[10:10 PM]  “I miss you.” Hazel says, breaking the silence. She was over the small talk and the greetings. She didn’t need to know about how your day went or if the weather sucked at campus. She craved something deeper. She hoped you would tell her more, she hoped that you would pour yourself out to her again like you used to. Hazel felt selfish. 

Her words linger in the air. You switch your phone from one ear to the other and start playing with your ring. Suddenly everything in your cramped dorm room seemed interesting. People told you that distance makes the heart grow fonder but you would beg to differ. The distance between you and your partner is leaving a wedge between your relationship. 

“You don’t have to say it back, I guess.” Hazel follows up, scared of your rejection. Maybe if she kept talking, she could distract you from the fact that you haven’t seen each other in almost half a year. Maybe she could keep your attention; keep you from looking at other people.. But deep down she knew that you two had grown apart. You were busy being someone and she was busy catching up with the classes she was failing in.

You take a deep breath. 

“I miss you too, Haze.” 

There is a truth in your words. You do miss her, but you also miss the relationship you had before both of you went to college; before you parted ways. The late nights, the sneaking out, the kisses in the dark. All of it gone. Never in your wildest dreams would you have thought to feel so disconnected from your lover but the harsh reality is that you were separate people now. The I love yous weren’t the same, it didn’t give you butterflies anymore and the warmth in your heart had gone cold. All that's left is a dent in your heart in the shape of the dreams you and Hazel had for each other.

And yet, none of you did anything about this emptiness; the lack of affection. Both of you were too scared to admit that the relationship had run its course. You were both selfish, both scared. No one was brave enough to cut the cord. And so every Friday night, you call (or she does) and you talk about the same things. The weather, your classes, your friends. Like a script in a play where you both recited the lines like clockwork.

There will come a day that someone tires from the set up, no longer pressing the name on the screen, no longer having the energy to call.  But tonight you picked up the phone and you greeted your lover.
