probably bc they've known eachother for years and they worked out all their angst long time ago, specially green. I do like the contrast between how chill red is often portrayed compared with green being more passionate. They give me wangxian vibes as in lan wangji and wei wuxian from grandmaster of demonic cultivation/魔道祖师 (mó dào zû shī), with red being lan wangji and green being wei wuxian (although green is less mischievous and more cocky and arrogant).

Random reguri and other pokemon hc that are bouncing around my mind like the dvd logo thing

Considering how green (ookido green, im using japanese names) doesnt have his starter in the gen 2 games and red has all starters, i too adopt the headcanon that green gave red his starter sometime after the champion battle but before red going the f off up the freeze your butt mountain (since green doesnt know that red ran off to mt silver, i like to think they had a talk sort of immediately after the champion battle and oak being a bad grandpa moment when things all cooled off). It was done in a very tsundere "its not like i like you or anything b-baka" way (something something "you won bc my pokemon were weak i dont want them here have it" or something idk how to write generic sore loser rival dialogue lines).

I like to think that pidgeot is green's honorary starter, maybe it's his 1st caught pokemon or maybe he and red befriended a pidgey as kids (you ever fed pigeons and accidentally domesticated them?) before their pokemon journey. Maybe he dreamed of being a plane pilot or something as a kid before wanting to become a pokemon champion.

Expanding my pokemon journeys are a pilgrimage/summer camp activity thing rather than pokemon champions being region political leaders and such (bc if your country is ran by a kid with a team of lvl 100 ratattas you gotta have problems lmao). The pokedex is to compile field data of the pokemon and to extend the research data pool (otherwise where does the pokedex get the info on the pokemon after you register it? lol) rather than "oh hey you discovered a new pokemon!" "... Dude we've seen butterfrees migrate every year wym new pokemon". I think the gym and league challenge and the championships are more of an olympics type of situation and a side job in gym leader cases (i like how pokemon violet and scarlet did that). They do call the champion to do stuff if its stuff that can be solved via pokemon battle or something the champion could do with their skill sets (think of it like "yeah my friend steve who is a pro wrestler also has a geology degree imma ask him what this cool rock is" type of situation, otherwise i think its stupid to call a random 11 yr old kid to diffuse a nuclear bomb or something lol).

I was reading this post over on the Ao3 subreddit this evening and I think it brings up a lot of good points about how fandom, as a community, has been shifting in its treatment towards fanfic writers.

Fanfic is more popular than ever, which means there are more works "competing" for the readers' attention, who take on a passive approach that treats fanworks not as a means to talk to people with similar interests, but as content, as products. [...] Gift cultures thrive not on monetary exchanges, but on the expectation that the gifts freely given will be returned in an unspecified future through emotional and relational means. This used to set fandom apart, but it's slowly being absorbed into the mainstream way capitalism operates. Where does that leave us?

And it's demotivating to see the responses authors get when expressing their grievances with this state of affairs, or how they feel underappreciated. Being called entitled, told to write for themselves, or to promote their work as if writing and posting isn't enough. I write for myself, I post for the community. There are things I want to say about the source material and characters, and I do through storytelling. And I'm grateful about each of the comments I got, no matter how short. It's just that it doesn't feel like there's a community out there when no one talks back. Writers aren't just expected to write, but to do it for the "right reasons", and to also be as pleasant about it as possible, lest they'll be criticized by more people than the amount that's offering them support.

I've seen posts going around on tumblr that have approached this topic as well--that fanworks (particularly fanfic) should be created from the perspective of a perfect vessel that can pour, pour, pour out and never needs to be poured into. You should do it for the "right reasons" and not complain because "no one owes you interaction". But what is fandom if not interaction?

Writing fanfic is one of the most time-consuming labors of love that makes up a fandom. (That's not to say other fanworks aren't labors, time-consuming, or made with love. We're talking about fanfic). Your 300k+ enemies to lovers slowburn porn-with-plot fic that has reshaped the entire way you approach a specific pairing or media has been made with time, effort, for free, with the intention to be shared with you.

And in the state of current fandom, it has been made with the expectation to receive nothing back. Is that fair? Maybe. Silent readers exist and a kudos on Ao3 is at least an acknowledgment that some people read and enjoyed. But does it hurt to leave a comment? Even a heart emoji or an "I loved this, thank you for sharing!" is enough to at least start a dialogue, a conversation, form a connection.

That's not even to mention the isolation of fandom interactions to private Discords; time after time I've heard from fanfic authors who found out that there have been discord servers or twitter groupchats where their fanfic has been discussed, loved, and lauded at length--but never once was the author told this! Ao3 has comments for a reason. Many authors link their tumblr profiles or emails in their bio for people to reach out to them.

It's just a sorry state to see it go.

it’s probably inevitable mission creep from the increasingly transactional nature of the internet and fandom-as-consumerism, which was always gonna happen after corps worked out how much bank there is to make from those weirdo fan people

I like to think blue (using japanese names although omg its all a mess) in the let's go games and leaf from frlg as different people but in a maybe as siblings in a similar way to lyra and kris

Like blue is the quirky and loud (going by her pokemon evolution animated short series characterization and how shes portrayed in the lets go games) sibling and leaf is the sweet and subdued one that will beat you while silent and stuff (similar to red). Maybe blue is younger than leaf for a couple of years and is super proud that her older sis beat the league and such (idk how we would sort red being champion so maybe she just beat the elite four, eeeeeh idk details i cant be bothered to think off rn ill think later) and decided to embark in a pokemon journey years later hence meeting the lets go games protags and later deciding to become a researcher. Leaf keeps travelling the world and meets up every so often with blue when she does field research maybe.

In regards of how i would connect leaf with red and green, yk how supposedly everyone goes on a pokemon journey? I like to think of that as a summer camp ish activity but sort of obligatory like school since in the pokemon world everything is so connected with, you know, pokemon. Maybe the whole completing the pokedex is to help researchers with field data while also making a fun activity for journeyers. So maybe leaf, red and green went to the same school in pallet town, was put in the same special class with red bc of either autism or muteness (feel free to choose, i like to think of leaf and red as quasi identical parallels), played together with the boys in recess but like the relationship intensity between the 3 wasnt as intense as between just red and green (since its stated in the 1st gen game manuals that green views red as a rival bc they were the same height and the same age, lmao the goof, well tbf thats a very 11 yr old line of thought) kinda like 3rd wheeling, heh, but she had blue anyways so its fine. During her journey she did encounter green at times but green just threw her generic jabs and treated her like any other trainer and green saved the meaner ones for red bc hes so gay and so in denial.

Dunno, just thoughts. I need to work out more on my characterization of leaf tho.
