Here's Norio, part of the SpacePunks gang. It always love how characters grow and evolve when you meet the right people that inspire you. Originally, Norio was just the sidekick of the main character, Bala, and as such, did not have much of a personality... he was just a scared little friend that was used as a bouncing board to Bala's comments. Then I met Rocky, a dear friend of mine from Orange County, CA... love his dry sense of humor and excellent on-time comments. Suddenly I had the genius idea to give this once blah character my friend's personality... this not only gave Norio a definite personality, it made the interactions between him in Bala more real and funnier. Lately I have not been able to draw or post any new cartoons in this page, and here is why: I've been hard at work inking the next chapter of SpacePunks. Some have asked to see a before and after and, well, here it is! To the left it's the thumbnail I draw in the first stage of my script/storytelling work. Lately I like to draw the thumbnails as tight as possible so I can then ink them without having to draw an 11x17 page. Yup. I have stopped drawing the big pages to save not only money, but also time. To the right it's the finished paged, inked in Adobe illustrator. This program now has features that allows you to "ink" in a way that is close enough to the traditional pen-and-ink manner... I love it. No more mess and no more dark fingers for days! I LOVE inking in Adobe Illustrator... Not only does it allow to "ink" in a way that feels closer to traditional inking, you can also "cheat" with the several functions that come in vector-based programs. Here is a sample: the left side, although based on the pencils to the left, has been altered in a way that, even it is still essentially the same drawing, it has been inked in a much quicker way than if done traditionally.
